ZUNE and your X360 - ZUNE HD Now in 64GB - Latest Update Now Supports AVI/XviD

In technology, there are 3 stages of people (you learn this in marketing 300 or whatever)

1) Early Adaptors - people who buy a product when it first launches. These are the testers that will indicate if the product is worth buying or not (of course, someone who pre-orders a zune would be an early adapter)

2) Regular purchaser - called many other titles. For the zune, the regular purchaser might take a risk for black friday....but other than that, it might be up to a year before they buy it. If this was launched in Jan, they might not really want to buy it until black firday. More than likely will wait till next black friday to buy the zune hd.

3) Stragglers - also called many other titles. To use a recent example, a straggler would be an iphone user. iphones are largely popular now and have been out for 3+ years. Regular consumer has already read the reviews and bought one. The straggler is the person who Didn't really care for it right then, wanted to wait for everything to get worked out, and still probably wouldn't buy it except that they know its the best choice for them

When it comes to the zune hd, i'm #2. My 80 gig zune doesn't work with my computer (nor my roommate's, nor does his 30 gig work with either) so we have to bum other people's laptops to sync music. I will buy one next year, but I am nowhere near the "I gotta have it!" stage

it's early adopter

With Xbox 360/Zune cross-platform functionality about to get better, i was wondering if i could somehow fix my split gamertag/zune profile dilemma. When I 1st got my Zune, I registered with my old gamertag/Windows Live ID (cengobengo). Since then I sold and bought another Xbox 360 and started a new gamertag (jengobengo).

So I've been using cengobengo with my Zune, and jengobengo on my 360. Would there be a way to transfer cengo to jengo? At least the Zune side of it...Since Microsoft kind of combined Zune and 360 stuff though, I doubt I can (I'm sure they don't allow combining or transferring of gamertags, what with gamerscore complications and MS point balance issues it might cause). I guess I'll have to try using jengobengo when I get a Zune HD and start all over...

i would just switch over to the one you want (i.e. log into zune using those credentials) you will loose play counts and awards, but who cares, they aren't worth anything, and no one looks.
The only good point MN made was about the RRoD. I'm going to wait it out because of potential problems with launch hardware. Plus, my Zune 30GB still works very well.
I understand being wary of a new product, but equating 360 issues to potential Zune HD unreliability is asinine.

Interesting, just saw you can change your Zune Tag for 800 MS points through the Zune website. If you use the same email/login as your gamertag, it will change your gamertag too.

Sweet. Entered. Thanks. *Crosses fingers*

$220 16GB the only reason I am considering the ZUNE HD (for now) is because if you know anything about the NVIDIA Tegra platform inside the ZUNE HD, theres basically an Overclocked XBOX 1 inside there which runs at 720p.

And given NVIDIA's ownership of the XBOX 1 GPU and emulation rights we can all see where this is going.

Also there could be some Adapter to the ZUNE HD or 360 controller which would allow you to use the 360 controller to play games on the ZUNE HD.

It is too bad it lacks a Simply Mic, and Camera so it can not use any Augemented Reality Aps.

I will reserve finally opinion till after 9-9-09 and see Apple's new iPod Touch line.

that and my $150 Best Buy gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

I am mostly holding out to see how easy it is to get divx to play on it. I know it won't support it natively but I am hoping that perhaps the conversion is faster or less picky. If I have to continue to fiddle with trying to download WMV's or convert video all the time I'll probably pass.

Or, It's possible the new Zune Marketplace and Zune HD integration really pushes me.

i entered the twitter thing, and got free audiobook of High Fidelity. love the book, love the movie, the audiobook needs work. BUT it does have a clip of Nick Honrby's new book. havent gotten to it yet though.

I'll probably wait until they work out the kinks and by then they'll probably have more games/apps on the Zune marketplace. I'm also wondering how it'll integrate with the 360.

Anybody need a Zune 120 for parts?
I could never get my HD to work properly so I tried to pry it open. Big mistake. Just made a hole in it.

I sure hope the ZUNE HD Succeeds.

Gaming confirmed:

The only thing holding me up is that it doesn't support .AVI, but I just found this discussion that says otherwise:
I was at the Chicago event in the Hancock Tower and all I could think about was how far I could get if I grabbed it out of the reps' hand and ran.

But seriously, the thing is sweet.
He explained the it will automatically downscale 720p movies put on it to play on the screen while storing them as 720p movies. So should you dock it, it will output them as HD movies.

Also, contrary to some of the things I've been reading, it handles, avi, H264, mp4 and a lot of the other standards out there no problem.

It is a sweet, sweet device and I can't wait to get it.
http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zune-hd/44881-zune-hd-support-avi-mp4-more.html

The official specs (see OP) don't mention .AVI support. I think I'm going to wait to hear impressions before I decide to bite.

I really want to get in on this, but I just can't. Not until I hear about .avi support or see if they will do a 64GB version. The 32GB version is just too small. That coupon is valid until October 31st though. So, could still be used later on.

MS has Got to be planning on Gaming with this thing.
I'm expecting XBOX Arcade importing, but that may be asking a bit much.
Can you imagine playing "Shadow Complex" on this thing? That would be pretty sweet.
And if they could make this work that way, I really think there would be a lot of XBOX 360 owners who would strongly consider getting one.

That deal is really going to pressure me into ordering one. There's nothing that is really holding me back that makes me not want it, so I think I'll go for it.

Having seen the videos on Arstechnica, it looks like the XBox intergration will involve watching HD movies on either the Xbox Or the Zune.

My guess is if they do go with Arcade games it will be old ones that have been out for a while like Uno and Doom. Shadow Complex would also be difficult to do without the controller and that's heavy duty unreal tech powering that game.

.avi is just a wrapper. I think what we really want is divx/xvid support (the standards on bittorent). You can put any codec inside an .avi file, so if the person that made that post was simply playing h.264 wrapped in .avi, I'm not impressed.

We need more info. It doesn't make sense to let the 360 do divx (albeit only while connected to live) and not the zunehd.

I've told the Zune software to monitor a folder on my external hard drive for music. I added a couple of CDs last night, but they're not in my collection in the zune software even though they're in the monitored folder. Do I have to manually refresh somehow?

new zune software and web site are up.

sw3.20 was available for my 8gb, although i had to get a new driver and reboot to get it. strange that they didn't build in the legacy support into the software. i didnt see any change on the 8gb device.

the software is more slick now. it was slick before, but its even more animated and fluid with the quick view tab. the fonts look more clear now, like they removed anti aliasing. overall it all looks good.

still waiting on my hd, should be here around 2:00pm.
Well I still have my 30 GB Zune and love it. Today I just bought a one month Zune Pass Card to try it out and I am loving it. For the exception of them not having a lot of the progressive rock I wanted, they still had a lot of great music. I easily got my $15 worth and will be sure to continue the service.
If you stop the subscription, does the music stop working? is this like Rhapsody then?

This can happen with external drives because once in a while windows will boot and assign a different drive letter. Happens to me all the time. You can fix it by just re-adding the external drive in the Zune software as a monitored folder, chances are it's a different drive letter.

So any HD reviews out yet?
If you stop the subscription, does the music stop working? is this like Rhapsody then?
Yep. You can't keep them.

EDIT:

Games, apps, Facebook and Twitter confirmed for the Zune HD later this year:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/zune-hd-3d-gaming-and-app-downloads-confirmed/
"Later this year, Zune plans to release free applications such as Twitter for Zune and Facebook for Zune, in addition to fun 3-D games such as "Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition," "Vans Sk8: Pool Service" and "Audiosurf(TM) Tilt." Games can be added to Zune HD via Zune Marketplace over the Wi-Fi connection or when connected to the Zune PC software."

Update: A bit more is revealed in a Seattle Times Q&A with Brian Seitz, Microsoft's Zune marketing manager. At the moment, the strategy is to keep all the apps and games free and developed in-house or in close collaboration with third parties -- no third-party SDK for devs to freely crank out apps just yet. Seitz is clear that games will be the primary focus of the "sometimes-connected"
God I want to grab a 32GB Zune HD, but my OG 30GB still works great, and I only really use it when I'm on my Xbox. I really wish they had some kind of "trade-up" plan where you could give them your old Zune and get some kind of discount. Hell, even if they only gave me like $50, I'd probably have to jump on it.

Just got paid today and I am trying hard not to buy one. Really want to wait and see what the word is on DivX and Xbox integration first. But it's hard not to get gadget lust on launch day.

I have an iPhone and love it. The Zune HD will have to do something really good for me to consider getting one. If it comes out with some must have games or cool Xbox 360 integration, I could pick one up. Sadly, I don't listen to music like I did in my youth. So, I don't really need it for playing music. Plus, I've always got my iPhone with me, which has 32 GB of space.
