Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

EA also pulled a few other games around the same time, if i recall. it was the top nerd rage story for at least a couple days there. gah, get out of the cave.

It has to do with EA having to deliver dlc and patches through Steam, which they didn't want to do.

On the topic of commandos. I enjoy squad based games, so I liked it. I have not played any co-op however.

I wonder if Alice: Madness Returns - Steam version will register up on Origin...
So, for those who bought it and tried it, did it?

I remember my game key of Burnout: Paradise from Steam registered up on Origin just fine.

I knew I'd heard about EA and Steam not being best buddies. My husband beat the first Dragon Age game today and was hinting at wanting Dragon Age II for Christmas. We try to keep all our games on Steam, but I may have to just get a retail disc for this one. Or wait for Steam and EA to make up.

I doubt EA and Valve (Steam) will make up anytime soon.
Both Battlefield 3 and SWTOR will require Origin.

It was announced that SWTOR will not require Origin.
As long as it is not a digital copy.

Tell him to go back and play it until he's done all the origins scenarios and gotten all of the ending variations. :D

While Dragon Age 2 is good, it's nowhere as amazing as the original Dragon Age: Origins.
For every step DA2 takes forward, it takes a handful backwards.

Lol, I don't think he's quite that dedicated. He's playing the DLC that came bundled with the Steam game now. He put at least 80 hours into Dragon Age, so I think getting multiple endings might kill him. ;)

Nope. Is has to do with money, and only money. EA's PR might say otherwise, but it has everything to do with money.

You're a company that makes games, publishes games, and now handles your own distribution in download channels--all that money is pure profit. No middle man, no stores, no printing, no storage, no shipping.
Steam has a really large install base though. So is the loss of customers really going to make EA more money?
I Agree. fuck EA.. STEAM for life :D

The extra cost is associated with Sequence appearing on a REAL platform rather than the tedious impermanent craphole that is XBLIG.

Speaking of which, Sequence is good fun. The writing is clever and the voice acting is quite nice if you can handle that it's basically nerds writing other nerds. The mix of rhythm/combat a la Puzzle Quest is pretty neat. I played it on XBLIG when the "All modes = Easy mode" glitch was in effect and even then it was a little taxing. Saw some of those note charts for Hard or Insane. Eugh.

Anywho, biggest problem is how repetitive it is and the soul smashing notion of having to grind enemies for rare drop items to proceed hurts it even further. That said, it's a fun run with good music and a story worth seeing through.

The game's basic genius is bouncing between three windows. The joy in the game is juggling three whole windows of note patterns.

Yup. This crap stopped me from getting BF3 day 1 on PC..........but I'll still pick it up on PS3 since DICE is fucking AWESOME!
The crap isn't Dragon Age II on Steam?
From what I've read it controls very well on console and has been cheap lately (it's $19.99 for Xbox 10/23-10/29 @ Best Buy) ............It would keep you from having oddball PC games not attached to steam.
Anyone tried the Commandos Series? I would want it only for co-op multiplayer since it says it has that. Would it be worth $8 for the full pack?
I'd wait, It's been below $4, as low as $2.99 during last Christmas. Fun games though.

I thought the game looked interesting and downloaded the Xbox trial, since there isn't one on Steam. If I like it, I'll get it during a future sale.

My husband is a hardcore PC gamer, so he would die playing with a controller on Xbox. The game is equally that cheap in disc form, so I'll likely go that route.

So.. Sequence = DDR + RPG..?

Why have I NOT thought of that?! :wall: I used to love playing Stepmania back in high school, so I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this game. Thanks for the heads up, guys! :)
Damn, that is quite a deal. But I know how I am with GTA games. I screw around for a bit, get bored with the missions, and stop playing.
I'm the same way but still tempted by it. I missed out on the Prince of Persia games at this price during the summer and still hate it; this could make up somewhat for it with a good collection of games. I even have GTA IV on 360 and never finished it but still tempted.

Vice City was really fun to mess around with.

I bit on the GTA Complete edition, sucks you don't get to gift the copies you own but $12 for every game and dlc besides GTA IV and GTA 3 is still a pretty sweet deal.

That's weird. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but it shows that GTA III and IV come in the Complete edition for me.

Yeah they are included, I just already own those two games and they don't give you gift copies for the games you already own.
What kind of issues does securom cause?
It's a favorite internet dead horse. Securom limits the number of installs of the game you may have. So if you installed the game, had your computer spontaneously burst into flames, and then had the sequence repeat itself a few times, you wouldn't be able to install it again.

While I'm not a fan of it, the idea of NOT buying a game just because it has an install limit most people will never need to worry about is a bit much, especially when it's SUPER cheap. Don't get me wrong; it's a shitty system. Unfortunately, it's something we have to live with. I don't stop breathing air because the air got polluted.

For those interested, the GTA games with Securom are as follows:
GTA IV - Unlimited installs
Episodes from Liberty City - 15 Machine limit

And that's it.

+1

i bought the commandos pack when it was $3ish last year. I still havent played it. I played the first one for a bit on my laptop and decided Id rather play it on my desktop. but I never got around to it. goddamn backlog never gets any smaller.
Can you play GTA 3, VC and SA on Windows 7?
Haven't tried Vice City but San Andreas yet but I assume so because GTA 3 ran problem free for me.

That's a nice NOTHING they did for Sequence to give the interface a better run for the PC version than they did for Xbox.

And an Xbox 360 controller is less than ideal for it. Keyboard, dance pad, or guitar would all be better.

Still, it's functional on PC but it's a little annoying that they're so late after Breath of Death to join the "Escape the sinking XBLIG ship for sweet sweet Steam money." that they didn't bring a slightly better PC optimization to the table.

STILL, I should support it because it doesn't have the lol indie lol retro heat that other games might and deserves good sales AND I did genuinely find it charming in many ways, but I just gotta gripe even about games I am loathe to gripe about. It's what I do. if I stop, I die.

Nice! Thanks for the info!

I was researching Securom and other forms of DRM yesterday. While I agree that install limits are bad, it looks like most games have a method for revoking activations. If you don't change your hardware you can even reinstall a game on the same computer infinite times while only using a single activation. If you do run out of activations they say you can usually get more from either the store you bought the game from, the game's publisher, or Securom themselves. I'm going to be less hesitant to buy Securom games after learning more about it. It's not fair to restrict paying customers like that, but it's also not the end of the world and you have options if something goes wrong. I still don't like it, but I'll

Just a few thoughts on Dungeon Defenders, which launched yesterday:

1) it seems to be really quite deep, lots of content here;
2) multiplay is really, really fun. Did a few levels with a friend last night and it was a blast;
3) it will certainly appeal to people with an MMO-mindset. The whole idea of loot/talent trees/levelling drew me in;
4) don't let the above point put you off, it's really rather fun;
5) most importantly, if you're a solo player make sure you try the demo first. I'm not convinced I'll play this on my own that often, there's just too much going on and I was struggling to keep up with the waves by the time I reached the third level. I hope it proves me wrong, but for now I'd really lean towards this being a "must multi-play" game.

Well worth the £6.75 I paid for it, although your mileage may vary.

Any newer game from EA should register on Origin no matter where you buy it from. I bought it Alice on Steam and it registers along with all my C&C RA 3+ games, Medal of Honor, Dragon Age Ultimate, etc. The only ones that haven't is when they were over a few years old like Crysis and Dead Space.

It does register on Origin, yes. I just bought it on Steam yesterday when the sale went live, then turned around and registered it to my Origin account.

Unlike Dragon Age: Origins, which was a PC game ported to consoles, Dragon Age 2 is a console game through and through and the PC port really still feels like one, albeit minus the controller which for some reason they refused to enable.

Also, if your husband is a big fan of the first game I really hope he has played the demo for Dragon Age II and knows what he is getting into. It's significantly different than the original and has been a let down for many people who were expecting more of the same style and depth of play.

It has gone way down in price and is going for about $20 now so while I was not thrilled with it and didn't think it was worth $60, it's probably worth at least $20. According to Deals4downloads it has been as low as $11.95 at Direct2Drive in August so keep an eye out for sales on it at non Steam outlets.
