Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V6! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

With the V6 Thread, we're trying a slight formatting change. We used to list every possible Steam deal in the OP, but they change too frequently for anyone to keep up with (even in the Wiki format). So now, we'll leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Winter sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 1/22

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Thirty Flights of Loving was less than ten minutes long tops. Probably less than 5. I found absolutely nothing to like about it and suspect those reviewers who praised it are crazy.

Don't Starve bored me. It just felt like all I was doing was collecting crap rather than actually surviving.

Banzai Pecan is on sale on Desura again for around $5.

The developer removed it from Greenlight because a lot of people were trolling with 'EWW ANIME COOTIES! DOWNVOTED!' comments. (and yes I realize there is no downvote but people keep saying that)

"Took it out of the spotlight" for the time being. For those who actually enjoy the game and wanted to see it on Steam, sadly I don't feel it's going to happen, mainly because of the majority reeeeeeeally don't want to see it on there/ feel "offended"/ not enough greys and browns/ too "Japanese/ won't want to bother trying it but hate it anyways/ etc.

It's stupid and silly, yes, but eh, if the people REALLY don't want to see it on there, so be it. Indie/Homebrew is a bit tougher to get on there than on Indievania or Desura. Yeah, all games will have their share of "haters", and people who just need to look for a reason to hate it and developers need to bear tougher skin, but it's a bit much to deal with, especially from a guy who really just "wanted to make a wwtf-retro-throwback game".

I might put it back up there, but only if there's more support for the actual game itself.

While I realize the genres aren't one and the same, I'm surprised that this would be a significant reaction from the same community that piddles itself over any half-assed JRPG knock-off.
Sacred2 Gold 2 $9.99 for people who own the original "Sacred 2 Fallen Angel" on steam. Should I bite?
Are you truthfully going to play it right now or very soon? Because if not it will probably be 75% off at $5 eventually.

I mean Deep Silver has had some of their bigger and more recent titles sub $10 recently so I have no doubt this one will go lower at some point.

Sacred Citadel is supposed to be due out some time this year so Sacred 2 may see a sale then.

Somehow my evangelizing for Banzai Pecan has gotten OTHER people to take notice of it going on sale. Nice.

I maintain that it is not a great game (And probably it is reaching to call it good but I'd give it that.) but it is fun and the sway mechanic is shamelessly ripped from God Hand. It's pretty tough in places too.

But it is not the sort of thing you should jump into unless you already think "Hey that looks like it'd be fun!"

It's more Sacred 2.
If you like Sacred 2 and want to play it RIGHT NOW - I'd say go for it.
Do you want more areas, quests, and the new Dragon Mage class?

I don't have the Steam version, I got it from Gamersgate.
So, I don't know how Com Patch works on their version on S2: Gold.
If you want to run the Community Patch for Sacred 2, you absolutely do NEED S2: Gold Edition.

There's a Deep Silver rep on the Steam Community forum and he said the community patch works just fine and even posted a link to it there.

Thanks for pointing this out. I've been in the mood lately for a game like this, and all this talk about Sacred 2 Gold is making me want to play it. I played the original (without expansion) on the Xbox 360 and thought it was pretty good, so I grabbed it during the sale.

Gonna install it and the community patch and see how well it's held up.

EDIT:

I'm working on standardizing the Greenlight interface. What do you guys think?

After a purchase, they email you a receipt.

Are you asking for a receipt from a retailer you didn't make the purchase from?

Nope, how does that even work?

edit. I was talking about this kind of receipt:

and I was wondering if this should be enough as a proof receipt:

I don't have the print for New Vegas for example.

Eh, to be honest those are pretty worthless to keep track of -- the only major concern is you have some way of proving your Steam account is, in fact, yours should you lose access to it (can be done through a credit card number or physical retail serial key).

Keep in mind -- barring European Union protection laws -- Steam can revoke your games at any time for virtually any reason.

Proof to whom and of what? I'm not sure what it is you're hoping to establish.

That's useless then, thanks.

I've heard about a guy who lost access to a game and steam asked for a proof of purchase, so I was a little worried.

Most of the people who lose access to individual games bought from shady retailers and/or third parties who were probably selling pirated/fabricated keys. So long as you're making the purchase yourself from legitimate retailers like Amazon or Green Man Gaming and there's a proof of that purchase on those respective accounts you'll be fine. I've yet to see an instance where someone was 'unjustly' stripped of their game(s). They might not have been aware of the illicit nature of the key(s) but you're always taking a risk buying something from a random person on the internet (as opposed to a legitimate website).

Interesting. I just received an email from Steam with a verification code to access my account from a new computer.
The interesting part is that I didn't initiate it.

Isn't that generated when the password is correct?

That can also pop if you sign in to Steam through a browser, even on the same machine.

Still, if you didn't initiate it you may wanna scrap that password. Especially if you use the same password for the email account tied to that Steam account.

Using Google Translate:

- "Good to the auxiliary" writes the first poster
- "Thanks a landlord it! ! !" claims another user
- "Support flour guns." raves an enthusiastic supporter

I also really dig their forum message, "Please observe the provisions of the [Chinese Steam user forum Generic Codes] at any time, let us join hands to build a harmonious atmosphere of the Steam Community."

Seriously though, it's a great extension. Got a mention on GAF the other day, I'd expect the installs to continue to climb.

Should've learned to read Chinese. Can only speak it lmao. That's cool as shit tho well deserved.

Haven't checked Steam or CAG in a while, but had to get the Darksiders Franchise this time around on Amazon. I can help out with the $5 EC credit if anyone needs it.

I'm going to drop this question here as the Origin thread regulars must have nodded off: do you miss out on anything by playing Crysis 2 and not having played Crysis 1 or Warhead? I ask because of the Origin $5 deal. Unfortuately I missed the $1 Crysis 1 deal yesterday.

There's not a ton of story to the series. There's a few nods here and there that have more of an impact if you played the first (like who you get the suit from) but for the most part it's a new cast of characters and you likely know most of the story just from the trailers.

They play a bit differently, so I'd still suggest getting the earlier games. They're more about more open levels, and more ways to tweak your playstyle.

Thank the landlords for flour guns!

I wonder what our posts are like when people have to translate from English to another language. Probably just as ridiculous.

Been seriously thinking about throwing my resume Valve's way. I've been reading up on their "corporate culture" and I think I'd fit in well there. I have 16 years experience in the tech industry in a WIDE variety of positions, which seems to be what they're typically looking for.

I just don't know if "Hey! I made this cool Chrome extension that does X, Y, and Z! You should consider hiring me." would be enough. Thoughts?

It never hurts to submit a resume.

Whoah. Apparently Flour Guns is a real thing.

I'll have to find my old H&R, hammer model, with stock black grips, and add the picture later. Looks a lot like yours. Not a shooter in it's present condition. The gunsmith I took mine to, discouraged me from putting money into it. I believe it to be a 7mm Swiss cal. The counter guy told me these guns were known as "flour guns" in the old days, because they came free in large sacks of flour. Kind of tells you where the country has changed over the years. That's the kind of Cracker Jack prize I could appreciate. Sorry those days are long gone.

I would send them a resume if I were you. What have you got to lose?

I think you should maybe polish out as many features as you can/want to, then send it their way. I'm sure Valve would be interested in implementing some if not all of the features, so you just need to keep building interest and get more people to take notice.

Have you posted about the extension in other communities? I know there definitely would be interest in a lot of different areas around the web, so I'd build up a userbase to demonstrate the interest to Valve.

That's kind of my thoughts too. I feel like Valve is the kind of place where you really need to get their attention to get noticed. Barring knowing someone, probably continuing to work on the extension and promoting so it becomes popular it is probably the best way to get their attention.

Also kind of thought that. But also thought that if their HR staff is as slow to respond as their support staff, I'll have 10,000 downloads by the time anyone sees my resume.

Either way, I'll start putting something together and try to put it out there when the time is right. ;)

My opinion (devaluing the paper it's been printed on since 19XX):

Having plenty of interviewing experience and some experience on the hiring side of things as well, I believe the hardest hurdle is simply getting noticed, and becoming the candidate that the staff talk about. Enhanced Steam is definitely your ticket for getting noticed at Valve. That said, I think you can easily milk more publicity that would certainly help.

Pretty obvious but worth stating...
You could build up some more user base by posting around in some more forums, SPUF, AnandTech, etc.
When you feel it's reasonably polished, contact appropriate writers at ArsTechnica, Joystiq, etc.
