There are quite a few free and free2play games and mods on steam. You can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

For those like me who have a giant hard-on for beat-em-ups, that Fist Puncher game has a demo on Desura and boy did it play as boring as it looked.

And sorry for making a post about games and not cards. Least I didn't mention a deal

This just in from John Cook at Valve:

Thank you for all the feedback during this beta. We've been spending a lot of time helping game developers get their Trading Cards built and released, and will continue to release new sets of cards twice a week for the foreseeable future. Participating is up to the developers, so if there’s a game you’d like to see trading cards for, you should let them know.

We've also had time to work on some new features for the beta that we hope to release in the next week or so, based on feedback we've received:

Trade Offers: send an offer to another user of items to trade, even if they're offline, that will let them accept, decline, or make a counter-offer. You'll only be able to send trade offers to friends to start with, but if people like it we'll look into expanding it. This will also let you send an item as a gift to a friend.

Booster Packs: these will drop randomly for users who have received all their card drops from playing any given game, and who are continuing to participate in the community. Each booster pack will contain three cards for that game, and may potentially contain foils. The rate of drops will be based on how often cards are being used, to prevent too many flooding into the economy.

Game Collector Badge: A badge that grants XP based on how many games you own on Steam, to ensure that long-time users are rewarded.

Trading Card Binder: A way of showing off all the cards you've collected, including those you've crafted into a badge.
Interesting...

So basically: "Booster Packs" will be available for people who have exhausted their card drops for a game and will give them more cards. This takes out a reliance on the marketplace, to an extent. It also puts more cards in the economy. More cards = lower market value.

Game collector badge - cool but now somewhat worthless as there is very little incentive to raise Steam levels. I suppose most of us will level up to like level 100 though when this is implemented.

I'm actually happy with all of these additions (save the trade offers, seems like it could be spammed too much). The booster packs could be very rare drops and if so it won't hurt the market too much.

Damn - will have to pick up Rome Total War for that price.  I think I even have a penny guide for that somewhere around here ;).

Thanks yet again to the OP for keeping the thread title up to date - probably would have missed this otherwise.

Tower Wars - Purchased on Amazon for $4.79 (plus taxes) - cost to me after cards sold - $2.07
Hmm... that's not too bad. I'd rather have Amazon monies than Steam wallet though. The chance at foil is extremely tempting, but I feel like it'll be a while for me since I just got one today.

What does that mean? Just that they keep playing?

Mr. NinjaSquirrel is indeed the man.

I was wondering the same thing.

I'm with you there, I almost didn't buy Triple Town because Amazon credit is so much more valuable to me. Unfortunately, I'm a tower defense sucker and the allure of a foil was too much.

This burgeoning hoarder culture (horticulture?) has, to me, been irritating over the years because I immerse myself in world news every day and I've become hypersensitive to the poor quality of life of people who were haplessly born into fucked regions. I cringe very slightly when people openly admit that they bought something that they never intend to use; meanwhile Unicef is urgently asking for donations so they can provide Syrians with stuff like water.

Note: I have hundreds of Steam games but everything that I bought and isn't bundle filler is something I plan on playing.

No disrespect intended, and I appreciate your sense of social obligation, I really do. And while reading your post I felt a few pangs of guilt myself, although I try not to knowingly buy games I have no interest in playing; I'm not that much of a collector in that sense.

But since you bring it up. I don't know what kind of work you do and what kind of stresses you may have in your life, what kind of downtime you require. But it seems to me that the hours necessary to play hundreds of games could be put to better use if humanitarian causes are a major concern of yours. I know I regret all the hours I spent on games that are in the mere "time-wasters" category. That's why I've decided that many of the games I now own will not get played after all; they're just not worth that much of my time. I know some of us older members have expressed an appreciation for games that can be completed in a few hours and still provide a satisfying, polished experience. I love gaming, but it's not my career, and there are few works of art in any genre that are worth hundreds of hours of someone's life. I do feel concern for all the potential that's going to waste when twenty and thirty-year-olds are spending so much time raiding, accumulating massive collections of virtual wares that have no bearing on real life, etc. You can't control how others spend their money or time, but if helping others is important to you...well, you can control that. I completely sympathize with your distress at seeing people coast through lives of luxury oblivious to the suffering of others. There are not a lot of people with your kind of awareness. It puts you in a rare place to do something about it.

I suspect I'm preaching to the choir here...you probably work full-time at a non-profit or something, and have a very legitimate need for games as a de-stressor. But when you mentioned hundreds of games that you planned to play, I decided I'd risk it. ;) I'm sure you understand.

Sorry everyone for being such a square. Couldn't resist the opportunity to stir the pot. Now back to your regularly scheduled card and backlog talk.

Hey, sorry if this is kinda an obvious question, but what are the point of these cards?  Do they just sit in your profile.  I was just accepted into the beta and I was wondering why people actually bought them for cash.

You can collect the set which will allow you to craft a badge. Crafting a badge gives you XP for your Steam level, a random coupon, and a themed emote and wallpaper. That's about it.

ah.... that makes a lot more sense. Mostly just extra stuff to add to the community aspect. That's cool. I just hope I get some nice coupons. Thanks a lot for the answer

I'm sure months and months from now crazy people with levels of 50+ will be reward with some kind of tangible bounty a la the potato ARG but I'll just take free GabeN bucks.

Honestly, if you're going to craft simply for coupons, you're going about it all wrong. Seeing as the majority of the coupons are in the lower range and don't stack with sales, you'd be better off selling your cards and using that money to buy whatever you're interested in.

Anyone hear about this yet:

Charlie’s Games Mega Bundle Pack

Do you like the look of my games but are in a dilema about which one to get? Are you fretting that you might pick the WRONG ONE? Do your friends call you names like ‘stinky pants’ or ‘poopy slacks’ because you like the look of a different game to them? Well fret and dilema no more with the Charlie’s Games Mega Pack! Yes, that’s right! The Charlie’s Games Mega Pack!

Yes, with the Charlie’s Games mega pack you not only get the game you think you want, but all the others too! It’s the no risk option that’s sure to satisfy!

And that’s not all! A copy of the Charlie’s Games Mega Pack doesn’t just get you a copy of Bullet Candy, Bullet Candy Perfect AND Irukandji, oh no! You get 3 copies! That’s right, 3 copies! One of each game for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux! AND you’ll get a collection of links to bonus bits and bobs!

But wait a minute, i know what you’re thinking! Surely this must cost much more than just buying one of the games individually? Right? WRONG! You can get the Charlie’s Games Mega Pack for as little as $1.

Yes, you can pay as much as you wish from $1 up! ‘What’s in it for me if i pay more than the minimum?’ i hear you cry. Well, aside from a calm, happy, contented feeling that comes with helping a developer pay the bills and write new games, if you pay equal to or greater than the current asking price for a copy of Scoregasm (indiegames.com arcade game of the year 2011), i’ll send you a copy of that too(yes, it registers on Steam)!

You can also buy a copy of the Mega Pack for a friend! Just fill in their email in the box provided after you’ve bought a copy and i’ll send some links over to them!

If you want a Mega Pack of your own to love, cherish and nurture (you get a copy for Windows, OS X and 32bit Linux, plus Scoregasm if you pay over $9.99) then simply type what you think it’s worth in the box thing below (as long as it’s over $1 so that Paypal doesn’t take most of it). Remember to click ‘Return to Merchant’ after you’ve paid, or you might have to wait a little while to get your links.

Final trading card report of the day:

Purchased Zack Zero for $9.99, sold three cards to make my net cost $1.79.

Not bad for a very recent game (and looks pretty cool) but I will note I got no foils, but lucked out when I got two drops for the rarest card (Zack Zero).  Done for now.  We'll see what Thursday brings.

DAMMIT FOX

EDIT: Yeah, you just got me to buy Zack Zero. I have never purchased a game at full price on Steam. With my luck, I'll get the cheapest cards and spend $5 on the game. That's almost 2 bundles man!

You scoundrel! My Zack Zero cards aren't even selling. Even if they do, looks like I'll have spent about $4 on the game. Give me a foil baby, no whammies, big foil, no whammies...!

I don't play games as much as I used to, especially compared to the marathons way back when I had a red and black lumberjack with the hat to match. I've actually tried to kick this lifelong vice because I could have been a fucking Jeopardy champion by now if even half that time was reapportioned to other things. I once went to the Betty Ford clinic for this bullshit.

Half of my library consists of interactive junk mail from bundles that had one or two games that I wanted added to my Steam account. I've played maybe 2600 hours of the ones I like so they're not going to waste.

And, yes, I plan to play them gradually and I don't have to rush because Steam will live forever and I will die tomorrow.

Mr. Fox, however, has either 400 games and 600 hours played or 600 games and 400 hours played on Raptr, I don't recall which combination. No wonder people don't want to eat ham and eggs with him, and that is meaningful because that shit is delicious.

Helping others: I plan on moving to Columbia indefinitely to volunteer; I'm aiming for November or December and the wheels are in motion. Fuuck white-collar, fuuck blue-collar, fuuck pink-collar and fuuck your dad's collar with lipstick on it -- it ain't your mom's. Seriously doing this. I'm beginning to learn Spanish and I get to skip to the fun parts because I can speak, like, kindergarten-level Japanese lol and learning that taught me more about English and linguistics in general. I already have the foundation in place.

(the hostility is completely feigned so go fuck yourself)

My Zack Zero cards aren't selling and even when they do, I'll make about $6. Foxxy, I demand you reimburse me seeing as this is ALL. YOUR. FAULT.

To buy or not to buy FTL right now... I, too, believe the card trading system will be open by summer sale, and A LOT of people will be buying and selling.

If you want to play it now, I say buy it now. $5 is the lowest is has been and the card drops will bring it down to probably around $3.5

It might hit $2.50 in a month during the summer sale though, but the cards may be completely tanked by then, still it would be $2.50 minus the cards you sell.

Finished a 'playthrough' of Monster Loves You.  It's a quaint little 'game' that consists of a series of menu-selected choices and consequences.  For free, I can't complain.  Would I recommend anyone buy it?  Not outside of a bundle.

FTL card prices are nearly rock bottom at the moment.  Unless you absolutely have to play it now I'd say there's no reason to pick it up before the Summer Sale.  At the very least it'll be 50% off again.

In before "That sounds like a spiritual predecessor to The Walking Dead"

Boo on Fox. He paid 9.99 for ZZ, when I clearly posted two damned pages ago that you can get it from GMG for $8.
True, but then I would be converting real life money into silly steam bux that after this trading card thing I would not say are equal to real life money. Czech maid!

If I buy it (FTL), i KNOW I'll be playing it, everybody says it's addictive. BUT, buying it now gives me the amazon free game (I know, it's bad) too, so, that's $1.25 less ;)

The bad thing is I want to finish Max Payne 3 to continue my Dark Souls game.

Unlike the Walking Dead, this actually has deeper choice and consequence! Also, I'll qualify my last remarks in that if anyone has a young child this game would be perfect for them. For what it is, it's very well done.

You know I didn't think to figure that into the mix. I got free games from Triple Town, FTL, and Tower Wars on Amazon.

Idled all of my cards from FTL and sold them for about $1.56. Not bad, but not great. Still no foils at all for me.
Odd that a game like that would have card prices bottom out so quickly and then 1..2..3.. KICK IT! has cards that go for nearly a buck each. I think I'm going to hold off on FTL unless I see it in a bundle. I want to play it, but it can wait and it doesn't sound as if cards are going to make it free.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to brake even on Zack Zero if any of these cards ever sell.  I've already sold one for $2.xx.  The other two I have listed are around $3 on the market right now.
