SMRPG I haven't played for years now, but Earthbound, sure.

Mallow is still one of my favorite characters, so hopefully SMRPG stands up.

It does :)
I re-played it 2 years ago after not playing it for at least 3-4 years and I still had an awesome time.

The only thing that bothers me is that there's a certain someone with the OLD NAME of "Toadstool"

As it should be. Kids and their Peaches these days.

I played it over this past winter break... I haven't had so much fun playing an RPG in ages. The game's fantastic.

I'm buying it again so I can play it again.
If you have a PS2 you coudl just paly five more dollars and get some extra games
http://www.amazon.com/SNK-Arcade-Cl..._2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1212130088&sr=1-2

or wait for the eventual wii realease of that OR the anthology that's supposed to come out.

edit: or where you making fun of his spelling?
Snk Playmore doesn't even know how to get a rom and an emulator to work together. That ps2 comp is pathetic compared to the real thing. I here the psp version is much better but retail stores around here don't carry it. :cold:
Any words about anything coming out next week?
Most places that get the early PR would get it later tonight. However, Nintendo's been cracking down on those who leak the PR, so we'll probably have to wait for Monday.

Or at least until the people who look through the VC/WiiWare title shots find something new.
I have never played SMRPG or Earthbound. Is there a good game in there once the nostaglia is gonE?
I'm 100% sure once Earthbound comes out that there will be an endless shitstorm around the entire Intermotrons of people who will claim they got "duped" into the "hype" of the game. As much as I absolutely love the game to death and hold it in the highest regard, I know that there's a trove of things that are required to like it.

The first is that you have to look past the graphics - they are simple, but incredibly stylish. The second is that you have to look past the battle system - there's nothing special to it. And finally, the third is that you have to end up liking the story and the characters, and since it's completely outlandish for an RPG, most people will shrug it off without finishing it.

The deal with Earthbound is that there's this really odd emotional undercurrent that runs through the entire game, and it happens to do it in very subtle ways. You'll complete an objective in it and it'll make this really out-of-place comment about Ness's childhood. You - as the player - either see this as strangely poignant/touching, or you don't care at all, and then continue to complain that the game has a poor story.

But when you really examine everything in the game - from these curious moments to some of the events you play through - the story is actually fairly complex in terms of this (again) odd emotional undercurrent. That's why Itoi (the creator) was going around talking about love and sadness when Mother 3 came out in Japan - he's trying to inject this real sincere sense of sympathy into the game and wants players to feel some very specific responses.

If you don't pay attention, or if you hate some vital aspect of the game, or if you can't let yourself have an emotional link with a game (and trust - that doesn't happen often, despite what all the JRPG players say), or if you absolutely refuse to judge the game on its own terms and merits versus complaining about technical problems and a simple battle system, etc etc etc.....then yeah, you'll hate the game and probably relegate it to "no nostalgia = no fun."

Earthbound is a prime, prime example of a cult game. It has one of the most dedicated groups of fans I've ever seen. But don't think because we're fanatic about it that we don't have reason if you hate/don't like it (by the way, "you" is general here), because the game hits a very different part of our psyches than pretty much any other game out there. I imagine it is the same one that ICO/Shadow of the Collosus fans experience (since I need to go play those).

That's really the deal here - I actually think the overall opinion of Earthbound will suffer once it hits the VC, because the 'net is going to light up with a bunch of "THIS IS IT?" nonsense from people who flat out don't get it or refuse to get it. Which is somewhat fine, except that if Nintendo is listening - and they are - they'll probably be smug assholes about it, touting small sales and conducting surveys over whether or not the general population liked it.

I'll be happy when it comes out, but I'll want to kick some asses if I ever find out you other people had something to do to foil my enjoyment in the brazenly hopeless hope that I'll ever see an officially translated Mother 3.

As for SMRPG - I don't know if other games did the active battle command thing before it was around, where you had to press buttons in conjunction with good timing in order to make strong attacks/defend yourself. It was the first one I'd played that did that. Combined with the great graphics (which still hold up well enough today), the good length of the game, and all the funky little secrets, I'd say SMRPG would still fair well if it were released today on the DS and no one had played it before.

SMRPG is actually much easier to recommend than Earthbound, but then again, so would FF6 and Chrono Trigger.

I still think Earthbound towers above all of them though.

Man, Sonic & Knuckles needs to come out soon. They put the first 3 out fairly briskly, but not the last one :(. I certainly hope they enable those who purchased both to download the combined rom as well. And maybe sell the combined was separately for like 1200 points.

And SMRPG remains as one of 3 turn based RPGs I've beaten (along with FF7 and Chrono Trigger). I will download that the second it's available. I've not played it since... highschool... so.... 199...8?

This week I've been basking in how awesome the VC is. I just plowed through Sonic 1-3, Mario 1, 3, and World in 2 days. So great to have them all in one box, no disc swapping, progressive scan, etc. Mmmmm... over-priced but easy-to-access downloads...

thanks strell! I would like to give them both a try but I just remembered something:

SMRPG was never released in Europe. chances of Vc release for me? ....

If it makes you feel any better, I've never played the game either. I never had a SNES, so a VC release would be the first time I play Earthbound or Super Mario RPG.

More proof Nintendo doesn't think the storage issues are real:

IGN: We recently had to delete half the games and Channels on our systems to make room for two WiiWare titles. Lack of storage space has become a huge problem. What're your thoughts on this issue? Will Nintendo address it soon?

Tom Prata, NoA Wii Senior Project Manager: Consumers have the option of either deleting the game and downloading it again for no additional Wii Points, or transferring the game from Wii to external SD memory card. They can also eat my ass because they are whiny little fuckers because I have 18 Wiis at my house that I got for free for being a pimp Senior Project Manager, or Senproman, as I have named myself, as Tom Prata is a dumb name and is just my alter ego alias. I fight crime like a reverse Robin Hood - I line the mighty pockets of Nintendo by charging a lot of money for Wiiware titles I don't know shit about.

But back to the point - it's not an issue. All the babies who think it is are stupid babies who need stupid baby diapers. Why not just buy more Wiis and save the data to them, babies? You can have a Wii cluster and then our profits will get even more than more because I managed to convince all the people who already owned one to buy another even though they bitched like bitches. Then I'll get a promotion and another free system to store more shit on. fuck - sometimes I just make extra copies of data on the same system just because I fucking can and you can't, shitbags!

Also, I have a gigantic refrigerator. Seriously, it's huge. I can put a motorcycle in there, and also a naked model on the motorcycle that I can have sex with at the same time. Senproman plays it big, motherfuckers.

The interview points out that there are "about 100 Wiiware games in development" right now.

Brilliant, Nintendo. And I have no fucking place to put them.

The second homebrew hackers let me use an external HD, I'm done with this shit. It's sad that I'm relying on such means, but I'm fucking tired of this.

I agree a BILLION TIMES with this.
Like I said a whole lotta times, for me it's the save data thats adding up. Eventually, my Wii is gonna be 50-75% full of just save data.

I'll be right in line after you setting up an external HDD if this shit NEVER happens. (I say that, because I'm dumb and will need someone to help me  )

I'll help you. Everyone seems to be PMing me about homebrew nowadays anyway. You know who you are. We'll start the Wii infraction collectors club. :whee:

Luckily mods don't come in this forum anyway.

I maintain that if they started handing them out, that would be in extraordinarily poor taste, since they know it's a case of looking the other way elsewhere it's discussed.

Hell, I can run games directly from my SD card without even having to modify my Wii.

Homebrew programmers > Nintendo.
Hell, I can run games directly from my SD card without even having to modify my Wii.

That would be ideal for me.
I'm not looking to really mod my Wii, I'd just like to eventually install something to let me play games from my SD card. That's it.

:bomb:

It is funny how the thought that emulation is making its way onto the Wii makes me want to stop buying VC games. Although I basically already have. It is WiiWare or nothing right now.
I hate you.
Me too.

I don't mod, but I brew at home and would jump to an "unofficial" hard drive as well. I'd still buy games from Nintendo too. WiiWare has gotten me completely excited with every release, even the ones I don't actually want. I like options.

Modding is for playing "backups". The Twlight Hack/Homebrew is for WW/VC "backups" and homebrew programs (emulators, tech demos, etc). Either way you might as well be wearing an eye patch and enjoying some rum.

A channel for each system. Loading directly from SD. Make it happen Nintendo. The homebrew scene has invaded your channels already.

So of course my power goes out for two fucking hours. Luckily it came back on or I would not get any sleep due to not having a fan to cool the room down. To make matters worse I hear about Nintendo being fucking dumbasses about the whole storage thing.

I personally am not a pirate, nor do I ever want to be (well for games anyway), BUT if you were to tempt me with a hard drive for the Wii that doesn't mod the Wii in anyway shape or form, god damn how I would be tempted. This shit is getting old now, I have 31 blocks of data and in all seriousness if I were to get rid of a game to compensate it is getting to the point where we are talking about getting rid of kid icarus, super metroid, kirby's adventure, punch out, some of Nintendo's finest.
Not to mention you can play SNES roms with a Classic Controller.
YES I love the CC. While I do have a chip and a gamecube emulation disc that basically has everything on it, the gamecube controller sucks for these old games.

Now that I have 20 blocks left, I have promised to never buy another game. I could care less about having the option to delete games and leter have the option to download them again. My wireless connection sucks bad enough and I am not going to deal with that. I have homebrew on my PSP and would gladly welcome some on the wii.

290 blocks. I'm getting tired of these 1000 point games, and having to delete a ton of games. I think I'll pass if I don't have enough points.
If nothing else interesting is released, I'll get Toki Tori. Super Mario RPG would take precedence, though, and we can still hope it'll show up here. :)

I can not wait until Mario RPG comes. I really do think it will be out in June for us too.. I just feel it :)
My American friends, you are in for a treat. I’ve almost finished my review of Toki Tori, it’s a 9/10 game. Pure brilliance.
it's towards the beginning of the game

Try running.

If that doesn't work, you need to get the Speed Boost before you can make it. Pretty sure you can make it for right now on just pure running though.

I've tried it, or maybe not.
What I've done was like the dash in SSBB (where you hold down to the right to run) don't know if I should be holding a button as well to run or what -- also, any tips on where to get the speed boost?

If you hold down the shooting button (I think) you can run faster, like the old school Mario Bros. Are you doing that? Kind of hard for me to tell.

I don't think you get the speed boost for a while, but I'd have to replay the game to know.

about getting the speed boost later on - that makes more sense now too

Mario RPG? Never heard of that one (end Nintendo employee speak ).

Yeah I hope that one does come out soon, really want to play that one. Chances are bastards will put it out on Monday and then I nab Odin Sphere and Worms 2 for the DS. Either that or GS doesn't have any of the games and no Mario RPG, lol.

I was thinking about grabbing Toki Tori but once I saw 290 blocks, fuck no. So Nintendo (and whoever made the game), you could of had my $10 but well since I have no space no game :bomb:

Keep dreaming, this game has a complicated licensing issue between Nintendo and Square which is likely never going to be resolved. We're probably not going to see Mario RPG again in our lifetimes.

It was supposedly just rated for release on the Japanese VC not 2-3 days ago. This is a step beyond the ESRB rating that was put out forever ago - this list is supposed to be something Nintendo releases in Japan at the beginning of each month to tell what is coming out.

Whether or not that points to official release, I have no idea. But to rule it out completely is a little premature.

There's no reason why this game won't be coming here at all.

Now, the Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc, are totally different stories..

It sure sounds like official release to me.

Did it dawn on anyone else that the Game Days sale starts on the same day as the next WiiWare/VC releases? I'm not planning on getting much, but they do have a Worms game for the DS included, something I need to get.

I need to stop spending so much. :whistle2:k

I've heard that the GameCube controller is awful for SNES games, but would it matter for Super Mario RPG?
