We won't get a proper sequel until after RPG Thread VIII-2!

I have Burnout Legends, the first Hot Shots, Patapon 1 and 2, and a couple fighting games but I'm with you guys. RPGs are where it's at.

I own 27 PSP games total, most are RPGs the ones that aren't are:

Parappa the Rappa
Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
DJ Max Fever
Mega Man Powered Up
Metal Gear Ac!d
Metal Gear Portable Ops
Silent Hill Origins
Pangya: Fantasy Golf

So I guess around 70% of my PSP games are RPGs haha. Not too many of those RPGs are remakes or ports though.

Crap.maybe I do have more non-RPGS then I thought. Forgot Silent Hill and the Metal Gears. Oh well PSP is still THE RPG system these days.

Started up Vagrant Story off the PSN to take a break from Demon's Souls. I like the game mechanics, but I keep hitting X to select things instead of O. I'll get it eventually. I think this game could have really been great with a little more polish. The game mechanics are a good set-up, but they are a little clunky and equipment is hard to compare to each other. Overall though, this is a solid PS1 game.

I dunno; even with 3DS imminent, vanilla DS is still getting some good stuff.

Don't have a PSP, but it has quite a few RPGs I'd love to play. Both the DS and PSP are great systems for RPG players, IMO.

sweetdiculous!!

Especially for JRPGs. If I were to come up with my favorite JRPGs of this gen, only a few would be console games (Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Valkyria Chronicles).. Pretty much every JRPG I've fallen in love with this generation has been on either the PSP or DS.

I dunno about that. I'd personally take TWEWY, Devil Survivor, and Bowser's Inside Story over any of the RPGs on PSP. And as for ports, nothing beats Chrono Trigger. Not to say that the PSP doesn't have some good RPGs, I'm just interested in many more RPGs for DS than PSP.

You're probably about right. I'd say DQIX and Devil Survivor are probably the best handheld games I've played this gen, and Radiant Historia is well on its way to joining that group. Though from the PSP side of things I'd put Jeanne D'Arc up there too.

As much as I want to like the psp more, I have to agree as well. The DS has a good deal more quality RPGs, and the only system this gen to add to my favorite RPGs list (remakes don't count, Etrian Odyssey and Infinite Space if you're curious). SMT games on the DS are good, but aren't a step above the console variants, imo. I know people will be wondering why Valkyria Chronicles and various Tales games aren't in that list. I loved VC's art and gameplay, but it just never made a huge connection with me. And most people will hate me here, but I actually haven't really cared for a Tales game since Phantasia.

so just picked up nier, and it's fucking fantastic. much better storytelling and atmosphere than most RPGs this generation.

reminds me of berserk's world and games.

so apparantly after releasing nier they broke the team up. lol figures.

Also some of the best music I've ever heard in a game.

I hated the gameplay though, so that tainted the experience for me somewhat.

Edit: Figured I'd provide an example of how amazing the music in Nier is. I've been listening to RPG scores for as long as I've been gaming, and if it's not the best I've ever heard it's up there.

This.

I really need to finish Nier.
I dont know of any off the top of my head in the latter genre, but heres what I've got for rpgs (excluding...ports of games from other systems...).

Tactics Ogre

??? TO is the 2nd port of an SNES game. I don't know why you'd ignore ports.

Ya, I'll agree with this as well. My main problem with the PSP is a lot of the better RPGs it has are all SRPGs and typically I get burnt out on SRPGs before I finish them (actually the only one I've ever finished is Valkyria Chronicles); that and SRPGs don't typically make great hand held games because they require a rather large time investment for each play session unless you want to suspend in combat. In that regard I feel like TWEWY, the Mario & Luigi games, and Chrono Trigger make much better games for being played in short bursts but feeling like your making progress.
I really need to finish Nier.
Ya me too, I really like what I played but I went to play another game and that was a while ago so I have lots of games that are on my list to play through; sometime I'll get back to it though.

That's exactly what happened to me. I'll probably go back to it after DA2 and Pokemon.

Portable games don't do it for me in most cases. If I can't get the game anywhere else I deal with it but I prefer to play on a television.

The PSP is best used to play old PSOne classics from the PSN on the go.

Dragon Age II really doesn't seem like it's going to live up to Dragon Age: Origins. Combat is much easier than the first one, and so far the missions just seem like a clusterf***.

I am the opposite, I would take portable over sitting in front of a TV. With my DS and PSP I can play for 30 minutes, put it in sleep and do something else for 30 minutes, and jump back in the game.

I beat Nier yesterday, I expected a more grand ending though but I guess that's what endings B, C, and D are for.

I've started my B playthrough and the first thing they hit you with are novel segments about Kaine's past. Sad to know that these will be the last ones, those walls o' text were amazingly well done.

Same here. It also saves the wear and tear on my aging LCDs.

Both White Knight Chronicles 2 and the PSP spin-off are getting a European release in May. I imagine a US release should be announced soon.

Finally put down DQIX and got back to Might and Magic : Clash of Heroes, which I had stopped halfway through to start DQIX. Man, I had forgotten what a great game Clash of Heroes is. Calling it an RPG is a bit of a stretch, maybe, but it's damn fun.

I read somewhere awhile ago that WKC2 also is including the first game or some junk. (that may have been the Japanese release though)

I think both games are on the disc because apparently you're unable to play the second one without save data for the first.

I could never get into WKC. I liked the idea of it and thought it should have been fun but the interface was just so weird I couldn't enjoy it. I might have to go back and give it another shot at some point.
Still chuggin' through Radiant Historia. The battles in that game are pretty challenging.
I've found that too. They start off pretty easy to get you in the swing of the mechanics, but once the enemies get too tough to beat all in one turn the difficulty definitely ramps up. I've found it very well balanced so far in terms of challenge.
Calling it an RPG is a bit of a stretch, maybe, but it's damn fun.
Yeah, that's how I felt. I'm more likely to call it one of my favorite Puzzle games ever.
Still chuggin' through Radiant Historia. The battles in that game are pretty challenging.
Have you ever died in a battle??

coz as far as I can see, the battles are real easy.

yeay u get hurt a lot and lose a lot of HP and hafta use a lot of magic, but to me that's not difficulty.

that's the illusion of difficulty.

as long as I'm not dying, I consider the battles easy as pie.

I've lost maybe 1 character in a fight, but I haven't been wiped out yet. Although I fought that boss that
beefed up attacks so it did 130 dmg with one hit

It made it a lot easier when the midget guy got the area heal.

Is anybody getting Ar Tonelico 3? Yea, I know.. loli pedos and all that, but the graphics look pretty good and the battle system looks fun. I might actually bump it up my backlog after I beat Radiant Historia.

Got it pre-ordered, should be in the day I get off vacation and head back to work.

I must be slipping. I thought I had preordered Radiant Historia. Today it just hit me, "wait, where is it?" Luckily deep discount still had it, it's OOS already from Amazon, GS, BBY.

playing Valkyria Chronicles 2, last CP... wanted to put my medic behind a sandbag as she was the only one keeping the main base from being captured.

for whatever reason, hitting circle made my medic retreat instead of crouching, next turn, they capture my base. have to start the mission ALL over again. -_-;

popped in VC3 to check it out. seems okay, looks like they're covering the Gallian War again but with a different unit.

I've only put in about 2 hours or so. Just past the prologue and got the Title Character (the White Knight) game seems pretty dull. I've already learned 20% of the sword skills?

And for some reason lunging slash always does more damage than anything else? So why do I have a back slash, a thrust, a helm breaker, etc.....

What game is that Rod? Looks a bit like my memory of Magic Knight Rayearth (Saturn), though said memory is purely based on a gamepro review...

Don't know what the Saturn one in particular looks like, but it's definitely a Magic Knight Rayearth game of some sort. I recognized the portrait in the upper left and some of the sprites as characters from the original manga.

Yeah, That's Magic Knight Rayearth for Saturn, translation courtesy of Working Designs (obviously)

It's a really good action RPG playing very similar to Zelda. Too bad it's so darn expensive and rare. The diary/journal was interesting. You get to hear each of the girls perspective throughout key points in the game. Also it's colorful and a good soundtrack. It's girly but it's a guilty pleasure.

While you may TWEWY, Devil Survivor, and Bower's Inside Story, I prefer Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Crisis Core: FFVII, and Valkyria Chronicles II over what I can get on other handhelds. While DS has the remakes of Dragon Quest (I like DQ, but not a massive fan), I greatly prefer Star Ocean over Dragon Quest (Star Ocean 1 and 2 on PSP is huge to me). Remakes/ports of some of the best games ever such as Persona 3, Tactics Ogre: Lets Cling Together, FFT War of Lions, Lunar: Harmony Silver Star, various YS games, etc. I also enjoyed new games like Hexyz Force, Phantasy Star Portable 2, Crimson Gem Saga, Half Minute Hero, Jeanne D'Arc, and many other imported games such as Tales (plenty of them on PSP). While Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games of all time, there are PS1 downloads of FFVII, FFIX, and Xenogears (The only few games I rank higher than CT for me) that play on the PSP.

The main reason I replied to this thread was to talk about Hyperdimension Neptunia. There has definitely been some mixed responses with some reviewers calling it beyond awful, while some thinking it was just average. From playing Record of Agarest (thought it as decent), Trinity Universe (I mostly liked it, but not one of my favorites), and Cross Edge (Ugh), this is my feelings.

At first I thought the game was beyond awful, where the tutorials didn't make any sense, battles felt way too long and cumbersome, and the music was terrible (because I was in 8 bit area). Once I got past that, things have gotten a lot better. With the battle systems, once you create combos (you kind of gotta figure it out on your own) and name them, battles go MUCH quicker and become very interesting with the amount of combos you can create. Only hard part is memorizing them. I've become a little addicted to battling now, although I still hate that healing is done automatically. The story sequences are pretty funny and enjoyable. The game definitely does NOT have a deep story (more so simple), which is what I expected. The setup of the game is getting addicting where I find events, go shopping in town, and explore dungeons (whether it be kill x number of certain monsters, find the boss, or advance the story along doing something....some give me a rank afterwards). The game is quite similar to Trinity Universe, but seems to be better setup IMO (re-uses some of the same music). The game is NO epic and those wanting a great RPG just won't find it here. Those just wanting a turn-based RPG where you can do a lot of combos (even if they take time) and take on missions, the game is good IMO (like a 7/10 for me).

Oh course, I may never play it again once Ar Tonelico Qoga comes out.

Yeah I'm not saying anyone is wrong for preferring the PSP for RPGs. I'm just saying that both have a lot of good RPGs, and which system you consider to have more quality titles overall will come down to personal taste since I wouldn't call either system the clear superior overall for RPGs.

One of the most underrated games last year. I like how it felt like a classic RPG, with a classic type storyline, decent battle system, and likeable characters. Also really liked the town design.
