Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
My husband is playing Mass Effect 2 on his PC behind me. I watched him play the first Mass Effect on 360 a lot. Always looked so cool. If it's about the same price during the Christmas sale, I think I'll get it.

We'll hold hands and buy it together! ;)
Mass Effect 1-2 runs pretty good on the PC. I played both of them on the PC with no problems at all. Plus it's nice to be able to back up your save file via external media because Mass Effect 3 uses your choices for Mass Effect 2. Although don't expect Mass Effect 3 on Steam because EA will make sure it's Origin only knowing them.

Finished LIMBO today. It was excellent, but I can understand the gripes of those who paid full price, due to its brevity. I can also imagine how some might find the game overrated, but there's really little genuine fault to be found in it.

I loved Bully on :360: I have passed on the game several times on Steam(mostly due to the technical issues I heard about people having). It sounds like most of those have been fixed. I think I will buy it this time since I would like to play it again.

Little genuine quality, either. It was mediocre. Not technically offensive except if you actually saw the price tag on it and saw the reviews it got. Or if you tried to engage yourself with the game's atmosphere and hoped for it to coalesce into a story.

Of course, I still thought the puzzles wasted my time far, far too much with waddlekid shuffling blocks around slowly slowly slowly but I guess you could disagree on that.
Tripwire Interactive is treating us to a Killing Floor free weekend on December 8th.
For anyone who does not have this game yet, get excited!

I absolutely love this game and plus if you read more about that article they also have a nice surprise for users! Looks like perhaps new weapons or enemies?

I really need to play more Killing Floor. I've only played it a couple of times, mostly to get achievements for these Steam treasure hunts or whatever, but I've had fun with it. I just suck so much! haha. Next time I feel like some multiplayer fun, I'll forgo the usual TF2 and launch KF instead. I do like how they do constant updates too... always a bonus.

I just get kind of confused with the leveling and perks and stuff. I've never been good with skill points and all that crap, haha. I suppose practice makes perfect, though.

Could never get into Killing Floor, just too clunky and repetitive for me. But then again, I didn't really care for the L4D series either.

Awww!

BTW, you are evil. After mentioning Runespell, I had to look it up. I thought I was burned out on puzzle adventure games after Puzzle Quest 2, but there is enough interesting about it that I have to put it on my wishlist. Damn you!

Yes Yes and YES! Killing Floor is an awesome 6 player co-op game that can run on a lot of rigs that can't run a lot of the more demanding games.

If you are more into Single Player games and Big on graphics, than you should pass, but if not....game on!

I have to disagree with you then. I'm not a prolific (got my pc and a lastgen console) gamer, but I've never encountered a game like LIMBO with the same nearly pitch-perfect aesthetic quality. The kind of atmosphere they developed doesn't really require a story; it was perfectly enjoyably creepily dream-like without one. Braid is a similar title that comes to mind where there was a bit too much story for the game's framework. Now that I think of it, I don't think those crazy Danes included more than a single word within the game's context.

Mechanically, the puzzle-balance between thinking and twitching was great for about 7/8th of the game, and even then, there's the last two achievements for those who enjoy that kind of thing—speed-running and twitchiness. Actually, the boxes thing kinda fondly reminded me of the original Tomb Raider (forgiving). LIMBO didn't give me any controller-throwing moments like I'm apprehensive about once I decide to tackle VVVVVV or Super Meat Boy.

Bully seems awesome so far (atmosphere wise), but is the low quality sound part of the port? Or my settings? I use headphones and stereo sounds muffled, while surround sounds way too loud.

I've gotten a few freezes (last a few seconds), but nothing too bad to ruin anything.

Ugh. When I do decide to play Mass Effect, I'd like it to all be on the same system, so that I have the advantage of my choices rolling over to each game. I wonder if I'll just end up playing it on 360, just because I don't want to deal with Origin.

Just buy the Indie Royale Really Big Bundle and get it there. I found it really addictive, and others have commented the same thing. The "Mythic Poker" system really works well.

Yep I agree with getting RuneSpell...great game and very addicting!

Ok, sold. And a few more bucks for good measure. Fortunately, I hadn't bought any of the games in the bundle.
Is Bully on PC any good or should I just get the 360 or PS2 version?
With the latest patch, the game is enjoyable on the PC. Plus, $3.74 is a good price, since the game is, after all, relatively old.

I also picked up Bully yesterday for that awesome price. That's like less than a McD value meal. :) Now I have ME2, Renegade Ops, Bully all stacked up to be played. :)

I would also like to follow RollingSkull's example and discuss LIMBO a bit. I was going to buy it for $5 during the Autumn Sale, but I was delighted to see the game for $2.50. Having spent 4 hours with it, I was able to grab all the eggs and see the hidden content. (As a menial bonus, doing so grabbed me all the Steam Achievements except the "5 Deaths or Less Run" one.)

Since I paid $2.50, I didn't feel cheated in the least, but I wasn't as amazed as one would hope. [This next part may be a minor gameplay spoiler at best.] The hidden content for collecting all the eggs would have been fine had it resulted in something meaningful. (A Steam Achievement, for me, was not satisfactory. Back in my day, you got bonus endings and additional story for finding all the hidden stuff and completing an unnecessarily hard stage. In this regard, even Braid is a better example than LIMBO.) When I rose from the elevator to see the same stage I had left behind, I was disillusioned.

All the symbolism and imagery were quite amusing, but LIMBO wasn't the most amazing puzzle platformer I had ever experienced. This is by no means a proper review, so I hope it doesn't offend any hardcore fans of the game. I myself am glad I bought it, if only to see what fans of the XBLA version saw in the game. However, I would not recommend LIMBO to your general game player. I might be inclined to liken LIMBO as a "supplement" for fans of Braid; At $2.50, LIMBO at least made a nice diversion.

Mass Effect didn't have any big decisions that crossed over into ME2 in a noticeable way. It's kind of sad, but also convenient.

There's no points to distribute once you increase a perk but the game does get pretty grindy if you want to level up.

My guess is weekend deals are Brink and Killing Floor. Brink just announced it will be 75% off and free to play this weekend. I'm assuming as its steamworks that they are referring to steam but who knows.

Edit: looks like its confirmed:

Actually, it doesn't matter which client your Mass Effect is on. You can just move your save files over to the save files on Origin (if indeed Origin is required) and still have all your choices carry over.

This is why there are save files uploaded to the internet and allows people to use other people's saves in order to have the "perfect" load.

All you have to do is check the daily deals to be entered into a drawing to win your top 10 wishlist games? Hell, I do that anyways. Time to put the most expensive games at the top of your wishlists, folks!

Dear Steam,
I love you. Never leave me.

liking the new chance to win games on yoru wishlist. Although I doubt if i won they would give me dragon age 2 which is still on my wishlist...But i can dream
Is Brink worth the $5? More so do people still play Brink?
No one is apparently playing Brink. Even during their last free weekend, I couldn't find a game to jump in to. That said, it's a decent solo game as well. I'd be willing to play online with anyone who gets it (or has it) since I got it in the Bethesda pack during Quakecon.

I want to buy a 4-pack to gift to friends (to get them digging), but Steam won't allow me to buy it.

Is it because I already own Terraria? Can you not buy mulit-packs if you already own the game?

ME3 won't be on Steam. Everything from BF3 forward from EA on PC will be via Origin.

I recently had copied over all my save data to a new system. One of the two saves that had copy protection was ME2. I really hope that isn't an issue with backing up saves to the cloud.

No, the giveaway offer runs until the holiday sale starts. This is their pre-holiday sale promotion.
I want to buy a 4-pack to gift to friends (to get them digging), but Steam won't allow me to buy it.

Is it because I already own Terraria? Can you not buy mulit-packs if you already own the game?
That's possible. A 4-pack on steam is one activation for you, and 3x gift codes. You can't get 4x gift codes from a 4 pack.

It doesn't look like I can reorder or delete stuff from my wishlist from the website. Looks like I can't do that until I get home. (I need to, considering that DA2 is still in my top 10...)

Terraria impressions? Has the game been part of any bundles, etc. lately? I'm thinking of grabbing a 4-pack to play with the family.

It's pretty dang fun.
And with more people playing it only gets better.

If you like exploring / building / side scrolling platforming it's quite a steal at the price it is right now.

I'll drop in my comments from the Hallowe'en sale:

Terraria is entirely what you make of it.

I bought it at release after being nagged by a mate, and I didn't like it at all. It was open-ended, no real structure, it just gave you a big world and said "do something, what you looking at me for?". I didn't like that. I've been conditioned to like questing and so on, it gives me direction :) Left it alone, didn't play for a couple of months.

Then after a while, I saw a few vids and saw all the cool higher-level armour sets and I thought "I'd quite like that actually". So I played it solid for four whole evenings, building my castle, farming ore to get copper/iron/silver/gold armour, building platforms to take on the bosses... everything.

I got so far as killing each boss at least once, got a couple of armour sets, then the urge to farm everything disappeared again. I've barely touched it since.

At 30 hours playtime, it's hard to say I've not had value with it, but if you're the kind of person who likes some kind of direction then you may have to set yourself a goal beforehand. If you want to make yourself a shiny gold tower with shiny chandeliers and shiny, erm, skulls(?) then the world is your oyster. Just don't forget to lock the door.

p.s. It's worth noting that there's a pretty big content patch (1.1 I believe) due out in the next month or two.
Oh, and that "pretty big content patch is due out today. There's plenty of game to be had for your £1.50 (or whateveritiswhereyouare), it's just a question of how you go about it. I had a few hours playing with friends last night and it got me back into it. Playing with your family will probably be a blast.

Thanks for the impressions, Flowette and Cosmos! I know my brother would love it for sure. Now to decide whether I'd have the time for it (always super busy)...
I Highly recommend getting the Terrafirma map viewer for Terraria. It really helps with finding your way around and getting chests.
You should probably play through your first time without this. It kind of ruins the exploration factor if you know where everything is.
Quick, someone name more high profile games that will have Steam PC releases in 2012. I only have Darksiders II.
I presume you're trying to flesh out your Steam wish list? Just click on "Coming soon" on the Steam home page. If it has an entry on Steam, then it's on that list.

Borderlands 2, Bioshock Infinity, and Torchlight 2 are supposed to come out in 2012... but they don't have Steam entries yet.

Unfortunately, none of those are available on steam yet. If you click coming soon its only about 8 titles.

All I have for big titles releasing next year are Darksiders 2 and Metro Last Light (probably a good indication they are steamworks).
