Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.

Just beat the game with 105 stars..
That was awesome.

GTFO. So Mario, Peach, Bowser, Toads, ETC All die?!?! That's really deep for a Mario game, lmao! Can't wait to get the remaining 15 stars now!!

it was deep. a far different feel to sunshine. baby bowser being confused about whether or not the princess was his mom was hilarious. but this one was far more dark.
it looked to me that bowser had died after the fight as well. but from what came afterwords, i think it's clear that he and all the other baddies will live to kidnap the princess again.

Got back in town, powered through the last three levels of Halo 3 last night and this afternoon and fired up Mario Galaxy this evening.

What an incredible game. Only 5 stars in, and I'm already blown away. It's just flat out FUN. Graphics aren't shabby either, wasn't all that jarring (some jaggies aside) going from playing Halo 3 in glorious HD for several hours to Mario. So nice to see a Wii game that finally looks a good bit better than a GC game.

Level design has already been great. I was skeptical of the little planets, but it's a blast to shoot from planet to planet as you never know what's around the corner.

Having costumes back is great as well, Bee Mario is fun to play around with. :D

Can't wait to play some more, probably fire it up again tonight.
i eventually found a somewhat stable route though that mess to get my 100. but it took me a long while.
Did you go clockwise or counter clockwise? The objective itself isn't hard. It's just the crazy jumps that you have to time just right so that you don't fall into the dark matter or slip on the flipping platforms.

120 star spoiler:
Something else I noticed with Luigi today that doesn't happen with Mario. Apparently, when you're underwater with Luigi each spin you perform sucks about 1/16th of your air supply. I went back and checked with Mario, because I did not recall it happening and I was right, underwater spins with Mario do not lose air. Did anyone else notice this and think it's a little strange? Spinning was just about the only redeeming quality of swimming only to have it slightly crippled with Luigi.

Take the ball rolling stages verrrryyyy slooooowwlllyyy. My son tried it about 10 times and got frustrated. I did it for him first time through, but it looked like I wasn't even moving sometimes because I was inching along.

BTW, we "finished" it today (at 60 star minimum). Great game. The 2-player co-op is genius, and I dare say my son could not have finished it without me holding a few Bullet Bills at bay in various stages. :)

i went clockwise. mostly because i died less often on the left side. and i was able to get the 1up before doing the more dangerous jumps. and also because i was able to hop over to that left platform without stepping on too many of the green tiles i wanted for my return trip.

interesting.
usually with luigi he's more difficult to control but he's got better abilities. i wonder if he's got some sort of underwater advantage to counter losing air.

After playing it and getting to around 90 stars, I dont really think it deserves to be the highest rated game of all time. It's fun, but I've had more fun with a lot of other games, and I can't see myself wanting to replay it again for a couple years. I don't want to bother getting the rest of the stars since they're mostly time trials and collect the coins, and the secret galaxy you unlock for getting every star in the game isn't even worth it.
There is seriously a fucking purple coin missing in Freezeflame. I traced my steps like 15 fucking times, and I only have 99.
reminds me of the time I couldnt find a red coin in yoshis island. it drove me nuts. :bomb:

Look above one of the ice pillars at the beginning, it's floating up there.

You need to go on the cliff and long jump towards it to get it.

Ah, thanks. I got it. I just backflipped and spun to get high enough.

It was like the exact size of the pillar, so I didn't see the shadow.

Thanks.

I finally started this game yesterday. I'm about 28 stars in and I really like it.

I absolutely hated Mario 64, so I'm really happy with Super Mario Galaxy. The boss fights in this game are way fun.

Yeah, the boss fights are great.

The other thing I like is that getting different stars sends you on different routes through the galaxies.

Rather than just going back to the same world and doing some new race, fetch quest, etc. like in Mario 64 and Sunshine (and most 3D platformers) thus far it seems like most stars send you through totally different paths, new planets etc.

I love the variety of that, makes it feel more like the old 2D mario games.

Could change as I'm not far in, but love that aspect of the game thus far.

I had 69 stars when I beat Bower's Dark Matter (boss stage of bedroom dome), and the one-eyed chick asked if I wanted to rescue Peach, so I did. Now it's asking if I want to save, and I'm not sure if I should. I'm wondering if I'd be missing any stage or special ending by beating the game "early" (I never made it to the engine dome). It won't let me continue without saving (if you say no, it asks if you want to quit without saving instead of going back into the game).

Still trying to avoid any spoilers so I'm not reading any of the previous pages.

You're being silly and paranoid.

This is the deal (spoilers are in increasing order, just so you don't spoil too much if you dont' want to)

1:
The game does not end after you defeat Bowser. It doesn't "continue" either, not in a direct sense - beating the game clears a star, but coming back allows to beat everything else in the game.

2:
Actually, defeating Bowser does unlock one particularly "big thing" and perhaps a few others, though I don't know how many of those 69 stars are GREAT stars...

3: (EXPLAINS THE MEANING OF 2)
Purple Comets become available, if you've cleared the GATEWAY galaxy (first one that you played) then you will know what I mean.

4:
You need all 120 stars to unlock the rest of the game.

5: (BIG ONE, extension from 4, and 4 is possibly a safe one)
120 stars unlock Luigi!

6: (Clarification of 5, if you don't want to know, don't read)
The game forces you to beat Bowser for the second time to make Luigi available.

That's all I got to say on the matter.

1.
what are GREAT stars

2.
how do i beat the gateway galaxy? do i go back for another star?

I went ahead and beat the game and now I'm slowly working on the
purple comet stars
and the Engine Room dome.

1.
I'm pretty certain he meant Grand Stars, not GREAT stars. Grand Stars are the Stars you get when you beat Bowser Jr or Bowser. The big stars. There's a different song to them and everything..

2.
After you collect the GREAT Grand Star from the Engine Room.. the Garden Area (last dome) opens up. The Gateway galaxy is the way to get here. Basically, there's a floating island..and that has the Gateway galaxy on it..and then that also takes you to the Garden Area dome.

Wow. The Dark Matter Plant (30+ Stars in) is annoying.

I'm at the part where the gravity changes all the time. I had to stop playing to avoid breaking my TV.

Man, I'm sorry about that 5th spoiler - not cool. I should have written a warning about that. Stain on me, man... Apologies and all, this sucks.

1.
Yeah, I meant the "cleared the world" stars - the next dome is not unlocked until you collect it...

2.
The Gateway is unlocked upon your successful completion of the Engine Room. I don't know if it requires you to have a certain number of stars or not. It's a little island that is on the way to the Garden (top room of the "overworld" - sorry if my lingo isn't up to par). Inside thereof, there should be a purple coin - collecting game, and a very VERY impressive powerup.

I played the game in the most thorough, least rushing way. I did not beat the boss of any of the domes until I was done with everything prior to it (short of only three secret stars that I've missed), and I've collected most everything until I beat the game for the first time. Because of that, I don't know if certain places become unlocked based on how many domes you've beaten, or how many stars you have gotten overall. It could be a coincidence that I got my last "Boss Level Star - Grand, Great, whatever" and reached the necessary amount to unlock the you know what. Sorry.

Okay, thanks for all the answers. These
purple coins
are pretty annoying. It took me a while to get them all for the Honeycomb level.

My buddy attended Nintendo World in NYC whenever, and he came back from Houston (Thanksgiving and all) and brought back the presents that he got us - I totally forgot that one mention that he made on the phone with me from NYC that he "got me something awesome."

Toad and Peach figurines - Toad for me, and Peach for my wife. They look amazingly awesome. And after that, he -apologized- that Mario wasn't available.

Man, that kind of shit is awesome, and makes my home a better place! My friends own.

Finally completed the game last night (120 stars)
Great game. I don't think it's "HIGHEST RATED" (or even second)..but it's up there. Most of the game was fun, but there were a handful of stars that just weren't fun. ..they were just were annoying! :bomb:

I don't know if I'll be completing the game again anytime soon...but I will get around to it.
I want that 121st star

Are they the little ones with a base that says their name and then the figure on top (they are not one piece)? Are they specialized Galaxy ones? I got a luigi one a few months ago at NYC and they ran out of the mario ones too.

Just got that star last night on my first try--I just had to take the gravity changes super slow.
I WAS NOT INFORMED?

:[

LOOK AT THE SAD SMILEY.

Look at it.
I see the frowny (that's what we call "smily" when it's "sad"), but then I wonder.... It was midnight when I got it, and your response here immediately follows my bragging. So you were informed. Man, I'm not too comfy with calling motherfuckers after midnight - I don't know what you and your woman are up to - midnight is that "questionable" time during which I only feel comfortable calling my single friends, or programmer friends. Or people who do drugs (see previous criteria).

That'd be the ones! They're really awesome looking.

In a related bit of news, that same friend had another friend over who rented this game called ASSASIN'S CREED for the PS3.

Really funny. "This is your genetic memory DNA."
(And this is your certificate for huffing keyboard cleaner while making the game, you crazy ass game developers!)

By funny, I mean in a bad way.

Dialog snippett: "Is that what you REALLY want?" "It IS."

Man, all the haters are right - that Assasin Game with a lazy eyed protagonist and piss poor collision detection is the future. Super Mario Galaxy? Sorry, it's been confirmed now - this one SUCKS. Apparently, we're all morons for loving it.
Started playing this game recently, pretty good. Can't wait to get some more play time in.
hi.
hello

just being polite, like my mom told me

Just beat it last night with 104 stars. I'm not doing those Purple Coins. I hated collecting 100 coins in Mario 64 and I know these Purple coins are gonna be even worse. Besides that the game was golden.

they're not very hard for the somewhat linear levels with lots of planets... but the huge wide open ones are a b$tch. i just did the beach bowl level and i feel super lucky i found them all

Just so I know what I have to look forward to, what do the purple coin levels involve? Are they timed? I don't mind searching...It's timed challenges (like the purple comet where you have to race the ghost or where there's a time limit on the level) that bother me most.

They're only timed if there are more than 100 in the level. You only have to get 100, but because there's more, they give you a timer.

There are some timed levels with only 100 purple coins in them -- so you have to get ALL the coins and return to the spawn point of the star within the time allotted.

I tried doing one of the open levels and I accdently died after I found about 80 coins. It would be nice when you died you kept all the Purple coins you already found. I can imagine myself spending 30 minutes collecting these coins missing 1 only to goof up and die.

I dd a few but it just wasn't fun for me. Oh well, the rest of the game was a blast.

i'm about 60 stars into my second run. i'm getting a little burnt out.
but i really want to see what's to come after the second 120. i haven't heard anything specific but how could it not be good. i'm trying to take it slow. but once i sit down to play i just can't get back up.
i'm trying to take it slow. but once i sit down to play i just can't get back up.
Considering that I'm swamped with work this semester (a lot of which isn't for school at all), I'm amazed that I'm at 122 stars. So, you're not alone is professing this game to be as addictive as crack cocaine with a little bit of cough medicine to spice things up.

Right. I forgot about levels like the Gold Leaf Galaxy, etc.

i was freaking out on the haunted boneyard purple coin level with the 1:00 limit before i realized there were more than 100 purple coins. it still took me about 5 tries though, or maybe ten.
I didn't spoil myself until recently, and I'm glad I did. Spoilers on the type of bonus, (character, boss, music, etc.) not the exact bonus
It's another galaxy. Would have exited me, but the exact galaxy that you get disappoints me.

The controls for throwing turtle shells are a bit sucky. Made the 2nd bowser jr. fight unnecessarily elongated as it was hard to throw straight.

They should have made it just aim and press B to throw it at that spot.

But VERY minor nit pick and a phenomenal game. :D

I really liked the boss battle before that one in the galaxy with the exploding ghosts. That was tons of fun!
