Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Weekend Deal is Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines for 5$.

This is kind of like the white whale of deals, right?

People have been waiting for this one for like a year and a half.
You've got to be fucking kidding me. I feel bad both about paying 13.50 and telling people that it would never be on sale again.
Think of it this way: you paid more because you love the game and in return, gave them more money to help fund their next great game. =] It makes it a lot less painful. =]

I think Troika went out of business after this game was released.

Then he gave them money to feed their children!

I just spent time reading the Steam forums about VtMB and patches and Win7 64-bit compatibility and tigers and bears and pandas on a crackergoodgosh! I wonder if it's worth the hassle to even buy the game anymore since I have a fairly new system.

Thoughts?

I'm so excited for this weekend deal. This game hasn't been this low on steam since 2008 and only this cheap one other time on D2D. I'm so glad I passed on it during the steam sale.

Patching the game is literally a drag-and-drop process.

Exactly! Oh well still an awesome game.
If you don't buy it at 5 bucks you are a fucking moron.

I'm hearing a lot of positive thoughts on Vampire, but nobody is telling me why. Can someone give me a reason why people are creaming themselves so much about an 80 metacritic game? I hate to sound so cynical, but as someone who'd never heard of this game until recently, I'm just a tad confused.

Okay, thanks for the heads-up. One of the patches detailed a patching method in such verbose terms that it threw me. As long as I don't have to manually disable half my RAM (where a patch takes care of 64-bit and larger RAM compatibility on the game end) then I'll probably bite, er, pick it up, heh.

Me, too. I have read glowing reviews of this for years but I'm not sure what the combat or core game is really like.

I just started playing it (I got it over the summer sale), so far it seems like the story/dialog are very excellent. Voice acting is also great, which helps a lot. It creates this environment of uneasiness, while still being a little cartoony. It's also one of the only games that does vampire mechanics/morality well.

If you like good stories, especially good stories with vampires in them, you'll love it.

However, so far the fighting has been a bit sloppy, since they're trying to mix vampire hand to hand combat with human guns, in the Half Life 2 engine. Doesn't bother me much, since that clearly isn't the focus.

Oh HELLS yes. I was hoping that maybe, maybe we'd see a price drop to $10 or even $7.50 around halloween. Was NOT expecting to see this as a weekend deal in the middle of the summer.

Opened Steam and was very surprised to see Vampire was on sale, for $5 no less. The game always had my interest, so might as well bite.

I think Bloodlines has been overhyped a bit. I enjoyed it, but can't remember too much specifically. I also don't recall it being broken, as some say, without the fan patches. I haven't replayed it recently, but I think the replayability factor is high, because of all the vampire clan choices (i.e. character class), so I will pick it up to see what I missed the first time around.

YES! Finally! God damn, I've been waiting so long for this game to go for a decent price. So glad I didn't pick this up during the summer sale despite wanting to. I thought to myself then that it would be so typical that after finally picking it up for a low discount it would suddenly appear later in the year as a better deal and I would be kicking myself. Bought!

My only complaint so far with VtM:B is that the melee combat doesn't feel good, especially since it insists on taking me out to third person view any time I enter combat. Loving the atmosphere though.
SO what is vampire copariable to? Oblivion, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, Fallout 1&2 any like that?
Deus Ex [original], but w/ Vampires.

It would've been higher, if the game wasn't so buggy upon its release.
This is why many will tell you to use at the very least Official Patch 1.2.
I'd really recommend you using either Wesp's or Tess's newest unofficial patches w/ the game.
Anyone knows any good mods or updates that fix the Vampire game?
I'd really recommend you using either Wesp's newest unofficial patches or Tess's newest unofficial patches w/ the game.
Wesp's patches are more for modding the game out [especially if you toss it into Plus Mode version] and can change the game from how it was originally intended.
While Tess's stay more true to the game as it was originally intended/released with mainly mostly bug-fixes.

Thanks for posting your great help, MysteryD. There are weird arguments on the Steam forum about which patch to use (Wesp or Tess) and it's apparent that they both have strong merits depending on what one wants. For now I'm going to go with Tess' patch since I want to play it as close to vanilla as possible. Or is that Type O positive in Vampire parlance?

G'nite, folks! I'll be here all week. Tip your waitre-- [gets hit by bottle]

It uses the Source engine and is like Deus Ex (original) with vampires and lots of replay ability. You chose your vampire faction and make your choices. Unfortunately, Activision released it the same day of HL2 and it had tons of bugs at launch.

Yeah, no problem. :)

Luckily, I bought the game on disc, years ago.

On my Win XP PC - I had Vamp: BL installed in two different folders - one for Wesp's patches, one for Tess's.
i.e. I had "...Program Files\Vamp BL Wesp" for one installation and "..."Program Files\Vamp BL Tess" for another.
That's how highly I thought of this game.
And it's also the game I install and reinstall more than any other game period.

I really should test this game on Win 7 sometime.

VTM: Bloodlines was also using an older versions of Source compared to HL2, as well.
Thanks for the quick response
I'll grab Tess's because I just want to play the game fixed, not worried about modding right now
Hey, no problem. :)

Wesp's patches are really for the player wanting more content, tweaks, and other changes HE thought would fit the game.
Especially true in his Plus Version of his patches [w/ even more changes]

If you want want it more true to what the dev's had in mind and just wanted bug-fixes, go w/ Tess.

Are there any mods for Vampire that update the graphics of the game to make them better looking? Something like what the Stalker complete mods do for Stalker except in this case of course for Vampire.

That's very true in fact they had to write their own AI scripts since Valve wasn't finished with theirs when Troika previewed Bloodlines.

So wierd, so the #1 game on my wishlist, Batman:AA GotY goes on sale earlier this week. Now the #2 game, Bloodlines goes on sale this weekend. Wonder if anything else on my wishlist goes on sale soon (probably not but I'm hoping for my #20, the Witcher to go on sale again).
I would buy Vampires...but yeah, I already have it on disc

Buy it people!
I own it on disc as well. Just buy it on Steam, 5 bucks is an absolute steal and easily worth double dipping. :applause:

pick up vampire after all the love it has gotten over the time I've been reading steam threads on cag and the wishing for it to be on sale, runaway
added to the wishlist of stuff I'm probably not going to get around to buying.

last part got me laughing thank you. :)

Well that sucks. I knew I should've waited on Vampire. I haven't even DL'd it yet since the summer sale. Heartbreak.

I hear good things though, and since it hadn't gone on sale for a few years before the summer sale, I doubt it'll go cheaper than 75% any time soon so it's probably worth picking up if you want it.

Why Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is awesome:

Bloodlines was developed by Troika Games, which was composed of some of the original Fallout devs. It benefits most from this roster in the story department, and the way the setting and characters are handled.

It has a similar sense of humor and amorality: It combines extreme darkness (killing innocent people and such) with some of the most wry and sarcastic humor I can recall in a video game since the original Conker's Bad Fur Day. The story is extremely compelling: It has a series of conspiracies woven into a plot that deals with factions in a way that is very similar to a good underground crime story. It is about vampires, but it isn't 'dorky'; it doesn't dwell on the magical sense of vampires, it is very much rooted in the idea of monsters (metaphorical and literal) in the real world. It only really alludes to the magical concept in the object that is the focus of the primary plot. As such, I found it extremely engrossing and was never alienated by the story because it doesn't strictly pander to people who love vampires.

The dialogue is hilarious and sometimes shocking. It is very much like Deus Ex as has been mentioned: You make your decisions through conversation trees as you did in Fallout before it, but the game plays out as an Action/RPG/FPS hybrid. The RPG element is deep (in fact, I saw a Vampire: The Masquerade character sheet from the live-action role playing game, and it is EXACTLY like it is in the game), and each faction you can choose to play as can have a very dramatic effect on how the story is told. The Malkavian, for example, can speak to some objects, as the Malkavians are insane.

The game's greatest weakness is probably its combat. There is very little in the way of armor pieces; although it suggests that you can utilize this element of your inventory, I only ever found three different pieces of armor. Combat is decided through dice rolls, so although you may be aiming at someone's head, if your handgun skills are low, you will probably miss (this is how Alpha Protocol worked). This often upsets people because it gives the illusion of player skill playing a role in combat. While partially true, the player's skill is about as important as the character's skill in deciding if your shot will hit. As such, most players will choose to stick with melee weapons.

Having said that, this game has some moments that will stick with you. There is a conversation that takes place right before the final sequence that is just awesomely conceived. The last conversation you have with this woman and her sister who own a bar together had me going "NO WAY." The primary plot is pretty awesome, and I was very compelled to continue playing its missions to find out what was going on. What exploration you can partake in is rewarding, and the sidequests are satisfyingly dark and involved. The voice acting is spot on. The script is absolutely perfect.

Yes, this game has an 80% on metacritic, but people who love this game don't love it for how refined the gameplay is. They love it for its personality, which it has in spades.
