The Official PS3 System Update Thread - 3.10 Available Now

2.43 is back up. I was playing LBP, and it was saying that it couldn't send my scores, then I tried playing Home, and it wouldn't let me sign in, so I just went to update, and there it was. It still showed that I was signed in (I could see who was online/offline), and didn't show the "A system update is available," like it normally does.

PS3 (v2.50) update

Now on to the PS3 v2.50 update. The latest features/enhancements include:
 • Support for the PS3 Official Bluetooth Headset - we’ve told you about the upcoming Bluetooth Headset and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Bundle on the Blog. This latest firmware installment enables High-Quality (HQ) mode, which delivers clear and wide-band online voice chat. On top of that, an added on-screen indicator shows battery status, volume level and use of HQ mode.
 • PlayStation Trophies interface enhancements - I know that many of you are busy collecting trophies and raising your PlayStation Trophy level. This update makes sharing and comparing your trophies with your friends even easier. On 1st part of the profile page you’ll see a symbol under level that represents level and the actual percentage towards the next level along with the existing level meter. The level symbol carries over to the trophy comparison screen where you will now be able to see your level, your friend’s level and the percentage towards the next level for both users along with all of the game by game comparison information you see today.
 • Friend status – Offline friends on your Friends list will have information below their avatars that will indicate how long it has been since they were last online.
 • Video – This update adds the Scene Search feature similar to the feature on the PSP. Activating this feature while viewing a video on the PS3 will break the video up into scenes that you can quickly access by pressing the X button. You can break the videos into one, two or five minute intervals. In addition, you can now choose to have all of the videos under the video section of the XMB play in sequence. Go to Settings then Video Settings to turn this option on.
 • PlayStation Store – We’ve added a redeem codes option right on the store to make it easier to redeem your PlayStation Network Cards and promotion codes. In addition, PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned.
 • Power Save Settings – You can now set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity. Go to Settings then Power Save Settings to turn on these features.
 • Background Downloading - You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed.
 • In-game Screenshots - this tool will allow everyone to capture, share and in other words, immortalize their favorite gameplay moments. This will be supported on a game by game basis. Please check back to find out which games will support this feature.
 • In addition to all of the features above there are some additional features and enhancements included in 2.50. Once the update launches, you can read all of the details here.
The support for the Bluetooth Headset will be of particular interest to all of you SOCOM fans. With the “Proximity Chat” feature, SOCOM: Confrontation gameplay is intensified as it allows you to experience high-quality voice playback in full surround sound. Whether the action is near or far, Proximity Chat clearly matches distance to sound effects and voiceovers within the game, putting you in the heart of the action.

Sounds good. :D

The only things left I want added are the last games you've played and official website integration.
Friend status – Offline friends on your Friends list will have information below their avatars that will indicate how long it has been since they were last online.
Good news.
Video – This update adds the Scene Search feature similar to the feature on the PSP. Activating this feature while viewing a video on the PS3 will break the video up into scenes that you can quickly access by pressing the X button. You can break the videos into one, two or five minute intervals. In addition, you can now choose to have all of the videos under the video section of the XMB play in sequence. So a playlist thing or just having videos in sequential order under the video tab playing without interruption?
PlayStation Store – We’ve added a redeem codes option right on the store to make it easier to redeem your PlayStation Network Cards and promotion codes. In addition, PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned.
Good news.
Power Save Settings – You can now set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity. Go to Settings then Power Save Settings to turn on these features.
Finally.
Background Downloading - You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed.
Good news for those that can use it, but it's not really something I really needed. The next thing that's left to add is being able to finish those downloads with the system powered down like the 360 does.
In-game Screenshots - this tool will allow everyone to capture, share and in other words, immortalize their favorite gameplay moments. This will be supported on a game by game basis. Please check back to find out which games will support this feature.
It's too bad that this won't be system wide, but this is a great feature for me.
In addition to all of the features above there are some additional features and enhancements included in 2.50. Once the update launches, you can read all of the details here.
Looking forward to see what else is in this update, but it's a great update. Should be nearly as good as getting trophies and in-game XMB with 2.40.
The only things left I want added are the last games you've played and official website integration.
My personal thinking is there will be a website integration, but it will have two issues:
-It will probably never display what games you played. If anything, it will be like play fire trophies tracking all the trophies you got.
-I don't think it will be real time, when you have to manually click the update button to synch trophies with online profile (kind of like on the PS3 XMB). I think it MIGHT me some sort of tech the PS3 lacks (something not put into it at the beginning), but not really sure.

Still, I'd be happy with that method.
I'm in suspense to know if this fixes The Headset Issues or if that's going to cost me $50.
I think it will be a stealth update (if it comes).

Gamercards aren't updated in real time either, so that's not a big deal.

Do you get The Headset Issue with multiple games, or just with GTA4?
Do you get The Headset Issue with multiple games, or just with GTA4?
Warhawk has issues as well, although they're slightly different than in GTA. It still takes a reboot to fix the problem if it occurs, though.

Web Integration for Friends Lists/Messaging/Trophy Displaying is probably the last great leap for them, but I expect it. Although I don't know how good it'll be.

i still cant figure out why i cant play my own custom soundtrack on wipeout hd. im uploading the songs into mp3 format but i still get the "this game doesnt support this music" or whatever it says. anyone else having this problem?

Frisky, technically the 360 doesn't power all the way down, it just shuts off the video outputs and other unnecessary stuff as it downloads. So the PS3 having shut off after downloads complete is pretty much the same thing. In fact, functionality-wise, the two features are the same.

Sony is still in the process of doing site overhauls. The Resistance 2 site will get an overhaul to coincide with the beta. The SOCOM site is getting a change too, one of the big changes is that everything is handled now via the PSN login, not the PS Underground login. Since Sony doesn't do this much, they're still unifying the whole thing so it'll happen eventually. The only problem is, will that happen before the PS4 comes out? :p

Great for those who actually have a headset and want this, but meh for me.
When they implemented trophies, I just went meh on this too. I don't care about 'achievements', which is what trophies really is a COPY of.
Do I really care how long my friends on PSN have been offline for? Not really.
 • PlayStation Store – We’ve added a redeem codes option right on the store to make it easier to redeem your PlayStation Network Cards and promotion codes. In addition, PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned. I already figured out how to add the funds to my wallet for the PSN store, this is another MEH for me.
 • Power Save Settings – You can now set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity. Go to Settings then Power Save Settings to turn on these features. I already shut off my controller manually from the shutdown menu, then manually press the reset button to shut the system down. Another MEH.
 • Background Downloading - You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed. Usually once I'm done downloading(like these ridiculous MANDATORY updates), I want to go and play a game, not shut the system down. Yet another MEH for me.
 • In-game Screenshots - this tool will allow everyone to capture, share and in other words, immortalize their favorite gameplay moments. This will be supported on a game by game basis. Please check back to find out which games will support this feature. This is about the ONLY thing I might want to use, since some of the explosions in Mercenaries 2 are pretty impressive and I'd like to make one of them my wallpaper on my PS3.

Aside from the in game screenshots, this current update is going to be a big bag of MEH for me, since I already shut down my controller manually before shutting down my PS3 and the rest just don't really matter to me.

I wish Sony would make this shitty update OPTIONAL, like the one I accidentally downloaded that was ONLY for Japan.

What I WISH they could add in an update is the ability to open a web browser window while IN a game, so if you're stuck on a level on a game and don't wanna search for the guide you may have, you can surf to Gamefaqs and find the solution while IN the game.

I'm sensing a Negativo vibe-o here

Isn't that what a computer is for?

This update is pretty good from what I see. I don't know why people are complaining.
I'm sensing a Negativo vibe-o here
Most of this update is garbage, unless you're some achieveme....errrr....'trophy' whore who sits there and either replays the same game 10 times to get all of the ridiculous trophies for 'bragging rights' or too fuckin' lazy to select the 'turn off controller' option before manually powering down the PS3 via the reset button.

Don't get me wrong, having the controller shut off automatically is a good thing, but I already shut mine down manually, so I don't need this portion of the update AT ALL.

However, I know that the web browser window while in a game thing would never be possible, since the PS3 has a severe memory problem from what I remember reading about it before I bought mine. As for opening a web page from my computer, it's a pain in the ass to go downstairs where the computer is just to look crap up, since my PS3 is UPstairs.

What update list are you reading that is mostly trophy stuff? That's maybe 1/8th of the update and it's nothing big at all, so I'm not sure why you're bitching about it.

I hope cross-game invites are still on the "to do" list, as well.

I'm only really happy about the power options for the controller. I owned a 360 first and just recently got a PS3(which I love) and I couldn't believe that the controller doesn't turn itself off after a few minutes to save battery. I never think of turning it off.

I know it's not mostly trophy stuff, but everything on there is MEH aside from the in game screenshots thing and even that is something I'd use ONCE or twice maybe and be bored with in short order.

I mean, I know the controller and system thing is a BIG thing for some, but for me I've been doing the shutdown manually for a while now so it's a useless pos part of the update.

It just seems like Sony is adding crap functionality and skipping over the actually useful stuff(like in game web browsing). Plus, it seems like they're copying alot of the newer functions they're adding to the system from Microsoft's 360. It's like they're playing catch up.

No shit they're playing catch up, they had to.

And really, just about every large missing feature is here now. The system is totally different than that on launch day. Which is when I got mine.

These smaller updates are easy to resolve than more complicated things like what you mean, so I'm glad they put them out quickly rather than hold them back.

I mean, I like added functionality and all, but most of what they've given us so far since I bought my system in April has been stuff I rarely use(aside from in-game XMB).

I guess you better not buy this update, eh?

I think an in-game browser would be a lot more useless than something like... turning the controller off. I have to recharge my batteries pretty often on the PS3 compared to the 360 because of the lack of that feature.

But maybe we will all win and they will add a in-game browser eventually, no reason to discredit other enhancements that Sony makes in the mean time.

I'm amazed when people complain about these updates.
Sure we want other things too, but discrediting these actually quite useful updates is silly.

To you they're meh, but saying none of this is useful stuff is just incorrect. A lot of the update is cutting down the steps you need to do this stuff, like the video playlist update, friends list update, code redeem option in the PS Store, power save settings, and background downloading updates. I imagine that you're a bit more anal than others when it comes to turning off the system and the controllers, as I imagine most shut them off with the PS button, if at all. Having to wait around that last download to shut it off can be averted by just setting it to shut down automatically, same with having the controller shut off automatically if it's been idle for a few minutes.

The browser is such a memory-intensive application that there's no way they'll be able to let you open a browser and play a game at the same time for a long time. If you know you're going to need an FAQ when playing a game, why not print one out first and save yourself the time of bringing up the browser over and over again to read what to do next?

They do have to play catch up in some areas, while others Microsoft needs to play catch up with Sony. Anything that makes the system easier for most everybody is a great thing and should be encouraged whenever possible.

You DO know they have the option to manually shut off the controller, which takes all of 4 seconds or so to do, right? It's second nature to me now to do that before shutting down the PS3.

I still wish they would allow for selective updating, so I could pick and choose what kind of functions I personally want, instead of grouping me in with everybody else.

If Sony had actually put in a good amount of memory and optimized the system to use it right, they might be able to do the in game browser right now.

Where does MS have to play catch up to Sony though? They have a system which has a pretty reliable online service, which you unfortunately have to pay for and the system plays games. To me, that's all that is required, since I guess I'm one of the few people who bought a PS3 only to play games on and offline and maybe web surf with it once in a while.

Don't the controllers shut off automatically when you turn off the PS3? Why would you have to turn them off manually right before you turn off the system?

I'm assuming everyone else rejoicing over this feature uses folding@home or something.

I do when I'm done, but sometimes I'm also doing other things and turning it off is less of a concern, so this would definitely help a lot. You can't argue that this is a useful thing for many people out there.
I still wish they would allow for selective updating, so I could pick and choose what kind of functions I personally want, instead of grouping me in with everybody else.
Is it really that much of a pain in the ass to not use this stuff when you update? Just because it's there, it doesn't mean that you're forced to use it.
If Sony had actually put in a good amount of memory and optimized the system to use it right, they might be able to do the in game browser right now.
Maybe, but I'm sure in-game browsing wasn't much of a high priority idea when coming up with the specs they'd need for features they wanted the PS3 to have.

In-game XMB-style functionality to let you have instant access to the dashboard itself while playing a game without having to quit to the dashboard first. The new dashboard's got something like this, so it won't be much of a big deal for much longer, though I'd add the use of the Xbox button to bring up the dashboard while watching movies or listening to music, which I use to delete or tidy up my video or music tabs when they get cluttered. The ability to have the system stay on the dashboard when you put a disc into the system and not have it start up the game, regardless of whether you're playing an XBLA or doing something else that's important to you. The ability to eject a disc from the dashboard or with the blade that pops up by pressing the Xbox button. The ability to easily switch between displays in the dashboard without needing to shut off the system. Is there a way to switch controllers without shutting them off first? Again, those may not be very important to you, but they are fairly big things that one does that the other doesn't do and I'd love to be able to switch between the two systems and not have to be reminded that I can't do something on one system that I can on the other system.
I can't believe you surf online with the PS3.
It's useful for downloading videos, podcasts, and stuff like that. I can't see anyone really using it like they would on a PC or laptop.

I dig the "turn off PS3 after download" feature. And, obviously, support for the official PS3 bluetooth headset is going to come in handy with Confrontation.

Now if we can have trophies on PSP. We would have to replay the games most likely but I can see getting trophies for future PSP games like Loco Roco 2 and Patapon 2. :whistle2:k
I can't believe you surf online with the PS3.
I've actually been using the web browser to find some images to use as my wallpaper on the PS3, since the ordinary one and the ones available in the store for free are kind of bleh.

Like right now, I currently have a screen capture of Robin Meade as my desktop/wallpaper.

Either way, I always said I'd NEVER use the web browser or online features, since I would never get into any of that. So, I'm sure in time my opinion on this stuff might change, since I never even envisioned myself downloading a game from the store.
