Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.

Put in a 3 1/2 hour session tonight up to 53 stars.

I've basically just been going to each dome and getting all the regular stars before doing the boss stage. Just finished the Bedroom, have the Engine room up next. Will do each dome before going on to the last boss.

I've not been going out of my way for other stars, but have found a few hidden stars, done all the feed the hungry luma to open galaxies, and done a couple comet stars--man are those timed levels a pain in the fucking ass! Not sure I'll have the patience to get all 120 with those bastards and the damn 100 purple coin crap. The comets moving around is kind of annoying too, which they'd just make those stars available permanently after getting the first 3 in the level.

But still, a phenomenal game on all fronts. Easily the best of the 3D Marios. But the best 3D platfomers will never, ever touch the best 2D platformers, so I'd still put Super Mario World and SMB3 ahead of it in the series. :D

I'm 92 stars in now with my son (he did a lot of the early ones by himself and I started playing at around 30-40 stars). I don't have a problem with the timed comets and the races. But I am having a HUGE problem with the first Daredevil comet. It has been there since very early on and there's no way I can get past it -
the one with the rock ghost guy who throws stuff at you and spikes you from below. No way I can do that without getting hurt, yet I've managed to do 3 or 4 other Daredevils in 1-3 tries
. Any tips?

Hello... I hope you're talking about
Bouldergeist
(best name ever!)

I beat that one from the first try, the only one that ever gave problems was the very first daredevil (first world) - and by first I mean, if you feed the hungry guy that moves the comets for you. You can generally unlock everything using him immediately after clearing an area (as soon as you see the outline you can do it).

Now, for the help that io asked for:

I can tell you that you need to run around him all the time. Everything he throws _towards_ mario, you should shoot down with the star bits - I've played most of the game without barely using star bits as an offensive force, and I should tell you - they are mega useful. Apart from that you need to watch out for the ghosts, so you don't die by mistake.

However, the key to this fight is speed. The fastest method of hurting Bouldergeist is by placing yourself between the bomb boo (black ghost) and bouldergeist, spin, and hold the nunchuck direction stick towards the boss. As far as I remember, this causes Mario to only have to spin the bomb guy ONCE at MOST.

Also, Mario doesn't have to be extremely close to the bomb ghost to pick him up. Bouldergeist can't really turn, so running behind him and shooting the rocks with the star bits should keep you safe for as long as it takes for the bombs to approach you. Just keep running AROUND him to prevent getting hit by the earth spikes.

If this isn't helpful, I am very sorry.

Yeah, that's it. I haven't tried it again recently and when I did, early in the game, I only gave it 4 or 5 tries. I'm pretty sure I kept moving, but maybe I didn't shoot down the rocks enough. Aren't you limited with the number of star bits you get though?

And you'll have to explain that other bit to me. I saw the star you feed to make the comet move but I didn't want to do it as I wanted to finish that Daredevil first. I thought I might not get it back if I moved it, but that probably doesn't make sense ;). Is there actually a level you play when you feed him that is separate from the comets in the regular galaxies?

Comet-wise... I don't know if it's just my copy of SMG, but at times the comets would disappear, despite not having been beaten. I've had to bribe that star bits eatin' fool with 20 star bits to make all the comets appear, which is exceptionally useful when hunting down those crazy purple comets. His "move it" thing basically means "trigger comets on/off" in every stage that hasn't been beaten. I bet I'm the only one in the world that had to use him, judging from what everyone else has been saying about their gaming experience.

Damn, it's early... What is it about the night and working alone that makes it more fun than with the sun out? There's way more fun shit to do outside of "working" at night, yet somehow it's ever so much more tolerable.

See what I did there? I digest.

Best thing about ASCII - I can say this shit with a straight face to all the non-creepy people that aren't peeping in my window.

After a few tries I got that star. The fform should be easy. After he star using his hand just keep circling around until you get a chance to attack. If you see the ground growing dark jump. Took me longer than the other daredevil but it wasnt too bad.

Yeah, I got it tonight after a few tries. You can also just retreat to the edge when he starts to ground spike. And it always comes in that same pattern so it isn't too hard to just stay in the middle of them.

But MarioColbert's advice was pure junk ;). You can't keep shooting all those rocks because you only get 11 star bits at the beginning and then a smattering when you defeat his first form. But, really, it isn't necessary to shoot them anyway as you can just run in circles (which he did suggest). J/K, Mario, by the way ;).

OK, now I'm at 103 stars without having "moved on" so to speak. Spoiler about where to go from there:
Is it possible I have maxed out the number of stars you can get before taking on what I assume is the final boss (moving the ship to find Peach)? I did all the comets and the star who moves Prankster comets does his thing but no more show up. I've found all the ? stars, the red star, and the 3 green ones (and done those galaxies). So I guess I just need to do the end, then come back and do these purple coin things? If I get one star from the end game, then that leaves 16 additional ones. They aren't ALL purple coin challenges are they?

I did this. I got every star possible before the only thing I HAD to do was go after Bowser. There's 104 stars, Bowser is the 105th. After that, you come back and the Purple comets will start to appear. There's one purple comet per galaxy, which happen to be 15 of them. So yes, stars 106-120 ARE all purple coin challenges. Believe me though, I am going to say MOST of them are pretty easy. They just happen to be more annoying then anything. :whistle2:( There's really only 2, MAYBE 3 HARD ones.
Good Luck! :)

Then what am I missing if I'm at 103?
I've gotten all the "feed" star things done, the green stars, the red star, and as far as I know all the dome stars - I see (and have done) one extra and one comet on all the regular galaxies. Is there some wierd hidden star out in the ship? I do have a "New" on the map at the very bottom (off by itself). But I assumed that was Bowser.

Hmm..
Yes, the "NEW" is Bowser. I really don't know which one you may be missing.. :whistle2:k. Did you get the 3 stars from trial galaxy area? (When you get the 3 green stars.) Get all of Luigi's stars? I'd say talk to the black Luma near Rosalina. Look at the map and click on each galaxy just to make sure. If you don't see anything, then I'd say just go fight Bowser. I am nearly 99% sure I had 104 stars when I went to Bowser, and not 103. Since there's 15 stages with 1 purple comet each that makes up the last 15.

My son and I play this co-op as well. I use 2-player to hold back Bullet Bills so they can't get him, and you can actually destroy the Bullet Bills and large rolling boulders by making them collide with a second one. There are more than a few levels he could not have finished without me watching his back and keeping the Bullet Bills away. Great co-op addition to the game.

EDIT: I can't believe so many people couldn't get a handle on ray surfing. It took me three tries to complete my first ever race, and I won by 30 seconds.
Yeah, I'm surprised too. I beat the first race first try, and I thought it was fun too.

I just suck at tilt control in games. :D So wasn't a fan of the Ray Surfing or the ball riding.

Just don't have steady enough hands. Would vastly prefer analog stick control for those events.

There comes a point where you have to move on and then afterwards, you can get the rest of the stars.

hey, i need some help finding the hidden star on the ghostly pirate ship level (garden dome). i just want a TINY hint, as vague as possible that might help, along the lines of "use the cannon" or "look in the water" or "check around the ship," something like that.

Maybe invest in that shit that Snake used to fight Wolf in Metal Gear Solid. Or cut down on the Red Bull.

Suit yourself. I loved the ball-rolling bit. It's like... you know you shouldn't go fast because then you'll fall off the edge, but you want to go fast because going slow makes the music sound sad. And do you want to make the music sad? No, you fucking don't. So you go fast, and the music sounds like it's enjoying itself.

Yeah, I did the one ball rolling thing so far super slow, and didn't both trying to pick up stuff, just took the easiest path to the star.

Ray Surfing annoyed me as it was hard not to over steer, and the waves added to the problem.

Not terrible, I just not much of a fan of motion control stuff in general.

Look in the water.

Let me know if you need further help. That star is quite tricky.

I just hit 109 stars. I'm almost done.

I have to agree with what a lot of people are saying... I had no problem with the motion control stages, and enjoyed them immensely.

It's all about pacing yourself, and timing. Also, like someone said avoid ALL of the extra crap in the stage. I found no use in picking up the coins or the star bits, so leave them be and just concentrate on getting through.

In fact, I thought the Mario ball stages had the best motion controls of any Wii game thus far. Easy to go, stops on a dime, turns nicely... perfect.

I loved the motion stuff also. Very tight.

On a related note, what is the hardest star? (How many purple coin levels have 1 minute time limits? My son got one of those on the first try.)

I'm at 117. All I have left are the three
Trial Galaxies
. This shit is hard. Sigh. I don't know if I even want to bother.

Seriously!

If only Super Monkey Ball controlled that well....
Seriously!

Aside from the fact that SMG and Monkey Ball are mimicking different types of ball rolling, I thought Monkey Ball control was spot on, better than Mercury Meltdown. It was all about steady hands and precise movements.

The music tempo varying with the speed of the rolling in SMG was an excellent touch, just one example of how extremely polished this game is.

Where is
the hungry luma that gives you all of the comets that everybody's talking about? I have quite a bit of excess star bits.

I finally got past that final purple coin stage. I've started
Super Luigi Galaxy and gosh is he tougher to control. Anybody wish they would have included Super Peach Galaxy if you finished SLG with 120 stars?

This is correct, but he doesn't give you comets, he moves them. You never have to pay him.

Slightly more targeted help (just giving you a better idea of where to look than what I said before):
Don't follow the star bit arrow.

That's what I did, and I beat them. It just requires a lot of patience.

You are so wrong, it's funny. :)

I love this game.

Man, Z&W, MP3:C, and SMG. As far as I'm concerned, this is one of those "holy shit" times. I know a lot of you probably played MP3:C back when it came out...

Man, two more weeks. And then it'll be Fire Emblem time. If Fire Emblem is even half as engaging for me as Z&W was, I'll be in vidja game heaven.

LOVE.

about the post 120 action.
i just beat a purple comet level. i was on a moving platform, collecting coins, avoiding flying balls and glowing electrical walls. and it's just so hard to do with luigi. in most situations like this. where a game is just hard because it's hard to control your character, i'm unhappy. but this is a unique game, where it's harder on purpose. it's really funny if you think about it. could you imagine, if in metroid prime 3, instead of unlocking hypermode. they just unlocked a new character you could use with more difficult controls.
but for whatever reason, i'm still having fun. and i'm getting better and better and mastering luigi.

Finally hit 60 stars, but I don't know if I want to get whatever stars I have left to get that are available, or go to the next step. I move forward, I might lose interest in the game.

I had a big grin on my face when I play this damn game, though. I can't remember any other games that do that.
just finished all 242 this morning...
one of the most rewarding video game achievements i've ever had.
Is the
Final Galaxy
worth it? I'll beat it regardless, just asking... :]
Up to 11 stars in my second playthrough. I think this time I'm going to get 104 stars before I fight Bowser.
Is there a specific reason for doing it that way?

It's been so long since I played the game. Damn difficult semester, otherwise I'd be playing it now. But only two more weeks than I can go back and collect the remaining 33 or stars I need to get 120.

113 now... Damn, some of these purple comets are tough bastards. I don't think I'll ever be able to do the Toy Galaxy one. That's right up there with the red coin challenges in the "retro" levels of Mario Sunshine. I considered those unplayable.

About the Toy one:
OK, so *possibly* I might be able to get 100 coins on this. I got 60 in my best attempt so far. BUT, if this is like the Mario level previously then the star will pop up back at the beginning. And since most of the platforms are gone or rotating at that point I can see struggling for 20 attempts to finally get 100 coins only to have the star be unattainable. Then there's a fucking TIMER on top of it all :bomb:. Sadistic, Nintendo, truly sadistic... Anyway, if someone can tell me where the star pops up I'd really appreciate it. I'm *hoping* the level becomes static once you get 100 coins (no more rotating platforms and whatnot).

Also, in the Dusty (desert) galaxy:
How do you get the ones on top of the Thwomp? I cannot get up there with the nearest whirlwind and back-flipping doesn't seem to work either.

Heya there, io! Glad to be of service:

Yes, the star does pop up in the beginning (where you start). There are 150 coins in that level total, so you can miss 50. The way that I've been going, is by taking an immediate left (long jump to grab all the stars) and then hopping over while hugging the left edge. Generally, I'd trace the perimeter of the mario shape, all the way towards the life. After getting that life (btw - you can grab the star bits in the very beginning of the level, as well), I'd become more reckless, since it's "all or nothing" at that point. I do want to point you towards the little clusters of purple coins that are around that area - a hop into them, and a spin (while holding left or right to get back to a green square) will give you five coins in a single "jump" and there's at least three such "treats" giving you an easy 15. It sounds like a small amount, but trust you me - it pays off huge at the end. Another MASSIVE cash-cow are the two rather long streams of stars that can be picked up with the long jump - those I always get at the end of the level. I speak of two lines that are directly ahead of you (and they go towards the right-edge of the level). You might want to ensure that the four green blocks that you would arrive to by jumping to get them on the furthest right-hand side are "skipped" - jumped over - as you are picking up the coins there, to ensure you can cash in on those coins. If anyone has an overhead map of the level handy, I'll be delighted to show where things are at - I was not put off by that level, or at least not as much as some other people.
Also, in the Dusty (desert) galaxy:
Like this:
1. Stand next to the Thwomp, and turn your back on him (pretend he is the wife who's all like "you're being so loud!")
2. As soon as the guy lands, you do a back-flip which will place Mario all "hugging" the wall close to the Thwomp's top. (Pretend that he's the wife when she's all like "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be all mad at you, I'm on my period...")
3. Press A to jump (Mario will soar upwards). (This is to ensure that the wife knows that there's no reason to constantly tell you you're being too loud - you're the breadbringer who brings the bread, after all, so the hugs are temporary)
4. Shake the Wiimote to spin (You're about to flip the script). Make sure your left hand is holding the direction TOWARDS the Thwomp. In other words, you jump off the wall to be above the Thwomp and immediately spin onto the top in one gorgeous, soaring motion, which makes the spectators go all like "oooh!" and "aaaah!" and "man, you cheatin!" (haters are everywhere).
5. Congrats! You've just performed an "ON THE WALL - OFF THE WALL" (OTWOTW or OTW^2) jump, you can now start applying it everywhere, for speed runs and whatnot. (You're on top of the Thwomp, so the wife parallel of this one is way too obvious. I hope that my wife doesn't know that my user name is MarioColbert on these forums, though she'll prolly get it all from the "you're being so loud!" remark. POUT. If you see an edit of this post, that means I'm in the doghouse...)

Bah... The toy one sound impossible still. I had no idea how to get those floating circles of coins though. I didn't realize you could hop off and spin jump back. I just fear the platform would have disappeared in the mean time. I'll try it some more tomorrow.

Please tell me this is by far the worst purple coin level! I hated the 2 scrolling ones that I did (where if you miss a coin you are screwed). Those were very difficult for me but I stuck with them and got those done. By far I prefer the ones without missable coins or timers, though I haven't had too much trouble with the timed levels YET ;).

I have been playing this singple player for a couple days now, I have 23 stars, but my wife wants to play as 2P sometimes... What do I need to do to set it up so she can play as P2? Just turn on her WiiMote?

bread's done
