Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.
holy crap...this game is the new #1 on gamerankings (from critics scores)

can't be that good...can it?
No, it isn't. The game is shitty just like the system and company that makes it.

I have neglected SMG for my SMG on CoD4. I am sad. I love the game though. I have some days off from school coming up, so I should be able to rock out some more stars on the game. Maybe even beat it.

I just
beat the first Bowser boss fight, and right now I can tell you that just made my top 5 boss fights of all time. It had the Mario 64 theme going, it was just so nostalgic and amazingly fun
No. This is just 21 pages of hating on the game. Move along.
chill out rocko

how would a person know if this game is or isn't overhyped and if its even worth getting (without going back through all the other pages, of course)

Are you seriously questioning buying this game? If so, then you obviously wouldn't like it.

As I said, move along. Nothing to see here. The game is actually a steaming pile of garbage. We just like to trick people into purchasing it.

For a long time, I was speechless. SMG had literally robbed me of the ability to think coherently, compose thoughts, to breathe.

There's just...this incredibly simple child-like wonder. Every last thing glows. That's the best way to think about it - everything illuminated, everything so seemingly beautifully ethereal.

I can't recall many games where I just smiled the whole time I'm playing it, if there's even any that accomplish that.

It's weird....Mario has always been about jumping, and with that, has always been about a downward force. Galaxy originally made me think that this was completely ruined, abandoned in order to accomplish free flight in a truly 3D world. But it doesn't remove it - it absolutely enhances it in every way possible. It is no longer only about being down when down suddenly exists everywhere.

And I think this change makes Mario happier. All the little animations, every level, the incredibly epic feel of it all...it's like he himself is happier. A completely fictional character enjoying everything just as much as me.

And that is truly something to think about.

When you quit the game and it asks "Do you really want to quit?" there shouldn't be a "yes" option. There should be a "No" option and a "No, but sadly I just have to" option.

Well it's not the best game ever (IMHO) but if you own a Wii this a good reason why you still do.

My words exactly, but you put it so elloquently. This could possibly be the game to finally take Super Mario World from my favorite game of all time, its so damn good, fun, amazing, everything.

I have 54 stars right now and I've had it since the 13th. I've been trying to make it last as long as I can. I can see what IGN was talking about in their review, the first 60 stars are pretty damn easy to get. Regardless of that I still say it's my game of the year. I haven't smiled this much while playing a game since Super Mario 3 when that was first released.

Played a bit with my girlfriend yesterday. Graphics are very nice and the art design is phenomenal. Not quite sold on the gameplay yet though, it's been pretty average thusfar even if the rocketing between sections keeps the pacing up.

Was really weird how the 2p can make your chara jump, kind of threw me off and I found my girlfriend sabotaging me sometimes.. hmmmm

also wish they allowed you to skip the incredibly stupid cutscenes.

Finished Dome 2. Didn't really like the Galaxy selections. I have every star available up to this point. I think it's 26 or 27. Loved the first Bowser fight. Will probably finish the third Dome tomorrow.

I got 4 grand starts and 42 stars so far and I've shocked at how much I'm playing this game. So far, in roughly 2.5 days, I've dropped 12 hours into this game and that's insane for me even if it is Thanksgiving break.

80 stars, nowhere close to wanting to beat the game - tons of levels to beat, and stars to collect.

Working my way through what appears to be the last set of levels...

Despite a few really fristrating points in the game, I'm really, really, loving this one.

Story owns. Anyone who claims otherwise needs his head checked. And, uh, the music... Perfect. Pretty much perfect.

EDIT: I've been playing this title for 20 hours so far. This is probably the slowest, least rushed approach I've ever had to a game, like, ever. :)

Everyone who wants to not beat the game until he/she maximized the amount of stars:

I'm on 90, and can see myself getting close to 100 without an issue without beating the game once. I most certainly have unlocked a few awesome things, though there is an area or two that I'm not sure of.

One "puzzle" in the game was so awesome that I was like "oh hell yeah!" It lasted about 10 seconds, though, but as far as gameplay mechanics are concerned - that one was mustard.

With all the praise this game been getting I still feel that it's underrated.

My brother got it last night from Best buy...I played through some of it
first 5 stars
and for some reason it felt like something was missing..

Maybe it's just me, but it just doesn't feel as great as these reviews make it seem (unless of course this will be just like Psychonauts which I despised the beginning but loved the game from then on)

Hopefully it's the latter, I don't want to be losing my touch with Mario ;)

This game gathers awesomeness as it goes on like a snowball falling down a hill.
Sting Ray racing is a bitch.
The only thing about the game that I'm not fond of. I did the second Sting Ray level last night, hopefully it's the last.

There are
only two.

Man, oh man...game got really good on stars
5 - 11

I take back what I said about not living up to the hype...it's good, but I wouldn't consider it "the best" good

I just started playing today and boy is this game fun. Reminds me of Mario 64 but with more fluid motion. I only got the first 4 stars so far but am enjoying it a ton.

So...I'm at
184 stars
right now and I've got to say I'm getting frustrated. And it's clearly understandable considering where I am.

It's still Game of the Year

I was trying to get the star on the third level of the desert planet and for the life of me, I'm not getting it.
The star at the cannon tower at the end's not the star I'm supposed to get? Was there a star at the ring of rocks that I was supposed to take? I could've sworn I got a hidden star from that one.
Did I miss something?

I'll try to help ya out :) I JUST did this star a coupla hours ago! If I'm doin this markin spoiler thing wrong I aplogize..wanna be considerate of others...but anyway, if this is the star I'm thinkin of...
At the top of the tower, or close to it, there's a crate that you gotta spin to break. Once that's broken you fall into the inside of the tower. Close by there's another crate thingy. Break that and after that...KEEP MOVING! Sand will immediately start to fill up the tower and ya gotta get to the star before it completely fills up. It's not difficult, ya just gotta be quick!
Hope that helped :)
Whose smart-ass idea to make up the Purple Comet trial for Toy Time?
Clearly, Nintendo wishes to offend nerds on the internet they've never met before.

And who live in different countries.

And don't speak their language.

In fact, Nintendo is really snarky. I think they were the ones who took a baseball bat to my mailbox.

Joke is on them, though. I had bought that mailbox last week. So now I can put up my old one again. The one with the wasp nest.

Try your hand AGAIN, Nintendo!

TRY IT AGAIN!
Whose smart-ass idea to make up the Purple Comet trial for Toy Time?
I just got that one tonight. A tip to get more coins:
Jump towards those cluters of coins off the map, spin as soon as you hit them and push hard to the side to land safely

It's a nightmare star to get, no doubt.

Sitting at 92 currently. Just getting into the galaxies in the last dome. :)

108 stars

things are getting harder. dreamt about the game twice so far. this one and zack & wiki own me rotten.

rotten.

i don't seem to mind, though.

Sitting at 114 currently.

I beat the game at 104, and really enjoyed it. Then, of course, I found out what happens after that.

Toy Time Purple has made me come closer to breaking a controller than anything in years. I still haven't gotten it. :bomb:

Overall, though, I'm not finding most of the Purple to be all that tough. They may take a few tries, but the Toy one is, thus far, the only one that's been mind-bendingly, I want to kill someone every time it says 'Too Bad', tough.

Toy Time Purple is basically just running around like crazy and hope to god you don't die.

So relieved when I got that star. I'm working on the Garden galaxies right now. Have around 102 or so.

Don't know which one you're talking about, so I'll put both:

The real star:
After getting the five pieces in the DryBones tower, destroy the big spiky plant on the planet you land on.

The hidden star:
After getting to the aforementioned planet with the big spiky plant, there's a stump that you ground pound and music notes you have to pick up.

Me too! This is the first game in a long time I have dreamt about. My in-laws are currently playing Z&W so I am getting ready for them to either:

a) finally beat it
b) give up

Either way, I really wish I could get my hands on it.

I've mentioned before in other threads I generally can't stand platformers, particularly 3D ones, but I'm greatly enjoying this game. I think the weird gravity elements help calm my falling-to-my-death fears, though it's still there at times. (Sweet Sweet Galaxy drove me nuts, and I'm glad my fiance did (26 stars)
Freezeflame Galaxy, cuz all that ice skating would have driven me mad as well
.) I love, LOVE the co-op in this game. The co-op elements help a lot for folks like me who are incompetent at platforming, and it makes watching somebody else play or taking turns a lot more enjoyable. I'm only ~35 stars in, but I'm digging this. I also love how I can play it in short spurts, though I often end up not doing that cuz it's so addicting.

For some reason, the Purple Comet on Toy Time really did not give me that much trouble. I finished it in about 5-6 attempts, it wasn't that bad. The trick is lots of long jumps/spins at the right time.

Now the one that gave me trouble was the Daredevil Comet on Melty Molten. I think I died at least 30 times before I finally finished that one.

Roommate bought this, and it's incredible. The co-op is more fun than I could have imagined. Saving my roomie from deaths is my main occupatian now. And freezing bullet bills and chain chomps? Seems pretty cheaterly to me, but I ain't complaining.

Now, my plan this Thanksgiving is to bring the Wii home, and show my father Z&W and Super Mario Galaxy. I know he'll at least give Z&W a spin, because he's an oldschool adventure gamer. As for SMG - I'm really hoping that he'll take a look long enough to get impressed with something. I've been thinking long and hard about how to make the man's holiday the best, and since WarioWare didn't cut it for him, (well, to his credit, I was an asshole and did not bother to explain what's going on and he still came in second after my sister)
I am crossing my fingers for him to really see what "this Mario business" is all about.

God, I need this break more than anything. I really, really fuckin' do.
You know, putting spoiler tags around what stars you're on has got to be the worst use of said tags ever. You think we don't know that you can - gasp! - get stars 5-11? The idea is that you put what star you're on outside the tags, then spoilerific comments inside them.
guess you're right, thanks for the tip..

anyways, is it true there are only 120 stars in the game...I'm only at 23 right now (2nd dome), but it feels like there is a helluva lot more

I beat the game last night... and damn, that final stage/fight was EPIC!

I'm going back to get some more stars now. I don't know if I'll have it in me to get all 120 though I plan on doing so.

Some more tips to help others below

Remember, their are 150 coins in the level. I didn't notice this until I read the sign at the beginning of the level.

Luckily, I had only died 4-5 times at that point. It took me 20-30 lives, but you can eventually developed a pattern to attack the level. Once I had my pattern down it took about 2-3 tries.

Lastly, very very important about this level. The star appears where you begin the level. So leave a path to return to the starting point.
