Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.

I picked up my copy from GS. Did they give out the coin? I completely forgot about the thing and they definitely didn't offer it.
I had my gf call and see if they gave her the same answer.

She talked to a different person (a guy) who said they had 30 preorders, but only got 25 copies in. He also said "I don't think we'll get anymore in this week."

So now I'm pissed at TRU and Nintendo, who are fucking up a great deal. I was going to use the card next week during the B2G1 sale, as well as stack it with the spend 75 to get a $10 GC, and this is fucking it all up.

Ugh. I know this is an incredibly whiny and self-centered rant, but this is the second time in the last few weeks that I've had to deal with unbelievable amounts of bullshit for not pre-ordering, when it has never happened before. If Nintendo can't honestly fucking figure out that every store ought to have 50+ copies, and stores can't figure out to get more than just pre-order numbers imply, then we have reached a serious wtf moment in gaming distributorship history.

It almost - almost - makes me want digital delivery to hurry the hell up.
I'm with you, Strell... I just got off the phone with three TRU's in the area... The first store I had originally called around 3, and was told it was not in yet, but that I should try calling back at 5, which is when they expected it. When I called back at 5, I was told they had sold out of their allotment.
The second store told me that they had only recieved 7 copies, and they weren't sure when they would be getting more.
The third and final store told me they hadn't recieved the game, and they were hoping it would show up either tonight, or tomorrow.

It's a Mario game, for fucks sake... The walls should have been covered with them. What happened? Did they blow their video game budget for the year on Halo 3? Very disappointing...

Wow trhis sucks... I thought TRU (a major partner with the Wii release mind you) would have had these flowing... More and more the Preorder or you wont get a copy comes true..... I mean even to the extent of Preorders not coming in....

I should have went to mine today and picked it up... now it will be Wed-Thursday and i will get jacked I am sure.

I'm about 25 stars in, and loving it. I have to take a break for a couple of days though because I have a test tomorrow and a paper due Thurs.

At least I was able to get it yesterday so I could play a bit before than.

got like 8 or 9 stars, i almost felt like strangling myself with the nunchuk wire while
ray surfing
though i realized it would prob break and i would just have to buy a new one.
On to the 4th dome, 27 stars so far. Keeps getting better.
I assume you're doing bare minimum and will be going back to do the rest later. I have nearly the same amount of stars but haven't opened up the third dome yet.

I have to say it's really quite nice how each level is somewhat different to the point where you aren't running the exact same level all the time. It really keeps the content fresh this way. Also glad I don't see anything indicating we'll need 100 coins per galaxy like we did in Super Mario 64. Those stars were such a pain to get in some levels. Challenges are quite nice too.

Don't take this rudely, but where the hell do you guys live? I am on the Illinois side of St. Louis and the Toys R Us there had about 60 bajillion copies of the game. Granted none were put out. They were all behind the register and in a shopping cart right next to the register. Maybe they were al pre-ordered.

As for the game, up until now I thought the pinnacle of gaming was RE 4 Cube/Wii version. This BLOWS it out of the water. RE4 was the first time since I was a kid I stayed up until 2 in the morning playing a video game. Galaxy? I stayed up until 2, did a little work in the morning, played all afternoon, have played all night and will be staying up until 3 in the morning with a short work break tomorrow.

Took the afternoon off today to play. Now have 30 stars. I have 5 domes opened up and several galaxies that I haven't even touched. Somewhere I went from having 2 or 3 choices for levels ot like 30.

I love this game. It's no doubt the best 3D platformer ever made. Will it in the end surpass the juggernaut that is Mario 3 for me? It's trying. Oh, boy, is it trying.

No question in my mind it is already the best Mario game ever. The small planet worlds where you can run around blow my mind. I love it.

It IS hard to judge though as I was a kid when Mario 3 came out. I find it more impressive that I am an adult now and still couldn't stand the wait for this one. It was like I was 10 waiting for Christmas again.

Edit: I love the music also.

I'm hearing all the B&M retailers in my area are selling out of their stock very rapidly. More shipments to come next week... this title will get steady sales through Christmas.

I've heard some of the music, and it's as good as some of you all are saying. Sounds like this one's a keeper in all categories.
Um. I responded in the very next post. All Nintendo games have trilingual boxes and manuals.
Yeah. Funny stuff.

As for the game: I picked it up at TRU + Sonic and the Secret Rings using the $10gc w/ $75 purchase coupon for a total of $85.58 w/ $35gc. I'm not sure whether I'll keep Sonic, but that's a different thread.

I think what I'm trying to say is: a game this spectacular (I've only 3 stars, but this much is pretty clear) deserved such a spectacular deal. It's balls for the likes of Strell.

I'm absolutely terrible at all the bonus/hidden galaxies I've tried, so I've given up on those unless I need to get some more stars later.

Looks like daroga and I will be in a race to get to 60 since I'm also on my 30th star. May try to finish up the current dome tonight if I feel like staying up a bit. That would take me to 34 stars, I think.

Some of these levels I love, some I hate, but the quality is stellar. I just suck at environmental levels - water, ice, lava, argh!

As far as best Mario ever.. it's close. I still have a long way to go as far as precision platforming. Much easier to pinpoint 2D landings than 3D, so that will impact my decision somewhat. But unless the level design tails off dramatically in the last half of the game... brilliant.

It seems like TRU distribution really screwed the pooch. I know my store had somewhere in the vicinity of 100 copies, my friend's had 80 (suburban stores in Ohio and Kansas City respectively) while there's talk of many stores getting < 20.

I beat the game last week (go Best Buy!) and having played Bioshock, Halo 3, Orange Box, I think I can safely say:

Game of the Year

I pre-ordered it a couple of months back when they started pre-orders at Gamestop, so I had to pick up another copy, which I preceded to return to Best Buy to get my money back there. Complicated story. But, I got my coin, which is awesome. Seriously, you should check out EVERYTHING in this game. It is one you will want to beat at 100%

botticus, you'll probably beat me. I'm stuck at work all night and I'm probably going to have to work tomorrow afternoon (can I take two afternoons off to play a game? Technically yes, but I shouldn't. ;) )

Did anyone in Austin get it at TRU? The guy at TRU told me that Austin missed out on shipments. I'm trying to figure out if he's full of shit or not.

Probably is full of shit. Best bet is to go there and find out for yourself. I was in Target early this morning, someone called in, asked for a game, lady came over, looked DEAD ON at Super Mario Galaxy, went back to the phone and said no.

So, the lady was very spiteful, blind, or retarded. I'm not sure which.

Haha. Yeah. Thanks. I was looking for a quote with my post in it.

Uhh. IDK if you've checked out the TRU thread dedicated to the Mario Galaxy + $25 GC deal but uh yeah, a ton of TRUs didn't get their shipments.

I ended up getting 2 Mario Galaxies today. One I bought at the local EBgames with their crappy "1 per customer" bullcrap. Then I drove to Toys'arent'us and bought Galaxy that came with the $25 Gift Card. I plan on going back to TRU in a couple of days to use the gift card on Umbrella :p

So, I have around 65 stars now and I have access to the end of the game, but I am holding off until I beat all the galaxies. Thus far I must say that this is now one of my favorite games of all time. It really is Mario 3 in 3-D, Space, on drugs etc...

On a side note I just started the open field room, and man does every level sound overtly evil. Dreadnaught Galaxy being the standout title. I mean I was half way expecting listed with those titles "Mario is Going To Die Galaxy."

Just started. I only have two stars- one from the beginning and the first one from Good Egg. I like the game thus far, but I'm not sure I understand the point of the question mark boxes in the galaxy selection area, or why there's a mere 3 stars per galaxy.

Beautiful game. This is the second game to really make me love my Wii (the fist being Super Paper Mario).

Finally played it. It's awesome. I had to stop after the second star though. I'm sick as hell today, so the games awesomeness overloaded my senses and gave me even more of a headache.

I'll definitely be playing more tomorrow though.

Think we should wait to register it?

The past 3 Nintendo games I've registered I've gotten some sort of free thing lol
- Quill Stylus for Phantom Hourglass
- Stylus set for Brain Age 2
- Wii keychain for Big Brain Academy

Wouldn't want to miss out on another freebie :bouncy:
No more Godfather love, Rocko?
Oh, I loved that game too. A lot. One of the few games I tried to fully complete. But, to be fair, it wasn't a Wii exclusive, so I guess I didn't think of it as a great Wii game, but a great game in general, y'know?
Think we should wait to register it?

...What? If there's an offer from MyNintendo (which is doubtful since they gave preorder coins) it doesn't matter when you register it, before or after the promo starts.

My dilemma was that I preordered at gamestop so couldnt get the TRU deal, so I just called three stores and 2 were sold out, the third i drove 25 miles out of my way to the nearest TRU to go get it. It was in Johnstown, PA (very small town) and they had like 20 more copies! Ill swap the preorder to Smash bros brawl.
I just completed the first galaxy. Wifey played a bit and really had fun trying
to catch the rabbits.
The camera/controls are kind of wacky when you're running upside down but its still very intuitive. It seems there is a slight learning curve, at least for getting used to when to press down on the control stick when your trying to go up when upside down. Its hard to even explain. Craziness. Still it looks absolutely fabulous.

HEADS UP CAGERS: Lets make it a point to be extra careful with spoilers since a lot of people are going to be playing this within the next week and don't want to miss out on surprises, myself included!

Tried to get the game from TRU to get the gift card. I picked the game up from Wally World cause I really wanted to play yesterday. Saw TheKaneRobot at TRU and he came over to play SMG. It was cool. He scared my dogs.

Yeah, I'm having trouble right now not shooting my damn star bits into space. I wish you could make it so two buttons need to be pressed to do that. I keep doing it on accident.

this game is cursed for me. TRU missed out on their shipments and i ended up yelling at the cashier like the douchebag i am because i called and they said they had it in - it's about a 40 minute drive for me to get there.

i just refunded my pre-order and getting it by other means now.
This game beats Sunshine into the ground.
That is really good to hear. I cannot wait to play this game. Hopefully a friend of mine picks it up this week so I can bum it off him.

I picked up my preordered copy around 7:00 at TRU, and the cashier said the number of preorders outnumbered the copies they received by about three-to-one. I feel bad for the kid, because he's going to get his ass chewed by customers for the rest of the week. It's a really bad situation.

Anyway, I received the coin and giftcard with no fuss--I was in and out of the store in less than five minutes.
This game beats Sunshine into the ground.
I second this.

I liked Sunshine, but Galaxy really does make it look like complete shit.

It's a talent.

Really good game from what I've seen so far. Not sure if I'm going to be keeping my Wii after this week, but even if I get rid of it I may have to play through this first.

But seriously, fuck TRU for not even getting the shipments in...apparently at more than one place. They use DHL at the one I went to, which would explain it I guess.

I can certainly say that I don't expect DHL to have a contract for much longer.

Also, for those of you whose TRUs didn't receive the game today, I'll just consider that payback for 9 years ago when EB didn't get their Ocarina of Time shipment on the first day. All night, watching my friend play his TRU reserved copy... oh, the bitterness.

That's reasonable, right? ;)

... honestly, the only reason I'm posting is to stop myself from going through the whole game today. I literally have to force myself. I heart Nintendo.

i got my game this morning before noon at TRU and am probably not going to play it until winter break at the end of december....lol...the TRU deal was too good for me to pass up.
botticus, you'll probably beat me. I'm stuck at work all night and I'm probably going to have to work tomorrow afternoon (can I take two afternoons off to play a game? Really curious how the second half of the game is going to work.

^Thanks for the welcome Taya and Snake :)

I've finally had a few good solid hours with the game today and thought I'd write some brief early thoughts on it here. I've only got 5 stars so far.

Graphics: Easily some of the best on the Wii right now. DEFINITELY the best graphics out of all the games in the Mario series period. A lot of eye candy. It just looks brilliant. Some of the lighting and special effects I thought I'd never ever see in a Mario game but yet here it all is, enormously well done. It REALLY is running at 60fps. Thrilled about that, something usually only reserved for FPSes!

Music: All I can say from what I've heard so far, on my 42 inch HDTV in stereo is un-freakin-believable! Don't get me wrong, Mario 64 and Sunshine had a few good pieces in it but this is just wow..makes me almost completely forget those soundtracks. The music in this game is the step forward musically I was hoping for going from Mario World to Mario 64. Shame it took 16 years to get there but it finally did. Better late than never I suppose!

Control: Mario jumps when ya want him to, moves where you want him to, the Wiimote cursor's accuracy is dead on..nuff said near perfect play control.

Level Design: Geeeeezzz there is SO much eye candy and so much going on, it pulls your attention in 20 different directions but ya know what they nailed the execution here too. One minute you're doing one thing and the next it's throwing something completely different at ya but it just flows together so well and you can go seamlessly and flawlessly from one thing to the next.

One thing I did notice, and I want to mention it cus I've never gotten motion sickness is when first starting out, the game WILL disorient ya and it WILL take a bit to get used to it but you will in no time. Just during the adaption part I got a but queasy but it passed.

Early verdict: With 5 stars and virtually the whole game ahead of me yet...well let's put it this way. It's kinda the equivalent of Mario 64 just had a massive stroke and is in the ICU after this and it was WAY beyond too much for Sunshine to handle after Galaxy pummeled it..it's just laying on the floor dead, and lifeless. That's what's happened to the last 2 games in the series after being blown away by this game. Nintendo came about as close as you possibly can to a game that deserves a perfect 10. If not that a 9.9 but no less. Phenomenal! If you DON'T have a Wii either buy one and this game or try to find someone with one who will let you play this game. Everyone needs to experience at least some of and really should play through all of it and that's what I intend to do :)

QFT!

My wife preordered it for me at Target for my birthday, so I went to pick it up today, but they said it won't be out until tomorrow. I mentioned that games almost always come out on Tuesdays and that most other stores have it today, to which the employee responded, "Target's kind of in its own world when it comes to release dates."

Does anyone know why the release date for Target is the 14th when the release date everywhere else is the 13th? I didn't really have time to play it tonight anyway, so I don't mind waiting until tomorrow; I'm just curious about the logistics.

I've finished every level in the first galaxy so far, and I'm loving it. It's a ton of fun and much better then Sunshine. I'm really glad that we are getting a lot more boss fights. When I first saw the final boss of the first galaxy I literally said "Holy Shit!" out loud.
The only thing I don't like is that the controls in the racing level doesn't work very well.
Man, do TRU/Nintendo not know what the pre-order is for? Is this some sort of new concept to them? This is god damn idiotic.

/me hopes eStarland ships it tomorrow.
I wouldn't be surprised that when people found out about the $25 gift cards their preorders went way up, and some Toys R Us stores weren't able to get extra copies.

Why does no one around me have it at all. After I went to Target (where I had my preorder) and they said they won't sell it until the 14th despite having it, I resorted to calling other places and take my business elsewear. I get a ton of bs answers.

BB - "No shipment"

The 3 EBStops - "It doesn't come out until tomorrow"

CC - "What? Yeah we don't have it."

TRU - "This is TRU, yes we have the giftcard for Galaxy, no we don't have Galaxy"

I'm still under the impression that the street date was the 12th yet even a day later no one has this game, I'm pissed off.

fuck you Toys R Us! I was stoked to get home and drive 40 minutes round-trip to your stupid pos store only to find that "DHL messed up our shipment!" Yeah! Well don't use DHL morons! fuck!

Anyway...I picked it up at a local Fred Meyers so I can still buy at TRU later for the gift cert.

Galaxy is AWESOME! Wow. What an amazing experience. Game of the year so far without a doubt. To me, Mass Effect is the only thing that might challenge this. But for raw gameplay, Nintendo once again shows everyone who is king.

Good god, Nintendo.

You totally ruined your chance to say to the press "WE MADE 150 MILLION IN ONE DAY ON MARIO GALAXY! ALMOST HALF AS MUCH AS HALO 3!"

And do you know why? BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE ANY fuckING COPIES OUT.

GEEEEEEEEEEZ!

*throws hands in the air*
Colbert, how quickly did you get it back, and do you know if you got the exact same console back or did they replace it?

I might have to do this as well, and would like my console back.
Okay, I have called Nintendo, and recieved an email with my FedEX tags less than 10 minutes after the call.

I have dropped it off at a FedEX Pack and Mail (or whatever) with the tags around NOON on Friday, November the 2nd. It was at my house on Monday, Novemeber the 12th. It COULD have been here sooner, if lazy peeps at UPS would have delivered it on Saturday. It's more than likely going to be quicker to anyone living in a large metropolitan area (since they deliver to Mequite, it's likely that they don't have to drop it off anywhere else in Dallas).

ON TOPIC:

STAR COUNT: 12.

It has delivered everything that I've expected it to so far. And by that, I mean that it knocked me on my stupid ass.
