Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.

17 or 18 stars and not quite sure what one star thing at home base was talking about

It mentioned something about trick comets and racing comets or something to that extent. What was it talking about. First time playing since last night but don't remember anything about this.

Each galaxy has a comet pass by it. When it's passing through the galaxy you can go there and get the star for the comet. There is only one comet per galaxy I *think* and they're pre-determined. If you happen to miss one, it will pass by again later.

Can someone tell me more about the co-star mode. I'm probably getting the game later this week but wanna be able to tell the wife about it. Thanks much!

Second player can (Correct me if I'm wrong):

- Collect Star Bits [Move over w/ Pointer]
- Shoot Star Bits (I think?)
- Stun enemies [A]
- Cause Mario to jump and spin midjump [A on Mario]
- Make Mario superjump by both making him jump at the same time.

Dope! Thanks a lot. Reading some more in this thread this game really sounds badass. As soon as I can get out to a store I'm all over this. Thanks again!

I feel like I'm in 8th grade again! This is definately gonna chop down on Halo Time for a while. Are you going to have to collect 100 coins for a star in each galaxy?

It is. Im pissed i had to stop playing because my almost 3 yr old son wanted to watch a DVD. He was at the library and picked out a Barney DVD (I have never let him see one before), so now instead of playing Galaxy I am at the computer listening to Barney songs in the background.:bomb:
Well, MY wife was in a foul mood last night. I was telling her "look, this is like... this is like SUPERBOWL to me, okay, this is something that you can't kill the buzz on, I'm talking DIVORCE, I'm talking I KEEP THE APARTMENT, I'm talking WE NAME THE DAUGHTER ALICE.
Well put. I think this pretty much sums up how I felt too. Coming home with the game in hand I was just straight up smiling. I read enough about the game to know that it was probably going to be one of my favorite games of all time. That's a weird feeling. Having never played something and just KNOWING that you are going to love it. I am just glad that this Super Bowl is living up to the hype and that feeling. I don't think I could have taken the disapointment of another shitty Super Bowl. I am a Bears fan, and after the loss in the last super bowl I got blackout drunk, puked on a bar, got kicked out of said bar, almost got arrested, and got kicked out of another bar.

Locally, the Toys R Us deal turned out to be a bait and switch scheme. As soon as the ad broke, I went to all three locations: none would let me pre-order the game. And now that the game is out, they're all sold out to the people who pre-ordered.

In other words, the only people who could get in on the gift card deal were those who pre-ordered before the ad came out -- so why advertise it?

Anyway, I had another pre-order over at Target so I picked it up there. It was supposed to be out today, but they had it on the shelves last night. I'm glad I checked, because they forgot to hold the pre-orders behind the shelves which means they were selling them to anybody who walked in.

Plus, Target wouldn't let me keep my lenticular gift card. :(

The whole experience of buying this game was a huge cluster, but now that it's said and done I don't really care because the game itself is fantastic.

I'm amazed at the effort put into this game in comparison to Sunshine. The music alone is overwhelmingly epic; which is not something I'd expect from a Mario game.
I can't be the only one reminded of Disney World from this game.
You are not. I actually said this out loud to my wife last night. The music and the general feel of this remind me very much of walking through a Disney park, and that makes me very, very happy.

Early observation: LADIES LOVE THE BEE LEVEL. My wife was blown away by the
definition of the fuzz on the queen bee, exclaiming "THAT IS SO AWESOME!" and declaring it "the cutest thing she had ever seen" when I crawled around in said fuzz, scratching the itch as it were. Of course we both commented that perhaps it was feminine itch she was suffering from.

Played through a few levels last night. First thought was 'WOW!', followed shortly by 'Urgh, where is my Dramamine?'.

Not to sound rude but how much playing do you guys do to have beat the game already? Nothing else to do? I have played this thing about a bazillion times more than I play most video games and I am only at 20 stars or so.

Just wondering if you played all day and such.

I've finally come across my first complaint. Some of the powerups are too short. Namely the
fire flower and ice flower
. I'm having so much fun with them only to have it run out in what seems like a very short time span. It seems kind of pointless to have to pick them up again especially when they regenerate. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Question (20ish stars in)
Are the stars that Luigi obtains additional secret stars, or are they the actual stars that he claims to have found?

Finally got the game! Picked up my pre-order at GS, just walked in the door.

I've had to take some time to relax before playing. It's, by far, my most-anticipated game of all-time, so I've got to be in the right state of mind to experience it. :)

98 Overall on Metacritic.

13 100's.

2 90's (what exactly gets a 100?)

Other than that the lowest is 95.

We'll see how the reviewers judge it against Bioshock and Halo 3, etc... for game of the year. This has to win it.

I think the two 90s are both from sites with 10-point scales (with no half-point increments), so the game might actually be a 9.4 or 9.5 for them, but because of their limited scale, it knocks it down.

But wow, that's an amazing (but not unexpected) critical showing. I can't wait to pop it open and play...it's gonna be magical.

Once I get 3 starts in a Galaxy, should I move on? I'm going to be a completionist, but I'm not sure if there's more stars to get now, or I need to wait until later, or maybe there's only 3 stars per galaxy.

Spoiler me, I don't mind, just throw it in tags.

Just finished the third star on Good Egg.

Haha, that so true. Plus mario games are like what every 5 years? What the hell is the hurry!

At the start I believe you can only get 3 stars. Later on the amount of stars increase by playing some of the levels again (faster enemies, time limit, etc.)

Thanks. Will I know when these are available, or should I just keep popping back and see if anything has changed?

I'm a bit confused (8 stars)
I just got the 8'th star by finishing the Ray Surfing portion, and I had 15 lives when I saved, I turned the game back on and I have four now. Quite frustrating.
Other than that I'm loving the game so far.

There's a "mischief" comet that goes around allowing you to do levels again with those additional challenges. It changes every time you complete a level I think. You can also move it to another level for 20 star bits. You can see its current location on the map.

There's also some other ways to get stars which I'm not sure of. Luigi plays a Hide and Seek" type game where you have to find him based on a picture.

They can pretty much be obtained right away except for comets. Two different sets with two different requirements to be able to start them. Both are automatically gained if you just go through the story, so I put them in extra spoiler tags just in case.

- 3 Normal
- 1 Hidden
- 1 Prankster Comet
(Can start these after first dome is complete)
- 1 Purple Comet
(Can start these once you beat the game)

Man I wanted to get all the
120 + 1 if you count the hidden galaxy
stars, but I am not liking any of these
purple comet
challenges. I mean come on it brings back some of the worst aspects of the old 3D mario games. Namely
collecting coins under a time limit
, I thought we had moved past this Nintendo. Oh well back to the never ending quest that is Fire Emblem while waiting for Mass Effect.
Man I don't like having only 103 stars, and I so want to play as Luigi.

Last note this game is easily game of the year so far. I will see if Mass Effect changes my mind next week.

I've only played long enought to make it to the "hub" area. I'm sure this game will be as amazing as everyone says, but I have some tiny complaints and I feel like spewing my petty gripes at my interwebs. Feel free to agree/disagree:

First of all, in the opening area, I was diappointed when I tried to jump into the water only to hit an invisible wall. Mario 64 was a revelation when it first came out: "you mean I can go anywhere?" Sure, 64 had its share of invisible walls at its perimeters, but this one was pretty artificial.

(Note: I realize this is only because they don't want you breaking the path due to the story sequence that occurs. but i was excited -- it looked like a next-gen recreation of the mario 64 field and i couldn't get there. I'm sure there won't be much more of this later in the game)

Second, too much storytelling. I want to play! Not a big deal.

However, I am a bit distressed to find all the M64 "b" button functionality removed. I wanted to use the little dive to catch those damn rabbits just like in M64, but it's not in the game. It took a while without that move, and I kept shooting bits instead.

Finally, and this is probably something i just have to get over due to the nature of the game... i wish there were a way not only to center the camera behind mario but also to flip the camera orientation! Mario spent way too much time upside down on that first globe when the camera could easily have been normal. I felt I was fighting the camera a good bit.

Well, maybe I'm just cranky cause I had to turn it off to do homework (and um, post on CAG). I'm looking forward to pressing on in the game!! High point so far: reprise of the
SMB3 airship
theme!!

Considering the game hands out 1ups like crazy, it's not that big of a deal.
I guess it's a good thing he isn't being born next week. You'd feel silly calling Mass Effect home for supper.
Funny that you said that because it was a no go today (after getting bumped yesterday because they were too busy). 9 hours of painful (so I'm told) Pitocin-induced labor and almost no progress so they sent us home and told us to come back next Tuesday. When is Mass Effect's release date?

And what is it with stories (usaully in movies and whatnot) about people having their water break and rushing to the hospital and barely making it in time? That is a MYTH I tell you!

Anyway, to stay on topic, we are still considering Mario but that is on the back burner now, so to speak. And also my kids played Mario Galaxy all day while I was at the hospital. Happy Happy Joy Joy! I'm getting so far behind on work and next week will now be devoted to the baby so I may not get to put much time into the game until late December.

There's not much beyond the opening.

I think they replaced it with the long jump (Z+A while running).

Being upside down is part of the gameplay. Things wouldn't be nearly as crazy in some sections if you were always oriented normally. The first planet you're on is basically there just to help you get oriented with the wacky... orientations.

And frankly, I would be surprised if your feelings didn't change quickly. Getting to the hub area is barely even the beginning of the game.

-----------

Got my 46th star (6th grand star) and I might call it a day. A few of the galaxies in the bedroom dome are fucking hard. The
toy galaxy
was awesome, though I am not at all a fan of the power-up found there.

schuerm, I'm 3/4 of the way to beating it (which is halfway to 100%), and I've put in about 11-12 hours since Monday. It helps when you take Tuesday off. :D
Man, this game just puts a smile on my face...
My thoughts exactly. Nintendo somehow took fun and pressed it on a disc. This is the most fun I've had with a game in years.

Mass Effect might end up moving story forward in games, but Galaxy is pure gameplay. Simply stunning. My game of the year (so far) by far!

I am at 10 stars and loving it. I got my second grand star. It was lots of fun. I got the collector's guide(I like nice guides!) and it came with a pretty cool poster that I think glows in the dark. I need to get my black light and see how cool it looks under it.

Anyway, this game is fantastic. I am switching between Call of Duty 4 and this. Awesome, awesome game.

I think I have 5 stars now. Great game. I also got the CE guide, and it's very nice.

I'm going to get some serious playtime in next week.

Darn, you Target!

I went there today (Wed, 11/14) with my pre-order voucher and receipt. The kid at the electronics counter eloquently says "They haven't came in yet. You can check back tomorrow"

Haven't came in??

After work, I called another Target and took my voucher there. The kid at their counter gets my voucher, looks at my receipt and begins to study it like it was the Rosetta Stone.

Finally, after pouring over all my paperwork and the computer screen for roughly 5 minutes, he calls his manager and he rings me up and I'm out of there in about two seconds.

I really don't know of any store that has decent customer service anymore.

I put 5 hours into the game today. It felt good after finishing up some dumb bullshit. I'm now at 40 stars, but I've only been exploring three worlds. I am extremely anal retentive with everything, and do not move ahead unless I feel absolutely positively "done with the area at least for now."

My plan is to have as close as possible to 120 stars when I beat the game for the first time. To be perfectly honest, however, the exploration aspect is so outwardly awesome and addictive, and the level design is so brilliant, that I'm not really all that involved with the story.

There's one moment in there that reminded me of the Mr. Saturn tea party in EarthBound....

Those who are in the know will appreciate the weight of the previous sentence.

22 stars and being real thorough, want to take it nice and slow and not beat this bad boy too fast and have to wait another 5 years for a new mario game

It's a fantastic game so far to me... I have a nitpick too though, another poster mentions the lack of 'b' functionality, and I totally agree its a definite drawback (as a Mario64 alum).

No punching...no throwing enemies...no dive sliding...no sliding on your stomach... (or maybe I missing something)

at least the running jump and triple jump are still there...

-Dr. Ugly

Just got my second star in the Good Egg Galaxy. Pretty good so far. The constantly changing axis is a bit odd to try to work with.

Edit: Is there any way to invert the first-person view controls so that pushing the analog stick left moves the camera left, etc.? It's annoying as fuck the way it is by default.

Anyone else not really digging this game? I am 23 or so stars in and dont really know why I keep playing. nothing really catches me. Its good, but I dont feel into it. and that water level, the bowl or something, was god awful. Maybe my controls arent how I like them, but the swimming just really felt like crap.

Yeah same here. I picked up (insert generic FPS shooter and or Assassins Creed) for the 360 today and can't stop playing it. So much better than Galaxy. The innovations in Timeshift and Haze are mind-blowing.

You're mean.

Holy shit. Count me in as one of the people who play it and without knowing it get a wide smile across their face. This game is incredibly fun and more charming then any other Mario game I've played in a long while.

Only complaint I have is that there to seems to be a lag at times after you do a spin attack before you can do another one (pain in the ass when something like a Goomba is able to hurt you). Now I'm debating if I should ditch class tomorrow to play some more...

If Im remember correctly it says something about this at the beginning of the game.

Not that that changes how you would feel about it.

Well at least I know it's part of the game in a sense, but still even with that I am loving the hell out of this game...

Goddamn Nintendo, at times I want to really dislike the way the company is heading, but when they release something like this... I can't help but giggle.

I finished the game with 81 stars. I was really anal about getting all the stars for each galaxy, but towards the end I said fuk it. I really liked the last level.

Finished the game yesterday at around 95 stars. Am up to 108 right now though. Will max it out and continue on
playing as Luigi
but I may wait to do that after I finish a few of the other games coming out right about now. So that'll probably be a month or so.

Was sick yesterday (really), so obviously I called in for work. Needless to say I woke up and started playing and forgot to eat breakfast and lunch. By the time I realized it, the time was like 3PM.
