Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.

From whats been said, the only thing you'd know is that there is a red star, it can only be used in the hub area, and it has to do with getting around.

Massive jumps? Super speed? Warp star ala Kirby?

I also need to know. I wont be playing until xmas, so tell me now. dont forget the spoiler tags

Star #39...
vs. that buldergeist w/o being able to get damaged
when playing in order of course was truly epic once I managed to beat it

I started tonight and have gotten 12 stars so far. I love the game besides the
stupid gimmick type levels (Ray Racing or whatever and the roll on the ball level). The controls don't seem responsive enough and the levels just simply aren't fun.
Other than that , the game is awesome!

The red star in the hub is used for more than just getting up high quickly. There are a couple of 1-UP mushrooms out of reach where the star can come in handy.

i'm starting to go through the purple star levels. they are amazingly hard. the time limit is very small and you really have to have a plan of attack.

Amazing.

I've noticed two groups of people who apparently hate this game, assuming I'm ignoring fanboys and graphics whores.

The first was the group that hated it because hating it seemed like the cool thing to do, and they can all slap each other on the back as if they were comrades in some kind of magical war I don't think actually exists.

The second is the group that suddenly rose up after this game momentarily achieved the "best rated game ever" moniker. I mean the second that went up, I saw dozens of "Wtf this game isn't that good, I don't even like it, I'm only playing it because mom won't drive me to the arcade" type comments all over the place.

This is not meant to incite argument. Maybe discussion. I'm really just stating an observation.
Ah who cares, Strell.
Hey - you're allowed to make your *coughdumbcough* suggestions to a Microsoft Handheld, I'm allowed to notice things like that.

:p

I saw this coming... being heavily active on GameRankings, I'd see this crap all the time. Giving a game in Galaxy's position a score that's lower than average boosts a site's traffic a lot so smaller sites have lots of incentives to do it.

Like I've said, the Videogamers.com review is a joke and is only the beginning on this crap. That reviewer is exactly the type you're talking about.

Even I'll admit this game is far from perfect but is in no way anything lower than a 9.5.

Oh well, I'm still enjoying this game. GotY.

:p
I just want something new! Even if it's powered by evil. :)

Just "beat" the game with 65 stars. Loved the ending. Can't wait to collect the rest of the stars- no way I'm stopping here.

any tips on the level to get to bowser.I can get to where all the bullet bills are but everytime i try to make my way forward to many lock on to me and im toast.

I've come so freaking close to smashing my wiimote and nunchuck its not even funny.

stand in a spot where the bullets will hit the statues. when the bullet explodes run like hell.

Bought this game today. Unfortunately I made the dumb move of buying it for my bro for Christmas. No way can I justify the cost of buying it just for myself.

It's going to be a long month :(

searching for purple coins is turning into a ton of fun. i'm at 116 now and i've got to go to work. some of the spots where these coins are hidden are just plain genius. really really good.

i was frustrated by some of the timed levels early on but i've figured them out and have been able to move on.

and now that i'm doing it, i like that the purple comets weren't available until after you've beaten the game. i liked it back in the old days when new levels and such were opened up after beating the game. what better reward then to play more challenges.

and i've been replaying some of the boss fights. i love the hell out of these. i like that they stay true to the platforming style of the game and that they don't go to something else like in 64 or sunshine. and i also enjoy having a recurring boss fight that increases in difficulty. which is how mario was in the first place.

How many stars can you get until you have to fight Bowser? I'm gonna try and do that.
I am up to 86 stars now..I just
Completed the Gateway Galaxy & completed it and got my first red star. I just opened up the Boo's Boneyard Galaxy (haven't completed) and opened up all the galaxies in the Garden Dome. All the other stars, I have.
So my question is..when will I be able to get purple coins? Is there a red star for every galaxy? Just wondering what my last 34 stars are..besides the few galaxies I haven't even started

Wtf. I tried to buy this today at CC. I called in and the lady said they had a lot. So, I go in an hour later and I don't see it on the stands. I ask an employee if they have it in-stock and he says that they had like 100, but he would check in the back for me. He comes back and says like "Yeah, we didn't get a shipment of SMG's today but we are possibly getting some tommorow."

lol?

You only need
the 6 grand stars plus a total star count of 60 to start the final level but you do that by asking Rosalina. You never have to fight Bowser besides a few sub-boss fights.

Unfortunately, I've taken a break from this game since the zapper and the TRU B2G1 free sale happened (picked up TC: SO and Ghost Squad for myself and Mario Party 8 for our friends' kids for Christmas). I'm at 45 stars, just completing the kitchen and the first star in the bedroom - a very fun, solid controlling game. I just wish I had some more manipulation over the camera at times.

At least it's not like how it was at my Best Buy, where they said they sold out but then they had literally stacks upon stacks of copies sitting in various parts of the store.
How many green stars are there and where can they be found? We have 2 now, and think we need 3 to open something up.
You might want to check out GameFaqs, they tell you where all the green stars are located. Also, when you are looking at a level make sure to check to see if it has a "?" mark on top of a green star when you're entering it.

Just for clarification on those wishing to beat the game...

you DO NOT need to collect 6 grand stars in your 60 star total in order to reach the final level of the game. You need 4.

Green Stars

The 3rd Green Star for most people is probably the one found in the Dusty Dunes (desert) Galaxy. I believe you have to start the level where it asks you to make your way to the upside-down glass tower. There's a planetoid in the level where there's a giant stump and some flowers. I can't be too sure. But instead of taking the already existing Launch Star, there should be a Hungry Luma on the other side of the planetoid. Feeding it stars will create a new pyramid-shaped planetoid. Inside you'll find the sand level constantly rising and sinking, from end to end. You have to collect the 5 Silver Stars to create the Green Star. The thing is that the Silver Stars are scattered all over the level and you have to maneuver your way from section to section via the wall as the sand level rises and falls.

I can't really remember the exact deets, but that's approximately how it went. Feel free to make any add-ons or corrections.

88 stars going through and getting all the stars. Its killing me, I want to play, but i don't want to finish and have to wait another 4 years for another mario game

Man, this is really off topic, but I'm so fucking drunk - thanks dad! Shit, my folks got me man drunk off of good ass wine two nights in a row. SHITS it's been a long time.

I have to look away to type... :] that's good shit.

Concerning SMG - 122 or so stars into it. LOVE IT TO DEATH.

My dad said that he prefers the gameplay in Zack & WIKI - I agree, it's my GOTY, but then again - I adore where SMG has taken it all. Can not wait until the you know what with the you know who, and I'll be severely disappointed if it doesn't come to fruition. Mom's laptop doesn't have the spell checking extension for FireFox, so I'm really sorry if I'm not making sense - I IZ DRUNK AS SHIT.

Man, my folks are pretty damn cool. Dad - especially so, since he was happy mom went to the bathroom and insisted on playing through the Flute Golbin level in Z&W - all by himself. Hell yeah, I'm proud to be related to this man.

If you want to know what MC is like when he's drunk, here's what you do.

You go find the old Channel 4 episodes of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" You know, the ones with British comedians, no shitty fat fucker American host, and actual - you know - intelligent humor.

There's one where they do the news show, right? In one of them, Stephen Frost is the sports announcer, and is given the role of an English soccer hooligan fan. He stomps around on the stage screaming out "ENGLAAAAAAAAAAND! ENGLAAAAAAAAAAND!" while picking up his chair and slamming it around a few times. He loudly disparages other teams and their fictional games, laughing at his own jokes, and waving his arms around wildly.

That's basically what Colbert is like after he's had a few. Giggly, smiley, destroying my furniture, and screaming out "ENGAAAAAAAAALND!" and gesticulating in very pronounced manners.

Which makes no goddamn sense. The son of a bitch isn't even from England.

104, you'll get the 105th for beating bowser. and then 15 purple comet stars.
Argh. I'm at 119 stars. Can anyone guess which one I have left? Why does it have to be so difficult?
...Which one?

Toy Time - Luigi's Purple Coins
i eventually found a somewhat stable route though that mess to get my 100. but it took me a long while.

i'm 14 stars into my second run. i'm still having a ton of fun. i think i'll start playing a little more casually. i've got a couple game i'm going to get back into as well.
for the post 120 action.
it feels like luigi is just a little bit harder to control. i haven't checked to see if this is really true. but it seems like he just can't stop right away. is there any other differences anyone has noticed? i haven't got to a point where i can tell if he can jump higher or not.
i'm curious if you'll get anything fun for beating 120 with luigi. i hope so, but i kind of bet that there will be nothing.

I don't know. I haven't played it, Japan hasn't played it, and my buddy hates it, but I'm not going to talk shit about it. Just felt like dropping in here.

120 star spoiler:
Luigi is faster, jumps a little bit higher but has less traction. It's easy to notice the difference since Luigi will slide a bit while Mario can stop on a dime.

The only other difference (that I hear) is that there as a 121st star in an additional galaxy once you collect 120 stars with Luigi.

ooh, that's very good news about the
121
. that gives me a lot to look forward to.
about luigi, that sounds about right. i had thought that mario stopped a lot faster but i couldn't remember. it makes me really happy that they've kept the traditional luigi controls. though i've honestly never enjoyed them because they've been too hard.

i'm looking forward to taking advantage of his higher jumps but i'm betting that his lack of control will kill me on some of the really hard levels.
Well...areas
requiring 100 coins out of 150 aren't that hard to beat, but are only hard to survive
.
Took me like 10 damn tries to beat it. I got 100 every damn time but couldn't get to the star.
