Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.
I think the TIVs for both the PS3 and 360 versions are the same. Its not a bad game for $5. Though I already rented it and beat it.
It wasn't at Amazon this afternoon, but now they are both at $3.50. A few hours ago they were $9 for PS3 and $5 or so for 360.

I got a few PS3/360 "kids" games from this sale that I actually do plan on playing when I find the time. I need something relatively short and simple to play after I get done spending 105+ hours on FF XIII (where I am right now with many more to go to get the platinum).

But in addition to Where The Wild Things Are, I got Monsters vs Aliens and G-Force for PS3 and Madagascar 2 for 360 (since the PS3 version doesn't have trophy support - it was a nice flip to Amazon though ;)).

And of course I got a lot of Wii and DS games for the kiddies (and me). Like I said, my sons just got finished with a round of Toy Story Mania before bedtime. My oldest (10) wants to play it in the AM before he goes to school and he never wants to do that (he isn't allowed, but it's nice to see him appreciate one of the games I bring home for a change ;)).

By the way, to add to the "3 boys" discussion you guys were having earlier: mine are 10, 7, and 2. The 2 year-old isn't quite ready to play, though he was playing with my stack of Toy Story Manias and calling it "Buzz". Then he stepped on one of them . They got put away at that point.

Anyways, I guess I better remove the B1G1 from the thread title until we hear otherwise. I asked at a few stores today and they either confirmed it was the last day or had no idea. But that doesn't mean they won't get a notice to extend it tomorrow. Maybe the huge sales we generated today will convince them to keep it going!

One can only hope it is extended.and more price drops too.
It's tough when you are in the store and don't remember if something is a good deal or not. I should have known the 360 version would be worth less, but oh well, only a few dollars. all in all, this month has been insane. eastore.com, gamestop 40%, BBV B1G1. Thanx Cag for a wild April :) I'm not even disappointed there isn't any bestbuy freebies this month ;p
Peace
You forgot free Pepsi;)

I have a solution for that "out in the wild with no internet access" problem. I have someone look up my shit. During this sale, I had my "Oracle" type in games at gazelle all the time. I just called them up and had them do it. Saved me a big amount of trouble. I also have him check the pennie guide list and other threads when necessary.

I missed out on the EAstore but have found tons of cool shit at Walmart this month along with 2 kmart closings, 3 gamecrazie closings, and 2 blockbuster closings. So I am going mad with sales and my personal collection has gone up 20 games. Including one sealed ICO!!!!!, Steal Princess, Eternal Sonata, Beautiful Katamri, and so forth. All for the low price of maybe, $400 out of pocket. I'm leaving a bunch of shit out but trust me, its been a good month.

I picked up 3 copies of TSM, 1 KH 358/2 Days, 1 Tinkerbell and a Lego Rockband DS. I'll flip 2 of the TSM, KH and Tinkerbell. I could've picked up more TSM but I didn't want to use cash.

I'm surprised that I was still able to find KH since it was there on day one. The only Cars Race-o-rama that I found was disc only so I passed.

No way...where'd you score ico from?!

Really regret not checking out my BBV tonight, but I was extremely tired after a late night tennis game, and all I wanted was some Burger King and to get home. I'm going to the bank tomorrow and stopping by the BBV across the street, I really do hope that I find NOTHING or else I would regret it. Overall, the first days of the sale didnt hold much, and I really do doubt them restocking anything else that quickly, especially with this BBV

I was gonna go thru tru. ps3 is 9.00 and x360 is 4.50. but it's cool. My lil girls are 6, 7 n 9. They love games, but mostly just harvest moon and smash. Any game I give them they say is the best for a few hours. lol. also yeah, the managers I talked to said they mite extend the sale but most of their games stock was already used up, lol.

I managed to pick up 1x BRB Wii, 1x BRB 360, 1x TMNT Smashup and 1x Toy Story Mania. I had also picked out another BRB Wii and Dirt 2 Wii, but they could only find one BRB Wii, so I dropped Dirt 2. Also Toy Story Mania included the manual but was in a black case. I asked if they would give me a spare Wii case and they did. Nice! I should probably have bought more stuff, but resisted. Great sale!

Good thing you put them away in time. :) Kids can be hard on stuff. Although I have an old GameCube that I swear has been used as a soccer ball, stepping stool, foot rest, etc. by my kids. But every time that thing gets plugged in, it works fine. So I guess some stuff ends up being pretty durable.

my kids destroyed their gamecube. it still works but I dont know how. they fall asleep with that thing running on harvest moon and i was sure it was dead, but apparently it was just a controller malfunction(wire was fraying up and causing system to freeze/odd) and it's all good now. gamecubes are the workhorses of the console world.

Wow, I stopped flipping from BBV a while back and then this thread exploded. Was there any confirmation on when this sale ends, if it hasn't already ended?

It ended yesterday. Ouch.

I spoke with an employee yesterday, and he thought it was on for yet another week since he hadn't been informed otherwise. Will be calling in about 10 minutes to find out. Can't hurt to check.

I'd say it's the most modern workhorse of the console world. Some of the older consoles like the NES could take a beating. There was even that one Gameboy that still worked after it burnt in a fire.

I remember leaving my old Cube on for a whole day just so I could play as Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros.

I spoke with an employee yesterday, and he thought it was on for yet another week since he hadn't been informed otherwise. Will be calling in about 10 minutes to find out. Can't hurt to check.

it's over. If the employees actually took the time to read any of the communications updates they would know that. You know it takes about 1 minute to keep updated on things but I guess they are too busy selling these damn candy bundles.

C'mon, man, just give me one more week. One more week! That's all I need. I swear, I'll quit cold turkey after that. All I need is one more week, man. You got the good stuff and you gotta give it to me. I need it, man. I need it.

Found a BBV with Vanilla Visa Cards, and thought I hit the jackpot. Unfortunately the Manager said she can't sell them anymore, nor would they ring up in the register, and she said should be taken off the shelves. ..Too bad.

I bought a few candy bundles, when a bbv employee would make a point of helping me with what not.

Thanks Hawaiiboy and all others who helped out with info. Your posts were invaluable during the sale.

Yep, I confirmed with two stores. What's funny is that same employee tried hard to sell me one of those bundles with the candy/popcorn/drink.

I look at this as a case of the manager not doing his (or her) job correctly. Sure an employee should be keeping up with things. But it's the store manager's job to make sure their employees are up to date.

Yeah this was the first time I did a BBV deal other than FTF trade in. This was a great deal and hawaiiboy and io and cheapestgamer were all invaluable. Thank you so much for all the work and info you guys put into this site. Without cags like you there would be no CAG!
- n yeah the NES was insane. Looking back I remember always blowing it or sticking two cartridges in the hole at the same time. omg that sounds dirty. but then it always worked :)
- wow, even more nostalgic, i think iv always been a cag. my first game was a free dragon warrior when i was like 5 that came with nintendo power subscription ;)

Seeing as how employees don't get access to the communications updates unless they are a manager of sorts it totally falls down on the store manager to print the comm update and give it to the employees to read. Most SMs don't do that though...

Sucks for you guys who got harassed for the bundle. God damn BBV is going crazy with these things. I'm sick and tired of pushing them =/.

umm...u need to stop, we should call A&E, and have a CAG intervention for bingobrown

anyways, i talked to the local BBV employees, and they didnt know when this sale was going to end, (even tho i knew it ended yesterday), im guessing it wont because lots of prices on games that everyone has reported havent dropped in my area

I stopped into my local Blockbuster that I hit around 7pm last night and the prices were changed on the games that dropped yesterday. The main manager even offered to do the sale for me for some games since I 'heard it was supposed to have been extended'.

But as usual he tried grilling me on 'which employee did you hear it from'(so he could get them in deep crap, I guess), so I told him some way far outta state Blockbuster I was at over 5 years ago. He said nevermind after that, but still offered me the sale deal.

They still had about 6-8 copies of Toy Story Mania, the lone copy of Cars: Race-O-Rama, the disc only Beatles Rock Band and various other odds and ends for both 360 and Wii(nothing left for PS3).

I was tempted to grab some more TSM for flipping again, but since the charge from last night's transaction is still pending I didn't wanna push it.

I was dumb and got a bundle. I ended up getting an extra piece of candy and the whole total was like $7 something. lol. there goes my kill death ratio that day. wait wrong ratio...profit/loss?
I wish my store had that many toy stories. I would pick them all up. mix it w call of juarez n u get 40 cred at gamestop. i know u know that tho. I just tell my bbv's that I checked down the street at the other store, it's funny how we know price drops/sales before they occur. I love the inside info.

But the problem with telling them it was the store down the road is, someone there may get in trouble for saying something they DIDN'T say. That's why I always say 'it was some store in NJ my one buddy stopped at'.;):D

Not bad, but TSM is $30 $20 paypal credit alone at ebay.eztradein.com. Moreover you can mail in 10 TSM's at once, no problem with dupes, up to 10 at once, and get $300 $200 paypal credit in one fell swoop. I don't think there's any real issue with making multiple 10 copy trade-ins as well, though that isn't proven yet. Of course you have the hassle of mailing them in, and eztradein isn't entirely proven yet (but so far people seem to be having success), but $10 extra credit per copy, plus getting paypal instead of GS credit, plus going to 10 different GS's is a hassle of its own.

EDIT: sorry for the wrong-o information. Corrected now.

I took a chance and relied on my closest GS to honor their prior agreement with me that as long as I show them a receipt showing where I got the games and what I paid they're cool with trade-ins of multiples.

I just called a bit ago to double check and make sure and they still said the trade from yesterday was ok. I got rid of SIX at ONE store. It's YMMV as to whether or not your local GS will allow it, but you never know unless you ask.;)

And judging by the length of time the Best Buy credit is taking to get verified and sent to me, I wouldn't want the hassle of waiting this long or longer for Paypal(if I actually had an account, that is).

oh no, i just said I got lucky with the store down the road when i rang them up, etc. i dont name names. lol. they just get curious when i ask for b1g1 for 19.99 marked games, then when they see the price they are like, oh yeah i was lazy and gonna retag it later i guess you checked down the street, and im like. 'yeah' haha. on n yeah if i had 10 copies I would mail it in, i dont have that problem tho :) i only got 1 left and gonna do that and juarez 40 dealio.

Where are you seeing 30$ per copy, it shows 20 for me.

Nowhere. Misremembered that. Oh well, at least you can send in 10 copies at once and you get paypal credit. :)

true, communication between mgrs and csrs in general is bad. What I do in my store is the csr must do certain things before the start of their shift. One of them is read any updates and sign off on it so I know they read it.

Well then your a good manager. Too many managers don't understand that a sales associates success, or lack of, refects on that manager.

I offered to buy one of the candy bundles from one of my friends, but he said it helps and doesn't help. Essentially, the store has a quota to meet. If it isn't met, everyone is frowned upon (even if one CSR does awesome and everyone else doesn't sell anything). So, the bundle is kind of a wash if no one else is pushing it. Is that true?

Also, has anyone actually played Toy Story Mania? I have a 4 year old nephew who loves buzz lightyear and was wondering if it's worth keeping straight up.

Well, every store gets a weekly goal that corporate sets up. My store's goal is 80 bundles for the week. Then, our DMs decide that they want to one up that goal and bumped our store's goal to 125. It makes no sense, because corporate sets these goals based on our activity and how many people come to the store, but the DMs think they know better and just pull numbers out of their asses and if we don't hit 125, they flip. But yeah, in general, everyone has to sell or else we won't meet that goal. It sucks when some people just sit there and don't do anything because everyone has to pick up their slack, but that's why people get fired.

Yeah, I said last night that my boys played it. They seemed to enjoy it quite a bit and want to play it again today after school. They are 10 and 7.

I bought 2 or 3 of the candy bundles when I found particularly juicy stashes of B1G1 games. But for the most part I have not had them pushed on me that much at all. I only remember 2 or 3 times where they even asked me if I wanted to buy them.

My boys (ages 6 & 11) like it. Mostly the 6yo, though - the older one just plays because it's on. For $7.50+tax your nephew will get at least 10 hrs out of it - can't beat that.

See if you can find the 3D glasses to go with it. I asked at the BBV and they had a drawer full of 'em. Grabbed 4 pairs (up to 4 can play).

Picked up a few more Wii games yesterday (3RBB, 2TSM & 1GHM). Stopped in at my local BBV - and my most reliable CSR said the sale was extended again for sure - has anyone actually tried it today?

I will call in on the way home and check - but it will not be for another 6 hours.....

Phoning is usually useless - they just say no and don't even try....

the overall goal for the store is 7% bundles (only 3 of 16 stores met this mark)and we get a report each morning detailing how we are doing. It also breaks down each csr and what they have done. It's pretty simple in my store u sell u get hours.

Yeah, that's basically how it works at a lot of retail stores. There's a certain total of numbers for given things (like the warranties at GS or the PRPs at F.Y.E.) that corporate expects to be met before the end of the day. Those numbers are every employees' numbers combined, so if the quota is 10 and there are 5 employees, every employee is expected to get at least two. It's not necessarily a wash if nobody else is pushing their numbers, though. All the numbers a store gets places them in a ranking ranging from regional to nationwide in the chain. So one or two numbers could push them up significantly in the ranks, especially if everyone else in the chain is slacking off.

That said, I really hate the concept of pushing numbers. At places like Gamestop and BBV, it's not so bad since they'll only offer you one or two things tops, but at places like F.Y.E./Sam Goody (my work place, ironically) numbers are pushed to the point of customer dissatisfaction. Having to offer literally five different things, pushing the checkout process to two or three minutes after you know the customer doesn't want anything is bullshit. I know it pushes people to the point where they'll never come back, and in the end, was it worth trying to get 99 cents with the disk repair kit, corporate? I don't think so. It's sad that stores that put customer service first and getting numbers second are usually the ones that end up getting the boot by corporate.

So... To answer your question, the CSR who gets awesome numbers won't get in trouble with his/her manager because everyone else fell short, but corporate will frown on the entire store for not meeting the quota.

Continuing the off-topic discussion...

So is it fair to say that the biggest focus BBV has right now is selling candy bundles to movie renters? If so, that's unbelievable.

Being in a dozen BBVs the past few weeks has really given me some insight into their dying business model. Very few customers (at any time of the day), but the customers that are there seem to be "regulars." They know the BBV employees, and the employees suggest what movies to rent. That seems to be the only selling point BBV has over Netflix: human interaction.

Personally, if I rented movies (I borrow from the library for free), I can't imagine going with BBV over Netflix. But I guess that's why BBV is losing out to Netflix in the marketplace.

How long has this candy thing been going on? The first day of the sale I went to 4 stores, and then back to 2 of them each following Monday. And I never was offerred anything. A few of the employees kinda know me but still. I work at TRU & see the same people all the time. But you still gotta offer batteries and rewards and whatever.

I also purchased several candy bundles at BBV.....I guess it was my tax for some HARDCORE CAG'in.

That aside, I was never able to find a single copy of Mario Super Sluggers that could be "located" in the big black drawers of chance.

So, I'm disappointed the sale is over...

It was the opposite for me. For all the BBVs I went to these past 2 weeks, not one CSR pushed the candy bundle on me, yet they would ask the customer ahead of me and even the one behind me! It was borderline discrimination I tells ya!

Hmm.... Candy, Popcorn and drinks tend to go with movies. Hardcore gamers who are buying 10 games at a time don't have time for such nonsense. Besides - who wants to get cack all over their nice controller.

I would say this is positive discrimination.

I did succumb to the charms of the sexy CSR at my local though. She said she would be my BFF if I bought a bundle. I chose the Wonka everlasting gobstopper package - and I think it turned her on a little.....

:)

^^^LMAO

But yeah, I only got asked twice about the bundle. One time, i was actually kinda amused. The cashier was this girl and she was like "did you hear about our candy bundle we have right now. You can get a box of candy, a soda, and a pack or popcorn for $3." I said "That's a pretty good deal, but nah." Her: "it's better than a pretty good deal, it's the best!" Me: LOL.

But seriously, does it really bother you guys that much that they ask for it? It's not even like it's a bad deal, since the soda and candy are normally $1.25+ at most places. Plus the popcorn, for a movie... it makes sense!
