Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I'm wondering on CoH. The base game was fun (never finished it, but damn did I play it for like 8 hours the first day), but I'm not sure if the expansions were are worth it.

Lol, a quick glance at the Metacritic scores: 93, 87, 70. xD

Anyone have first-hand experience?

Tempted to get the Genesis collection but I can't say I'd play that enough to make it worth it, even at $7.49. My backlog is way too big right now.
As tempting as all these classics are, I'm going to go with past experience.

"Oh, I got Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for 360 from Goozex today!"

Played for an hour. Never played again.
Noooooo! I've got...well, FOUR packs like that so far.

The original for the PSP, the second one for both the PS3 and 360, and the third for PC (aside from some pack I got on Steam with the same thing) :whistle2:D
Any recommendations for Shining Force and Shining in the Darkness?

I'm looking at a lot of these classics, thinking, "Would I have more fun with, oh, anything on my wishlist?"

But then, it's hard to argue with 10 games for $1.87...
Shining Force was one of my all time favorite games. I actually own Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force 1-3, and Shining Force was my favorite out of all of them.

Straight up SRPG with a fantasy setting.

Shining in the Darkness was more of a dungeon crawler/RPG from what I remembered, so no strategy elements that are found in Shining Force 1-3.
No, it is not. You need to use gamepad mapping software for that.

Alright, I just went back to try it and you indeed only press a button and it automatically attaches to whatever surface.....as long as you're using the controller, so you could call it "some console bs" if you will. With the kb/m however you do need to aim it as Draekon said.
pretty sure you can aim it a bit in the ps3 version with the right control stick but definitely more precision possible with a mouse.

picked up Alpha Protocol.

also amusing sounding game, RTS with time travel, pretty bad on the reviews side though. http://store.steampowered.com/app/109700/

I do believe you are totally missing the point ;)

Alright peeps, here's my two cents anyway in regards to all the Sega + Sonic talk:

If you have any interest in getting the old Genesis titles (or Sonics in particular), at the very least make sure you grab Sonic 3 & Knuckles. (Be it in a pack, or separate)

Of all the classic Sonic titles, 3 & Knuckles really shows as the most advanced game in the series. You're getting the full third game as it was originally planned* which easily delivers on the most content and mechanics. Playable Sonic/Tails/Knuckles, with (what I consider anyway) the best/most intricate stages in the series to date. It's pretty much the greatest version of classic sidescrolling Sonic, before they forgot how to make good Sonic games.

Also, for $0.74 separate (or $1.78 a 10-pack) it should be freaking illegal to not own Gunstar Heroes in some form. That game really is raw, undiluted fun courtesy of Treasure.

* (3 & Knuckles locked together is what Sonic 3 was originally planned to be. They then ran into time constraints and had to leave out half the content, later releasing it as Sonic & Knuckles)
Total War mega pack worth it?
ABSOLUTEY. I have all of them except Shogun 2, which I will pass on once again. The pack is awesome, and at $17, OMFG what a deal.

Even with all the deals going on, I'm not getting anything. Already have AP and CoH (base game). I have zero interest in old Sega games, they'd be a nostalgia purchase and something I would never play for more than 5 minutes.

Probably for the best. Should be saving cash for the deals coming at the end of the year.

Grah with Torchlight 2 most likely being delayed untill December I need some sales on stuff I really want....come on Bastion for $7.50 or less!
Even at $2, AP doesn't seem like a deal >_>
Agreed. This is something I would buy if I didn't have a backlog of majorly awesome games already waiting for me. Alpha Protocol looks like a perfect way to fill a couple of weeks between Steam sales. But as it stands, I don't need another mediocre title at this point, at any price. The 20-odd hours (?) it would take to complete this is more precious to me than the $2.00.

Steam is teaching me to be judicious and measured. If it wasn't on my Steam wish list,I probably didn't want it that much, after all.

What an excellent example of "opportunity costs", I may end up using this in my econ lecture next week.

I'm interested in a handful of the Sega Classics games, but I'm not sure if I want to buy any whole packs.

If I pick up, say, just Gunstar Heroes and a Sonic game what is my launcher going to look like? A Sega Classics Launcher with just Gunstar and Sonic inside, or will there be 39 other games in grey that I don't have access to?

Will the system make me download 30MB of game data that I'm not using, or will it just be 3MB of the games I've purchased?

Picked up Alpha Protocol. Had a mild interest in the game but passed on it before at $5 as I knew I wouldn't be playing it anytime soon and knew I'd be seeing it on sale for many times to come. Have a huge backlog but $2 is too good of a deal.
I know I'm gonna love picking abilities and upgrading them, although it seems like a very similar game in that respect to Deus Ex: HR which I'm more interested in.

Classic Sega games, yeah I would play that a couple of times for 5 minutes for nostalgia's sake, but would never touch it again. Too many games unplayed, not enough time.

Only Total War game I really want is Shogun 2, and waiting for that to drop to at least sub $10.

I'm pretty damn certain that it only shows the games you own in the selector menu. (Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the only one that showed up in mine. Nothing greyed out or inaccessible)

As for the game data, you'll have to download the emulator itself. Aside from that the rest of the data should be on a per-rom basis. (Though didn't someone mention 3.4 gigs for the entire collection? Seems pretty high even for that many titles)

I think ill pick up Alpha Protocol. I love me some stealth action games. Im still debating whether or not to pick up the dreamcast games too.
(Though didn't someone mention 3.4 gigs for the entire collection? Seems pretty high even for that many titles)
Yeah, this is what's kinda scaring me.

These go on sale pretty frequently, and I think I'd rather buy a 74-cent game here and there than end up with a ton of clutter I'm not interested in.

I don't have any Sega nostalgia from when I was a kid, but I did play some Gunstar Heroes, Sonic and Vectorman, and I'd like to try some of the RPGs (the Shining series and Landstalker) but I don't really need a bunch of clunky fighters clogging my system.

Good call. It starts out OK, but by the end, I wanted my time back. Unless you have no backlog, I can't recommend it at all, even at $2. Deus Ex: HR, Mass Effect, Splinter Cell, and even Perfect Dark are much better choices.

I don't understand why it says 3.4 gigs. I just initiated the download and it was altogether a bit under 200MB. (I own all the titles in the pack + sonics).

You wouldn't know it from the screenshots in Steam, but CoH is an RTS game, you can't really compare it to Battlefield. It is an excellent title for RTS fans.

Alpha Protocol is like a weird, buggy, broken version of Deus Ex. I found the game to be pretty damn good once you learn how to sort of deal with the game's shitty mechanics. For $2 I think people should definitely buy it.

Yeah I just saw this as I was doing some more reading .... thanks though - that answers my question :)

I agree. I just beat this last week, and had tons of fun. I thought it was worth the $6 I paid, $2 is a no-brainer for at least 10hrs of game play.

Steam......running......sloooowww. Might pickup Alpha, CoH Complete is too high a price to get put in a backlog. sure it'll be cheaper later on, think it has been

200 MB sounds more right for a few dozens of Sega Genesis games. Seems like the person's quote was misinterpreted:
The main upside to having a single installer is that it doesn't clutter up your games menu with 40 or so new entries.

The launcher is pretty simple and it allows you to make settings to apply to all games. You kind of flip through them like TV channels. The games themselves are only a few MB apiece. I've got all the packs and some of the Sonic games and it's 3740 MB.
I'm going to assume he installed all of the classics and then some (maybe the Dreamcast games?), because an emulator plus a few dozens 16-bit era games aren't going to total up to almost 4 GB.

It's an error on Steam's part. When you go to initiate the download it says "Disc space required: 3238MB." However, once it actually starts downloading, the actual download is only 200MB or so.

I beat Alpha Protocol on 360 last year and am still debating picking it up for $2. There is a lot I could do on a 2nd play through, but not really sure I have the time with all the new games coming soon.

Been wanting to get into the CoH series, but I think that it'll be cheaper during the Winter Sale. Realistically I'm not going to get a chance to play them before then anyways.

Same boat with Shogun 2. I love the Total War series, but I can wait to pick this one up when its a bit cheaper.

Company of Heroes and Alpha Protocol for $4, awesome.. Was debating on Sonic DX and one of the Sega Genesis packs, but might end up convincing myself for the Dreamcast Collection and the big genesis collection. Wish the genesis sonics were bundled in, that's what I was hoping to get, but eh. Probably wouldn't even play them much anyway.

Comix Zone! I completely forgot that existed, but now I remember it being totally awesome. I also played the crap out of Golden Axe and remember its annoying title "music."

I'm going to have to nitpick through the list because I'm not familiar with many of them (I grew up only having only a PC with limited exposure to stuff like this, since I had stuff from Apogee and such).

Don't hold your breath for it being cheaper than $2. If you are thinking the whole pack will be cheaper... maybe, but I doubt it.

I really liked Alpha Protocol, though I am loathe to admit it because I keep ending up in arguments with Chris Avellone's most bull-headed fanboys over the dumbest crap.

AP really plays like a rough version of Syphon Filter with, as you should expect from FPS/RPG since Deus Ex, really stupid skill points restricting your actions and a goofy aim system for them. The music and production values are top notch and, as much as everyone else hates them, the boss fights are really cleverer than I expect for a genre (Rather, a specific genre flavor. If I include MGS the thought process fails completely.) that usually doesn't give us ANYTHING good in boss battles.

The game has a nice sort of rolling plot with a lot of variance and things coming back to bite you in the ass. The game itself doesn't change much, if at all, though for your choices. Only the cutscenes and a few boss battles might be thrown in or skipped depending on arbitrary conditions. It's not good enough or quick enough to be replayed to enjoy these little things and the plot itself is a little weak. Great characters though.

If you're playing it, I recommend pistols and stealth for their broken abilities. Splash a little tech to get the ability to EMP bypass a hacking minigame as the later ones can get too difficult and you don't use those useless hunks of crap for anything else and TURN OFF YOUR MIN/MAX INSTINCT. Just roll with the decisions. The timed conversation choices are a little dumb and you might want to replay one or two but don't sweat the small stuff. This game gives you percentage buffs for just about every choice you make.

"Oh, I got Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for 360 from Goozex today!"

Played for an hour. Never played again.
HAHAHA. Exactly!
Alpha Protocol is like a weird, buggy, broken version of Deus Ex. I found the game to be pretty damn good once you learn how to sort of deal with the game's shitty mechanics. For $2 I think people should definitely buy it.
AP is EASILY worth $2.

I traded some Team Fortress 2 items for Alpha Protocol.

The gameplay videos exude a Second Sight and Freedom Fighters vibe -- two games that I enjoyed despite iffy production values and rough edges.

Edit -NM I was wrong. The guy wasnt a developer. SO I guess anyones guess is fine for TL2 release date. I still bet its sadly going to be November/December which I think is stupid on their part since it may put them too close to Diablo 3's release.

Alien Solider for $.74!!!
This is a treasure classic originally unreleased in the U.S ... it's like a boss centric, deeper contra/gunstar heroes.

EDIT:
Just get Genesis Classics pack 4...
it's got almost all of the top class genesis games for $1.87

Bit on the Dreamcast Collection and Lucid (looks interesting for messing around with on my laptop anyway).

Love Genesis games, but I'd rather collect them on my actual Genesis (nice price on Steam though). Plus I've bought my favorite game of all time, Sonic 2... 3 freaking times already (on Genesis, Gamecube, and PSP). I really need to stop buying it lol

That's disappointing, but I'd rather wait for a polished game. My husband and I want to play together, so they've got two sold copies when they release it.
