The General 360 Owners/Buyers FAQ Thread (Updated 1/15/10)
Man, I had to manually input DNS and IP settings to get on Live.

My PS2 could logs on automatically.
You are doing it wrong. Use automatic settings unless you set up static IPs

Uh, I could only connect by manually adding them. Automatic failed the IP detection on router and direct modem connections.

It works now that I set everything up manually.

Hi guys, my 360 was being weird the other night, I started playing the new PoP, and within an hour I got an error message. The 360 had scratched the shit out of that game. Anyway, I was told it was a laser problem, maybe its dirty or something yadayada, and so I ordered a DVD laser cleaner. Just wondering if you guys thought this was the right course of action, my 360 was out of warranty so I didn't fancy ringing MS.

cheers guys

Is your 360 horzontal or vertical?

I got a 360 again, and I picked up Gears 2 because I know it's a good game for online play. I know there's the lag exploit but Epic is going to fix it. Microsoft won't let one of their biggest XBL cash cows have an exploit like that for long.

The thing is, I want to know what the best games to play on Live are so I can get them. This is the list so far:
1) Halo 3
2) Tales of Vesperia (Co-op RPG, I love RPG's and I heard this one's good)
3) *Future* Resident Evil 5

Other than that, I don't know.
Left 4 Dead - I have it on PC. Mass Effect - Beat it on PC/Have it on PC. Bioshock - Can get on PC. UT3 - Not a fan of arcade style FPS's and even if I was, I'd get it on PC.

How is Grand Theft Auto 4 online? I'm also going to get - Lost Odyssey and maybe Street Fighter 4.

I shut off my 360 the other day using the power button on the console itself. Noted it making noise still a few hours later and it seemed the fan was still running, yet the system was off. Odd.

Were you background downloading something?

My cousins haven't done the xbox update cause they dont have internet till next week. Can i have them bring just the hard drive and update it from my xbox?

Big RPG fan and was really dissapointed with LO, I wouldn't get it.

Best value is:

RB 1/2 (best local multiplayer game EVAR)
CoD 4 (dirt cheap now and will keep you busy forever)

Just those two will keep you busy for awhile. Get the whole RB bundle, its well worth it

I've been having trouble with what I thought was my disc tray(Ben Q) gears jamming/sticking for the last 3-4 months which it slowly got worse and worse to the point of not opening in 10-20 straight tries.

Yesterday I checked You Tube for info or solutions hoping someone might have a fix for it. After watching a few vids I found others who had the same problem and a fix. It turned out to be the rubberband that turns the gear was dirty and slipping, not jam:

I did everything as described above but I flipped the rubberband inside out and reinstalled it. It has worked perfectly since. I'm so glad. I had been doing research on replacing the drive only to find out I can buy a new one from Ebay for $40 but that the unit would need to be flashed by an authorized 360 repair business.
Well I got a new dog a few months back and he chewed up my headset yesterday. I had just the generic 360 one, nothing special.

Any suggestions on getting another one? I don't want to spend $100 on a headset, because I don't play that much. However I would like to hear some suggestions.
My cat chewed on and killed a week old headset once. I was so pissed.

Try Ebay, they usually have 3rd party version for $6-8 shipped.

LO has no MP, and once you beat it, there isn't really a reason to go back through and play it. However, it's a great game, one that you should eventually play.

Anyone know how you can auto-connect to live, for some reason with replaced system doesn't do it anymore?!

Mine still does it. I think you have to go into your profile settings to enable it.

Where though, I've looked in my edit profile and my system settings, even my manage account?

Thanks a ton, stupid NXE, I forgot all about the guide button!:applause:

COD4 is still the best FPS imo, and has more replay value than most multiplayer console games ever. COD5 is good too but I personally don't care for it, and COD4 is still much better.

Tales of Vesperia is not a "co-op" RPG fyi. It is an awesome RPG but not co-op.

Having a hell of a time trying to download the Burnout Paradise update...it keeps failing for no reason. Worst part is that I can download a bunch of different other stuff, but that particular patch keeps failing...

Tried cache clearing, direct connection bypassing my modem, port forwarding...and it always fails at 36, 41, or 46%.

Anyone else ever have an issue like this?

Actually I'm pretty sure you can have up to 4 players locally, the other 3 players control the other characters during battles.

Yeah that should work just fine.

Yea now that you mention it I did receive that error message as well and I was kind of put off by it. Considering I got it when I had to re-download a pinball table for Pinball FX, since the table got corrupt somehow (redownloaded the tables since I had a new system but that seemed to mess it up), and it said that it couldn't download it moving on to the next que in my downloads. However when I played the game, the table is on the hard drive and works fine so I just thought it was a fluke.

MP
CoD 4
CoD WatW
Halo 3
Left 4 Dead (only if you have a lot of friends who play it, otherwise don't do it.)

Hybrid
The Orange Box ($20 new for 5 games, TF2 has gotten zero updates on 360 and doesn't see a whole lot of play, but is still a fun game if you have friends to play with. The single player stuff is awesome in its own right.)
Castle Crashers ($15, actually works online now after the patch.)

Single Player
Mass Effect ($20 new now with the DLC included)
Tales of Vesperia
Lost Odyssey
Fallout 3
Oblivion
Eternal Sonata
Fable II (beware this is the shortest of all the RPG's I listed.)

This is correct. Player 1 controls movement on the map, but up to 4 players can play locally in the battles.

Hmm...not exactly what I'm talking about...the download never finishes for me, and Burnout Paradise keeps prompting me to update, saying I can't play online without the patch.

are you connected to live via wireless network?
Left 4 Dead (only if you have a lot of friends who play it, otherwise don't do it.)
Even without friends, you can jump into online games and play with random people. Nothin' wrong with that...except when dealing with exploiters or 9-year olds.

COD 4 is one of the best MP games ever...I just got back into it and started the addiction all over.

And I really enjoy GTA 4 online - races, car jack city, and TDM are all extremely fun.

agreed - cod4 is the best multiplayer game i've experienced on the 360. go for waw if you think you need more of a cod fix, but cod4 is still the best.

Loved the COD4 single player, but once I started playing the multiplayer, I'm hooked, and unlike Halo3, I don't feel like I'm really horrible at the game. so definitley get this game.

So now I'm considering getting COD WAW, but I keep seeing reviews that it's not as good as COD4, I don't have anything against WWII games, I like the genre. Is it really inferior to COD4?
GTA4 online is awful. Get Rock Band 2 for a great multiplayer experience
I disagree, I found GTA4 online to be excellent, especially if your into sandboxing with 15 others players.

I saw like 3 people post Left 4 Dead, he already said he had Left 4 Dead, and on the PC.. so he's already got the best version. And if you get TF2, get it on the PC, the 360 version is a joke and almost dead, PC version is still going VERY strong, and is still seeing updates regularly, unlike the 360 (Thanks Microsoft). Plus it's locked at 16 players while the PC version can do 32 players.

When I plug in my iPod or iPhone and choose "Select Music" from the blade menu, only the hard drive shows up.

I tried deleting and re-downloading the ipod support but still no luck. Anyone else having or have heard of this problem?
It's the first generation video iPod. I've used it before. It's been a while since I've done it but it was definitely before the XBE update.
Make sure you have disk mode on on the ipod if it has it.
are you connected to live via wireless network?
No. Wired. I've tried it both directly connected to my cable modem and via my router. Done all the cache clearing, port forwarding, everything. Still can't get it.

Hey guys what's up?

After a few months saving some money, I finally plan to get a Xbox 360 Premium this month! However, I'll only be able to play at my living room, without Internet connection at least until I buy a Wireless Router and possibly a Wireless Internet thingy for the 360, unless I can get a way to make the router look nice in the room :p.

Anyway, with that in mind, I also have a budget to buy a few games, mostly used (I live in Brazil, so a new game here costs around US$ 97,00...). What 3 games would you recommend as must haves with a solid singleplayer experience at least until I can get live?

I was thinking of:

1- Fallout 3: the reason I wanted a 360 in the first place!
2- Mass Effect: I've been wanting to get this one for a while also
3- Forza Motorspot 2 OR Burnout Paradise: But probably Forza, I'm more of a simulation type of guy.

So, any ideas? Remember, these games need to last me at least 2 months, without online. Now, no Oblivion please, I've played Morrowind and it never clicked with me. Thank you in advance!

What other genres do you like? I'm not a fan of racing games so I can't recommend any of those, but here are a few other RPGs that took me a long time to beat.

Lost Odyssey - turn-based JRPG. Should take a long time to beat.
Tales of Vesperia - fast paced combat JRPG. I put in over 100 hours on this one.
Enchanted Arms - turn-based JRPG. Got mixed reviews, but I enjoyed the battle system even if the story sucked. It's a lengthy game as well, and since it's older you should be able to find it at a low price.
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection - has a ton of genesis games at a low price
