OOO I can't wait for the arcade, another board I post at from time to time has a really big Arcade and it's quite fun, also you get a nice little custom scrolling text by your name that says what games you have the high score in, it's very cool.
 
what I have never understood is why the "well known" members have never jumped ship to one of Defender's message boards. Gametour or the VGD board could have use some more action. Those places would have been prime fall out shelters and secret places to chat.

Yeah Punq, I haven't been around, but at least know that I was given the role of moderator with the statement that I could mod as little as I wanted.

It's kind of hard to do all that stuff and try to maintain some form of good grades in college, topped with the fact that I don't play as much games or watch as many DVDs as I used to.

Anyway I started playing poker on yahoo gaming and I'm addicted now. San Andreas got me hooked now I will need a visit to gambling anonymous pretty soon.

Gameplay is important but so is what you see and what its about. Its all part of the same package. The graphics enchance your ability to interact with your environment, hence enhancing the gameplay.

The story line creates the world for you to interact with. This is the context for the gameplay. If the game play suffers the game sucks. But great game play with terrible graphics and story line bring a 10 down to a 7.[/quote]

It wasn't off topic, I was just commenting on the gaming industry as a whole and how as it grows so will posts like these. This site has a great voice for this industry.

I think it sounds like a good idea, but I also think everyone should be able to see it, even if they can't post in it. Don't know if that's what is meant by the idea or not though.
 
Not sure how much my opinion counts, but this sounds like a bad idea to me.

The whole point of open message boards is to get more people communicating, sharing deals, etc. This goes in the opposite direction, at least for the 'cool kids'.

And I recall the membership and post count drives. Quantity quantity quantity! Well, Sturgeon's Law says that 90% of everything is crap, so of course out of 20k users there will be some non-productive people in there. You have to take them as well. If they're neutral, no harm done--if they're good, good--if they're bad, correct them or mod/ban them.

Who defines who's 'cool'? Post count? Post quality?
I have seen some people who are probably on the top of the 'We're Better than You Forum' list, post some nasty, evil things in various threads. Everybody can be a jerk sometimes. And some people may add a lot to a discussion, but aren't very 'memorable' so their names won't come up in the 'Who do we like' discusssion.

If you want a closed board, close it. No more free/easy signup. Or easy 'provisional' status, where anytime before your 50th post, your account can be closed with no notice if you raise too much trouble.

*Have the mods do some modding--if someone starts causing trouble, close their thread, delete their posts, whatever. A mod who's only on here ten minutes a week isn't much of a mod. I realize real life intrudes, but my understanding of being a mod is that you would 'help run the board.' You can't do much in that short a time.

*Have a 'trash' forum that's read-only, where the 'bad' posts get moved to [to show examples of what not-to-do, and have a history of what the bad posters have said.]

*Institute a 'strike' system, to go with post count; mods and owners can give users strikes, that are easily visible to them and others; after a certain number of strikes, their account is locked or turned read-only for a certain amount of time; after two lockouts, it's closed.

* Self-policing. Trolls want attention. Just ignore them, If someone comes here trollling, don't participate in their thread, turning it into a 25 page monstrosity. You're part of the problem then. Every 'Yeah, you suck too!' post hurts, rather than helps. If someone does something wrong out of ignorance, not cupidity, then coach/correct them, don't flame them, which I have seen happen too often.

If this private forum were created, most people in it would post most of their posts in it. That increases the crap ratio on the rest of the board. Which of course is what most newbies or would-be newbies see when they first luck onto the forum, so either it'll scare away decent people, or attract trolls/leeches/lusers, either of which would lower the 'first glance' opinion of CAG.
 
I agree to a degree to the above. We have to be careful that this website is for obtaining games at a better than market price not a club for the people that post the most.
 
Just an idea, but what would you guys think about a limit on the amount of posts you are allowed to make each day in the invite-only board (lets say 10 per user per day)? That way, it wouldn't diverge too much traffic away from the main boards, and members who aren't invited won't feel that they've missed out on too much without access to the usergroup.

So if the board does get made, I think it should be kept on the down low. I don't care if I get in or not. But either way I don't want to see people bitching about it existing. And if they don't know it exists then "they" can't bitch about it.

I am not a fan of an elite CAG message board, if that excludes me from it oh well. I hate elitism, who judges the criteria for who gets in. I know there are the people that everyone knows, but just because everyone knows them, does that make them worthy of being in the private club. It would be different if there was a set thing that needed to be earned. From the sound of it, this group would be alleged elites selecting alleged elites. If this happens I hope you all get secret handshakes, tattoos, and members only jackets, cause you will be the envy of every commoner CAGer. If it is a secret board, then posts will spread over rumors of who is a member and stories will be told of their greatness.

I have been in plenty of arguments with certain CAGers but I realize they have the right to write what they want, that’s the point of the board, everyone can speak their minds whether you want to hear it or not. This superior group seems to defeat the point of the board. Some people could start posting deals only on the elite boards or other things. So for what it is worth, this is me putting my personal seal of rejection on this idea.

I agree 100% with this. People here are starting to forget that what made this board great in the first place was the sheer amount of people communicating and pooling their resources and information to get the most out of deals. I don't think there is much else to add, dtcarson spelled it out pretty conclusively.

I definitely don't want to see this board turn elitest, and an exclusive subforum would be nothing but a high posting/popularity circle jerk.
