Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
[*]ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...

Every console-maker needs a differentiator; a reason to buy it rather than its competition.

Usually, of course, that's games; buy a Nintendo so you can play Mario.  But as 2016 went along - and we stopped hearing about interesting new IPs from Phil & company - I wonder if Microsoft decided just to bet on Scorpio as its key selling point to consumers: play most 3rd-party games on console with the best tech on the market.

I say this because once again - with today's cancellation - we're reminded how difficult it has been for Microsoft to establish IP this generation.  And the decision to trust 2nd-party relationships to close the exclusivity gap with Nintendo and Sony just isn't working.

I'm feeling pretty frustrated right about now....

Ok, quick before the sale ends:

Should I pick up AC Rogue? Im a fairly big fan of the games having completed 1 through Revelations, all of which I enjoyed (pretty much ignored bomb making and tower defense in the last one however). I am thinking about playing through 3, 4 and Rogue since I understand they are all loosely connected but am wondering what is the best order story wise since the chronology doesn't fit the release dates? I have 4 from GWG but would need to buy 3 and Rogue. Any of them I should definitely skip? I have my doubts about 3 due to all the bad press and Rogue due to the middling reviews but I've lived in Boston and NYC so feel like I would like those games just because of the setting and historical context.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Edit: Or should I just go with Portal 2 for the good, wholesome entertainment?

Nintendo has so many quality games and teams because they've built them up over nearly 35 years, and have actively been bringing younger people on board that help breathe new life into their company. (On the development side, business side is a whole other animal.) And while they don't CONSTANTLY pump out new IP, they do generally put their full weight behind new things to help give it a chance to succeed. I'm thinking of when Pikmin first came out, or Splatoon more recently.

Sony has a couple things going for them. First, the Japanese industry actually gives a shit about and develops for their platforms. Second, Sony themselves have several great teams that aren't entirely looked down to one franchise. Guriella Games finally got out from under Killzone to make Horizon Zero Dawn, you've got Sony Santa Monica, and you've got Naughty Dog who have made FOUR franchises that define PlayStation.

I think lately MS's biggest problems is trying to build these giant studios up to start pumping out AAA releases right away, not having the patience to actually let talent build up, or the foresight to keep their good teams happy. Letting Bungie leave rather than allow them to make something other than Halo was a terrible move. Rare was their best shot at greatness but they got cold feet when their first few games didn't sell as well as Halo, then Kinect fucked them and most of the company up for years. At the core of the Nintendo and Playstation teams, high up the ladder, you have actual game developers who give a shit with major influence (Iwata, Miyamoto, Sakurai, Yoshida). Microsoft hasn't really had that since Ed Fries or to a lesser degree Peter Moore.

I swear if it wasn't for all the fun I had on xbl during the xbox/360 days I would say fuck Xbox cause honestly theres no reason to even own one at this point.

4 is by far the most fun to me. Pirate warfare and such. All are good in their own way, but people seem to hate 3. Ezio has been my favorite character, but 4 still hold the crown for most fun. to me.

Dammit, that sucks.  I was really looking forward to Scalebound.  I probably would have ended up thinking it was meh because it's Platinum, who make pretty games that are too unforgiving and have to ****ing rate you on every little thing you do.  I guess MS rating them on taking too long to make the game really got to them.  Maybe they will stop doing that stuff now that they've had a taste of their own medicine.

Hopefully Crackdown 3 still comes out and is good.

I've played them all and enjoyed each one to varying degrees. I see a lot of hate for 3, but I enjoyed it. The American Revolution setting was cool and the story was pretty good. Black Flag is my second favorite (next to ACII). I liked Edward Kenway and I loved the focus on sailing. Plus, I'm a sucker for a good pirate game. Rogue was more of the same as Black Flag, but with a different character. I enjoyed it, but it was not as memorable to me. After playing all 9 main games, fatigue can definitely set in, so it depends on how much you enjoy the core mechanics. Unity was just okay for me, but Syndicate got me excited to play again. It's not that they made major changes (there were a couple of good tweaks), but I liked the twins as main characters.

Between Rogue and Portal 2, I'd go with Portal 2 as Rogue will more likely go on sale again sooner than P2. Then again, Rogue is the longer game...

Tough choice :)

Can someone tell me on how do I apply shoprunner benefits to newegg purchases? ESO base game is on sale for 9.99 on newegg with a use of a promo code but I can't apply shoprunner to it for free shipping. It says the game is eligible also on shoprunners site but I can't checkout there, only through newegg.
You should be able to sign in to your SR account while in your NewEgg cart during the checkout process.

Another week, another likely disappointment that Axiom Verge isn't on sale.

The semester is slowly starting, so it's probably for the better. Back to discussing games on the internet instead of having time to play them.

Last second question about Killer Is Dead.  I know the game has a "hit on chicks at the bar" type mini game.  How integrated into the actual game is this?  Can I completely skip it without missing out on something integral to the main game?  Can I skip out on it at all?

Ha I was pretty disappointed, just quickly scanning through the list 2 weeks ago. Spent about half the day thinking it was on sale instead of some game called Soul Axiom.

you really want to skip the game because of that?

No, he's asking if he can skip any or all of the sneaky oggling sections. I can understand that. I'd feel sheepish if my wife was watching me play and I definitely couldn't pay it in front of my kids. Completely legit question.

Unfortunately, I have no idea as I've never played it and not really interested in it! :D

Is Mighty No. 9 a Megaman game? I've never played any Mega game before and was wondering if I should pick it up and try it out

It's a Mega Man "clone," made from the original creator of the Mega Man series. The general consensus is that it didn't live up to the hype.

After I said I wasn't interested in it I thought "well, maybe," so I checked the price and it's super cheap so I watched the ign review and am pretty confident I'd never be interested enough to play.

However, they did say that the gigalo missions are not necessary for the main game, but are necessary to unlock subweapons that deepen combat and help explore the missions more thoroughly.

Hope that helps!

ouch at those sales... I will say Mantis Burn Racing is pretty good, but really niche. A racer that kind of plays like Zombie Ultimate Driver.

Thanks for digging into it. For $4 + tax, I could do worse. :)

I was trying to come up with zinger comparing this to the shit stories from the last thread and how no one could top this post... but I don't have it in me.

This is a horrible sale. Horrible. Shameful. Seriously, someone should be ashamed about this.

Well now to decide if I want anything still on the countdown sale before it vanishes... tonight's sale is to encourage last minute countdown purchases I think.

Binaries looks like it could be a good hard ass platformer. Only found a few reviews but all were positive.

Anyone here play it?

Racing game could be decent but more like $5 decent.

This sucks. XB1 doesn't have many exclusives and this looks even worst. I wonder how much MS dumped on Kamiya if this is the case... Platinum needs to stick to Bayonetta like games (Nier looks good and is also thanks to the Bayonetta like combat.)
First Phantom Dust and now this? Jesus, MS get your shit together.

No wonder it's sold about 100 units in Japan.

Not as bad as it was this year with MS and sequel-itis, but i'm seeing a lot of numbers behind those titles. That really is the Xbox's major short coming. Even under the guidance of Phil Spencer they really can't get it together to develop and nurture some new IP.
To their credit, they released a new IP last year (Recore) and they've got one slated for this year (Sea of Thieves). The problem is they should be doing more or at least making sure the few they put out are content-rich/polished at launch *cough* Recore *cough*.

LOL i watched a few vids of Killer is Dead, now i'm buying it and it wasn't even on my radar

i'm not much of a fan for crude humor in movies, but for some reason it works for me in games

Oh man, I'm legit emotional now. She's never going to have that terrace... Getting choked up just thinking about it.

Any of these no-name games have easy achievements at least?
