XNA Community Games Thread--Check out OP for January's Games, Top 10, & Master List

another game appeared this morning but I just haven't gotten around to posting it

Onslaught for 200 points.

screen3_Web.jpg

I thought the trial was a bit of a mess myself. It just drops you into the game without giving any clues on what to do and the hit detection is really off
So I tried Valhyre. I can't even get into the game, it is just stuck at some matchmaking menu? Anyone have any luck?
I was able to fly around when I tried it. It looks pretty good for a community game but damn did it need quite a bit of polish before it got released. Its quite twitchy and it makes for a strong case that multiplayer only games need something for the trial to get your feet wet outside of just being able to fly around in circles

I also wanted to note that we are up to 123 submissions on the community games section of the marketplace.

While I was on the Marketplace the other day I saw an advertisement for this Award Winning Community Game. The idea that a CG could be good enough to win an award surprised me so I downloaded the trial. I had so much fun and then booted it up today and ended up buying it since it was 400 MS Points and I had like 650 and didn't plan on using/saving them for anything in particular.

The name of the game is CarneyVale Showtime and here is a description of the game from Xbox.com:
"CarneyVale: Showtime is a vertical ragdoll platform game. In the game, you play as Slinky, a circus acrobat trying to rise up the ranks by performing acrobatic tricks and death-defying stunts through increasingly complex arenas."

The description is accurate, but I'd like to add that the game reminds me of pinball too because you basically shoot your guy from a starting point and you can bounce him off walls and affect his motion midair. You basically move him from rotation device to rotation device trying to collect balloons and make it through the hoop of fire at the end of the course without losing a life and doing it all within a certain amount of time. You get 1 star rating for doing each of those and a 5th one for finding a bonus star within each level. The levels get harder and harder and I keep replaying old ones to get a 5 star ranking. It is addicting. You can also create your own levels. The only thing I wish is that Leaderboards were allowed as well as the ability to download other people's creations. Now that would have been the icing on the cake! Glad to see others like it too now that I see its in the Top 3 CG purchases. Very cool.

The art style and production values were really cool and I couldn't believe that it wasn't an XBLA game. Just the opening sequence to the game screamed of stellar development. Since I had a lot of fun I decided to award the developer with a purchase in hopes of encouraging more great games like this. I never would have thought that I'd buy a Community Game but this game has changed my mind.

Glad you liked CarneyVale...It is one of my favorites as well. I, personally, cannot wait for the day when we are getting quality games over this massive quantity. Seriously...125 of these and I'd say that the number of games I'd pay for would be in the single digits.

@Cleaner7.

I like Carnyvale a lot too. It's sad that it took spotlight promotion to get people like you to try it out, but I guess that's the doom of most CG's for a while at least.

Try some more out. There are a handful that are about as good.

another game popped up

A Wizard's Odyssey for 400 points. Its definitely the biggest download be it an Arcade or Community game topping out at a whopping 479 megs. Either someone doesn't know how to compress data or its got quite a bit of stuff to it (I'll go with the former)
The RC airplane game looks cool. Anyone tried it out?
its okay. Controls are pretty good (they are a bit tight but after awhile you get use to them) but the graphics kill it for me.

new game up

Brain Deluxe for 800 points.
Added: *Joint Strike Future (Shooter) Price: 200 Microsoft Points (12/29)...X

They keep a comin'!

Tried to play *reTension earlier, but there was a glitch where the top half of my tv was flickering so I quit and deleted it. Anyone else have this problem? I really wanted to play to find out how a card/board game got 3/3 in both sex and mature content!
Hi, I'm Daniel...a dev for ReTension. The White box issue has been corrected. Alot of people asked how the game could possibly have gotten through playtest with a huge white flickering box. The answer had many Microsoft devs stumped as well. Turns out, it was a weird combination of a certain screen resolution, Anti-Aliasing, and a couple of other things.

The game was resubmitted to playtest, and is now back on the Marketplace without the box!

Thanks Everyone,

Daniel (SoNotSoft)

two new things

Rumble Masseuse for 200 points. Use your controller as a vibrator over Live. I wonder if there is an actual lobby or if you need to supply your own girl?

This game was classified by the community with the following category scores - Violence=0/3, Sex=0/3, Mature Content=0/3. Take control of someone else's controller to give them a soothing massage, either locally or over XBox Live. Solo mode lets you use your own controller to relax. Different vibration settings allow you to give the massage you want to give or receive. Supports voice chat so you can request the perfect massage. Great for long distance relationships.

Man, some interesting things being put up. Big things going on with work/family right now, should see some changes to the OP after Monday's work day. Thanks for keeping us updated fart_bubble

no problem

new game went up this morning

Bowling X for 200 points.
screen3_Web.jpg

Its quite simple (gameplay and the presentation) but not that bad of a bowling game. Its fun but the hook mechanics could have used some work (its like bowling with a polyurethane ball on a newly oiled lane which isn't that much fun IMO. Its also the reason why I've always tended to suck at tournaments), options to change the bowling lane conditions would have been sweet and I would have liked it if it had been Live enabled.

a few new games

Spacebrix for 200 points. Tetris clone with online multiplayer
screen3_Web.jpg

Slottso Party for 400 points. New game from the people who made the blackjack game. You can get up to 31 people in total playing on one giant online game.
screen2_Web.jpg

Puzzlix for 200 points. 13 different slide puzzles
screen4_Web.jpg

I just wanted to throw into the thread that I purchased Bowling X today. Rather fun, I must say. Pin physics for the most part are pretty spot on, though I've picked up more 7-10 splits in this game than my entire family has in real life.

Good snag for 200 points, in my opinion.

my main problem is getting a proper hook on my ball

Hi, I am the creator of DoubleVision and was wondering if anyone tried it and what their opinions were.

It is a mix of spot the difference and puzzle games.

It is on marketplace now for 400 points.

Hey all, I'm new here. I have a question. Has anyone had any issues with Spacebrix working offline? I post over at Xbox.com, and one of the guys there can't play the full version unless he's online.

He's using the same console he downloaded the game to, so it shouldn't be a DRM issue.

Thanks in advance. :D

You can only play any of the community games when connected to Xbox Live.
You can only play any of the community games when connected to Xbox Live.
Well that sucks. I appreciate the help. Thanks man.

Sales number came out recently, and for the most part it appears they were disappointing.

I honestly can't stress this enough, but Weapon of Choice and Carnyvale are at the very least two games on the service for 400 points that are better than most 800 Xbox Live Arcade releases.

interesting post from the Weapon of Choice dev:

interesting and disheartening

I have yet to buy a community game. The two main reasons for me is that there is too much crap to wade through to find a gem and the demos are timed (can't get that good of a feel for the game).

I'll be honest, most of those games remind me of freeware games you can find all over the net. I need a compelling reason to pay for those kind of games (I already have a pc connected to my HDTV, so that's not a reason).

man, those rates that people went to actually buying the games after the trials are disappointing. I'm curious about how many people bought Blackjack, 68,000 trial downloads is quite nice and it is a game that you will more than likely buy after the demo. Plus those guys are pretty cool soI personally hope they did decent numbers.

I'm also curious about how well Biology Battle did. I know there were at least 1000 sales just going by the leaderboards the last time I played it. The game is quite a bit of fun and I would like to see what they do next. And even if they didn't do all that well, I hope that it has at least lead to them getting contracted to do work for people with the game essentially becoming a business card

Seems like XNA Community Games is a failing project -- some blame has to go to M$ for gobbling up what little profits these small indie dev are making. Developers are also disappointed over the lack of marketing support in the LIVE marketplace infrastructure.

Maybe those developers should move on to the more lucrative iPhone development scene instead.
Or move to PS3 because of their new Public Funding program

fouts updated his blog regarded the revenue split
(Edit note: it has come to our attention that Microsoft has "decided to maintain the 70/30 split across the board whether your game was featured or not." Therefore, this is not longer a factor to consider. Thank you Microsoft!)

The iphone, in general, is even more of a gamble and less lucrative to indy devs than community games.

I played Carneyvale for the first time last night. For it being a "Community" game, I was totally impressed with the artwork and overall production. It's a shame it's probably being overlooked by the masses out there.

There are some good community games, but they are swimming in a sea of shit.

I really think the answer to all this is for Microsoft to implement a user rating system like Netflix has.
