Ubisoft threatens to sue Something Awful over Jade Raymond webcomic

Ahh, the classic "GRRRRR you didn't read what I said so u r wrong." How anticlimactic.
No; it's not who I am and it's not how I do things. If you don't like it, you can not waste your time with me
Ya know, I say the same thing to people who like to bitch at me, who vainly thinking that I care what they have to say about me, but since they pretty much never comply, I see no reason to pay you the same courtesy. Sorry, man, it's the internets.
Why don't you make another thinly-veiled homophobic signature, while you're at it?
What the hell is homophobic about cigarettes and twigs?!?

Bleh, it's better than using my signature to house another CAG's positive comments about me to help massage my e-go every time you see it.

I can see you now, huddled in front of your monitor, tearing your hair out over people like me not surrendering to your tl;dr essays and singing your praises as a great philosopher and humanitarian, softly repeating to yourself "I always make sense, I always make sense, I always make sense, I always make sense..."

People are defending this? Say you took this comic out in public. Would you really show it to anyone? I can't even think of any friends I'd be proud to show this to. This shit should be erased.
Ahh, the classic "GRRRRR you didn't read what I said so u r wrong." How anticlimactic.
What it is is your "I have nothing to say but I'm going to type words anyway to convey the mere appearance of a response" quality of post.
What it is is your "I have nothing to say but I'm going to type words anyway to convey the mere appearance of a response" quality of post.
Awesome. Glad to see I have you down to my level.

Thank god society has you to solve all of it's problems, myke. Go back to ending the killing in Darfur, or ending workplace inequality, or whatever it is you do all day, because, no matter how many words you write, you've done nothing to convince anyone who didn't already dislike the cartoon that they should suddenly start doing so.

Regardless of how I felt they promoted the game, the shit is tasteless. Hide it behind parody if you must, but no one can honestly mutter that they are proud to be a gamer when this shit exists.

When I showed it to my wife (she draws 'em funny comix pictures too), she immediately said "Chugworth huh? People just read that crap for the boobs anyway"

As long as people recognize that "free speech" and "funny" are two very different arguments, and that many fools seem to be conflating the two together in order to justify their own pitiful senses of humor and biting criticism, then my job is done here.

On that note, the last word's all yours, toots. I got some 360 to play.
Regardless of how I felt they promoted the game, the shit is tasteless. Hide it behind parody if you must, but no one can honestly mutter that they are proud to be a gamer when this shit exists.
Wow. Then I guess you've been ashamed to be a gamer since, uh, forever, because that's how long this sort of stuff has existed. This cartoon wasn't the genesis of calling game developers, male of female, any of the worst names you can imagine.

You must be downright ashamed to be human, if that's your mindset.
As long as people recognize that "free speech" and "funny" are two very different arguments,
Yeah, because whether something is funny or not is totally something that you can argue with someone about, and with enough effort, change anyone's mind about.

Only you would try that, myke, only you.
and that many fools seem to be conflating the two together in order to justify their own pitiful senses of humor and biting criticism, then my job is done here.
Mykevermin®: Better than You, Since 1936™ (haha I dunno how old you are but you sure do sound like a geezer)

Really though, glad to see that all your bullshit thesis writing has once again justified for you your pitiful belief that your sensibilities and sense of humor are worth more or are more valid than anyone else's, especially those of strangers from the internet. I just hope that you can get past relying on that for self-validation someday.

Conceited fuck.

Yawn.

And clearly I'm not discussing this exact situation of some prick taking a lame joke too far by mocking someone's ability and skill as a producer because of her breasts and implied sucking power. I'm just talking in vague terms. You know because every post on the internet totally applies to every situation ever.

But what's the point of trying to explain anything to you CoffeeEdge? I mean, you're totally open to other opinions of a situation and totally reasonable to analyzing a situation.

I'm sure glad you've got plenty of time to join several ignore lists today.

Good day.
I'm sure glad you've got plenty of time to join several ignore lists today.
Ahhh, ya see, that's my master plan!

I'm trying to get every single person on CAG to add me to their ignore list, and then, once everyone has done that and not a single soul can see my posts, I'm going to go into the Video Game Deals forum and post the best deal of all time, and truly have the last laugh.
Yes, I'd love to talk to her, and ask her why the AI in Assassin's Creed is such utter, boring-to-tears shit, and why they blew the stupid meta-story within the first five minutes when it would have been a lot more effective to hold out on it for a while. And also, while his music is great, is Tommy Tallarico really such an assclown in person?
Do you not understand that people have multiple dimensions to them? And that even if you dislike someone's work you can still respect them as a person? Or at least acknowledge that they're a human being worthy of respect? She isn't asking for all the attention that she's getting, and she certainly doesn't deserve low-lifes like you walking around defending something that vulgar and offensive. I'd love someone to draw a cartoon of your mother like that and circulate it online. What would you say to that?
I think CoffeeEdge is one of my favorite posters
QFT.

I don't really have a dog in this fight one way or another, but CoffeeEdge is a badass all the same.

I'd say that I may not agree with with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it.

That's what this is all about. I don't give a shit if you like this comic or not, but the people who are saying that it shouldn't exist, that's bullshit, and contemptuous of the very foundations of freedom of speech. It's the typical "freedom of speech, if I like it" mentality.

Regarding your idea regarding of a similar comic featuring my mother: Really, that'd be about as offensive as this comic of Jade Raymond is to me. Seeing as you have absolutely no personal information to base such a theoretical cartoon off of, it'd just be a random, baseless, generic "yer momma" joke. It might be upsetting if I was 8 years old, but, well, I'm not.

This is a very dangerous line of thought, and, to me, represents a level of conceitedness that scares me. One that has folks seeing themselves as the arbiters of what discourse should simply disappear. A scary thought if you take it to its conclusion.

Yes, if you show this to people in real life, you will elicit only negative reactions.

And that's all that's needed to keep this sort of crap in the land of anonymous internets.

well it's a bit hyperbolaic and I'm just ashamed that this crap is associated with my hobby of choice.

The problem with arguing with myke is he's usually right. I just try to keep it amicable when I go on a PS3 rant. ;)
So because I think the comic was funny, I hate women? Is that the general concensus?
Hatred is a specific term. What you have is more of a depraved indifference. Forces do indeed drive you to oppress women with your mind and stuff, but whether said forces are hatred, money, self-worth, a penis... Still not proven.

No. Rather, the implication is that your beliefs as to what constitutes socially acceptable satire are rooted in gender bias.

Homeless women used to beat me as a child...

"Depraved indifference." I like that!

Concise, to the point, and spot the fuck on. Would that I were capable of such parsimony. Well done.

So I guess the reason I find Garfield funny is that my beliefs as to what constitute socially acceptable satire are rooted in weight bias. It's so funny when that cat goes for that lasagna!

Not to mention the fact that I'd have found it equally as funny if someone drew a comic of Nintendo fans blowing Reggie. But then I guess that's gender bias too?

Do I have a sense of humor suited for the gutter? I sure do! But to somehow imply that my finding the comic funny has anything to do with the fact that it degrades women is just untrue.

Also how do you not see it making fun of the losers who drool over her just as much? Hell, here's one of them in the AC thread:
LOL silly cartoon I saw that Jade chick on Attack of the Show last week and I was like DAMN whatever she selling i'm buyin.... So yea I picked up Assassins Creed yesterday.... Picked it up half price thanks to Gamerush credit. Where do I sign up for the BJ? :D
Har Har Woman am Sex. Humor I am make!

So who's muff is Cliffy B diving since he's twice the whore that Jade is, as far as publicity time goes? Oh right, it's not degrading and funny when a Man does the business to a Woman.

So... anyone know when Jade Raymond first appeared on screen (when she begins promoting AC)? I think one of her first videos was her interviewing the people she worked with.
Not to mention the fact that I'd have found it equally as funny if someone drew a comic of Nintendo fans blowing Reggie. But then I guess that's gender bias too?
The humor would be in Reggie's being placed in what society at large would consider a feminized position. So yes, yes it is.

Wow, Rei. You hate fat peo... I'm sorry, your "beliefs as to what is sociall..." *Snicker*

Seriously, how do you say that with a straight face?

Would that I could live in the world of white knights and clear cut villains who oppress the Other with their own thoughts by the simple act of holding differing beliefs than my own...

no, no, no, don't try that "alternate perspective" witchcraft on us. there's only one way of looking at this, womanizer. never mind that the comic also satirizes nerdy men, who are also in the submissive position because their stereotypical lack of experience with women makes them sensitive to a pretty face and willing to fork over money.

witch hunts with a feminist perspective in mind are fun.

The irony of all of this is that originally, this might've been secluded only to Something Awful and a few internet sites. But now because of the legal move, this is spreading throughout the video game community like wildfire.

Once again, legal action succeeds in taking a small personal issue and blowing it up into a large embarrassment throughout its respective community. Jade must be thrilled.

She was a host on "The Electric Playground" (the longest-running TV show about videogames that I can remember) as early as 2004, if I recall correctly. I saw her way back then, and I thought she was annoying at the time, as well. So, I already disliked her, long before half the nerd population fell in love with her when she started hyping AC.
witch hunts with a feminist perspective in mind are fun.
Aren't they though? Almost as much fun as witch hunts over perceived racists.

They deny it, but it is Knight in Shining Armor Syndrome. They think that by fanatically defending womankind, and persecuting every stupid little thing, like this comic, that they'll totally get all the chicks.

Well said, I would never have seen this comic or the site had it not been for the reporting of the legal action, I'd imagine I'm not the only one.

haha i thought it was quite funny. not the portraying jade as a whore part but the nerds. come on. you got horny gamers jerking it to a magazine and a fat asian gamer (possibly running to jade) yelling out "PLEASE Jade! I wanna buy your game too!!! deparatly trying to get a blowjob since the only ones that ever touched his cock was himself. i honestly never paid attention to jade and her promoting AC. everyone needs to chill, its just a comic.

that's not what I was getting at at all. I'm not trying to knock or completely discredit myke or magus, I'm just saying the comic isn't a straight line-- they're right, it degrades a woman and it's an overdone, tasteless satire of Jade being the pretty face promoting the game. They're also right that someone could interpret this as "haw haw look at dat dumb bitch," which would be a manifest of feminist-centered concerns about the comic. Rei is claiming he doesn't see it that way, so that's what was up with my sarcastic comment.

On the other hand, the nerdy guys are portrayed as slobbering idiots. Maybe if they were macho, dominant men, I could agree that it's completely about demeaning Jade. But they aren't and it isn't-- it's a commentary on the reaction of the gaming community to an attractive, well-publicized woman in the game industry--gamers can't handle it. Look at any assassin's creed thread or forum on the web and I guarantee you'll find some Jade idolization.

The comic is a nice summary of what any discussion about Assassin's Creed is tainted with: "omg jade lol i wuld so do her lol"

I know I'm missing other points of possible interpretation, but fuck, it's the weekend and I'm not getting course credit for this.

Frankly, I'm flabbergasted at the response of the thread. Very few people here know what they're talking about and I'm at the brink of asking to lock this.

I like how this one portrays the rest of the team as Jade's peons (technically true, but still..):
