Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: More POG games (disc-only used games sold for $9.99) sighted at stores week of Nov 9th
Many CAGs have reported finding new shipments of POG games (prepacked previously owned games) showing up on Nov 10th-12th. This is YMMV as many stores will not get them. But if they do, they are usually in clear cases, disc-only, and are priced at $9.99. Some notables include Call of Duty World at War, CoD Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Halo Wars, etc. It appears to be all 360 games this time. These are disc-only refurbs but are usually in excellent shape. Note that these all have the same barcode that rings up $9.99 - if you find the same games with regular cover art and specific bar codes for that used game, then they are not part of this POG stock and will be regular prices (generally way over $9.99 for the newer titles).

ALERT: B1G1 NOW OVER (but possibly returning in late November)
The latest Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale on games $14.99 has ended. The following list of $14.99 and under used games will be maintained for the next sale though. It seems highly likely from various reports that a B1G1 sale will be returning some time in late November. Some are even a decent buy without the B1G1 sale:

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

Cranium Kabooki still pulls in $16? At this point I'm certain someone in the trade-in dept. at Blockbuster knows about this thread and is keeping it at $16 as a joke.

Thanks....I may trade it in tomorrow and see what it gets. Got it for $6.50 essentially at Target.

went to put another $20 today on MW2 and the lady said i have to pay it off in full when i pick it up and cant put payments on it till then???????????

Maybe that's just to protect you from yourself, cause when they go bankrupt in September, you'll be S.O.L. ;)
They've always had the policy. Whatever the amount you first put down on a game is, that's what you're stuck with until it comes out.
Yeah, I seem to remember running into this before. I think I had them just cancel the whole thing, refund my credit, and then re-ring it with the full amount. Huge pain in the ass.

is this true?
is this true?
As in, for sure going out of business in september? lol no, of course it's not, it's a joke. But no one can say it CAN'T happen.

Didn't see this mentioned in the last 3 pages, but my local Blockbusters have all (it seemed like it) strategy guides ringing up at 50% off. I grabbed the gigantic Pokemon Platinum guide for $10 (sells for $25+ on Amazon). This was at both a BBGR and a non-GR BB.

The strat guides(most/all?) went to half off a little while ago, they haven't gone back up since. My store has MGS4 for like 10 bucks, the huge fallout one for 12.50, a pokemon one..some other random books. If I cared about fallout that might be a good price, but otherwise all we pretty much have are crappy books for prices I already pay for good books I actually want. Maybe some other stores still have some good ones though =/

Seems like my local BBV is moving locations. I noticed that they were building a new one next to the Walmart shopping center, didnt realize it was gonna replace my nearest BBV >_< Seems like the shipped out most of the stuff to their new location, but they do have a sale on various items. I cant believe people are falling for the dvd sales though, they're the usual preview dvds, 9.99, and 14.99, but they removed the 2/20 or 3/20 signs and instead give you 20% off. And people are walking up to the register with stacks in hand -_- At least games are 20% off as well, they made a good chunk of their rentals for sale, but about everything I wanted was bought up during B1G1. Might jump on some items such as RE5 if it drops past 30%

Has anyone looked into EB's newest $20 sale for decent transfers? I'd like to pick up a few rentals so I'll report back with whatever values I find.

No update yet Ryan? I ended up buying a used Madworld ($16.19 after Edge) on a whim thinking it might still be high at BBV. I do know that SF IV is $25 at Hollywood Video (didn't trade it, just asked while they price matched a Bionic Commando BBV trade-in price for me). It's really too bad the used copies aren't cheap as well on that one because that would be much easier, cheaper, and less hoardy ;).

I think BBV sells Wii Music pretty cheap used so I wouldn't expect much out of that. And DKJB is a $29.99 MSRP game and Excitebots is $39.99 so probably not much for those either. Hopefully there's something in there that is good and more readily available (and not in such high demand) than SF IV.

By the way, for those who use BBV receipts to price match for trade-in at HWV I think it just got more difficult. The computer would not let him adjust it beyond $22, which apparently is $10 over their regular trade-in price. He was trying to make it $26.25 (BBV price + 5%). He called someone and they said this is a new feature of the system. Since even he didn't even know about it and it isn't in the marketing materials (which guarantee trade-ins) he said he'd try to get me the extra credit somehow. What he ended up doing was giving me an $8.99 game that I was going to buy anyway for free (I think he just defected it). It was partly to make up for the reduced credit and partly to make up the time (took 30 minutes to do the trade). I was pretty happy with that, though it means more trouble matching BBV prices in the future.

OK, well, I can update I guess. It is pretty much meh...

Trade-in values for 7/28

Animal Crossing - $12
ExciteBots - $12
Madworld - $10 (boo, I guess I'm returning my GS copy)

:360:
FEAR 2 - $17
Street Fighter IV - $15

Yeah, not so great. I'm suprised FEAR 2 gets more and I only asked about it when I saw that SF IV is being sold for $34.99 while FEAR 2 is being sold for $39.99. Still, though, I have to wonder if they made yet another adjustment for the worse to their trade-in values. I thought $39.99 stuff usually got $19. There still might be a hidden gem or two but I'll let others ferret that out - I was pretty disheartened with some of those prices. By the way, Hollywood Video gives an astounding $2 for MadWorld .

I did notice a decent price on a random used game: FF Crystal Chronicles Echoes In Time is just $19.99. That there is a great candidate for a future B1G1 sale.

That sucks. I chose to skip out on flipping during the last BBV B1G1 sale, but now I'm regretting it. I have a little over $100 in GS credit, and it would be nice to be able to build that up again. I was hoping there would be some decent flips from GS to BBV, but I guess I'll have to wait for the next B1G1 sale to see what my GS to BBV options are...

My apologies on being late with the values - IO already hit the nail on the head.

One of these sales will eventually have a fair conversion. A lot the new titles are shorter and belong in the "rent" category. No need to spend $20 on one when you can rent and beat three for about as much.

I wouldn't mind transferring some credit over to BBV. Are there any qualifying games at Gamestop? I know Cranium and Tenchu for the Wii were the most recent candidates. Are these still good to go, and are there any others worth trading in to BBV?

Tenchu is a negative since it gets $10 now (maybe less).

I don't know if this is a new thing at all stores or YMMV, but I saw a shelf of books for sale at one Blockbuster, it was basically the top 10 bestseller list, hardbacks. So...I guess that's something else to blow credit on if you must, though any good CAG will probably wait for a paperback edition!

Whoever runs this company needs a headcheck. They keep trying to sell shit like laptops and books instead of properly running their video and game rentals/purchases. WTF.

=) It's just too bad no one wants to hear suggestions. The assistant manager at my store always gets told by the district manager "that's a directive", even though it's stupid and customers complain. I guess we don't like doing what customers want.

And yeah, about 2000 stores are carrying books now, every 4-6 weeks they'll be rotated(so they say) for fresh ones. Top 10 new york best sellers. So my store has two of the archos mini pcs, 20 something books and yet we have 3 infamous rental copies. That game is COMPLETELY checked out 100% of the time. If you want it, you better get it within an hour of it getting checked in. Or our one and only left 4 dead copy that was hard to get for over 6 months until someone finally kept it/lost it and bought it from us.

I'm a little jaded at constantly being told to sell sell sell when the things people want we don't get. Madden pre-orders...lol, when you pay in full you get a 5$ gift card. Considering the tax in florida is 6%, you barely pay under 60 bucks. In other states you'd be getting it right at 60 or slightly above. How can I push such a crappy deal for a game everyone will carry. Lol "pre-order so you definitely get a copy" what a crock.

Sorry, ranting =P

It doesn't seem like a smart business venture for a video rental company to sell books. Maybe I'm wrong in my thinking but people go to BBV to rent movies and other media, not to find reading material.

Well BBV is desperate and the execs are running out of ideas.

More crap we are going to sell. At least it's video related I guess. It's called a blockbuster 2wire set top box. It's a VOD box for $99 they are marketing as get 25 rentals for $99 and the box is free.

Also going to sell an external DVD drive to accompany the netbooks which r flying off the shelves. Haven't sold 1 in the district since we started selling it mabye a month ago.

And one last thing don't forget the chapstick on ur way out. Hello kitty chapstick is now available at ur local blockbuster. Wow this is one dumb company no wonder we are strugggling so much.

Finally might be a sign of things to come. We received new signage with 20% off games. Hopefully this isn't going to replace the b1g1. No word about any sale.

So it's not enough to compete against Netflix, Redbox and Gamestop. BBV just has to take on Borders and Barnes and Noble. The future is looking bright for BBV... not.

Here's the website:

http://www.blockbuster.com/download/ondemand

They need to either lower the price or give more pre-paid rentals up front. That site says on demand rentals start at $1.99, so I'm going to assume that new releases will probably be $3.99. So, at $99 for 25 rentals, that's $4 per movie (not including the "free" set top box cost). But if what I just outlined is true and the 25 movies you decide to watch aren't new releases, then the set top box isn't actually free. If you decided to watch 25 movies on demand that would normally be $2, that's only a $50 value.

I dunno, great concept, but I just don't see it really taking off, considering Netflix already does the same thing, does it better, and on more devices (Roku, Xbox 360, some Blu-ray players, etc. - and rumor is that Wii and iPhone will support it soon too). I guess it depends on whether people would prefer pay-per-view or subscription-based movie watching.

If BBV is going to get into this market, this seems like a pretty lame first attempt.

Such a sad, sad thread nowadays.

Hey, just a warning if anyone has Vanilla Visas left over. I forgot I had 2 of them along with a Sprite Visa debit card. The Sprite card (I think I got this using Coke rewards points though it may have been the one I won in their contest too) I couldn't check online - their site doesn't even seem to exist any more. I called in about it, though, and they told me the balance was $0 because of the monthly fees they start charging after a certain amount of time (bastards). I have no idea how much I lost there but I don't think it was much ($10 maybe).

The Vanilla visas you can still check online. On one card I had a post-it note that said that I had $19.69. I checked online and it was $14.69. That's because in the very fine print on the back it says after 7 months they start charging $2.50 per month. Again, bastards! It's not like they are printing and mailing you statements or anything - they got that damn $5.95 activation fee and that should be enough for them. In any case, I quickly just bought an Amazon gift card with the $14.69 I had left and sent it to my wife to pile on to her account. So that chapter is finally closed.

So yeah, just in case anyone still has one (or more) left, you better spend the rest quickly. I just remember I bought something big and then it always seemed like it would be inconvenient to use as I'd have to make sure it was less than what I had on it. So I just put it in a pile on my desk and forgot about it. I had another one that showed a balance of $0 but I remembered buying some small amount of postage stamps at the PO specifically to expend that one (and the transaction history showed that).

Anyway, this is yet another reason why I have no idea why anyone would ever buy one of these pos Visa debit cards with real money. You pay $5.95 activation and then they start taking the money away after just 7 months (while the card says it is good through July 2012). Had I remembered I had this during the B1G1 sale I could have saved some real cash . I did just find one of the $5 freebie gift cards (for buying $50 in BBV gift cards) in the bottom of a drawer. So at least I have that for the next sale...

I also found a $10 RZ certificate on my desk but that is still good through Sept. Too bad I never go to Best Buy any more, but I'll find some use for it. Maybe I'll actually buy a CD or something!

When my VV's were down to a few bucks, I used them at the gas station. Just pumped a little bit of gas, slowly, and cut the pump off right at the balance of the card (or once cent less to be safe). You did have to go inside to pay, couldn't pay at the pump, but that was a good way to specify exactly how much you wanted to spend, if you didn't want an Amazon card.

io, same thing happened to me. I had credit at one store, bought a VV used it at others and had $8 left over and lost it all to the fees when I did not use in like 8~10 months.

That's one of the good things about being in CA. There are no fees assesed to GC for inactivity. It evens out, though (imo) since we don't get tax added to TIV and we pay tax on "store credit" purchases.

I used the remaining balance on my VVs at BBV during their new game clearance. I just had the manager check the balance on each card and apply it to the total. It was a pita (for him) and he did give me a weird look after seeing my VVs but I didn't care since flipping at BBV is mostly dead.

I had 15 bucks from my new hdtv a few months ago in coupons, before they expired I just looked for 20$ and under games. Nothing much on the site, so I ordered a psn card.

Yeah, good reminder. I've definitely made it a habit to buy whatever I wanted from pre-paid cards (Vanilla Visas included) and empty the rest out via Amazon.com gift certificates (any amount over $5, IIRC). This method works especially well now because of Amazon's used game trade-in program :)

Yep, this is why I dumped it on Amazon - it just got added into the pile of trade credit I have there but now with that + the trade-in promo codes + ECA I'm actually starting to buy games from Amazon (never really did it much in the past).

I have even sent a couple of leftover BBV B1G1 games into Amazon ;).
X360 race pro is still $17 at Bbv. With coupon that expires today it wouldn't be a bad flip.
Are there anymore 1:1 flips from GS? I found a Macys that sells ipods and want to get more gift cards to buy one.

Also consider doing this through Amazon, since they now take trades. There are frequent 1:1 or better flips when the DOTD and coupons overlap.

Plus their prices are lower and (for most) there's no tax. It doesn't make a lot of sense to go the Macy's route, unless you want clothing.

I thought of it since I can get it now in hand and they're only about $10 more for most stuff plus returnability. But I'll check into amazon TIV's. Thanks

Do they actually guarantee copies now. When I used to preorder stuff (back in the trade 2 get a $30 preorder days), it seemed like it had no bearing on whether or not they actually got it. Some games I preordered and they never actually got them in, and they couldn't order me a copy for some reason, so I would have to transfer it to another game.

The VV's are technically not giftcards so the CA protection law doesn't work for them.

My last 2 VV's got hit with the charge for inactivity and they were bought in SoCal

Who fucking knows, and it's that kind of bullshit that has me angry about pushing pre-orders. One of our employees pre-ordered godfather II on ps3, surprise, never came in. Another employee ordered one of the wii GH bundles like a year-2 ago, never got it, and another title I can't remember. And these aren't because we ran out of copies giving to customers, they were games we never even received. And yes, for awhile now, an individual store has absolutely no ability to order anything other than to try and get a transfer from another store.
