The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.

Not a Mac user, but it lists in the Orange Box that Team Fotress 2 is coming soon. The Orange Box is on sale for 21 bucks also. If you do not have the Orange Box, please buy it. I still find it to be worth 30 dollars alone just for Team Fortress 2.

Been playing Half Life 2 on my old PC again after the new graphics update. I noticed it had better lighting, higher quality textures, and motion blur. Now... Where is Episode 3?
They did? I knew they had gotten achievements and steam cloud (which is super awesome in itself), but didn't know that! Looks like I'll be playing through them again in the next little bit.
i noticed half life and episode 1 doign some downloads. im guessing that was the update.
ill have to check it out. achievements are fun.
what is steam cloud? (mac user here)
basically saves are stored with steam. you can access your profile and pick up where you left off from other computer. the cross platform cloud means between mac and pc obviously.

Hey Face****... Have you considered other usernames and avatar images? I'm sure crap is very important to you, but I just can't believe it's the most significant thing in your life. You must have other interests or qualities besides fecal humor.
Don't forget that HL2 and ep1 got ep2 graphics with the update, now might be a good time to play HL2 over again.
Yes! I win! I have had Episode 1 since it launched and Episode 2 since the Orange Box launched and I haven't played either! Ridiculously old backlog wins again!
what is steam cloud? (mac user here)
Backs up your save games/user options to the Steam server as opposed to locally.

I still can't believe I get that FOR FREE on Steam and I pay for XBL and don't get such an awesome feature.
HL2 is a little glitchy, but looking better than ever.
I can't get past the loading screen because none of the menus ever come up... even if I hit escape nothing loads. I looked quickly late last night and I think it has something to do with loading Tacoma fonts but couldn't decipher the exact fix. Kind of an odd, though crippling, mishap on Valve's part.

I might be wrong, but I think they had that problem with Portal when they released it for the Mac (menus not coming up, etc). From what I can tell, seems they've quickly fixed problems like that for the Mac versions of their games (unless there are other Mac specific game crippling bugs I don't know about). I wouldn't be surprised if you'd be able to play today or tomorrow. Still sucks that you can't play now though.

Hey turd (lol, I'm just calling you by your name!) I saw they released a patch for the Mac version:

  • Fixed crash on launch (Mac)
  • Fixed main menu not rendering on 10.5.8 when anti-aliasing is enabled (Mac)

Did that fix your problem at all?

Hey Duke! ;)

I checked for the update based on your post and indeed, problem solved. Awesome news. Thanks for the heads-up.

I've also had some really bad jumpy lag-like issues with Sam and Max #301... makes it unplayable. Thought maybe it was because my Mac Book Pro is a good 3 years old. Anyone else having problems with it?

Awesome Weekend deal with Warhammer DoW2 Gold Edition

I can not recommend these games enough.

DoW2 has a demo on steam as well I believe.

Glad to hear it!

Not sure about the Sam & Max problem. You might check the Sam & Max Steam forums. See if anybody else is having that issue. Link

QFT. Awesome deal for an awesome game.

It's nice that they put the individual games on sale for $15 each too, just in case you already own DoW2. I might wait until Chaos Rising is $10 or less though. I'm moving in a few days and probably shouldn't spend money on games.

Sweet! Bought 2 copies of DoW 2. Glad I waited since that got me the expansion pack for the same price that the base game was on sale for last time.

Beat Hazard has been updated to include local multiplayer (cooperative and competitive)! An awesome game just keeps getting better.

Also...

Alien Breed: Impact is the latest in the Alien Breed series from developer Team 17 (Worms). It's a sci-fi shooter that seems to be inspired by Alien Syndrome (and of course Aliens). Impact is an enhanced version of the XBLA game (and it supports the Xbox 360 controller). It's also coming to PS3.

The game comes out on June 3 for $14.99, but you can preorder it for the mild discount of $13.49. There is also a free multiplayer demo available right now.

  • Alien Breed is back! - An action-packed mix of arcade-shooter, survival-horror and tactical weapons upgrades and customization.
  • Epic single-player story mode - The single-player campaign mode that follows the narrative of the game through five huge and challenging environments.
  • Single-player free-play mode - A single-player challenge mode – beat your high score on a previously completed campaign mission.
  • Two-player co-operative play mode - Work together to defeat the alien horde across three specifically customized maps.
[*]Additional Steam online features - Quick Match, Create Game, Friends Lists, Voice Chat, Leader-boards and Co-operative Achievements.
[*]FREE TRIAL - The “Prologue” sample section – a specifically designed introduction to the game; play in either single-player or two-player online co-operative mode.
[*]NEW – Upgrades shop - Search fallen comrades and lockers to accumulate cash, and then tactically spend it on weapons/kit upgrades in the shop.
[*]NEW - Enemies - Re-imagined and improved Alien Breed enemies.

There's some exclusive bullshit if you preorder Alien Breed, an in-game digital comic or something. Nothing too crucial to the actual game, I'm sure.

Also, when the Alien Breed demo went live last night, they accidentally left the in-game debug menus in. Some neat stuff, including overtly fun stuff like cheats, and some neat under-the-hood stuff, like enemy AI status readouts, path data displays, a screenshot mode, et cetera. They've already patched it out, unfortunately, so you're SOL if you wanna try it, but I archived the game files before that, and I'm still having fun with it.
Alien Breed looks awesome! Been looking for a good game similar to Loaded (PS1) for a good long time.
Why not try the original Alien Breed games?

I posted an Alien Breed remake titled 'Alien Breed: Obliteration' on my 'Free And Legal PC Games' list.

Those that are new to this franchise should give it a spin.

That new version of it looks good too.

I am getting tired of getting Mac updates for Portal and Half Life 2 when I am playing them on Windows. I am going to be really scared and see what happens when Team Fortress 2 comes out for OSX. How many glitches are there going to be when we have both OSX and Windows platforms going up against each other online?

Can somebody tell me how I can get my 360 controller to play my steam games? I am running Vista and I have the 360 usb attachment for windows. Are there only some games that support the controller? Why can't I figure this out?

How is this STEAM related?

Also, that question has been asked before on this forum and solved - Search is your ally.

Midweek Madness is pretty good deal.

Neocore Complete Pack includes:

Crusaders: They Kingdom Come
King Arthur The Roleplaying Wargame
2 King Arthur DLC

Total is $18.70

You can get each of the listed above separately as well for 66% off.

King Arthur is a great game, there is a demo of it on Steam.

You really have no idea how to read. Such a useless post, troll.

Yes, some games will natively detect the 360 controller and configure itself automatically. Others you might have to do some tweaking, so really you have to go to whatever game's official site and forums for specific answers. In most cases, you can just use a program like xpadder to configure the the keys to your game pad.

Actually, I pretty sure I am quite awesome. Besides my question was still valid. If he had a problem with a specific STEAM game and his controller...It would have been more fitting. Since he did not his question was very broad and was more of a X-Box 360 controller issue show horned into that really should have been Googled and/or searched on here. I'm just very rude to lazy people. It feeds my Gromits.

With all due respect, go fuck yourself.

I didn't know that I needed to configure the controller to each game, you assume that I knew that and are being a prick about it.

It's got nothing to do with Steam though. If you said, "I'm new to using computers" or "playing games on computers," then you'd have a better excuse. Look at that, you're making me side with MegaZell now. And don't get snarky when you're the one who asked a goofy question and I was nice about it.

Regardless, of what little you did know you did not bother using search and have proven once again that high schools have failed.

It has everything to do with Steam to me. I have a controller I want to use with Steam and frankly I don't know how. What I'm beginning to understand is that I shouldn't be looking to configure it with Steam but rather with individual Steam games. That is where (I think) I was going wrong before.

A game like Portal has an option to configure a gamepad, and Torchlight does not so now I guess I can assume that Torchlight doesn't support a gamepad.

You're sadly mistaken if you think I'm insulted by you. Maybe I'm taking it out on you, but I feel like I've just had it with people in forums offering no insight and just bitching. The fact that I didn't use the search to find the answer (assuming it was there) really bothers you enough that you need to make a post about it? What on earth makes you think I care if you're bothered by it?

Actually, all games on the PC can be played by gamepad - Whether they support gamepads or not.

Behold and bear witness to the power of search, reading and fundamental logic....

Software Spotlight

JoyToKey

This software is a keyboard emulator for joysticks.
It converts joystick input into keyboard input (and mouse input).

Use it when you want to control an application with joysticks that doesn't support joystick input. If you wish, you can control even Word, Excel, etc. with joysticks!

Megazell's Comment - Sometimes I take for granted all the little programs I dl and have installed to make PC gaming easier. This is such a program. I been using this one and variations of it for years. It helps a lot when you have games that should have gamepad support but don't. Must have for all PC gamers.

Download it here - http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey English Version.htm

See, now you're getting it. Torchlight definitely does not support a controller. I personally wouldn't enjoy using the type of program that MegaZell suggested (though IMO they're fine for less mouse-oriented games). I'd just play that particular game with the mouse.

Steam games (i.e. games that are sold on Steam) aren't inherently different from any other PC games. Steam mostly sells the same games that you can buy from anywhere. Some games have special Steam features like Achievements or Steam Cloud, but control options aren't unique to games sold by Steam. Basically, instead of the way you have been using the phrase "Steam games," it would have been more proper to say "PC games."

Because that is my 72nd time posting that info on this forum alone.

New ppl really should use search. CAG is not a brand new forum. Chances are topics of this nature are covered....It's just better e-etiquette to search and try not to double post in a forum so that new and different topics stay in the focus.

Only issue I have had lately is with some Windows live games that i thought supported the gamepad but my dumbass cant figure out how to get it working .

I know this is the steam thread but I only said it due to the above gamepad conversation. Personally i love steam and hate steam at the same time. Bastards cost me alot of money since i have gotten more into pc gaming.

Screw the both of you. You guys suck.

Kidding, of course.

A suggestion to all: instead of flaming someone for asking a question about Steam that you think is inappropriate, why not take the opportunity to teach them something? For instance, you could let them know about the search function and how to use it to get the answer. Teach a man to fish and all that.

Megazell would just go apeshit about it.

Even then, the search function isn't some perfect answer teller. You still get a shit ton of useless threads which may or may not have an actual answer.

Easier for everyone if someone does ask a question is to just answer it and be done with it. Telling someone to search doesn't necessarily do that.

The main problem with the question was he asked how does he get it to work with Steam games which is an extremely broad question as there are over a thousand games on Steam. If he meant Valve games, that's a much easier answer because it's far more specific.

But don't let me bring logic in to nerd raging, that ruins all the fun.
