Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V6! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

With the V6 Thread, we're trying a slight formatting change. We used to list every possible Steam deal in the OP, but they change too frequently for anyone to keep up with (even in the Wiki format). So now, we'll leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Winter sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 1/22

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
So much for Hotline Miami for free in January. Ah well, never know it might pop up again in later January.
What'chu talkin' bout Mooby? Why wouldn't it pop up in January?
I didn't see any replies to this post and I have comments on both your topics:

- Civ V: My wife and I pre-ordered it and bought it immediately on release day. Hell, my wife even bought a new computer so she could play it in all its glory. We installed it day one, started multiplayer, and immediately realized it was garbage. It's come a long way in the two years that it's been out. Civ V today is fine. Civ V two years ago left a bad taste in my mouth to where I have a hard time going back to it. Note that this is mainly multiplayer unhappiness. It got to the point where the 2k mods were editing previous 2k employees' posts that promised multiplayer fixes "in a few weeks" after the initial release.

- Magic is fine. 2012 allows you to edit out all cards from a deck, though there are stil the pre-constucted decks that you play with. Altogether, a much improved experience over the original Magic released in 2011 (or 2010?). Multiplayer is fun. Singleplayer is, too.
Thanks for the response. I never play multiplayer Civ V so I can't speak to that. Being a tech fiend though I liked that my overwhelming technical superiority actually mattered in wars. Stacks of longbowmen wouldn't some how defeat tanks. In fact, it took a little adjustment but I'm a big fan of no stacked units in general now. Combat isn't perfect but I like different unit types having real value and positional strategy, they can do more with it, but I like it a lot more than just stacking things.

I guess my main question with Magic is how does the card collecting work? Can you only build decks from cards that make up the pre-made decks? Do you just get the whole set and make whatever decks you want from the start? Again, I've been away from the game for like 10 years so maybe a lot has changed, but what stops you from making a deck full of rare power cards?

I may just bite anyways since it's still cheaper than buying a single real starter deck of whatever edition they have out these days.
Deadlight is $7.49 right now. Does anyone think it will get cheaper, because I'm tempted to get it.
Probably eventually but it is EASILY worth 7.50. It's a fantastic game.
It seems like by the time the game plus the expansions are on sale for a good price the next year's version is out and I just end up never buying them. (only have the original release + expansions)
Yeah I noticed that too lol.
Any lists of games that I should buy that are under advertised, appreciated, rated?Usually see some lists toward the end of the sale, but some keep a running list I would think.
GAF does a better job with those lists. Haven't checked there yet but they probably have something helpful.

Well, it's a daily today on Steam (Amazon doesn't PM flash/votes) so it won't be another daily at the tail end of the Steam sale which would force an Amazon price match. But, yep, there's a chance it could be at 50% off again later in the month.

Ah, I understand you now. Yeah, would've been nice for it to have been a daily in January so Amazon would price match, but I'm pretty sure the chance of it being extremely cheap or free with promo credit on Amazon in January are pretty high anyway.

It'll definitely be $2.50 after coupon since the default sale price is $7.50. Free would have been nutty since, at this point, I probably have about a dozen of those promo codes.

Lmfao. & damn I can't front, Guild Wars 2 for $30 was tempting in itself.

Every time Arkham City pops on up sale I'm tempted to rebuy it. Part of it is because I want to play the Harley Quinn DLC and it'd be $2.50 cheaper to buy it on Steam than just get the DLC from Microsoft, and part of it is because I enjoyed the game so much I wouldn't mind achievement whoring it.

But then, I have so much else that I haven't played through once...

Anyone else looking like they'll get the sale badge via votes as opposed to buying something? Been trading and picking things up on amazon rather than actually buying things on steam...

This is what has me curious. Been thinking of trying it with all the PC GOTY awards I've seen it get, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the 1st and I have a ton of other games to play. Thoughts? I assu,me it doesn't really drop in price often since that's how NCSoft gets paid to run it?

GW2 would either be bad and make me angry that I wasted $30 on it or so good that I never get to my other $600 worth of backlogged games.

Either way, I should probably stay away from it.

Personally, I was never able to get into GW1 myself despite looking into it several times, but I absolutely love GW2. I think a lot of it would depend on what it was you didn't like about GW1.

Guild Wars 2 fixes a lot of what's wrong with MMOs and it hides the grind well but it is still an MMO and the grind is still there.

I definitely prefer the buy the game but there's no monthly fee model as I just can't see myself ever paying a monthly again on any game. (even looking for a deal on Secret World and I really thought that I was done with MMOs...nope just done paying monthly fees it turns out)

I honestly didn't play it much, but not being able to jump and some of the artificial exploration barriers persistently annoyed me. The instanced world where I felt as though I never ran into anyone else by accident unless in a city also seemed odd to me. I was pretty big into WoW at the time which may have affected my decision-making too.

Absolutely this.

I like GW2 for my MMO fix but I'm so massively glad that I can leave it for weeks at a time. As MMOs go, GW2 is indeed very fun.

How is that Towns game. The city building and rpg aspects sound cool, but the art style turns me off. I absolutely hate minecraft and the art style reminds me of it.
GAF does a better job with those lists. Haven't checked there yet but they probably have something helpful.
I googled it. They seem to just post box art to games with no real information. I'd make one, but I don't follow the industry enough to know what's considered underrated. I just buy whatever I hear you guys or my RL friends talking about.

It would be really awesome, though, to have a list of lesser known titles that are still quality.

fuck it, I'll make a list of what I know.
There's no consensus. You never stated if you bought it. If you did you can provide screencaps. Until then...
That is a reading comprehension failure on your part. You quoted me saying I did not purchase it, but had it in my cart on the place your order screen. That's as far as I went because I decided not to purchase it.

In case you were wondering why I didn't reply in affirmation to sunghost's post, I felt that his reply was a sufficient conclusion to the matter that my l did not disagree with and felt that no further input was needed. I write my posts in a blunt, matter-of-fact, nonchalant, etc. manner, so it made sense to me when I read it. If it read differently to you or anyone else, I apologize.

Anyway, that's enough negativity on the subject. Back to discussing the steam deals (or non-deals, whichever way each individual leans toward).
How is that Towns game. The city building and rpg aspects sound cool, but the art style turns me off. I absolutely hate minecraft and the art style reminds me of it.
Every impression I've seen about it is that the game is an alpha and feels incomplete. It's an interesting concept, but not something that's worth paying money for yet. I've heard it does have a minecraft feel to it, so if you don't like Minecraft, it probably isn't a game for you.
Well you get experience for everything; crafting, exploration, mining/gathering, events, kills, etc.

Beyond that there's the level scaling where your high level buddy can come to your low level area, have his level scaled to the top-end of said area, and quest right along with you earning himself experience along the way while not obliterating everything in sight thus sucking the fun-out for you. (it also scales the low levels up for certain things as well)

The events are hit and miss but when they are good they are sublime with tons of players working together in multi-stage battles without ever needing to group-up or go into an instance or whatever. At the end, a giant chest drops and everyone gets their own instanced loot so there's no ninja'ing either. And that gear can be all kinds of levels including 80 (cap) even though the character you used was say level 30 but scaled to 80 for the event.

I haven't been playing long enough so I'll defer to someone who knows more but Guild Wars 2 single-handedly rekindled my love for the MMO genre and I really thought that I was friggin done.

GW2 - I bought the CE. I've been a fan since the get-go and was rabid for the game.

I stayed about 2 weeks. I could NOT get into it.

Honestly, I picked up TSW recently and that's my little MMO fix.

So not only does it allow you to do what you want to level, but it doesn't let your low-level hinder your involvement in the world around you (eg: you said your lvl 30 scaled up to 80 for the fight)? Those are both definitely intriguing. That combined with the GameTrailers review I just watched is kinda making me think about it....

GW2 feels more like an MMO in that the world is non-instanced, expansive, and greatly encourages exploration. And, yes, you can jump.

One of the things I like is that they really got rid of the breadcrumb feel that WoW created. When you enter an area, you really aren't pointed in any particular direction, but if you get close to certain areas, you'll automatically trigger a quest specific to that area to complete. There's no running back and forth to NPCs, which makes it feel much more intuitive.

Even better, are the "dynamic events", which are basically quests that randomly appear in the world. Some are very small and basic (escorting a convoy, killing certain NPCs, etc.), while others can be quite impressive (blowing up a boat with cannons, protecting a camp, fighting dragons, etc.).

And, one of my favorite innovations is "jump puzzles". Essentially, they found a way to inject platforming into an MMO.
Uh yeah, good luck with that. I'll pray for you.

Please note in the future that Steam purchases, per the Steam Subscriber Agreement, are not refundable - this store credit was issued as a one-time customer service gesture.

If you have any further questions, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you.

Well you can't, as a low level, go bounding into high level areas as it won't scale you up then but it does for things like special events and PvP. So you are still gated by areas as a low level but they do make exceptions for certain things.

It's a bit of a mix and as Flowette said you can just not login for weeks at a time and only show-up for the major events and never feel like you are at a huge disadvantage nor do you feel any pressure to play because of the lack of a monthly fee.
What's the point, the computer running the voting will just pick whatever it wants anyway.
I'm inclined to believe this. The voting has just turned to the most idiotic votes this sale for the most part. The Valve voting robot is making itself known.

But in all seriousness yeah the complaining is a little much. Truth be told I'd like to see lower prices but I'm not going to go ranting about anything, except that rigged vote concerning GTA: VC and Bioshock. That was rigged for sure. I can feel it in my Christmas Grump blood.
Still debating on Hotline Miami. Get it for $5 now or see about Amazon? ERGH! Choices :p
I would have picked it up right here and now if it had hit $2.49(75% off) but Valve doesn't want me to buy it haha.

You only get scaled UP for very few things, PVP primarily, and the last world event were the only things that scale you up. Being scaled down is much more common.

It's a good game, but not anything vastly different than other MMO's.

I have some EA and THQ bonuses from Amazon, but don't see anything I'm likely to use them on, if I can help someone else out, perhaps...

I played Everquest (I and II) for almost 10 years, skipped the WOW thingy and never thought I'd do an MMO again.

Many of my old EQ friends are RL friends and the biggest challenge was staying in level and quest ranges with your friends. I know they eventually added mentoring and the like, but it still meant making choices.

GW2 changed that for me. My friends and I can play together when ever, where ever we want, no matter our levels or gear. I don't feel compelled to grind or be in raid guild to get in on the action. That's perfect for me.

Happy Holidays!!

I've been mulling over getting Endless Space, anyone here played it and have any insight? Worth it at $10 or should I wait until the summer sale and get it for $2.50?

Regarding Civ V, the experience is much better now. Actually feels like a properly built game. Singleplayer is where it's at, despite being billed as "amazing multiplayer experience". You'll enjoy V.

You have set decks that are in the game, with different colors/themes. You play matches and unlock cards with each victory. You can then modify your decks. You unlock say 20 or so cards, and you can have minimum 60 cards in the deck, just like the real thing.

I used to play MtG all the time and LOVE playing it on xbox (same as this pc version). What I like about it is that I can play online with others and not lose instantly to some guy who spent $1,000 on cards I'll never have.

Civ 5 was fun. IMO 2 was better. I enjoyed the G&K expansion for 5 as well.

Not seeing much to spend my Amazon EA on. That's kinda bummer as I have 2 of them to use.

Civ V for $7.50 is definitely worth it.

Not sure about 2013, since I don't have it. 2012 allows you to remove cards in the base deck as you unlocked cards. I loved this feature, as I also hated that it couldn't be done in the original.

Is the learning curve for Magic 12 really difficult for someone who has absolutely no experience in these kind of card games?
