What's in the PS Store (5/31/16): Neon Chrome, Oxenfree, Primal, There Came an Echo, Plague Inc, & More!
SNK is ridiculous.

Aren't all these games available in some sort of "neo geo" collection on every system ever released for < $60?
From what I understand, the SNK collection on PS2 is pretty dismal. Now, whether that is dismal to me, someone who enjoys SNK fighters, but won't notice the sorts of things that would drive ardent fans batshit insane, I dunno. Maybe it's passable. So hard to tell with the hyperbole of gamers in terms of calling things "broken" anyway.
The bundle price is crazy, but these have native online play via psn--something any other compilation lacks. That said, I am not interested in these games at these prices.
Pretty sure the SNK games on XBL have online play. Fatal Fury Special certainly does.
Am loving Tetris though. Only possible complaints would be no custom controls, though I personally don't have a problem with the classic setup. Well worth $9.99 if you're a Tetris fan.
YES. I've always played Tetris with the A button on Nintendo controllers and although O is in the same spot on a DualShock, it feels weird using it so much. I got over it pretty quickly though.

Overall, what I played was great. It's pretty much what you'd expect from a Tetris game. Can't wait to try some of the larger multiplayer modes. Co-op was kind of weird.
Pretty sure the SNK games on XBL have online play. Fatal Fury Special certainly does.
Yeah, they do', I was just referring to the disc collections.

Yeah, the Tetris game is pretty damn great overall. No big surprises, but its a very solid rendition. And yes, co-op is..... odd. I just played the single-player variant where you switch from side to side and it was almost just as awkward. Regardless, its a very nice version of Tetris for $10. I played online a bit and there was no lag or anything and games started quite quickly. The power-ups in Battle mode are pretty cool too.

There is a nice reward/progression system integrated throughout the game, so you always feel like you're progressing toward some sort of goal, which is nice.
$64 for the bundle for Plus members. I already bought Samurai Shodown.

It's not tempting b/c I can't imagine too many people who want all ten games.
Myke, how accurate is Samurai Shodown to it's arcade port? Would you say this is the best home release version (aside from the Neo Geo carts themselves)? I'd be willing to buy that bundle personally if they were all true to the originals.

Hmmmm Lead and Gold could be a fun little game if not for the fact that no one plays and those that do seem to have a lack of any idea of how to play the game! This is why no game should ever be released without an offline mode...I mean I would rather be playing with bots then these idiots.

I know it is just a demo, but Microbot wasnt as good as I thought it would be. Kind of slow. I liked Pixeljunk Shooter a lot better.

I also went ahead and got Bionic Commando Rearmed for 4.99. I thik thats a great deal. I loved the game back in the day.

NEOGEO bundle is a crazy/stupid price. But I remember Baseball Stars fondly. Anyone know how the gameplay has held up? I loved the arcade style gameplay (Bases Loaded was awesome too) when I was a kid and stopped playing baseball games once they got more simlike.

Baseball stars is just as you remember it, although I think it has not aged well. It seems to remain in a 4x3 aspect ratio, and trying any other configurations seem to distort the image too much.

I wish I had waited for a sale, but if you loved the Arcade, there isn't a whole lot of difference or improvement to the original.
Too bad Xbox doesn't have a Live arcade thread like this.
But redjoey has an awesome thread in the deals forum that lists all of the XBox weekly sales so that's where people go to see the deals.
gumn posted the full list.

The normal time for these updates is 6-9pm, PST. This one happened today almost promptly at 6pm. Sony is on pacific time.
No the updates used to hit at 3-5 p.m. pacific. I made it a habit to check the store at 6 p.m. central and it was there 95% of the time. It's not until this last month the updates were pushed back.

If Sony is going to make it a habit of not updating before 6-9 p.m. pacific then they need to make a public announcement of that so people like me and those bellyaching on the blog will stop being so pissed when for 2 years the update was at X time and now it's at Y time.

Wait for Baseball Stars Professional 2, it's one of the best arcadey baseball games ever made. (This is from a non-sports games fan, I have yet to play a Baseball title since that I have as much fun with as this game, so how's that for a recommendation ;) )

As per the Neo Geo motto, it's bigger, badder and better than the original, heh.
holy shit 70 bucks for 10 old neo geo games seems pretty steep.

Not $70, but $80. Yeah... that's pretty freaking crazy. Really curious as to how many people will buy that.
Yeah but that's a savings of $1920 (at $200 a piece, most were actually $250 a piece brand new) off of the original release prices from when they were released for the Neo Geo system, heh. Man I can't believe I used to buy some of those things, and I thought $150 was a good deal when i got KoF '94 back in the day.

If you're so pissed about the time, why don't you wait until the next day to check to see what they have on sale? The content isn't going away...

FYI they've had no set time since they launched the PS store. The update has almost always been between 6-9pm PST for the past year.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/05/turbografx-classics-to-crush-psn-this-month/
Hudson announced that Turbografx 16 games will be coming to PSN this month without revealing specific dates or pricing for the games.

"TurboGrafx Classics" from Hudson
 • Alien Crush
 • Bomberman '94
 • Bonk's Adventure
 • Dungeon Explorer
 • Neutopia
 • New Adventure Island
 • Soldier Blade
 • Super Star Soldier
 • Victory Run
 • World Sports Competition

This thread's a little more in-depth than just deals, which is why it's over here and not in the deals forum. I'd imagine that that's what he's talking about.
Lead and Gold is pretty good. I'm really enjoying it
Same here. Charging $14.99 for this was a mistake. Had it been $9.99 or less, I'd have bought it before becoming a plus member. For free though, it's awesome.

I had the same experience you did. I played "Gold Fever" (I think that's the mode), and no one seemed to understand that you had to take the gold to your base in order to win. I saw people just shooting each other, and not accomplishing anything.

Even though I understand what I'm doing, I've yet to be on a team that's won!

Stoked to see some of the TG16 games come to the US.

They seem to be ramping up their classic releases lately. Xenogears rated for NA release, a number of other excellent PSOne titles, Neo-Geo, and now TG-16? They're taking over where Nintendo slacked off with the VC, as many of you note.

Funny thing is that no one is playing shoot out. Everyone wants to just run around killing each other....yet no one plays the mode intended for that type of game!

does Tetris allow you to turn off that "shadow" that shows where your piece is gonna land? not really a make-or-break issue for me but it always kinda bugged me. Are any of the modes similar to "Next Tetris" on PS1? That was my favorite Tetris game ever... brilliant multiplayer scoring system that pushed the "just one more round" mentality better than any game I've ever seen.
did anyone know that theres a little big planet 2 demo up on psn? had to search for it but its there.

Maybe Sony will release some classic SNES and N64 games to pick up the Virtual Console's slack.
 lol (@ Nintendo)

But I'd still like for them to concentrate on releasing PS1 games, they've done a bad enough job of that as it is over the last 4 years. ;)

I didn't see any variants that sounded like Next Tetris, though I still have a few to unlock. Yes, you can turn off the "shadow" (they call it "ghost" in the options).

How is Tetris on PSN? I'll eventually get it, but $9.99 is bugging me. I could have lived with a PS Plus discount ($7.49), but paying $10 for it has me on the fence.

I really, really like it. The base game is solid, plays well, and looks great. The variants are all pretty interesting. The in-game achievement-type system is nice enough that I want to keep playing. The online stuff is really fun. I just finished playing with some CAGs and its a really good time. Unfortunately, the voice chat seems a bit wonky. At times it would be fine, and at times somebody would sound like they were just gargling mouthwash.

If you're interested, IGN put up a review of the game. I'm not usually a huge fan, but I just read it and I agree with it almost 100%. I'd argue that its easily worth $10.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1142751p1.html

That IGN article is pretty accurate. Most of my complaints about the game are pretty minor--you have to log in separately to EA's servers, the online lobbies don't have the practice mode the latest DS version did, there's a lot of loading (probably never more than 10 seconds, but for Tetris that's kind of obnoxious). The voice chat sucks, but is simultaneously HILARIOUS.

IGN also says you can use custom soundtracks. I didn't test it solo, but (like many other PS3 games) it's not possible online.

Basically, it's still Tetris. The main draw here is the multiplayer, and for that it's definitely worth $10. If you're just planning to play single player, you're probably OK sticking to any other versions you already own.

Thanks for your input. It's funny that you mention the IGN review, because as soon as I finished typing my comment I thought to myself "I'll see if there's any reviews out?" IGN gave it an 8.5, and from what I read it's worth $9.99.

My list of pipe-dream wishes for a future patch (yeah, right) for Tetris:

-Some sort of lobby system, so you can pick different modes without having to back out and re-invite everyone.
-Automatic login to EA's servers, like Metaly and the IGN article mentioned
-The ability for more than one local player to join an online game. In other words, if me and my friend could both be on my PS3 and join an online match with other people. Plenty of other games have done this (Bomberman comes to mind) and I wish more games would support it. I would have thought that it would be fairly trivial for a game as simple as Tetris. The only potential issue I see is the amount of screen real estate involved.
-I'd like the voice chat issue to be resolved. Although, it does sound pretty damned hilarious, like you said.

Overall, I still see those as pretty minor issues and I'm very happy with the purchase.
Although I mostly agree with metaly's statement that if you aren't going to play online, just stick with whatever Tetris version you already have, the only other one specifically available on PS3 is the minis version, which obviously lacks trophies.
It's not playable on the PS3, mostly due to them working on the PS3 version when Minis were opened up to the PS3.

PSone Japan Classics

Mega Man – A port of the NES original with slightly enhanced graphics & sound as well as save points, unlocakable art and other special features.

minis

Shift Extended – Locked up with other subjects of a scientific experiment, Subject 32763 must figure out a way out. Escape the many traps of the game and find your way through this gigantic maze. But the path to safety is not clearly visible … or is it? Use the “SHIFT” function to radically the architecture of the levels. White becomes black, the ground is now air, up is down and left is right: everything is shifted 180 degrees. This allows the player to shift the environment at will and therefore find new ways to get to the exit.

Pipe Madness – Put together some pipes — pronto! In Pipe Madness, you must rush to complete your pipeline before the liquid catches up with you or all of your hard work will be ruined. Combat the flowing liquid over endless levels and reach that unbeatable high score. Maximize your bonuses by building intricate pipe networks.

5 in 1 Solitaire – Now you can take five of the most popular solitaire games with you on the go. 5 in 1 Solitaire features the always-popular Klondike, Spider and FreeCell games as well as the unique Golf and Gaps versions of solitaire. Each of these versions has a unique style of play that’s easy enough for novice players to enjoy but will also challenge experts. You can also view tutorials for each game, track your scores and view gaming stats to see your progress.

Karimogi – Karimogi is an alien that needs you! The situation is critical. Cranes are dropping bricks everywhere and Karimogi needs your help to push them around and put them in order or he will never see his spaceship again. Arrange the bricks into rows and they will then disappear. But be careful, you must stay very alert because any brick could crush you!
