The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.

i have never played CS before, is the release of this new patch a good place to jump in or should I not even bother because I will get raped?
now if i buy a title thats mac + pc i cant play it on both at the same time right?
Only one account can be online at a single time. If that's what you're asking. Depends on the game whether you need to be logged into Steam or not and it has stuff like LAN capabilities.

Now or later, doesn't really matter, the core game isn't changed, but as someone pointed out above, play styles might change because of stat tracking or achievement hunting.

Maybe it would be best to play now before all those changes roll out. Getting raped, though, like all FPS, it's a lot about knowing the maps. So you might get owned at first, and once you start learning the maps, you'll do better.

Correct. It's just like normal, you can only be logged into your steam account from one computer at a time.

However, you could put Steam into offline mode on one of the computers and still access the games. You just wouldn't be able to play any MP games or get any of the stat tracking.

EDIT: Whoops, kilm got to it before me.

Wait for the inevitable sale with the update, and if you're good at FPS you'll be fine at CS.

Rockstar sells you pirated games.

The entire gaming industry are continuously fighting a war on piracy, needless to say why. Suprisingly, gaming giants Rockstar have controversially used a cracked copy of Max Payne 2 as a retail version through Steam.

maxpayne2.png

Coded by the infamous and prevelant cracking team, MYTH, this was created as a pirate copy. I do not condone pirating games, but what went through the heads of Rockstar as they sold their loyal customers a pirated version of the game?

I assume they do this because it's easier to steal a cracked version of their own game - paradox I know - than compile a new version without DRM. Talk about lazy!

YEah, saw it on kotaku. I just dont know if i should laugh or cry.
Its like with the microsoft thing when they used a pirated version of soundforge or whatever it was.

I just wish it was activision so i could give them more crap :p

You will most likely get raped. But don't let that stop you from trying it; in any multiplayer game, the first-timer will be pretty much torn apart. I'd start gaining experience now though, so that when they start recording stats you won't have horrific numbers.
"Now there's a chance this is just a prank from some Rockstar programmer, perhaps playing off the trouble Ubisoft ran into in 2008, when a no-CD hack from piracy group Reloaded was used in an official update to Rainbow 6: Vegas 2. Or it could just be a lazy programmer. If the tool exists that gets the job done faster than creating a new one, why not use it? Of course, speaking out against piracy becomes a problem when you use the products of piracy in your official releases, but surely this won't upset anyone at all, right?
We've reached out to Rockstar for comment on the similarities between the two files, and will update should we receive a response."

So, there's that.

Granted, Rockstar also said about GTA:San Andreas that the Hot Coffee stuff was the work of malicious hackers before it was revealed in the console versions right? Salt, grains, taking, etc.

Looking to download my first Steam game, and had a couple of questions that I thought you guys might be able to answer. Browsed their knowledge base this morning, and couldn't find my answers:

1) Can I download a game on one computer, and transfer it to another (say, via a usb flash drive) without having to download it on the second computer? Data limits on my home computer stink :(

2) Do all games allow offline mode? If not, am I going to experience any lag while playing if I have a satellite connection? I average like 1900ms ping times (bandwidth itself isn't a problem, just response times)

I think that should do it for now. Thanks.

Anyone else have this problem?

When I try to load Bejeweled 2 (purchased from Pop Cap, not Steam so being accessed as a shortcut) I get an error "invalid line parameter -changedir"

I can load the game fine on its own and I can load Peggle as a shortcut just fine. So it is only that one title that won't run through Steam. Weird, right?

1. yes

2. Most games. For instance, Counterstrike offline, no. Half Life offline, yes. If you lag in other games, you'll lag in Steam games.

Should we have a Steam sticky in the deals forum?

Then you would have to have something like Amazon DotD stickied, XBL Deal of the Week, so on and so forth. Seems like it's just reserved for Sunday ads and Amazon gift cards.

Counter Strike does work in offline mode.

You mean the server browser or playing with bots?
Lan? Doesn't count
LAN = Local Area Network.

Okay I'll spell it out for you. You can go into offline mode and still access LAN servers. In fact you HAVE TO do that in order to play multiplayer games through LAN without an internet connection.

Don't bother with that cat. He's has no RL friends to enjoy LAN games with. He's just looking to start a rant.
Those are all reasons, not facts. The article isn't written in an arrogant way or anything either. it's just an editorial piece - a guy stating his opinions. I didn't mind it. ~ ~
yeah reasons and opinions, but I wouldn't think of them good for anyone.

Apple would destroy Steam. Valve wouldn't be Valve no more.

I don't think anyone would willingly want this.

I have a hard time seeing it happen. I cannot see any benefit in apple acquiring valve/steam other then apple would have a competitor less when it comes to gaming.

What i fear would happen is that apple makes it OSX only, which probably is the same what microsoft would have done except that they would make it xbox exclusive.

Then again, this is only speculations. I doubt that Gabe and the rest of the guys at valve is that stupid to sell it to anyone but if it happens... the nerdrage.... oh the nerdrage... you would be wise to stay of the internet for a while then.

I'm pretty bummed by the fact that L4D and L4D2 aren't available for Mac yet. I'm pretty sure I remember Valve saying it would be one of the games available at launch. :(
The performance difference between Windows and Mac in Portal makes me lol.

Ugh, this might be my 3rd re-edit for this.

So, I finally read the article, and it did mention the difference in software drivers as a key reason on the difference in performance and image quality. The article is right in pointing out that Apple haven't really seen their own machines as being a gaming powerhouse, and the way that the software side of things handle APIs and whatnot is a clear indicator. I think someone already mentioned the superior quality in running the games in Bootcamp vs. Mac OSX native. Time will tell if Apple would take another page in the PC end, and start releasing optimized drivers for openGL or something. Maybe Steam could take the ball and patch the games for optimization, ala Blizzard (see WoW patches for the Mac OS).

Here's a game to watch out for:

Nuclear Dawn

Nuclear Dawn is the first game to offer a full FPS and RTS experience without crippling or diluting either side of the game.
Supports Steam Achievements, anti-cheat, controller, co-op, etc.

Comes out in October. Looks like a must-have to me... Though I'll probably wait till Steam's holiday sale.

Sega Week this week.

Bundle with all their games/dlc for $89.99

Game sale each day of the week. AvP is 50% off today, $24.99

Sounds like a week I can skip... I've already got the Total War games I want, and Sega has nothing else on PC that interests me.

Agreed, only TW game I don't have is Napoleon, if it is $20 or under I'll bite on it. But I have everything else they offer that I want. Only other exception would be the Sega All Star Racing but I wont buy that unless it is 75% off due to no online.

does anybody have universe at war?
i was going to grab it but im seeing some comments in the steam forums about issues working with win7.
can anybody comment?

That game crashes on Vista and Windows 7 CONSTANTLY. I would site 1 article for you but google has many links to forums of ppl with the same complaint.

Google: Universe At War + Errors/Crashes

A friend of mine bought that game for cheap (less than $10) from a local store and he constantly complains about it crashing on him randomly on Windows 7.

i see a lot of people saying if you start the game and then patch you have to completely start over youll experience the constant crashing.
the other issue involves windows live related crashes. it seems to happen across xp/vista/7

The only other Sega game I really want on Steam is Sega Rally Revo, and that is like, the one thing that isn't in the pack. Oi. Hope it gets an individual discount.

Also, I wonder if they'll use this as an opportunity to finally launch Sega Classics on Steam? Maybe this is leading into that.

Not to be a dick but is it really that important to run a popcap game through steam?

Is it that important to run Steam? Hell shouldnt you be reading a book rather than being on this website?

Steam provides a heck of a benefit, why not use it for whatever games you like?

I launch absolutely all of my games through Steam too. But if there was some kind of problem launching a particular game, I'd just use a desktop shortcut for that game.
Not to be a dick but is it really that important to run a popcap game through steam?
I am not a PC gamer. I'm trying to get into Steam as a convenient place to run my games and if I'm only going to occasionally be able to run my shortcuts though there then I won't do it at all.

Plus I really hate having a PC problem that I can't figure out myself. Part of finding the solution to this problem is knowing that there is a solution.

Not all games will be working 100% through STEAM. The games that you get through STEAM will be or should be working with no problem.

If you have games that are not on STEAM but want a convenient way of getting to them instead of the desktop icon and/or start menu try this...

RocketDock

RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha blended application launcher. It provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and organization. With each item completely customizable there is no end to what you can add and launch from the dock.
Now with added Taskbar support your minimized windows can appear as icons on the dock. This allows for better productivity and accessibility.

Megazell's Comment - Lately, I've been getting PMs about how to handle all of the games in a easy to use fashion. Personally, I use RocketDock. It's a 3D/Animated bar that you can customize to however you like. There are mods and add on for it for what you need. I have my dock setup with my gamepads so that the gamepads work like a remote so that I can game from my bed or couch with no problem. Check it out! :)
On average I have 20k games ready to play and a great many of them are not on STEAM or work well with STEAM. So I have this 3D bar (actually mine is a dial) with some nice mods on it to make my desktop look like something from the future. Easy to use and pretty to look at.

I use RocketDock for all my games as well. If I add a game to Steam, I'll make the shortcut for it and plop it right into the Dock. Pretty slick way of organizing/launching games and keeping the Steam overlay.

I also use Stardock's ObjectDock for all other applications (itunes, avast, nero, firefox, etc) on the left. My desktop hardly has any icons on it and it looks super clean. Hell, I don't even use wallpapers. Just an amusing pic or comic that changes every now and then on a black background.

Back on topic, I was reading in the Lead & Gold forums and they said that dedicated servers are now in external testing and that there is a free weekend in the works. It's just up to Valve when it's done. However, they don't know if there will be a discount to go along with it. I don't recall many games that have a free weekend NOT getting at least a few bucks knocked off. We'll see.
