This is a bit late, but what's with people giving Piven a hard time over the whole "SummerFest" thing? It's not like Lilian, J.R., or even Vince, etc. have never made mistakes on-air.

I don't think it was a mistake.

Because it highlighted the fact that he doesn't know anything about wrestling.

I like Eric Young's new look.

Going by how Jarrett has just disappeared in recent weeks there may be some truth about the Karen rumors.

Yeah, EY's new look is great for him, makes him look much larger and goes a long way towards taking him seriously.

20+ man brawl going on more than 15 minutes now. Best brawl I've seen in a very long time.

Don West - "I'm of a mind to take off my headset and go get me some!"

What an insane show that was - and not for altogether good reasons. The OMGBIGBRAWL! looked great in promos, but came off poorly by comparison on the actual show due to a combination of things. DW and Tenay YELLING ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED didn't help, nor did the war weaving back and forth from a supposed street fight (with clothing rags and boxes of packing peanuts) into a choreographed fake wrestling match whenever the Guns were on offense. The idea on paper of some of this stuff (THE GUNS UNITE WITH DANIELS TO TAKE ON THE WORLD ELITE!) was sound, but hurt by the execution (...and do so with phoney-looking moves!); same with Brother Ray trapping Booker under a table and hitting it with a chair - nice idea, but Ray's slow-mo chairshots destroyed any belief that damage could actually be done with the shots. Having guys just come out after it without a scratch on them hurt, too.

The positioning of it was also pretty damaging - right in the middle of the show, during a match, resulting in the match being instantly forgotten, meaning nothing, and putting this massive brawl in a position where it's going to come before half of the broadcast - which means that a few hundred things happen after it. It would have been much better at the end of the show, where it would have stood out better and still fit in with the Whatever the Faces are Called Now group-MEM feud. Instead, the show ended with YET ANOTHER BRAWL - one that paled in comparison to the one earlier in the show...so why have it? Why not just have the big, epic brawl close the show?

Match-wise, there was nothing special on this show except for the Knockouts tag, which was great thanks to Alissa and Sarita. Those two need to be feuding for the title soon, and as much as I love TBP's act, work-wise, both of those two are better than either member of that team, and TBP doesn't need the belt - they'd get as much use out of their own Million Dollar Belt-ish thing. Morgan-AJ was fine, but way too short - especially for something building up a number 1 contender for the world title, and seemed like a retread of last week's match with a couple different moves and a different winner. Sting-Magnus was okay, but forgettable, and it seemed like a waste to build this as a huge return when he's been gone for just a few weeks.

However, TNA did do a good job of setting up matches for the PPV, which is more than I can say WWE's done for Summerslam. Tonight, they set up numerous title matches, including what should be a great Joe-Cide match for the X Title, and the Steel Asylum for the number one contendership for that belt, and hyped the debut of Elijah Burke as well. It was definitely a good effort as far as building up the PPV, but as a show, it was disappointing. I also find it impossible to take World Elite seriously due to their stupid backwards E logo, and EY's olive-green tights don't help things, either.

Quotes -
Tenay - Tonight, STING RETURNS TO THE RING…against Brutus Magnus of the British Invasion!
Angle - Last week, a GREAT GREAT INJUSTICE WAS DONE! At the end of the show, Foley allegedly won the Legends title from Nash! I SAID ALLEGED, TWO THINGS WENT WRONG - ONE, STING WAS UP IN THE CROWD CAUSING A DISTRACTION! WHEN HE LET THE LIGHTS GO OUT IN THE ARENA, AND WHEN THEY CAME UP, LASHLEY GOT TO THE RING AND CAUSED ALL THE DAMAGE! LASHLEY WAS NOT THE LEGAL MAN, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE CORNER!
DW - GREAT POINT!
Angle - MICK WAS IN MY ANKLE LOCK READY TO TAP OUT! Lashley wasn’t in his corner, therefore, the match was null and void. I talked to the TNA board of directors and they agreed that he match was a sham, but we agreed to let the outcome stand on one condition - that Nash get a shot at Hard Justice! WHERE HE WILL WIN THE TITLE AND END MICK FOLEY’S CAREER! YOU SEE, MICK FOLEY, STING, LASHLEY - THEY DON’T LIKE TO PLAY BY THE RULES! They’ve forced me, as the Godfather of the Mafia, to protect my family, which has forced me to strike a deal! (World Elite comes out) I just want to say, Eric, that it’s an honor and a privilege to do business with you.

Tenay - OH WE’VE TALKED ABOUT THE UNWRITTEN RULE ABOUT NOT USING THE PILEDRIVER DUE TO THE RISK OF INJURY!
Roode - If there’s anyone here who knows Eric Young better, it’s me. We grew up together - went up and down the roads together. This isn’t about what he did to us - he forgets when he begged for his job from Jeff Jarrett, and we both did. Jeff gave us the shot. Eric Young is running rampant and I’m not gonna stand for it! I’LL BE DAMNED IF YOU’RE GONNA DICTATE OUR FUTURE!
Ray - You think you’re pissed at EY, but no one’s got more reason to be mad than me and my brother! MY BROTHER DEVON HAD THE MATCH!

I'm close to the NC border so I might pick one of those up. I love how they call it the "education lottery" to soothe the soul of those who think gambling is a sin.

BTW, I don't know where that Serita woman in TNA came from but she can really move in the ring. I'm glad Melissa Anderson (Alyssa Flash) is getting more time to wrestle too.
I saw that, too. I thought "education lottery" was one way to combat the stigma of the lottery as a "stupid tax."
The lottery has continued to generate controversy among North Carolina constituents upset with teacher layoffs who believed the lottery would have made up the difference.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Education_Lottery#cite_note-N.26O-3

Interesting read.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Education_Lottery

I knew it wasn't going to be the savior of education. Our county consolidated schools despite the Virginia Lottery.

And to keep this wrestling themed, the WWE Draft Lottery sucks.

Yeah, back on topic, I suppose (thanks for the link).

I thought the TNA brawl last night was really exciting. I don't know what built up to it - or didn't catch all of the thoughtful nuances of the story arcs that lead up to it (;)), but I did enjoy it.

Also enjoyed Eric Young v Chris Daniels. Forgive me if I don't have a 400-word diatribe about how I didn't like a backwards E or the color olive. FFS.

They're saying that the next couple of iMPACTS! are unfiltered Russo and whoevertheotherguyis... and, I have to say, you can notice the difference.

Dutch Mantell and Jarrett are corny.

Saywhahuh!? Are you not feeling well? I think the color worked with his different trunks and buzz cut as a stark contrast to his previous look to distinguish that the old EY is gone.

Like I said earlier, the brawl was really fun. I don't understand how someone could watch that and then just pick it apart and try to say "this was wrong, that was wrong...". It was meant to be energetic, exciting and chaotic and it accomplished exactly that. I'm not surprised to hear that Cornette was involved in coordinating it. It had a similar feel to a big brawl from many, many moons ago on Clash of the Champions between The Midnight Express and The Fantastics (The Fantastics!). That thing was all over the place, the crowd was completely into it and Jim Ross was calling it and sold it like a champ. You know it was good if it still sticks with me today.

Hmm, I may have to check out this brawl. Does TNA put Impact online to watch?

I also checked out the Hardy vs Morrison match from last week's Smackdown this morning. Very entertaining and was surprised to see Morrison dominate almost the entire thing. Which actually lead me to think, how much of an offense does Jeff Hardy actually have? He's got his couple of signature moves that get the crowd going and that's all I ever remember from his matches.

Last night actually; it's amazing what they let those ECW boys get away with. To the point though: How much of an offense does anyone in WWE have? Cena gets crap for having the five moves of doom, but if you look at it most of the roster has maybe four or five moves and a rest hold. They've also put on damn near the exact same tag match every time one's been booked for the past few years. Could be part of their mission to kill off tag team wrestling, though.

Why Cena gets shit for it and no one else does is beyond me.

Triple H is punch, spinebuster, knee lift, knee to face, and pedigree yet people don't care. Hogan didn't even have five moves. It was punch, bodyslam, and leg drop. Austin was punch, Thesz press, mudhole stomp in the corner, middle-finger elbow drop and stunner. Rock was punch, people's elbow, spinebuster, sharpshooter and rock bottom. It's the WWE style in most cases and not the wrestler.

I regards to Cena I wish he'd use the Throwback more often. It's a cool looking move.

Ahhhhhh fuuucckkkk.....I remember I made arragements to see a lady on the coast today. Well, there goes seeing TNA tonight.....I was going to just buy at the door.

She called me up and I couldn't deny her. Then, when I hung up, I remembered what I was really going down there for.

Damn

Rock also had the DDT and the Samoan Drop.

...Just sayin', is all. :whistle2:#

EDIT: Isn't the Throwback a non-top rope version of the Blockbuster? I like that move, too.

To be fair to Stone Cold, his neck and spinal injury really limited his moveset. We all know he could really go back in his Hollywood Blondes days, but he was never the same after he took that piledriver from Owen.

And as usualy, I was half-watching Impact, half-doing something else. I saw the brawl, but didn't notice what kicked it off. It was exciting and something different, and I hope they remember it happened next week.

Back from USMC OCS (well, tomorrow I will be), I missed you guys and bitching about wrestling on TV. Anyhow, I'll be watching RAW like a sheep.

Because most of Cena's matches are

1) Somebody kicking the shit out of him
2) moves 1-2 from the five moves of doom
3) enemy comeback
4) moves 3-5
5) Cena wins/Cena loses or
6) STF, Cena wins

Say what you will about the other guys but they are good enough to mix up the spots and sell enough to make the matches interesting. Cena doesn't and he doesn't sell worth a shit. As soon as it's time to win, he is completely back to the same condition he was in before the match.

His matches are as boring and uninteresting as his character is.

That's because he has to BEAT THE ODDS. :hot:

Yeah I also agree that everyone is giving Piven a bunch of shit about the summerfest thing. I was watching Jimmy Fallon last night, and he put over the WWE and was a topic for the show. They even showed pictures. Dr. Ken will be on tonight, I'm sure he'll be putting it over also.

Wow. The wwe creative team is coming up with some great names lately. First, Abraham Washington and now Slam Master J. Plus it gives the wwe with yet another wrestler with the frog splash as a finisher. Who needs the starship pain when you've got the frog splash.

If you've seen any of the Word Up skits he's been doing with Cryme Tyme over the past two months, the name makes perfect sense. Crap on them for Abraham Washington sure, but not this one.

Damn, Punk was on fire tonight.

"People who smoke cigarettes...are stupid!"
"Fix him up so I can break him again!"
"Go check on your poster boy, Teddy!"

EDIT:

In addition to the main-event (which saw a 539,000 viewership increase for Shaquille O'Neal's gig as a special enforcer), Triple H vs. Cody Rhodes was a strong performer for WWE. It added 467,000 viewers. Jack Swagger vs. Evan Bourne was also a surprisingly solid draw--it bumped the viewership up by 219,000.

The Chavo Guerrero-Hornswoggle segment sent 394,000 viewers to other channels. Interestingly, despite featuring John Cena and being the final bout in the "Beat the Clock" series, the Cena-Miz match lost 87,000 viewers.

That makes me so happy

I just finished watching Smackdown. Good show, and CM Punk definitely was on. Jericho vs. JTG was a surprisingly good match. It sucks that JTG's win will mean nothing in the long run, but I guess they had to figure out some way to give Cryme Tyme a victory in the buildup to SummerSlam, and this was the only way.

Speaking of SummerSlam, I'm very excited about the TLC match. The finish to this title match was really weird with Matt counting the fall, but whatever. I've seen Money in the Bank in person, but never TLC. Now it looks like that will change. :)
Before last week's beatdown on Hardy, I can't remember the last time there was blood on WWE programming - free TV or PPV.
Particularly on SD. They would change the shot to B&W when showing a recap from Raw or a PPV that had blood. I remember a few times when someone accidentally started bleeding on SD and the director cut to a wide shot for the remainder of the match. I've was watching SD on Hulu for most of the summer and those are edited to cut away whenever anyone was hit with any kind of foreign object (chair, belt, briefcase, etc.). When Jericho jumped Rey when he was wearing his mask he kept throwing him into the barrier and stomping him. Hulu didn't show any of that.
Breaking News: Ricky Ortiz has been released from the WWE.
Mh, just as well. He never really got over with the crowd, and it was all downhill once thy turned him hel for no good reason.

I think he may have had moderate success if they'd let him use his Atlas DeBone gimmick from OVW. If not, hey, at least I could have heard "Jive Soul Bro" every week :bouncy:

While Johnson speaks positively towards WWE in the media, the reality is he wants to disassociate himself with his former employer and still harbors some bad feelings over the way they allowed his contract to expire at the end of 2004.
Did I miss something?
Breaking News: Ricky Ortiz has been released from the WWE.
No surprise... He was terrible, anyway.

Has anyone picked up any of these?

l_12c3eda45bea4a8facccc4442d6167d1.jpg

The one I stopped at had Edge, Triple H, and Cena. No Kelly Kelly or Undertaker.

EDIT: Hey JJ, my friend just got our TNA Bound For Glory tickets, 7th row ringside, center. Should be a night of awesome matches spoiled by terrible, overbooked finishes. I can't wait!

Ricky Ortiz was never given a chance.

He's far better than his televised body of work would ever let you believe.

Don't get me wrong - he was never going to be a world champion, but if you look at the WWE roster on the whole, it's not like he was leagues worse than, say...Slam Master J, or R-Truth, or Dolph Ziggler. Having seen plenty of "Atla$ Da Bone" in OVW, he had a great look, a boatload of charisma, and as much wrestling talent as is required by WWE these days. He was never handed the metaphorical "ball" WWE likes to talk about.

EDIT: Although having seen Rob Terry in the ring during Thursday's Impact, I can see why WWE let him go. Guy's a fuckin' adonis in terms of his physique, but I don't know that I've seen a more clueless wrestler in my time. Keep him in the Diesel role TNA, and don't you dare put him back in the ring.

Whatever the reason, I just never enjoyed his in ring work. He showed signs of promo skills, but his character didn't give him much to work with. The Ricky-O rally towel? Get that shit out of here.

Who has the next topic? We're almost done here. I haven't made one in a while, but I have no idea who to name it after. Maybe just a SummerSlam topic? Then again, it'd be done before the PPV got here.
Has anyone picked up any of these?

I picked up a Kelly Kelly one, gonna stop by 7-11 on Monday to pick up another one.

After watching Greg Valentine and Roddy Piper's chain match, "The Hammer" needs a topic. Dude was built like a house, and still put together a solid career despite being forced to dress up like Fat Elvis.

I stop by the gym almost everyday at a 7-11 for a drink so I dont mind. And yes, they are reusable. I still have my cups back when they were doing the Halo 3 promotion.
