Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

You can hardly blame them for cutting it short after they noticed everyone sharing what was clearly meant only for folks who did the survey.

When I took the survey it said you can share it with your friends and they would appreciate it if they took the survey as well.

If you check out the screenshot I posted at the bottom of the last page, it's pretty obvious that they were ok with people giving the code out to their friends.

Actually, CAG kinda shrunk the screenshot in my post. So here's a direct link. http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/6838/gmgwintersurveycode2.jpg

Seems silly to cry over a coupon being cut short when they come out with new coupons all the time and extend them all the time. I'm willing to bet that once it expires they issue another one for 30% off or something anyway.

It is just the principal of the matter. You say one thing and do another, not cool regardless of what it is. Also 35% is the highest coupon they have ever given out, we normally get 25% off ones and had a week with the 30% off one as well

I think it's just a lack of foresight on their part, giving out a big juicy coupon valid through the biggest sale season of the year. If you have been following GMG, you'll note that they've been issuing coupons for shorter periods but extending or issuing a new coupon like clockwerk. This gives them greater flexibility.

GMG is also being kind of slick in other ways for example they would generally have 75% off sales as the daily deals but with all these voucher codes lately it seems like they have been doing more 66% and such.

Take the Dead Island GOTY

75% off would be about $4.99
Today it's 67% off at $6.59. Now throw a 25% off code on top of that and ta-da $4.92.

I can't blame them too much for that, a deal is still a deal and expecting games sub 75% off outside of a bundle is a bit unreasonable.

Still, I can't help feeling like they are using math to make some deals seem better than they are. Making the sales slightly less is kind of like making ice cream containers just slightly smaller and hoping people won't notice.

It seems they are using American marketing.

RPG Maker just got posted as software but good lord $70?

Doesn't look like there is any Workshop integration or anything which would have been nice.
It seems they are using American marketing.
I suspect there's also a little bit of the rebate factor involved in the GMG pricing rejiggering. If you lower the % off and have a coupon on top of that, some people won't bother with the coupon but will still buy vs everyone gets 75% off if you just do a flat sale with no additional voucher.

>.< While posting the THQ thread I had a terrible vision...
In 2013 we will see DLC that only adds more achievements to a base game.

I'd also add the "wow, extra deal" factor with splitting it into a large percent off + decent coupon.

Yesterday I picked up a loaf of french bread at Safeway. It was stickered at $1.49 (usually $1.99). However the barcode was hosed (showing $40 for 38 count cream puffs, wtf?), so the cashier had to manually enter it. Even when manually entering, she charged me $1.99 than took $0.50 off. /facepalm It's all about emphasizing how much you saved (normally more prominent on the receipt that how much you spent).

By that measure, it seems even sillier to potentially annoy your customers by screwing with their one-time use coupons. The difference being that one "silly" party is going back on their word while asking for your money.
You can hardly blame them for cutting it short after they noticed everyone sharing what was clearly meant only for folks who did the survey.
If they really wanted to give out a coupon to ONLY those who did the survey, they should really give out UNIQUE CODES AND tie it your GMG account.

That's not really far off from what we get today. Cosmetic DLC is pretty useless and no matter how bad mission DLC is, it usually adds achievements to the list so you have to buy it if you want to 100% the game.

As for Safeway, they probably had to manually key in the code for a loaf of french bread which rang up at regular price and then manually adjust it to honor the sticker. I don't really think marketing was involved there, probably just an employee actually doing their job as opposed to being lazy and just entering a general Grocery entry which wouldn't help them with their stock checker.

Defenders of Ardania Collection is $3.25 75% off at Gamersgate
The MSRP for it there is $12.99 while on Steam its MSRP is $18.99.
It does activate on Steam, says so on the page and I just purchased and activated it with no problems.

Wow.. I was literally just about to ask about his game. Anyone ever play it? Thoughts? It says Tower Defense and the screen shots look cool. Sucker for TD so close to biting.

Interestingly, when you buy the bundle on Steam, you save -$4.02 over the price of buying the components separately.

LOL I didn't even notice that. I just went to the Steam page to check if the DLC was worth it or not or should I just wait for it to go on sale on Steam and just get the base game.

It's mediocre to poor but it has fake Sean Connery guy so I'm buying it. Would be nice to see Amazon drop it to this price but I know they don't match Gamer's Gate. Might just give it a pass and hope for Amazon to do their own promotion down the line.

That's awesome. I hate most tower defense but now I want it too. What the hell is wrong with me?

I'd imagine you could knock a couple of cents off by using IAMELDERGEEK to buy blue coins and then again on the actual game.

Don't forget if you buy 3 games you get the 4th when free during the entire GG holiday sale.
Honestly only the old *everything* publisher packs appealed to me. Another thought would be a publisher pack of older titles (that aren't selling much on their own anymore) that you might not buy a-la-carte.
I liked some of the new packs they had on offer last winter sale. A couple years back I bought the Telltale EVERYTHING pack, and got something like the Bone, Strongbad, Monkey Island, Wallace and Gromit and 3 Sam & Max season packs, plus a couple of poker games.

Last year, they offered a new telltale pack that I didn't get at the time but would like to see again this year that was all the stuff after that one. A pack of just Jurassic Park, Walking Dead, Law and Order, and Back to the Future(, and hector and puzzle agent 2 for completeness' sake), would be more appealing to me and probably cheaper.
Perhaps the base game recently dropped from $15 to $10 and they forgot to adjust the bundle price?
That's exactly what happened. It used to be $15 base but they permanently lowered the price because it's a relative turkey and the multiplayer component failed horribly.
Don't forget if you buy 3 games you get the 4th when free during the entire GG holiday sale.
Wait that's for anything on GG? I thought that was just for the Indie Fort weekly bundles.

*Edit: Oh nm I see it now. Hmm well I guess you have to buy all 4 at the same time though and then the cheapest is free. I might find 4 games I want during their entire holiday sale but not the same day.

I'd say someone could buy 4 copies of Ardania, get one free and then divide up the total by 4 and sell them off but I think GG only lets you get one extra game as giftable don't they?
Transcripted is $2.49 today, 75% off. Wish I had been able to buy it on Gamefly for $0.79 last week, but I seem to need a paying membership/another card to charge to. Wouldn't accept my payment...
If you have a PayPal debit card you can use that and it's just the same as using PayPal. You have to do the same thing on Amazon, for that matter.
Crysis Max is $7.50 (again)
I got Crysis Max on GameFly for $4 something after a 10% off code, so it's been cheaper there. Didn't activate on Origin though.
RPG Maker just got posted as software but good lord $70?

It's usually $90; pretty sure that's what I paid for it ages ago. Looks like they dropped the price here and on their website for the Steam release.

It's an excellent program though, but you need to know how to do your own spriting, composing, etc if you don't want your game looking the same as the next guy's.

And the game has its own import/export system, in addition to extremely easy drag-and-drop folders to manage what resources you want to use and what you don't, so I'd imagine integrating workshop compatibility would have been more or less useless. Take that from someone who uses lots of user made (imported) resources.

I know, but with the fact that people get all 'WOT? $5 for an RPG Maker game on Steam? Outrageous!' and yet the actual software itself there is $70 is hard to wrap my head around.

Yeah, I guess that's just how it goes with programs. It's pretty powerful software with the potential to do just about anything you want it to, provided you know RGSS2 (and aren't expecting to make a 3D game or something).

Kind of like someone spending hundreds on the latest Photoshop. One could make thousands of dollars on a graphic design project, while another could make something that looks like it was made in paint.

The potential is there (To the Moon), but it's rarely utilized correctly. Either way, I wish it was cheaper, and I still don't see myself paying for games made with it unless they really, really catch my interest.

Okay so with Gamersgate I figured I could do this:

Orcs Must Die 2 $3.73 (75% off)
Orcs Must Die 2 $3.73 GIFT (75% off)
Defenders of Ardania $3.25 (75% off)
Defenders of Ardania GIFT $3.25 (75% off)

Subtotal - $13.96
Subtract free 4th game @ $3.25
$10.71
Subtract 5% off of $3.24 IAMANELDERGEEK code (only good on one game not all games in the cart)
$10.55

10,000 blue coins - $10.00
Subtract 5% off with IAMANELDERGEEK code
$9.50

So basically I'd get two Ardania + DLC steam keys and two OMD2 Steam keys (base only) for $9.50 + another 550 blue coins (which I have enough in my account to cover).

Of course then I'd have to find people to offload the extra Ardania and OMD2 keys to. Decisions decisions. :p

Damn, I would have been all over this if I hadn't bought Ardania last night when it flipped.

I'll buy Ardania from you if you actually go through with it.

Can you actually use blue coins to apply to a partial amount of the purchase price. I have 700ish from buying Deus Ex HR stuff a year ago and noticed they can expire. But for like $2.50 for base Ardania plus the DLC I'd buy it from you, too, assuming you'd take it in the form of Amazon credit since I have no paypal account.

Oops, never mind looks like I was too late!

Idiotekque/jatan11t: PMed you guys. That was fast. :p

I went for the deal because I doubt they'll get much cheaper than this with all the GG finangling involved.

No you cannot. But you can buy blue coins in $1 increments, so it doesn't end up TOO bad to simply buy enough coins to cover the rest of the purchase along with the blue coins you already have.

Hmm, one of those articles that Asheskitty linked about the Valve console was speculating it might be Linux because Gabe hates Windows 8 etc., but how many games on Steam actually work for Linux? It seems like it's not the majority to me but maybe I am just not looking for it.

No, you must have the total amount of the purchase in blue coins.

Noticed that, although in this case for me I'd have to end up buying $3 worth, anyway. Guess I'd save $0.25!

There is another one worth linking on The Inq that has links to some more background.

We tend to think of the SteamBox in from a PC Gaming Master Race perspective. Another way to think about a possible SteamBox would be more like a PC-powered Ouya. Valve can launch it with valve titles and whatever handful of devs have Linux games ready to ship. Some of the linux friendly indie devs might also be enticed. The SteamBox reception in the market would determine if more devs are interested in linux ports. I would also note that they could also sell wine-wrapped Windows games (there are a good amount that perform pretty well in a wineskin).

Note that their living room focus (and Big Picture) indicates a console-controller focus. Now is a particularly interesting time for such a SteamBox due to the six or seven year old PS3 and 360 have held back system requirements, so an appropriately spec'd PC could be pretty cheap. Also TVs mostly run at 30 FPS.

Also worth noting you can double-dip on promo codes.

Use the promo when buying the blue coins, then use it again when buying the game that you are paying for with those discounted blue coins.

Not surprising given Gaben's spawning from Bill Gates' crew. It's basically a way for him to enter the console market with Steam being the XBLA or PSN of that particular system. Also sounds like he is pretty high on Linux so he doesn't have to deal with Microsoft at all. Wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of Valve OS in the future.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it some thought. Sort of hoping Tony comes up with a similar deal so I can grab it from Amazon and pocket another promo code, too. Guess I have about six hours to decide!

Yeah, running games at 30FPS is relatively easy. When you're 2-3 feet from the computer screen and the game is running at 30FPS, you can tell. When you're 8 feet away from the TV screen with a controller in your hands... not quite as much.

You just have to wonder if it'll launch before or after the next gen consoles. We all know how well the Dreamcast fared... but then again, it wasn't technically a PC. Will be very interesting to see how this goes down. From Gabe's talk about getting the Linux stuff working better, it doesn't sound like he's in much of a rush.

Meh, I think if they went Linux it would have to lean really heavy on indies. I don't love the idea of emulators wrappers or any of that either. I mean it's okay for old and retro stuff but once you start moving into more complex games I don't think it's the best idea.

I think Valve would have a hard time convincing publishers to develop for yet another platform when it's a struggle in many cases to even get them to continue to support the PC. You know from the get go anything Valve wants EA will be out.

I just think it would be a mistake to release Steam hardware that won't run the majority of their 2,500 or so game library.

Of course this is all hypothetical talk so who knows what will happen?

Steam has probably a big enough market share that you'd see at least some AAA publishers start requiring Linux versions. Probably not an outfit like EA but I could see THQ (if they survive), Squeenix, and others doing it.
