Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.
Just beat it.

Wow.

Game of the Year. Best game on any system for the past 2 generations. And I've loved a lot of games on the GC/Xbox/PS2/360/Wii to this point.
Congrats. I just unwrapped my copy, which I bought just an hour ago, and threw it in the Wii. This is the first game thats made me remove MLB Power Pros from its home, lol.

You liked this better than RE4? Cos your comment about it being the best game on any system for the past 2 gens is exactly what I would say about RE4. Now Im excited!

Also, I cant believe that you dont know what the 120 star secret is. I have hardly paid attention to coverage of this game (so as not to spoil it), today was my first foray into this thread, and even I heard what that secret was. :D

Are lives limited only to the galaxy you're in or something? I know for a fact that I had over 20 while playing through the first galaxy, but when I went to the Honeycomb Galaxy, I'm back at 5 lives.
Lives go back to 5 when you quit the game.

120 stars is very, very, VERY tough to get.
Harder then Mario 64? Because I did that as a kid.

It truly does remind one of why you started playing games in the first place.

That sucks. I don't see why it has to punish the player for not playing the whole game in one sitting.
Harder then Mario 64? Because I did that as a kid.
Ehh, the main game is easier (if you ignore getting extra stars before you beat the game) I think but some of the more challenging levels are probably more difficult. It's hard for me to say considering I don't remember the feel of the difficultly for Mario 64.
That sucks. I don't see why it has to punish the player for not playing the whole game in one sitting.
Honestly, it's not that bad. First thing you should do is go straight to the mail toad and get you five extra lives. Then on the more challenging levels you tend to get green mushrooms near the very beginning.

It's not quite like Mario 64 where you needed 100 coins to get an extra life outside of green mushrooms. This you only need 50 star bits and those are extremely easy to get.

DON'T CLICK ON THIS SPOILER TAG IF YOU HAVE NOT BEATEN THE GAME.
When everything was spinning around after you beat Bowser, I thought time was going to reverse, and you'd be back at the festival, except Bowser wouldn't be there. That would have been pretty great going up that hill from Mario 64, and going into Peach's castle.

Got my copy today. Ohh, that opening was pretty epic. Peach,, I'm comin' for you!!

Only have 3 stars, LOL, but that'll change later on! The controls at first confused me. It WAS weird playing a Mario game with the Wii-Mote/Nunchuk, but I eventually got the hang of it. Actually I think the problem is I haven't used the Nunchuck in a while anyway (30+ hours of Zack & Wiki as my last game..)

Well, I'm excited. Glad to see so many people enjoying this!

I can understand that, but it feels kind of cheap that not everything I do is carried from one session to the next. They should've either made lives harder to acquire or just not erased them to make up for that oversight.

Not that it makes much sense but I think it is follow precedent.

Then that means it's something that's long overdue. ;)

Anybody else get a Disney vibe from the music that's played in the observatory?

Okay, here's what I'm talking about in the spoiler tag. There are a couple of levels...
where you need to collect 100 purple coins. The only catch is they are on moving platforms and YOU CANNOT RETRACE YOUR STEPS in order to get them. I.E. you have to perfect the level, or you have to die and restart.

At least that was my experience. I'm sure someone by now knows what I'm talking about. Maybe that isn't the case. If not, I'd like to know so I can start a speed run file.

Maybe I'm just easily amused, but I've been having a blast playing with gravity. On the
Battlerock
galaxy I think I spent at least 15 minutes messing around with the saucer platforms to see how long I could get Mario to float.

Yeah, I went back and did that earlier today. I just let Mario hang there for a good hour.

I find this to be the most amaing and amusing thing in the entire game. Get mario to crouch, then just walk around while still crouching. The sound he makes and the way he looks is, in my mind, hilariously amazingly awesome.

seeing Mario do a single axel while ice skating as Ice Mario when he jumps. Brilliant.

Lovin this game so much. Just completed the Daredevil Run against the Bouldergiest. Hard but very satisfy once I beat it. I got about 50 stars right now.

While it's not my favorite game of the year It's in the top 5. Better than Mario Sunshine by far.

Anybody else get a Disney vibe from the music that's played in the observatory?

I sure did, got the vibe. But it's a good thing. The music is great. I love the retro tunes, especially the Mario 3 ones.
What do the crowns mean on the map? I see a few galaxies in the first group with crowns and a few without.
Crowns mean you have gotten every star possible in the map, and without them you haven't.

So much work to do, but since the wife demanded I play (heh), I'm now at 55 stars.

Just a quick jot down of things that I found to be amazing about the game...

Note: I'm a complete dork when it comes to games, so I'm most amazed by little details that may not necessarily add anything meaningful to the gameplay. The little details are what my gaming experience is all about...

0. Animation. EVERY fuckING ONE.

1. Level intros. I have, almost always, skipped those in Mario games - you see them once and that's more that enough. The Mario's flight into the level is so utterly breathtaking and cinematic, that so far none have gotten old.... Gorgeous, really, just really really gorgeous.

2. Bee Suit flying animation. I don't understand how they generate the wobble.

3. Dome 4:
Long Jump with Skates, and the switch between running and skating...

4. Dome 3:
Goombas with pumpkins on their head, and Goombas with helmets on. Those have their own sets of animation and A.I. separate from other goombas. The pumpkin ones are especially impressive, since they become "regular" goombas if you destroy the pumpkins with a spin move.

5. Dome 3 and beyond:
Luigi Stars - genius.

6. That the game send me messages to my Wii... Too cute, and too awesome.

7. Every boss is amazingly cute, all of the design and animation in the game is incredible (dome 3 spoiler:
Bouldergeist FTW.

That's my 7 cents.
Crowns mean you have gotten every star possible in the map, and without them you haven't.
Yup. And keep in mind, there are some stars that you just can't get until you've beaten the final boss after 60 stars.

Mailtoad needs to stop spamming my Wii message board ;)
Crowns mean you have gotten every star possible in the map, and without them you haven't.
Thanks. That explains it.

Edit: Thanks for the extra explanation. I've noticed places I couldn't reach, so that explains that one, as well.

Man, this game is addictive like a mother fucker. Good thing I don't have a test for a few weeks or I would be fucked. I have roughly 30 stars and just unlocked my third dome. If things continue like this, SMG will be my favorite 3D mario platformer, and right up there with Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3. In short, it's good shit.

Also, that Variety review is retardedly off base. As someone said earlier, it doesn't sound like he played the whole game. The split controls are fine. I usually have the remote pointed at the screen and the nunchuck hand relaxing comfortably across my stomach. It's teh comfy and natural. Well, it would be more natural if my hands were down my pants.

I like the left arm resting over my head with the nunchuk while lazily resting on my right arm and pointing at shit. It's actually relaxing to play :)

Hmm.. can't play today, damn work.
Got to 5 stars last night and I have a question ..

I noticed each level (Is this what people are calling "Domes"? Or are they the small planets?) have 3 stars. Now I do see this to be different then Mario64 and Sunshine, because weren't each levels 7 stars + 2 bonus stars? It's been a while.

I'm confused by the layout, too. I'm used to 64 and Sunshine..where you would just jump into a painting and that was your world. This is a bit more different, and it kinda intimidated me . Someone give me a quick, explanation on what's what. I know what's going on, but I'd like to piece it together with, ya know .. words..lol

I love having the controller in two seperate parts. It made Zelda TP a joy to play, and my hands never got cramped like they do with extended sessions of dualshock holding, or even worse, playing my DS.

Okay, I started the game and got a little taste, I got 2 stars. But I have to ask if anyone else does this:

I find that as Im wandering around the little worlds, I tend to turn, and twist my neck and head around to try and follow Mario as he begins to run sideways or upside down. I keep on doing this until my neck head is cocked to the side soo much i can feel it, and then I snap back upright and imagine what a tool I must have just looked like.

Of course Im the same guy that totally leans waaay over to the side when turning in racing games, lol.

just started playing this and only 4 stars in this game is awesome.

Whats the min. amount of stars needed to beat the game?
And also whats the average hours before beating it with the min. stars needed. ? 10 hours 20 hours ext....?
I'm not really sure what your question is but here we go:
Each galaxy within each the hubs has three main stars. The bonus galaxies (marked by question mark blocks on the galaxy maps) will give you one star each usually.
Sometimes you'll see two options of where to go, in this case
You've come across the bonus star for the world. You'll end up with a ? star on the star list for these once you come across the branching path, even if you didn't realize it
. Then there's something else that is explained later
comets will come by the galaxies and give you another challenge, either a speed run, a low-damage run, a fast-enemy run, or a race. One of those for each galaxy, but not one of each
. And lastly, after you beat the final boss once
you'll get the purple comet that will unlock a purple coin challenge where you need 100 purple coins to get another star.

In the end, you end up with per "main" galaxy: 3 main stars,
one alternate-path star
,
one challenge comet star
, and
one purple coin star
.

Multi-teared spoilers! Needlessly complicated!

Hey, there, lilboo! Sure thing:

Each dome is basically a "world" though inside of each one, there are several "stages" - those are your "levels." The amount of stages, really is quite high for a game that doesn't take but around 20 hours to beat... Part of why it keeps that "classic Mario" feeling is due to the fact that it's more similar to Super Mario World, or Donkey Kong Country games - you have a world, with a few stages inside.

There are several things you need to know about the structure of such world. First and foremost, you have a BOSS LEVEL - the only one that gives you a Great Star, rather than a regular one, and it will unlock the next world. Secondly, there are "big levels" - those are the ones that you say have "three stars."

Fortunately for us, there's much more than three in each one. I -can- spoil it for you, if you really want, but I suggest you don't click this one...
COMETS fly next to a level sometimes (they can be summoned for 20 star bits, though it doesn't work unless the level is ready for a comet), and if you choose to play in that level with a comet next to it, you will be forced to take whatever challenge the comet contains - there's everything, from a speed run, to a race, to defeating the boss with only 1 energy reading and no coins in the level... FANTASTIC stuff.
. The second "secret" star contains such a cool mechanic that I won't even spoil it if you asked me to - ask someone else. I love the very idea behind it. There are also some straight up "secret" stars that you can find by exploring the levels, feeding the hungry star guys, and being careful and keen in your gaming experience. Furthermore, I will mention that some stars are GREEN. Why - you'll find out soon enough.

In other words, each level can contain up to at least six stars. It has been also said that such levels can not be complete on your first play-through, meaning that something else will become available once the game is beaten.

There are also "small" levels in the game as well - those give you one star, and usually contain a wacky challenge unlike anything the game has offered until then. Those are fantastic.

And last but not least, each dome unlocks a hungry guy outside of it, which (if fed properly) will give you another of the 'one-off' challenges. These can be a bit harder (though that's not always the case) and quite fantastic in execution. But then again - what isn't in that game!

To summarize: DOME = World; GALAXY = LEVEL; BOX-GALAXY = SINGLE-STAR WORLDS; BOWSER HEAD = BOSS LEVEL; HUNGRY GUYS OUTSIDE = EXTRA LEVEL!

I really hope this made some sense.

60 stars, around 20 hours. You CAN beat the game in 10 if you don't give a shit about it.
60 stars, around 20 hours. You CAN beat the game in 10 if you don't give a shit about it.
You can beat it in ten even with giving a shit about it. I didn't exactly fly through levels and I didn't collect every single little thing as I never saw it as a need, but I did attempt to explore as much as possible and I still finished the game with 95 stars in like 14 hours. Though it took me about another 6 hours to get the last 25 stars since they are significantly more difficult.

Granted I still don't feel I'm done with the game as I have more to do since I want to unlock the final secret in the game, but it's really not difficult or time consuming to beat the game.

Beat the second section of galaxies, with 26 stars now, and the level where you fight
Bowser
is probably the level that most resembles Ratchet to me
(the platforms flipping your orientation, the sidescrolling parts where the path is being destroyed while you're trying to get past them, and the curving path that you stick to)
, having played Ratchet & Clank Future recently. Nothing big, but the deja vu was strange considering how different the games are.

I checked it out last night and there is indeed a very small "how to" for 2P mode when you start the game (if you click on the small P2 icon).

I'm 32 and my son is 12 and weve done more bonding playing this game than any other game in recent memory.

I couldn't get past the
Ray Surfing part quick enough to get the gold medal
and my son and I swapped controllers and he blew it out of the water (pun intended), while I was snatching up starbits.

Great fun indeed!

Ohh and the point of the thread is that almost every review and almost every post in the official thread, people just sorta mention 2P mode as a passing side comment and no one really talks about how much fun it is. Like I said, I picked it up because its a Mario game, but had I known how much fun it could be in 2P it would have captured my interest even more.

Gaming for me is about spending time with my son (as you can see in my post here) and doing something that he thinks is "cool". All his friends think he is lucky to have a dad who plays video games and Im "cool" with that :)

Got my 20th star last night and figured it was a good stopping point even though it was mid-galaxy.

I am in the galaxy where you had to
take out like 30 goombas on a big koopa-head planet. THat was fun. Also chucking bombs to blast open the glass cases is kind of cool. The coolest thing yet IMO was rolling around on top of that ball. Either that or Tarantax's web level where you have to yank back the webs and fling mario all over. It reminded me of flinging boogers.
I really really love the jumping mechanisms and how you can really get some great "air" when jumping from platform to platform, with each having thier own gravitational pull. I'm finally starting to get what they meant when they said they could really do some creative things with the gravitational system. I'm really enjoying it so far.

Tirade,

Good deal I am 28 and while I have no kids (besides my two God Sons) my wife is a big enough kid. So multi player is a great addition.... if only she wasn't on overnights for the next two weeks... uh retail work..

I'm 24 and have 7 younger siblings and between them and my wife I really want to try out this 2P mode with someone. I have a feeling this might be an easier way to get my 6 year old sister to really try out games like this. I got her into playing Wii Bowling, but other than that she can get a bit frustrated trying out the Wii. This looks like a nice way to bring her into more gaming with less of the frustration that she gets from games like Carnival Games (which makes fun of you if you lose, btw).

I haven't gotten any messages on my Wii message board from the game yet. Without spoilers, is there an option I need to enable? Or is this something that unlocks later on (I'm only about 12 stars in)?

Once you find Luigi you'll get those messages.

It's just a matter of getting accustomed to the weird orientation, and eventually you can do everything upside down. It's much harder to avoid when you're on very large planetoids because the curve is very broad... so you just slowly start to change your orientation, and you try to keep up with it.

I am just in awe of how well Nintendo made this game. Not only is it excellent to play, it's also great to watch (or so my roommates have told me).

I'm constantly surprised by the graphics. In the space junk level, the texture of the beat-up ships is probably the best example of that I've seen so far.

Not that the Wii is even close to whats available graphic wise, I am excited to play this game this weekend. I just picked up my Toshiba LCD HD and my Component cables just arrived from Mono price last night.

So this weekend I will be playing on the new TV.

I actually pondered, "How fucking twisted are the minds at Nintendo to make something incredibly trippy as this and have it turn out so damn good?"
