Is it true you have to have a Steam 'level of at least 10 to get foil cards?
Yeah, according to the FAQ you do.

I find it pretty lame that you only get a set amount of card drops, but I made $17 from the whole thing, crafting some badges and getting a profile background I like, so I'm a happy camper. ;)
Both of these for me. I dealt with STL weather, and just STL in general, for so many years. The day I got out of Misery . . . I mean "Missouri", I was a happy man.
EXACTLY. And, funny enough, we both escaped to California. Really nice change of pace.

y u waste money on badges/profile background sbiroz

On a semi random note, I just bought the HIB and have steam keys to Dear Esther and Awesomenauts I'm going to post. Hopefully it'll help some CAGs and won't be lurched.

Dear Esther: QWNK2-Y8E3M-28QIB

Awesomenauts: 6XHTL-7Z0PZ-E8VCC
I just want them to add it to something I own:lol: I guess indie games aren't very high on the list of possible titles though.
Me too! The only game I've got to "play" for cards is Portal 2 and I own that because the PS3 version came with a Steam code.

Managed to get all the Borderlands 2 cards I needed for $1 or less except for Gaige, still need that one.

Wow, just got it for $1. That took a long ass time of hitting F5. But the feeling of accomplishment is so worth it. This is like its own game, this marketplace.

What the heck... I didn't gain a level when I unlocked the badge... Apparently I misunderstood and thought one badge = 1 level increase, but it's just 100xp which may increase your level.
There's a Steamworks Developer Badge? It's apparently worth 500 points.

Is this something that is widely known to the steam community, and I'm just finding out about it now?
I didn't know about it until I saw it on someone's profile a couple of hours ago.
I didn't know about it until I saw it on someone's profile a couple of hours ago.
Seems like a great way to flood the steam workshop with trash. =/

EDIT: Assuming it's for steam workshop developers and not just to steam accounts of people who are devs of games using steamworks, which would be sort of weird, but not terribly out of line with things Valve does.

If anyone has an extra invite for me it would be much appreciated. My profile url you can send it to is - http://steamcommunity.com/id/thedukeofspook

I've signed up but not yet received my own invite so when I do I will gladly give those invites away to people on here who want it. Hopefully I get them by tomorrow. I got Borderlands 2 recently and really want to play it right now but I am going to hold off until I get into this beta and can earn some cards from playing it.

Hmmm. The first Portal 2 badge was worth 100xp which bumped me up a level.

Then go ahead. You're not going to get better drops by holding off, and if you enjoy it you'll want to continue playing it after you're in the beta.

I'm guessing it's for the latter, and not just because the example profile TE linked to looks like an EA MTL employee. But mostly.
Dammit, now I'm tempted to level up to 10 for the chance of foil cards.
didn't know you needed to be lvl. 10 to get foil cards, don't know how rare they are, I have only gotten 2 so far and I sold them both on the steam market for a cool $20 profit which I spent on other trading cards (its a vicious cycle)
Dammit, now I'm tempted to level up to 10 for the chance of foil cards.
That is exactly what I did. No luck on foils yet, but I've only done Borderlands 2. I still have HL2, Portal 2, and Don't Starve to try.
Invites are only like a quarter each on the market, you know.
$.03 last time I checked, which was yesterday I believe.

Damn, you've made $20 just from foil cards? Perhaps I need to rethink my position of privately laughing at the people on my friends list who have bought badges and leveled up to level 10 & beyond.

Only got one foil. :whistle2:(

I'm stupid and have already gotten all my card drops (except for TF2, DOTA 2, and CS:GO, since I can't), so leveling up to get foils seems kind of dumb when I don't have any more drops for possible foils, but hopefully they add a lot more participating games.

I've made $15 from selling all my basic cards so far, so maybe I'll just buy a bunch of TF2 cards to craft the badge and level it up. Spoder looked into it and it's like $3.50 a set, so $3.50 a level? I've gotta do that a bunch of times though...
I made sure to complete the second part of the community badge before going for the card drops. Only got one foil. :whistle2:(
I was at level 6 when I first got in the beta. So I don't really have a way to get to level 10 without buying cards. The best I've been able to do is get up to level 8.

Yep after the steam fees, I made about $13 from a Pyro card and $7 from a Portal 2 card. I just spent another $6 I made from those cards and crafted another Portal 2 badge which gave me a companion cube emoticon which sells for $7 on the steam market so it looks like I'll make my money back on that.
Spoder looked into it and it's like $3.50 a set, so $3.50 a level? I've gotta do that a bunch of times though...
It's one badge (100xp) per level until you reach level 10 - then it's two badges (200xp) per level until you reach level 20 - then it's three badges (300xp) ... and so on.

Each game has only 5 badge stages, so you won't be able to keep leveling up forever using sets of TF2 cards.
How far away are you? What's your level?
5. :\

6 after I use an emote and build a badge, so technically the first badge I build will take me to level 7, but I have to drop another $10 getting to level 10.

Basically I have to spend all my card money to get to level 10, lol.
Each game has only 5 badge stages, so you won't be able to keep leveling up forever using sets of TF2 cards.
Wasn't planning on going over level 10, honesly. 5 stages is fine for me.
Damn, you've made $20 just from foil cards? Perhaps I need to rethink my position of privately laughing at the people on my friends list who have bought badges and leveled up to level 10 & beyond.
Haven't crafted any badges but I figure since I'm only one badge/100 xp from level 10 I'll wait a bit for the TF2 cards to keep tanking in prices then buy them up when they're like $0.10 each (they're $0.30ish now).

It's the latter, I've got a friend who did some dev work for Nuclear Dawn and has one, but I don't have one for my Workshop creation.

Okay, so how I do I know what's a normal card and what's foil?

I got Axton; Zero; and Handsome Jack for cards in my Inventory.

A foil card will say foil.

Out of curiousity, do I have to own the game to craft a badge for it? Like, if I download Team Fortress, can I craft a badge? If I just buy Borderlands 2 cards without owning the game, can I craft a badge?

I'd assume you need to own it. I don't qualify for any Dota 2 drops because I haven't spent enough in the store, and there's no "progress" meter for a Dota 2 badge on my page.
Okay, so how I do I know what's a normal card and what's foil?

If you got a foil card, you will see (Foil) beside the name of your card, eg. Axton (Foil). Unlike real foil collectible cards, these digital foil cards do not look very different from their normal counterparts. The value only lies in it's rarity drop.

You don't have to own the game, but if you play the game, you will get 50% of the cards from that set. As long as you got a complete set of cards, you can use them to craft a badge.
