ZUNE and your X360 - ZUNE HD Now in 64GB - Latest Update Now Supports AVI/XviD

I'm OK with a 32 GB version...though considering how cheap some of these solid state flash drives are, I can see how people are going to be upset.

$299 for 32? PLLEAASSEEE.

Even though the max is only 2 more GBs than I'm dealing with now, I'm still very interested in seeing what Zune HD can do. I am worried that the price will be more than the upgrade is worth, though...:whistle2:k

Damn. That's way too small. I couldn't even fit my music on that thing, much less HD content. I hope a bigger version comes out in 2010.
I fuckING KNEW IT!!! Why the hell they must taunt us with 16/32 gigs!?!?!?

so...i'm gonna wait it out then...
So they can get ya again when they release an 80 and 120gb a year later.

If it was 64gb, I'd be on it...but 32 the max????

I can't fuck with that
What is this, 2006 all over again? Who puts out a HD PMP with the highest storage option being 30GB? Blah
Solid state memory is far more expensive than a hard drive for a device like this.

How much memory do you honestly expect it to have at that form factor? At close to $100 for every additional 16GB, how much do you want to pay for the size you want?

Or you can wish they made another fat brick with a hard drive in it, then it would at least be easily 160GB and not very expensive. But then you'd complain it was a 2006 fat brick.

Interesting prices. Wow, 32 is $110 cheaper than the 32GB Ipod touch!
We'll see Ipod Touch's drop soon after the release for sure. I am willing to bet MS is selling these at cost or a loss.

I am actually really surprised with the date. That's way sooner than I expected. The new xbox dashboard update doesn't include the new Zune Video Marketplace; which I was sure would be released by the time the new Zunes came out. Guess I was wrong.
I know this one has internet and HD radio but at $290 for 32GB is still way too much.
Tell that to the legions of Apple cultists snatching them up at $400.

The Touch is really $400!?

Damn...I already have an iPhone so I have no real use for this, I think I may just skip the Zune HD for a generation and go with a Creative.

Very interesting pricing strategy. Expected at least $350 or more for the 32 gig but it does make it more appealing than a Touch unless Apple lowers the prices next month at their conference.

290 is an interesting price point....I can't lie....

For that price, I might...MIGHT...make a sacrifice and just slim down my collection of media for it.

Then again, how in the hell am I suppose to put 720p videos on a 32 gig hard drive?!?!?! That's like what? 2 vids?

I don't think you understand the size and cost requirements with solid state memory. A 64GB model wouldn't have been hard to make happen. I can buy a 16GB Micro SDHC card the size of a fingernail right now for $50. I'm sure Microsoft can get it cheaper than that. And I really don't see why they don't just include a Micro SD slot for memory expansion since so many people care about that.

Has there been any word on apps and games or are they still going with the same boring Zune software they already have?

Bigger space is possible right now. Its just too expensive.

I actually looked into your argument quite a bit back in May before I bought my Pre. The type of memory they are using in these devices is not the same as your microSD card. I can't really go into the details of why it's different, but it is - and it's more expensive.

Usually the reason manufacturers don't give you the option of using memory cards is a combination of performance and form factor. If they allow you to throw in an SD card, people would inevitably use cheap slow one, then they would install apps to run off it, which would ruin the overall experience they are trying to sell. Then, people would have one more thing to complain about. Thank Apple for setting this huge standard of selling the "experience". That's why they have such a closed system on everything they sell, so they can make sure your UI experience is the best it can be all the time.

Finally, if you think I'm wrong, show me a robust PMP with more solid state built in memory for less money than the ZuneHD 32.

MS has 720p down to 2-4GB per movie now with their advanced VC-1 codec.

No word yet, but with the power of the Tegra I'd expect games to happen. My connections close to Microsoft that work on games tell me they have received nothing in the way of dev-kits for Zunes, and if they existed, I am pretty sure they'd know about it.

I might have to save money up and get a 32 GB... I've been running on a 30 GB Gen 1 Zune for awhile now and been surviving. It really forces me to pare down my collection to the stuff I will mainly be listening to. In some way, it's sort of a good thing though it's been awhile since I've watched video on the go.

Hmmm, well like many others I kinda need more space on this, but the real selling point will be how exactly this interacts with Xbox or your Live account or whatever. Out with the details, MS!!!

Honestly I just want a Zune that plays music. I don't care for watching videos on that little thing.

My 1st Gen 30 Gig zune can only fit half my CD collection. I might go for a previous generation (Hopefully there are some deals in the future.)

I am in the same boat.

Yeah but connecting it to your HD tv and watching HD video off of it via HDMI is really damn cool.

Which brings me to another point - if they make it natively play Xvid/Divx then I'm likely sold.

Really want to take the plunge with the Zune HD but...anything that is only 32GB with "HD" in the name is kind of iffy for me. Throw 3 or 4 movies on there (if MS has managed to get 720p video down to 4 GB or less) and the stuff from my music collection I want on there, and it's full. Maybe I'll try to wait yet again until we get something with more space...

Like the posts above mine though, what I really am waiting to see is how it'll work with the 360. If it's nothing special, then forget it.

I don't think size will be an issue here. If you have a 360, I would think you ill be able to swap videos in and out of the 360.

EDIT:

I own a 3GS 32 GB and obviously the 3GS wins in comparison since it is also a phone

BUT when compared to the iTouch, the Zune HD is obviously a better buy on paper if and only if MS will get some type of app store running.

It'll be interesting to see if Microsoft will be able to keep up with the demand if the demand is actually substantial. There isn't a whole of awareness out there for the new Zunes. I also wonder what problems this first generation will have. I might just end up waiting for the second gen, by then their app store might actually have some decent stuff up.

When the second gen Zunes came out, did Microsoft have like a trade in deal with the previous generation? I would be willing to trade my old zune in with an extra $50-100 to get the second gen hd. I really want this new one but I also need more memory, stuck around 200mb left and its basically all music. Also would have liked to a have a black 32gb.

Could this be a hint to what's to come?
A recent Microsoft job listing could be hinting at the future expansion of Xbox Live. Specifically, the listing is for an Xbox Live Community Director in the Entertainment and Devices Division, whose job would entail managing the "Live community strategy and execution across a range of properties, from Xbox Live to Windows Mobile." The listing elaborates further, mentioning a "next-generation, Live-enabled casual and social gaming platform across the Web, the console, mobile and beyond." The community director is also expected to help craft a "strategy for integration with community and social efforts," across platforms like Windows Live and Facebook. The listing even mentions MSN Games.

I do not think they will be in high demand.
I think it will get great reviews. But I don't expect them to be in high demand unless the reviews show very favorable comparisons to the Ipod touch.
I have a feeling way too many reviewers will still give the nod to ipod, simply because of all the apps and games.
I myself would love to get my hands on the 32gb model.
This thing looks sweet.

I wanted to be an early adopter on this, but the storage space, just isn't there for me to make it worth my while.

Agreed. Apple's grip on the MP3 player space is too strong. It's going to take a whole lot of competition and generations of new hardware for Microsoft or some other company to make a large enough dent in Apple's market share in that space.

But in a few years it could all be moot and MP3 players may be a thing of the past where everything is integrated into a single device...which Apple is already way ahead of with the iPhone. again making it hard for the competition to catch up.
