Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

Nothing really seems worth it to me with this glitch. I always figure my GS credit is roughly 50%+ anyway. And other clearance sales (Sears, Target, etc.) usually have better deals, too. I guess if I could somehow transfer credit from GS to BBV, but not enough benefit to make it worth it. I guess I'll wait and see if anyone reports back anything great.
This promo ad confuses me. It states buy one get the second 50% off. Yet the examples show "Less than $60...ORIGINAL RETAIL would have cost you $120".

The Less than $60, okay for the second at 50% would work without mentioning the full price purchase of the first. But the second can only be true if both are 50% off. Maybe not a glitch?

After thinking about it, I guess more trickery would be not $120 but like $90. So I'm wrong.
Original retail means $60 each, brand new. They are selling used games, so they are already discounted. Since GoW 3 and ME 2 both sell for $40 each used..and you get one for half off..it ends up being $60 total. Maybe it is a bit deceptive with the whole half off thing, but my CAG mind could never fall for such simple Jedi Mind Tricks.

Sadly, most people will.

Not sure about this, but isn't ME2 39.99 and ODST 29.99 in store? Making it right under 55 pre-tax?

I'm not sure why this confuses you, though. It looks like they arbitrarily picked a combo of games, used their current used game prices.

What trickery? They clearly note it's the original retail prices of these games (which they all were released at the 50 / 60 price range)

2nd store: got 3 $14.99 games (2x toy story mania, 1 beatles RB), all 50% off. 3rd store: 2x toy story, and GOW 3, all 50% off! Wheeeee
The glitch took 50% off for one of my games and the second was free:)
Nice, thinking about hitting some more BBV's to see if this glitch is still going around.

I got it now. The retail price and comparing it to the used price was what caught me. I read it as comparing used prices before sale or new prices before sale. Not comparing retail to used and also the sale. :headache:
Does everyone agree that they have to press total? If they don't then it won't be big deal to do a price check without having to cancel the sale.
Well, it seems to be YMMV. Hell, it was YMMV at the SAME store within 5 minutes on two different transactions for me.
Just went back a second time and the coupon has been removed from the system. Bummer !!
I'm wondering - yet others are reporting it working. But maybe they were out a bit earlier and just reporting "it works!" now but really they did it an hour ago or something.

I just got back and here's what happened:

Did a test purchase of two $14.99 games. The clerk is aware of the B1G1 50% off sale and enters something (a code perhaps) from a sheet as he rings them up. $7.50 comes off, making the total $22.48. OK, I figure it is fixed, or he has an override code to make it work like it is supposed to. But then he hits total and it comes out to $14.99! Score! I had done those two games because I would have gotten them at B1G1 50% off anyway and I didn't want to have to credit returns on the guy.

So, I figure it is working and get 6 more games, including stuff like God of War III. Well, this time, he enters his codes, and my total is like $107... CRAP - that wasn't anything close to 50% off all of them. Either the code changed in the 10 minutes between when I got that set and the first set, or he did something else manually to keep it from applying 50% on all of them. I felt horrible about this, but I had him remove 2 of the games including the $40 God of War III but I was still not getting much of a discount (because I had some $9.99 games in there). At this point, he was manually applying negative credits to make up for the games he removed. So I removed two MORE games, and ended up just getting two for the B1G1 50% off (since he added $15 or so in there to make up for the credit I got from the removed games).

Anyway, point is, the guy was too well aware of the sale (though not the glitch I don't think, at least not at first). So I ended up with one good deal (B1G1 - it was two $14.99 games so it was essentially like the sale of a few weeks ago) and one B1G1 50% off which was kind of a crappy deal. I can trade one of the latter games in for the amount it cost, though, meaning I'll get the second game for 50% off - just with more work than I would have liked... Oh well...

So, the question is, did it just happen to get fixed system wide right in between my two purchases or what? This would have been right around 12:15 Pacific.

By the way, there appears to have been several price drops I have not seen reported here yet.

:ps3: Beatles Rock Band - $14.99 (finally!)
:ps3: GT5 Prologue - $9.99
:ps3: Lego Rock Band - $14.99

and more but I was a bit rushed.

Hah - I'm thinking it got fixed just now. You East Coasters with 3 extra hours to get in on this were lucky. Most stores around here don't even open till 10 or 11 - so it was just an hour or two...

just went to a different blockbuster and they actually had 2 signs up that said buy 1 get 1 50% off and 2 signs that said b1g1 all preplayed games lol. And they were all telling me that all games are b1g1 so i got some more :)

So if I ask them to do a price check on two games, will the glitch show up or do I have to ring everything up to see if it applied or not?

I got Assassin's Creed II for $7.50 and Brutal Legend for $5. These were my test games to see if it works, and if so I was planning to come back for more later. It worked, but because of some mislabeling on Assassin's Creed II, it took two clerks messing with the register for 20 minutes to get the right total. Those guys are probably so sick of me that I don't think I'll be going back. Too bad because they have Mass Effect 2, God of War III, and some others that I want. But Assassin's Creed II for $7.50 is pretty good in itself.
you have to total it out
I was hoping I could say something like " I heard there was a sale going on, can you check and see if it rings up on these two games?" I just don't want to have to pretend like I'm buying some games and then get hassled if the deal doesn't ring up and I want to cancel the transaction.

Just went to two Blockbusters that had absolutely no good games. Debating on whether or not I should try some other stores since it seems like everyone is overriding the system.

Your best bet is to find two that you'd buy anyway at B1G1 50% off and see if it works. If you get 50% off both, then get more.
details
Purchased Wet and X-Men Origins Wolverine both for 360, both complete and in great shape. Total was $8.13 with tax, rang up weird, neither the clerk nor I could believe it. I think I got VERY lucky with the glitch like some others, YMMV.

Congrats to those that were able to get in on this. For once, being on the West Coast was a disadvantage (atleast for me). It would've been nice to pick up, God of War 3, Darksiders, Mass Effect 2 and Army of Two: 40th Day psp for $67.56+tax.

Atleast, the sale kept me from buying RDR at TRU ($25 gc). I wouldn't have been able to play it since my 360 is on the verge of dying but it won't rrod. I can only play XBLA games. If I play anything else, the screen pixelates and i'm unable to see anything. It's been like that since early April. : (

Back home now and this is what I ended up with:

Wii
MLB Power Pros 2008 $3.50
Bomberman Land $7.50
Dead Space Extraction $7.50
Punch-Out $12.50
Think Fast $5
World of Zoo $5

No More Heroes 2 $12.50
Big Brain Academy Wii Degree $5
Wii Music $5
Tasunoko Vs. Capcom $15
Incredible Hulk $3.50
Metal Slug Anthology $5
Dirt 2 $5
Guitar Hero Metallica $15
Battalion Wars II $3.50
Rabbids Go Hom $7.50
Mario Sonic WInter Olympic Games $8 (BB screw up when they rang it up)

360
Destroy Humans Path of Furon $7.50
Eternal Sonata $5
Star Ocean Last Hope $8 (BB Screw up when they rang it up)
Dirt 2 $8 (same as above)
Transformers Revenge of Fallen $3.50
Open Season $3.50
MLB 2k10 $25
Beautiful Katamari $3.50

It would be helpful if people who are getting this deal provided the time that they checked out (EST as standard). I was able to get the deal at 1:30PM EST, but then got turned down at 2:30PM EST. I'm curious if it's back on or people reporting success got in before they killed it like I did.
So is this still working?
It's the epitome of YMMV. If your store hasn't been visited by hopefuls to tip off the system, it might still work.. if not, you might be out of luck entirely or B1G50%.

Worked like a charm at two Denver locations (Colfax/Bellaire & Colfax/Ogden).

I check out between 2 and 2:20 at each....at the Ogden store, they had a BIGI50%off sign behind the counter, but I asked her to ring them through and see if it took 50% off, and it sure did! About 30 bucks for 80 BB credit? Sold.

Hope that helps someone.

One had the actual sale, the other had 50% off everything. Got Darksiders and Assassins's Creed 2 for $15/each. Not bad in my book, I think I'll go back the the %50 store because I didn't even look around that much since their games on sale were mixed in with the rentals.

EDIT: I got 50% off all at 3:30 then the actual sale at 4:30. The first store the manager gave me a funny look as I walked out so he prob knew something fishy was going on.
So why isnt this a true sale?
Because it was a glitch -- basically, instead of a real B1G50% off, each game was triggering the 50% without the presence of another game.

Manager said i made him feel like an nincompoop, haha. Just ring it up and see what happens......no they arent on sale.....well just try it.....nah, bc ill have to credit it, ok ill just buy them.........50% off each game totals........hence incompoop

Sweet, I'm in Colorado so I'll go check it out at a bit. Thanks.

It's a NO GO in Texas.

Tried just one game, BF:BC2. Rang up full price (she did hit total). I asked if all used games were 50% off. The girl hadn't heard anything about it, but she admitted they are sometimes late getting news about promotions. She called someone at another store (wasn't a manager), and they didn't know anything about the sale (either the glitch or the legitimate B1G1 50%) either.

4PM local time, so 5PM EST.

Got in on this deal at 430 EST time in Brookfield, WI. I picked up World at War(Wii) and Super Paper Mario for $18.37 total.

This morning I picked up(all for PS3):
-God of War III $20
-Batman Arkham Asylum $15
-Shellshock 2 $2.50
-Bayonetta $15
-Killzone 2 $10
-Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time $15
-World at War $10
-Avatar $10
-Beatles Rockband $7.50

^^^ 4:30 PM Eastern would be a full hour after I had it not work out here in the West... I'm also assuming your Bioshock 2 price of $2.50 was a typo? ;)

I think the way this works is there is a manual correction each store can do - not sure if it is by transaction or if they fix it once and for all. I say this because it got "fixed" in between my two transactions at a single store that were only 10 minutes apart.

The best situation is to find a store that has absolutely no idea there is any kind of sale and then just have them get rung up normally. If they think it is B1G1 50% they will either look in their coms and see how to fix it or just figure it out thenselves (manual override if nothing else). Very YMMV though...

I didn't try after 2:30 EST, but...

The glitch worked at 3 stores in NOVA that I visited, but with issues. I couldn't figure out (and maybe you guys did already) what exactly happens, but when you have more than 4 games, and possibly in odd denominations, the credit won't trigger for the more expensive ones. It worked fine with 2 and 4, though - got 50% off everything.

Here's a few highlights (aprox after discount)-

Scribblenauts - $10
Bowser Inside Story - $12.50
Mass Effect 2 - $20
Bayonetta - $15
Darksiders - $15
Mario & Sonic @ Winter (wii/ds)- $12.50/$10
Toy Story - $7.50
L4D2 - $15
Ass. Creed 2 - $15
Star Ocean - $10
Saint's Row 2 - $10/$3.50 (mistagged @ $6.99 on latter)
GH Smash Hits (360/Wii) - $7.50
Wet $7.50

And I also went into GS to buy Disgaea 3 but it was 29.99. I didn't realize the used prices are different in-store and online.

Picked up at Blockbuster in Irvine, CA:
Little Big Planet PSP $10
NBA 10 PSP $7.50
Toy Story Mania Wii X2 $7.50 ea

All rang up at 50% off. Cashier was confused, and had her DM on the phone.
The DM told her to let me have it. I told her to tell him "thank you".

Another visit to Tustin store was not quite as fruitful. Manager on duty, overrode everything.
Interestingly enough, he let me and my buddies know right when we walked in the store "Used games. Buy one, get one FREE." so:
WWE Smackdown v Raw 2010 marked at $30
Red Faction Guerrilla marked at $15

So, had he not overridden the glitch, I could have walked out with both for $22.50. As it was, he overrode the $15 off SvR, and manually added in an additional $7.50 discount for RFG! So, ended up with both for $30, which I think is still a really good deal.

As was stated earlier, this deal is the epitome of YMMV. I expect by this evening, it will be dead everywhere, as corporate will have caught on. It was a good example of how corporate made a huge mistake, and I had the good fortune of running into employees who were friendly, and in the interest of keeping a customer happy, made good on the deal.

Just came back from BB in Columbia 4:45PM EST. I brought a bunch of games up to the register and asked the guy to price check them. All came up at normal price, so I asked himto hit total, but he was hesitant because of the whole credi thing.

He asked the manager and she had to call the main office. Main office told her that the register would not automatically show the sale and that she had to enter a code to get B1G1 50% off. I put my copies of GOW 3 and Uncharted 2 back on the shelf and left. :(

You think maybe the system is still messed up so they are using a code in order to prevent people from getting 50% off on everything? Maybe I should go to another store and try to get the guy to hit total.

There's a blockbuster in brookfield still?

I thought they were all closed? was it the one on hwy 100?

Arg, well, crap - maybe that's it. My first transaction had 2 and my second 6. On the second one it only discounted the 3 cheapest ones.

This is so damn confusing - but I'm heading out to another store now and we'll see what happens. I'll make sure to keep it at 4 and under.

No go here at ~5pm, neither the 50% off nor B1G1 50% off was active automatically in the system. If there is a code, the employees at my store did not know about it (they even looked through a binder and evidently didn't see it.)

edit: For anyone who missed the "Location: NJ" under my name, this was in Northern NJ.
