Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.
Holy shit. Count me in as one of the people who play it and without knowing it get a wide smile across their face. This game is incredibly fun and more charming then any other Mario game I've played in a long while.

Only complaint I have is that there to seems to be a lag at times after you do a spin attack before you can do another one (pain in the ass when something like a Goomba is able to hurt you). Now I'm debating if I should ditch class tomorrow to play some more...
Schuerm26's right. The game mentions that the little luma that gives you the spinning ability shoots away from you when you spin and you've got to wait for him to get back under your hat before you can spin again.

I don't buy into hype... I mean I figured it would be good (I loved Mario 64), but I wasn't going to fall for the "SMG will blow you away" or "SMG will be the game that redefined the Wii". I've enjoyed the Wii, I just havent been blown away by it and SMG wasn't going to change that.

I WAS WRONG!

Blown away is an understatement.

My son and I played last night and neither of us wanted to turn it off! (even my wife kept peeking at the TV)

This post does have a point though. SMG is a hidden 2 player gem and I think it deserves to be pointed out more than just a side-note.

A few things that maybe you don't know when playing with a partner.

1. P2 can focus on collecting starbits and bombing enemies if need be (you all knew that)

2. P2 can freeze/stun the enemies while P1 beats them up.

3. P2 can also freeze objects/block certain objects. For example,
When fighting the lava boss that spits out coconuts, P2 can grab the coconuts and hold them while P1 avoids the hot air cloudies and then P1 can run over and kick the coconut thats being held.
and
When doing simple things just as trying to avoid the bubble blowers in the Bee galaxy, P2 can pop the bubbles while P1 runs around
(my son loved this part and it REALLY felt as if we were working together as a team, we kept high-fiving each other!).

4. Working together by doing things such as jumping at the same time (when the P2 star icon is spinning), causes Mario to do a super jump (possibly higher than his normal super jump).

While its not supposed to be a 2 player game, its probably been the best 2 player game we have played together in years.

I bow to the Nintengods!

Note: You can do most of these things as a single player obviously, but most people don't know that P2 can do more than just collect starbits.

Please feel free to add other things you can do with a 2nd player.
At 53. You're right there, right, botticus? ;)
No. :whistle2:( My platforming skills were destroyed by two of the galaxies in the bedroom, so I needed to take a break at 46, 3 hours for those 12 stars. Awesome boss battle though.

Only 14 to go!

My brother and I played it last night. He was having a great time since he usually enjoys just watching games like this. I am really happy they choose to add this to Galaxy.

Its a good post. I new the starbit part but have not rady much ont he game on purpose. This post in and of itself helps me.

Is this printed in the manual somewhere, or do you kind of figure it out? (I am picking up my copy at lunch today).
For those who have finished it, what do you figure is the replay value? Is it something that you'll go back to?
Most definitely. Although it won't be right away unless you're keen on getting the final secret which requires
two playthroughs at 100% each
. The enjoyment of the levels, especially some of the more challenging levels were quite fun despite how agonizingly difficult they were at times.

My only real qualms with the game were the camera angles in a few of the underwater parts as using C to move the camera behind me wasn't working at the time and occasionally my controls would flip out when I was making a lot of quick movements while the gravity was changing. Also got stuck in place three times but those were quick to get out of and rather insignificant. Oh and one level was partially re-used in the game, but ever so slightly changed which was a tiny bit disappointing too.

Unfortunetly the main part of the game is rather easy (and thus can be short at around 10 hours), but when you think about Mario, it tends to be geared towards the less veteran players I find it acceptable. To counteract that though, Nintendo put in some more challenging things like the "Trial Galaxies," which were definitely higher on the difficulty bar as are the
Purple Comets
on some galaxies. Could use more difficult galaxies though.

All in all, the game was great and exceeded my expectations. To me it feels like it took Super Mario 64, added a pinch of Super Mario Bros. 3, and just refined the experience ten times over but with completely new, refreshing content. Completely great experience and the final battle was really good as were the cutscenes. Although the final phrase Mario says was rather... stupid.

No idea on the manual part (very well could be), but this is just from what we discovered while playing last night.

I figured the same info was buried in the official thread somewhere but searching for it pulled up too many posts that had nothing to do with actual 2 player gameplay.

What happened to posting your star count in front of your spoiler tags!?

Anyway I have 15 stars now.

Biggest videogame misnomer goes to.....drum roll please......
"Sweet Sweet Galaxy" Man I had a blast trying to get that friggin star and it really reminded me of the jetpackless platforming levels in sunshine. I fell through hoels a couple times and on the second part of that galaxy I messed up some jumps and it caused me my first GameOver. Very dissappointing.
They could treat falling off platforms like they do in Zelda and just reset you with the nominal charge of a health unit, but alas, I was bitching yesterday about how it wasn't challenging enough so whatever. A whole life just seems a little stiff. I was hoping to make it through the entire game without any Game Overs.

ON a separate note, I ran into my first (15 stars)
comet, it was a speed comet in the space junk galaxy and really like the idea. I'm looking forward to my first prankser comet to see what they mean by "wacky" but dont spoil it for me.
So far: LOVING IT!

Yeah my wife and I played last night. We took turns each level with the other player being p2. This works REALLY well. It's a hell of a lot better than I expected (the 2p part) and I can't wait to play again tonight.

I managed to hit my first comet level last night... it was a race against myself. Holy shit. It's like playing Mario Kart against an almost perfect ghost. I think I died about 10 times there.
Is this printed in the manual somewhere, or do you kind of figure it out? (I am picking up my copy at lunch today).
It is actually in the game. On the file selection screen, before you click the start this file button (or whatever), there is another button for 2-player mode info. There are a few screens in there that explain all of this to you.

Nice post though, OP. It seems aside from many people not looking at manuals these days (I admit, for this game I went straight to playing), many people don't even view what is in the game itself.
I managed to hit my first comet level last night... it was a race against myself. Holy shit. It's like playing Mario Kart against an almost perfect ghost. I think I died about 10 times there.
Those comets aren't too bad. Unless you did it on one of the later levels that requires a bunch of quick, precise jumps to beat him. There are worse ones out there I think. Especially one comet in particular that you haven't seen yet. You'll probably hate it on some levels a lot. I think I failed one level 10-15 times because I made one minor mistake every time and finally ended up beating it with like 4 seconds left on the clock.

You're going to love Trial Galaxies too. I died multiple times on each and I tried to be extra careful on each but they don't exactly let you go slow. :p

The water galaxy in that one. It was a race where you have to dive in the water, grab a shell, get through three rings, jump up the steps, and race to the star, and if you mistime anything, you lose.

12 or 13 stars in. Some observations:

Sweet Sweet Galaxy:
Probably my least favorite galaxy so far, and not just because I died 30 times within sight of that fucking star. I still ended up with a significant net gain in lives since I got that bonus mushroom every time and collected most of the star bits, which I think offsets the "harsh" whole life penalty pittpizza was talking about). Mostly I just thought the galaxy was not anywhere near as pretty as the other levels. That and lazy level design. Electrified barriers? In a candy/cookie level? Wouldn't heating elements (like you're in a giant oven) or traps full of sticky chocolate or something make more sense? Anyway, I finally got through it only with the assistance of my wife, who made me double jump right at the end and finally got me to the star platform.

Space Junk Galaxy:
My pick for the best looking galaxy (so far). That nebula in the background is jaw-droppingly beautiful, as are some of the textures on the junk, like the rocket ship.

Ray Surfing:
Didn't think the controls were bad. It was just really hard not to fly off the edge. But the rays. Oh God, THE SCREAMING OF THE RAYS. Those screams will echo in my nightmares. FOREVER.
The post asked WHY, not IS...
well, I wasnt so exited about the multiplayer until I read the post. It seems this guy had a lot of fun with his son and that the MP wasnt a throwaway ''meh'' like zack and wiki's pointing co-op. besides, whoever makes a thread, they can choose whatever topic they like. if you dont like it, dont click on it

Just beat it at 60. Amazing game. I'll play through it COMPLETELY, then I'll give my opinion on where this ranks as far as Mario's go... but its pretty fucking high up there...

also
when he started to ice skate, I actually started to giggle.
This game is made of pure happy

46 stars thanks to my extended lunch break.

Just got the second of the green stars - and whatever that green-portal star is for whatever galaxies it will unlock, shit's sounding mad promising.

Man, the concert is tomorrow, after which I'm getting the well-deserved rest that I wanted - it'll be a Super Mario Galaxy kind of a weekend.

Super Mario Galaxy is excellent.

Not sure why anyone gives this schmuck at Varity an exclusive; guy managed to shit on Galaxy in a "review" while recommending users check out "Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, now available for PS3."
Oh God, you are trolling the game:

Great review expressing your viewpoint. I'm sure you're probably laughing at the stupid fanboy conspiracy theory nature of gamers at this moment, and I don't blame you at all. They're need to get over themselves.... Glad someone shares my opinion about Mario Galaxy. In addition they even complained when Gamespot gave the game a negative point of not having story... plain and simple gamers are dumb. Don't worry bout it.

Wow, is it that short? I won't be playing it until Saturday, but I was able to pick up my TRU pre-order with the $25 GC on Wednesday. It was their second shipment after they sold out on Tueday. I thought I was going to miss out. Can't wait to start playing!

Don't agree at all. Especially this part:

Holding the nunchuk, which moves Mario, and the Wii-mote, which makes him jump and spin, in separate hands, is an awkward arrangement. Since there’s only one thumbstick, players rarely have control of the camera and when they do, it’s not easy to manipulate. While the designers usually put the camera in the best position possible, it’s inevitable that gamers will sometimes wish they had a better view.

I was just playing last night and thinking to myself it was the best way to play. The wiimote functions could go either way, but I absolutely LOVE having the analog seperate. With this design I get to rest both arms on the arm rests of my chair instead of in my lap. Now if only they'd get rid of that damn wire.

I've also noticed playing how unusual it was to not need a camera control. Not once have I wished there was a camera control which is unheard of in a 3D game.
http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117935396.html?categoryid=1269&cs=1#

true that
Really? You agree with this statement?

As good as the game is, though, it’s evidence of how bad the Wii is for third person action games, a problem first made clear in last year’s “Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.” Holding the nunchuk, which moves Mario, and the Wii-mote, which makes him jump and spin, in separate hands, is an awkward arrangement. Since there’s only one thumbstick, players rarely have control of the camera and when they do, it’s not easy to manipulate. While the designers usually put the camera in the best position possible, it’s inevitable that gamers will sometimes wish they had a better view.

So the fact that the nunchuk and wiimote are held in two separate hands makes it an "awkward arragement?" Wow.

I also like how SMG is evidence that the Wii is bad for 3rd person games, which was made clear by Twilight Princess (current metacritic score of 95, btw). I really remember TP getting savaged in the reviews over the awkward controls.

More importantly, “Galaxy” doesn’t make good use of the console’s motion sensing abilities. In a transparent add-on to do something with the Wii-mote, players can collect “star bits” by pointing at them. But they aren’t integral to the game and pointing at them is a chore.

The last sentence is completely false as you need star bits to progress to other domes in order to travel to other galaxies. Also, if the add-on of pointing at star bits is "transparent," then how did the reviewer notice it? ;)

Another thing this "reviewer" got wrong is that he says there is no camera control. I assume he didn't notice you can use the d-pad to change your view as well as go into first person view to look around - just like SM64. Despite the fact that you can change your view pretty easily, it is rarely needed in SMG.

I don't think this guy played past the intro (which is weak) and maybe the first galaxy.

I agreed, from what I played at E for all. I picked up the game at BB today (I mean how could I pass for $25) so I'll see how good it is. I'm just saying that the guy is expressing his own opinions and stupid fanboys are accusing him of being on Sony's payroll just because of one cycling sponsor ad. Also I also found twilight princess rather bland by the 3rd dungeon I was bored to all hell.

I don't see how i've trolled at all. Stop being so defensive =p
I swear.... say one negative thing about a game and suddenly you're insulting their mother.

Oh god, shut the fuck up.

It is trolling if your whole experience - from your own mouth - is based on a demo from E for All. It is also trolling if you pick out the one review amongst DOZENS singing praise about the game that is OBSCENELY out of line with all the others, especially when said review had "Sponsored by Sony" shit-eating-grin-gleefully posted right next to it.

You have a habit of trolling in these forums, so I'm afraid that's strike three. In fact, I knew before I came in here that "Zoglog" in the SMG thread had to be nothing but trolling. You've earned that reputation for being a fuckstick, and now you're whining about it.

Go hide behind your bullshit elsewhere, because this is stupid. The fact that you can't see that it is INDEED trolling when you go into a thread for something you don't know shit about and/or don't like means you're an idiot.

So shut the fuck up.

Let me ask you all this:

Are you that insecure in your own opinion of the game that you wave a little flag whenever some video game critic writes a review you happen to agree with? Are you that insecure in your own opinion of a video game that you get mad at someone for... disagreeing with you?

Nobody should give a shit what people think about something they did not create, and even if you do tend to hear people's opinions of your own creation a particular sense of "adequacy" needs to be brought up. Nobody - thanks to the internet we have way too many people spouting uninformed, mis-informed, and anti-informed (a.k.a. FALSE) opinions about everything.

As far as the classical "idea" of what written criticism is (as its been "brought to form" with literary and film criticism) - that's fucking gone. Critics are now mere commentators, without things like "theory" at their disposal. Roger Ebert's uber-nerdness is somewhat of a blessing at times, yet even he falls prey to "the blogger's own power trip" syndrome.

Granted, I disagree with most points made against the game from a personal point of view. I could tell you what I feel is missing from PS3 games, or why I find it liberating not to have my hands at a funny angle which helps with my carpal tunnel, but my opinion matters just as little as whoever wrote the Variety review.

However, I do thank Zoglog for posting this (although he did for a completely different reason, and he still loses cool points for trying so hard to enrage the people in this thread). After playing the game for a while, I've come up with a series of things that I can see certain people disliking. I certain can find particular mechanics that others may be annoyed, confused, or challenged by. This reivew makes no mentions of things that I've thought of, and makes a number of critical nods towards things that I have found to be perfectly awesome. That, above else, was fairly educational.

Before any Nintendo fans decide to jump on Zoglog's ass about posting this review, do recall how shitty it was to be a Nintendo fan in Nintendo 64 era. Since PS3 is the new N64, the least you can do while playing no less than three games that are all "GOTY" material (according to ME, bitch) is spend less time telling Sony mercenaries to fuck off, and a little more time at your delicious console.

(Unless you're at work... When you're at work, NERD RAGE MUST BE OFF THE CHARTS.)
[rant]
Is it wrong that I laugh gleefully every time I read a rant posted by Strell? There is nothing that brightens my day even half so much! :applause:

I should catalog those, they're pure gold.

EDIT: I enjoy MC's posts as well.

I'm not anywhere near as far in the game as some of you. I plan to fix that this weekend. Um, when I can get away from family and work obligations...

Is the sponsored by Sony logo gone for anyone else? It was there 5 minutes ago and now when I load that page it isn't there for me.

Edit: Nevermind. It's back now.

It's flipping vareity. The people who actually read that would rather spend 30 hours on dlisted and bastardly than play a mario game. What does it really matter?

congrats, I'm sure your mirror is pleased and you can take your own advice. But seriously, your obsession and infatuation with me is disturbing. I recommend you get some help.

As for the Sony Logo, it's a rotating sponsor ad.
congrats, I'm sure your mirror is pleased and you can take your own advice.
There's not a mirror big enough in the world that can adequately frame my nuts, so I'm afraid I could ever pull this off. Maybe if they changed all the satellite dishes in Mexico scanning the cosmos for signs of life (think the movie Contact) were instead replaced with reflective surfaces, and then I flew up above them while wearing a long flowing cape, then we could talk about this.

But seriously, your obsession and infatuation with me is disturbing. I recommend you get some help.

You say this because you think I'm the only one who notices? You're far more delusional than you think, then. I think most of the people around here who pay half-attention know that you probably refer to your own organ as "Sony's Little Wonder."

In fact, whenever you come into this forum, you should just talk about that. That would make far more sense and actually incite some kind of entertainment. "I couldn't get Sony's Little Wonder sucked if I were armed with a vacuum cleaner."

Go play SMG, come back with your already-decided opinion that it sucks and everyone is wrong, and whine some more.

Drag some of your bitches in here if you want, to pretend like you've got a posse or some shit.

Of course, leave aside the issue that the reviewer considers pointer functionality to be the same as "motion sensing" (I tend to think of the shaking/moving motions as a separate capability from the IR pointing functions, but anyway).

But I'm not very far through the game, maybe 18 or so stars and I ran into one galaxy where I needed to use the pointer functionality for something beyond star bit gathering and shooting:
aiming a cannon and shooting Mario from it multiple times to collect a star
. And there is at least one level where you pretty much need to shoot the star bits (not just collect them).

Exactly. So much better than resting the controller on your crotch, although force feedback will never be the same.

Just beat it.

Wow.

Game of the Year. Best game on any system for the past 2 generations. And I've loved a lot of games on the GC/Xbox/PS2/360/Wii to this point.

58 stars left. Here we go! ;)

I'm super tempted to read on GameFAQs to see what unlocks at 120 stars. The in-game teaser is killing me.

It's
the ability to play as Luigi (He says "Super Luigi Galaxy! too) and regather all the stars again for another special thing. That special thing is apparently
another galaxy for the 121st star
and beyond that I have absolutely no idea.

Anyways, since I had 12 stars to go, I went ahead and wrapped it up. Took a bit to figure out how to get some Hidden Stars but I eventually got them all. I think there was a tiny bit extra tacked on to the after the credit roll when you re-beat the game once you get them all. I'll hold off on my second playthrough for a little while.

I'm behind but I finally picked up this game tonight. Pretty excited, since I wasn't expected to get it until the end of the month or X-Mas at the latest.

Hoping I can play a little bit tonight since I'll be out of town Friday-Sunday.
