I had some issues with downloading 2.42.

- It seemed to go ok. Apparently the screen went black during download (my wife said that, I was in the other room).
- I went to go to the PS-Store and it lokced up my system, had to turn on/off with the back switch
- Internet Browser locked up on me twice....I was just looking for some random stuff quickly.

I don't know, all these issues are making me think that either there were problems with the network downloads or hardware issues. Both of which were the downfall of my old PS3 (along with F@H I suspect). Why I USUALLY try to wait for them to put the update on the site before I download, but I have a refurb so it has been silky smooth which makes me think it is hardware failure going on for others.

I seem to download these firmware updates before people start to report problems, thankfully every firmware update so far hasn't caused me any problems at all. Even 2.40 worked without any problems.

80 gig MGS4 bundle by the way.

I have not had any problems with downloading and installing updates, but although now with 2.42 I am have issues with my BT headset, stopping after a match or two in the same game it does not seem to matter what game it is, whether it GTA 4, MGO, or Warhawk.

Yeah, I let it install, set it to automatically turn off. Things seem to be working fine, but I did run into that folding at home problem. If it always does that I don't see myself doing it anymore. It was a good thing to do when I had the PS3 downloading demos.

I had an issue with the last update, I used the auto install through the PS network, and had no problems with the update itself. But after I put in a blueray disc/game and played it one time, shut the system down, and came back to that disc, it will not play it again. But, like when the old PSONE discs would stop being able to be read, you take another game disk, start it up and get it to read, and then eject it and the system will read any of your discs again. But next time you turn the system on, it won't read any of the discs you used so far since the update, so you have to grab another disc to start the system up again. This makes it seem like the update had something to do with stopping people from using copied discs in their systems. All of my discs are store bought originals, so Sony's update went awry. I did not see anyone with the 40GB spiderman blueray disk bundle respond, which is what I have, and which is the setup that Sony told me was the one that had all the problems.

I have the same issue with my USB headset...after a few matches all headsets cut out. It's especially bad with GTA4, but I've had headset issues on Haze, Burnout, and UT3 since the FW update.
seems that FW 2.5 has screen grabbing...
Does it really? I saw some website that was making up "dream updates" and that was one of the items on there.

This site is the source for the rumor.

CVG is reputable, however, they've pulled news blurbs from sites that aren't as reputable, so take everything with a grain of salt.

As per the PS3fanboy article on the same topic, the functionality is already available on a developer basis. Much like how you could take photos in MGS4 and save them to your hard drive. All this seems to do is make it standard across the firmware and SDK.

However, I suspect it'll still be up to developer to implement it since it'll likely use some resources while taking the screenshot, much like how youtube recording support is up to developers.

anyone figure out how to play external .srt subtitles on .avi files or what not? Searched the thread and last post was from me on pg. 41 lol, so any help?

You have to inject the subtitle file into the AVI. Luckily this isn't reencoding or touching the video stream at all so it takes a couple of seconds instead of an hour or two.

I use this.

You'll end up with a .DIVX file but the PS3 recognizes those natively, I guess you could also try renaming it to AVI again and it'd probably work too.

Weird. I cant access any "Profiles", compare trophies with anyone or get in the store. The website says network is good. Hopefully this is something coming..

Did you upgrade your HDD? I heard some people have/had issues with trpphies with a new HDD...not sure why though.

OK....does anyone know wtfh update 2.43 does? I mean, I don't see anything different with the XMB or anything. Maybe Sony was nice and added full software BC for PS2 games with this update? Not that I'd ever use it that much, but still, it would be a far more useful update than in-game XMB functionality.

It does nothing, only for Japan users, although it doesnt matter if u dl it. Dont ask me why its available for us though. Im not downloading it.

I don't think Sony has region-specific firmware, which is why even though this is targeted for the Japanese, anybody else can download it if they wish to do so.

From the second page of comments.
To quote the Japanese PlayStation site:
日本地域のPLAYSTATION®Storeで、レンタル方式のコンテンツダウンロードに対応するための機能を追加しました。9月24日(水)よ り、アニメ作品をはじめ、ゲームユーザーの皆様にお楽しみいただける厳選されたハイクオリティなタイトルを、期間限定で視聴可能なレンタル方式でダウン ロードできるようになります。
Rough translation:
Functionality was added on the Japanese Playstation Store to support the download of rental contents. From Wednesday, September 24, it will be possible to download carefully selected high-quality titles such as Anime which all game users can enjoy, in a rental format that makes them viewable for a limited time.
– this is the only functionality it says has been added.

So it looks like it could have functionality for people with Japanese PSN accounts if they want to rent stuff.
LOL, i just realized we had one a week ago.
I knew that for a while, but just like the downloadable games (over $5 ), they'll be waiting a loooooooong time for me to rent something I don't have possession of a physical copy of.
Is there a Japanese PSN video store or is this just getting them ready for that?
That's my guess. The Japanese rental store is coming soon.

OK. So it's been confirmed that FW 2.43 was NOT for us, huh? Well, that's 20 minutes or so of my life I'll never get back. Thanks for the disclaimer, Sony.

Of course, I haven't even turned on my PS3 yet for today, so here's to hoping that those not in the region 2.43 was for who downloaded it still HAVE a PS3 to turn on as of today.
That was confirmed from the beginning.
I just check for updates, so I stay current and don't have any 'surprise' updates like 2.42, which stopped me from being able to go online to play a game until I was forcibly updated to the newest FW. That's about the only thing that I hate about the PS3 update process, is that when there's a mandatory FW update, you can't do anything the fuck else until that damn thing downloads and installs.:bomb:

At least on my wireless connection I can't.
