Why did I just see a masked man on TNA run into the ring????
Why did I just see a masked man on TNA run into the ring????
who knows and he backed off without a fight, kinda pointless
Why the fuck did TNA come back from commercial for 10 seconds, then go back into another break?
they did that like 4 times in the first hour

I've really just been watching Raw, and it hasn't been terrible. Not awesome, but at least watchable. The lack of Hart is a bit weird after weeks of all over the place guest hosts, but at least we know he's coming back. People that don't know he signed are probably wondering why in the hell he's there.

This Styles/Angle match is great, but it's not like that's shocking or anything.

Wow this is one of the better TNA matches in a very long time.
who knows and he backed off without a fight, kinda pointless
I think the point was to say "we're not going to do false finishes here in TNA, we're about competition," but it was told in a muddled and clumsy Russo way. The announcers really didn't hit on that point, either.

But, really, I think that was the point.

Other than the double commercial whammy earlier, Angle/Styles is hot fire.
So, TNA has ripped off RoH's 1000000000 finisher/2and.999999 kick out format?
Yeah. ROH invented that format. Really. Honest.
Yeah. ROH invented that format. Really. Honest.
I'm not saying they invented it but they were the most well known who abused it.

I enjoy you gushing over the Hogan / TNA deal, at mere face value, and profusely shitting on it tonight.

fucking incredible..

first time in ages that i have been on the edge of my seat and full excitement for 3 hours.

what a main event! the nostalgia was incredible

will dl raw later

So what was the ending? I decided to watch Vinnie Mac kick Bret in the balls
I enjoy you gushing over the Hogan / TNA deal, at mere face value, and profusely shitting on it tonight.
What? I did not gush over the Hogan/TNA deal.
So what was the ending? I decided to watch Vinnie Mac kick Bret in the balls
Foley gets backstage. Kicks in the door where Val/TBP are playing strip poker. He goes down the hall and Bishoff tells him to fall in line. Foley goes to punch him, Hall/Nash/Xpac beat him up, Hogan comes in the room, takes off his glasses and looks disappointed.

The end.
I'm not saying they invented it but they were the most well known who abused it.
most well known? again, no.

which show?
What? I did not gush over the Hogan/TNA deal.
I'm not going to sift through pages of wrestling banter, but: Yes. Yes, you did.

Maybe "gush" wasn't the best word.

But, at least Val Venis is back, right, Sporadic!?

Terrible Raw ending. Ugh. Bret looks like the biggest sissy-slash-idiot ever thanks to the opening and closing segments, but he is a better promo than I remembered. Possibly because almost everyone on their TV now bores me to tears, who knows.

Big laughs at the 4 slightly audible 'tards during the Bret/Vince segment chanting for Hogan. Yeah.

So this is fucking scary: TNA debuted Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Scott Hall & Xpac, & Jeff Hardy in the same hour and still managed to put on a fucking atrocious hour of television. Not even interesting in a "I'm morbidly curious" way. After the first hour it settled a bit but still didn't do much to hold me, although I do like me some Eric Bischoff, so I'm glad to see him back. That main event was fun as well.

Raw kind of stunk but, whether it's fair or not, gets a pass from me just due to the surreal sight of Bret in the ring again. I did like Legacy growing some temporary balls, I just hope it's not yet another swerve where they wind up beating down some clueless face. The only thing I noticed about the final segments were on one channel I had Bret Hart confronting Vince McMahon in the ring, and on the other I had Val Venis and Mick Foley breathing hard on each other in a dark hallway. Those chumps ain't got nothin' on Heidenreich and Snitsky.

I enjoyed the main event, and seeing old faces. Although It could have been way better. They basically showed most of them during the first hour.

Who else in the wrestling world abused that format more than RoH?

TNA's ending.

Um, no I didn't. Click find last posts by this user. I watched TNA and enjoyed the trainwreck but that's about it.

If you couldn't tell that the Val Venis post was a joke, well...

old school ECW made the false finish popular in wrestling, I think Shane Douglas was the first to do that there. I flipped to Raw during commercial breaks and saw the same shit I see every week there. I will def. be watching UFC Fight Night Live next Monday over Raw. WWE is entertaining to the 12 year old mind. I think Vince actually has Nickelodeon writers doing his shows nowadays.

I finally got home not too long ago and, holy crap, did this thread blow up. Was either show (or both) that good or should it just be attributed to general excitement? No spoilers, please, I still need to watch.
I had fun flipping between the two shows tonight. Made me remember the good old days.
Yeah, although I bitched a lot, it was cool to be able to switch back and forth again. I have a feeling that nostalgia would probably wear off after another month of stuff like this, though.

Lol Did anyone else see the "What are you doing?!? Hulk Hogan has come to TNA!" commercial during Raw's last commercial break?

I watched all of TNA and caught the very end of RAW. I don't know if my TV sends out a Nielsen rating, I don't even know if that is still how they do TV ratings. I do know that I wanted to vote for something other than RAW.

In between the huge, crazy clusterfuck that was TNA, there were a few future feuds that emerged...

Hogan/Bischoff v. Foley/Jarrett (probably) - It really could go either way and turn out good or pants-shitting bad. Like everything else tonight, it was completely frantic and seemed like it wasn't planned out well.

Flair and AJ v. ??? - I don't know if tonight signalled the end of the Angle's pursuit of AJ for the title. Their match was good but it had way too many false finishes/finishing maneuvers. I'll give credit though, when Angle hit that crazy looking top rope Angle slam, I thought it was over so they got me ala Shawn Michaels v. Undertaker with the tombstone pin from WM 25. I think I like the idea of Flair being AJ's manager. At best, AJ will improve his interviews and come across as a more legitimate champion. Also, maybe it'll keep Flair out of the ring as a wrestler. He's still good but he won't top his retirement match against Michaels. All that said, it could go horribly wrong although I don't have any specific scenarios in mind.

Team 3d v. The Nasty Boys - No, oh god fucking no. Look, I'm a fan of the Dudleys but they're not exceptionally relevant in 2010. They're as relevant today as the Nasty Boys were in fucking 1993. Get this shit off TV.

Overall, the production "values" of TNA showed through with brutal clarity. Hall referencing "Easy E", Bischoff telling the fans to make some noise, you're on TV, the barbed wire match being replaced, Hogan mentioning that he was in the back all day when we were watching limo progress for an hour. All that was amateur as fuck. And all that needs to get fixed quick as hell for this little experiment to mean anything.
Lol Did anyone else see the "What are you doing?!? Hulk Hogan has come to TNA!" commercial during Raw's last commercial break?
I wish I had. That sounds like the only clever thing TNA did tonight.
Hogan mentioning that he was in the back all day when we were watching limo progress for an hour. All that was amateur as fuck. And all that needs to get fixed quick as hell for this little experiment to mean anything.
I was laughing my ass off about that.
Bischoff telling the fans to make some noise, you're on TV
That was the ring announcer...

I watched Impact's first hour, laughed at it being a complete clusterfuck, and was glad that I decided to watch Raw in full as the Bret-Vince stuff was compelling all the way though. Much of the reason for that, aside from the performances, is that they didn't do too much tonight. Bret showed up, made amends (for now) with Shawn, tried to do the same with Vince, but couldn't because Vince had to be, well, Vince and get the last word. He got revenge on Bret for Bret's '97 cheap shot, and after leaving himself open for a superkick only for that to not happen, they did SOMETHING physical to pay off a night full of tension while still leaving plenty of options open for the future.

Match-wise, Orton-Kofi was an awesome TV match that didn't do too much and furthered the Orton-Legacy split s-l-o-w-l-y, while Sheamus-Bourne was a pleasant surprise that put Bourne in a major spot on the show and continued Sheamus' run as a killer heel. DX-Jerishow was also quite good, and the U.S. title contendership thing...end and MVP thankfully won. Plus, they seemed to break up his team with Henry, so maybe he'll actually win this and do something meaningful. Also, Miz's new theme rules, and him coming out and basically rejecting Maryse made me laugh.

HEY!

Raw Quotes -
Roberts - IT IS MY HONOR TO INTRODUCE TONIGHT’S GUEST HOST. MAKING HIS FIRST APPEARANCE ON RAW IN OVER 12 YEARS - BRET HART!
Bret - Well, I guess Hell froze over! I know there’s a lot of people wondering why I’m here tonight, and why now. But ya know, I’ve hada long time to think about things - it’s been 12 years and it’s an amazing feeling! For the last few years, I’ve tried to find a way to come back, but every time I tried, Vince would decline it and tell me it wasn’t possible. I just wanna say that I’m grateful for this moment, to be able to talk to the WWE Universe! The most important thing I gotta say…(fans chant Welcome Back) It’s nice to be back. I just wanna say that this is a chance to tell my fans thank you so much for never letting me forgotten. I owe everything to the WWE Universe. Thank you for carrying me in your hearts, never to be forgotten. As I stand here, I feel myself flooded with millions of memories. I remember being here at the Nutter Center and winning the first King of the Ring! One of my proudest moments and nights! I think I remember that at the end, Lawler jumped me. Hey King, nice to see ya. Some things never change. There’s another reason I’m here - I’ve got 12 years of things I’ve wanted to get off my chest. I WANT SHAWN MICHAELS TO COME OUT HERE!
Cole - This is the first time since 1997 that Shawn will have any contact with Bret Hart!
Bret - Shawn Michaels, I’ll just call ya Shawn. I just wanna bury the hatchet and call for a truce.
HBK - First of all, before you come out here and get your “closure”, there’s something I’ve been waiting 12 years to say to you. The fact is you DESERVED WHAT HAPPENED IN MONTREAL! You disrespected me and this business, and yes, I did have a hand in what Vince did that night…(fans chant “you screwed Bret!”)
Bret - I rest my case.
HBK - And there’s a part of me, a big part, that doesn’t regret a bit of it. But there’s another part of me - that knows in the last 12 years, a lot has changed. A lot of things in my life have changed. You know, Bret, I always respected you - I never felt you respected me. There were times that I couldn’t stand the sight of you, and I know the feeling is mutual, but you know something? When I think of Bret Hart, I don’t think of Montreal, I think of Anaheim, California - a 60 minute iron match, that everyone said no one would want to see - and not on PPV. They said nobody could do it - yet Bret and Shawn Michaels did do it, and redefined EVERYTHING THIS INDUSTRY STOOD FOR! When I think of Bret, I think of the excellence of execution. You’re not the only one that’s been carrying it around for 12 years. You’re not the only one that’s ready to move on. You’re not the only one that wants to bury the hatchet. I guess all I have to say is…are you sure, and are you ready?!
Bret - Let’s be honest - you weren’t easy to love. You had your issues. But you’re right, our careers shouldn’t always be tagged. I had a great career, you’ve had a great career. I think it’s as good a time as any in front of all these fans to look each other in the eye and take this moment to say that we can be friends. So I offer you my hand in friendship. I CALL FOR A TRUCE! (they shake hands and hug) There’s one more thing I wanna ask - and I want one more person to come down. VINCE MCMAHON, SEE ME FACE TO FACE TOO! Come on, Vinny. Don’t keep the people waiting!
Miz - Maryse, if you win this tournament, I MIGHT call you back!
Jericho - Hi…There’s a lot of history between us, I was trained by your dad Stu in the Dungeon and mastered the Wall of Jericho against your brother Keith. The cats ran everywhere, remember? I saw your hugfest with Shawn, but I know the real Bret Hart - I can help you get revenge. I would like you to be the guest referee tonight in my match. Screw ‘em right there!
Bret - I don’t want to relive Montreal. I’m not a hypocrite - I want peace!
Jericho - This is an act, right?
Bret - It’s no act. I don’t wanna be perceived by the WWE Universe as someone like you. I want this Montreal thing over with once and for all. If you want to be on Raw, you’d better win your match by yourself, because I don’t know anyone who’s gonna help you. And if I remember things at the Dungeon, it was you screaming louder than anyone else.
HHH - See these, it’s the new Mattel line. The Undertaker (Horny does his pose) Orton. (does his pose) and even Cena. (does his pose)
HBK - Why do you talk to him like he’s a child?
HHH - He’s an innocent little boy!
HBK - HE HAS A BEARD!
HHH - Leprecauns are born with beards - it’s a scientific fact .Look it up on Wikipedia.
Santino - YOU ARE ALL HYPNOCRITES! I AM THE BEST IN THE WORLD AT WHATEVER IT IS I DO! (Hornswoggle attacks)
HHH - Come here, boy.
Santino - GOOD LUCK AT THE SUCKING!
(after SCM)Lawler - Jericho brags about his tweets - the only tweeting he hears now is those birdies over his head!
Lawler - I don’t like anything about this guy, but I can’t stand his voice!
Sheamus - Last week, Jawn Cenar couldn’t beat me! I stood over his body still Dubya Dubya E Champion! My next title match is at the Rumble, and it will NOT BE AGAINST CENA! I BEAT CENA, AND NOW I WANT A NEW CHALLENGE. Bret Hart, you were right when you said you were the best there was - but as for the best there is or ever will be - THAT BELONGS TO ME!
Bourne - Sheamus, the only reason you have that title is because someone GAVE you an opportunity! I know if given the same opportunity, I could beat you! And I want my opportunity right now!
Sheamus - Do ya now? LOOK AT DIS, LITTLE EVAN BOURNE THINKS HE CAN BEAT ME! I’ll tell ya what, let’s get a referee in ‘ere right now! Evan, if you can beat me tonight, I’ll put my title on the line against you at the Rumble. But honestly, you’re not gonna get that title. The only thing you’re gonna get is the worst beating of your entire life. Little Evan Bourne.
Lawler - Dr. Death became a legend wrestling in Japan.
Cole - Having Steve Williams as a part of the organization - we were proud of that!
Cole - KOFI JUST KEEPS COMIN’ AT YA!
Cole - ORTON’S FACE TELLS THE ENTIRE COMPLEX STORY OF WHAT HE’S GONE THROUGH OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS!
Cole - Perhaps tough love will bring Legacy closer than they’ve ever been before!
Cole - Mr. McMahon has said that Bret FORGOT THAT WE’RE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS AND HE DIDN’T DO THE RIGHT THING FOR BUSINESS!
Lawler - Well, it’s a new decade - maybe something can transpire here tonight.
Vince - First thing I’d like to say to you is HAPPY NEW YEAR! And the second thing is that there’s no reason for me to call Bret out here tonight. I think Bret and Shawn buried the hatchet, they brought closure to it, so I feel the same way. Montreal is basically over. Nonetheless, I’d like to thank Bret for being our Guest Host, and NEXT WEEK, OUR GUEST HOST IS IRON MIKE TYSON! Iron Mike, at one time, considered the BADDEST MAN ON THE PLANET! (Bret comes out) I think I know what you’re thinking, and what these people would like to see… They wanna see you apply the Sharpshooter! Bret, I’m asking you to be the better man, and I really wanna hear what you have to say. I don’t wanna provoke you, I would like to get a few things off my chest. And I believe that you screwed you! And I’ll never forget you spitting in my face, literally. I’ll never forget you sucker-punching me in the locker room. I’ll never forget you disrespecting me the night you were inducted into the hall of fame. You’ve slandered me in every publication there is for so many years - I’m not trying to provoke you, I’m being honest. I want to hear what you have to say to me. I hope you’ll start with “I’m sorry.”. I’m not trying to provoke you.
Bret - I CAN THINK OF A LOT OF WORDS TO SAY TO YOU, BUT THE TWO WORDS YOU’RE THINKING OF ARE A LOT DIFFERENT THAN THE ONES I’M THINKING OF. I came here to get closure to this, and I’m halfway there. It’s a great feeling to have that weight off my back after 12 years, you and I want the same thing as bad - we want to get things right. This is your chance to make peace and get this all over with. You know you want this as bad as I do!
Vince - What I thought I wanted was to come out and kick you in the guts. It was stupid, I get it? In the interest of being honest and putting this behind us, you’re right. I want it just as badly as you do. I can remember your first WrestleMania, you were in a battle royal with Andre, and that Andre as great as he was, sooner or later, his career was going to end, and I knew that you were the future. You went from being a tag team specialist to being WWE Champion. No one handed it to you - YOU FOUGHT YOUR WAY TO THE TOP. And Bret, it’s not a catchphrase, you became the excellence of execution, and one of the reasons this whole Montreal thing was so personal was that I was like a father to you. And I felt that responsibility, and speaking of a father, your dad, Stu, and all his accomplishments, and he’s the reason many broke into the business. I’d like to nominate your dad into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Bret - I appreciate that, and it’ll mean a lot to my family. I thank you for that.
Vince - Bret, your thanking me, and all of us would like to thank you. I’d like to thank you for all your contributions to WWE. For all the thrilling moments you gave the WWE Universe. I’d like to thank you for you being you. The real Bret Hart. And I thought I’d never say this, but thank you for being the best there is, was, and ever will be! (they shake, Vince does Bret’s pose, and Vince kicks him low)

The Vince-Bret stuff was so brutal to watch. The skits with Vince are so commonplace anymore there's absolutely nothing compelling to them. What's exciting? What's infuriating? A single kick in the junk leveled the Hitman?

 It looks to be this decade's "Invasion" angle - McMahon egos interfere with the promise it inherently has. Hell, an angle just involving McMahon dodging Bret Hart all night would have been far better. This? This was WWE plugging Bret Hart into their paint-by-numbers formula.

TNA. Well, their writing staff needs people to check for consistency (who was in the limo? who switched cars? who was in the white hummer, and who was behind G-TV? how do you let a veteran like Hall blow the angle? how do book the right amount of surprises spread out in order to mean something? an nauseum.), and some production motherfuckers so as to avoid fuckups in the future - for a nearly 8-year-old professional company funded by billionaires, they're making "public access" caliber errors on the show.

Slow down, take a deep breath, and tell a story. I felt like I was being screamed at for three hours - not by the announcers (not at all by them). But I wasn't able to focus on the show because so much shit happened at once. Who took out the Motor City Machine Guns? Give me some backstory if I haven't followed the show at all and want to know why Foley is out of the building. At the end of the show, I felt kinda like "woah." Not in the good way, like I just got off a ferocious roller coaster. I felt like I'd spent 45 minutes observing a jabbering 20 year old girl who just drank three cans of "Red Bull" and was holding conversations with 5 different people and texting 7 other people and updating her facebook, myspace, linkedin, and twitter all at once. TNA, I don't do coke, and most folks don't - and if they do, they sure aren't watching television. So why must your show be the programming equivalent of Spud's job interview from "Trainspotting"?

TNA has some promise going in, but slow. the. fuck. down. This is pro wrestling, not a quickie in a men's stall. Different contexts, different priorities.

Team 3D versus The Nasty Boyz? I dare you to name a worse match that could be booked this year.

yeah, that was one of my WTF moments. we get flair and hardy within the first half hour of going on air. but the fucking nasty boys destroying a locker room is our segue into the damn main event. i know they needed to hook people early, but seriously.

I haven't been able to enjoy wrestling since late '99/early 2000, but I actually saw a glimmer of what I used to enjoy about it tonight in TNA. The WWE... idk, as much as I love Bret Hart, the WWE just has too many problems that they refuse to fix. Vince McMahon is so played out regardless of the angle he's in. TNA tonight was great except that horrible opening cage match. When the WWE has "divas" wrestle," it's boring and embarrassing, but the chicks in TNA actually have really good matches, I can't believe it!

My only real problem with TNA is their editing, it just feels too much like they're on a sound stage. The locker room cut-scenes don't flow naturally for some reason. It's to cheap looking I suppose. Also, I don't care for the six-sided ring and the lack of space around the outside of the ring. Besides that, I was impressed. The just need to up their production somehow, it all feels too small. They have all these big stars, and great wrestlers, but it feels too claustrophobic.

Glad to see that TNA is still putting Raven to good use..

Seriously though, I went into the bathroom to wash my hands and by the time I got back it was a commercial break and when it came back from commercial, another match was starting. I wonder if WWE still has the copyright on the JOB squad stuff, Stevie & Raven definitely seem to deserve it.

Speaking of poor promotions. I love how the promo for ECW says that ECW is what launched Kane's career, considering he had already won the wwf title, intercontinental title, and tag titles long before ECW.

The main thing that made me laugh was when Hogan confronted Jarrett about the past of TNA which was sad cause he should have done it in the ring. At least Jarrett can still wrestle as where Hogan can barely walk nowadays. I just hope Hall & Xpac can work better than their previous stints in TNA.

The WWE needs to focus on the future which I know will never happen as long as McMahon keeps trying to be relavent on WWE TV. I hope Sheamus can improve on the mic cause he has to be the worst champ since Lesnar when it comes to speaking.

TNA had some interesting ideas, but none of them seemed to pan out because of poor editing, pacing, writing, acting, whatever. The fact that the Nasty Boys were even there was a crime against humanity, let alone slotting them right before the main event. Angle/Styles was, as expected, fantastic... but THAT'S what we needed more of. Outside of that match, I was shown nothing that 'set them apart', as it were. If I were a first time viewer who had heard from friends about how much better the wrestling in TNA is, I would've been horrendously confused.

'The X Division is amazing!'... in a match that I CAN'T SEE THE WRESTLERS IN that ended in a complete CLUSTERfuck. I'm still not sure what happened, and I wasn't real clear that Homicide did either. And the Jeff Hardy debut... what. the. fuck. As much as I've never been a Hardy fan, to randomly pop him into an X DIVISION match and have him initially get punked by Homicide was, to say the least, the wrong way to play that.

An interesting experiment, but if TNA brought their A-game, well, that's just sad.

On the other hand, Raw wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed it. Most of the matches were ok (the women's one was meh, but it had Maryse, so that evens out), and I even tolerated the Hornswoggle skit. In fact, my two complaints were how throw-away the US match seemed because we just jumped back into it, and the fact that Vince, like someone already said, is past his sell-by date as a character. It doesn't even matter what storyline it is, the Mr. McMahon character no longer holds any interest. I'm hoping that Hart will keep McMahon's ego in check, but that's only if he got (I hope) some kind of 'creative direction' clause in his contract. That last segment was bad, but a lot of it was Vince, and a general sense of being anticlimatic... plus, going right off the air was a bad choice.

Oh, and awkward hug or not, I admit to completely marking out during the entire 'Bret intro/calling out Michaels' segment. The shades of heel HBK were great, and it really underlined that though I really want to see HBK/Taker 2, I'd really rather have Hart be in a storyline with Michaels instead of Vince. Also, so glad they were smart enough to have HBK use his real music.

Overall, neither show was mind-blowing, and it was all about nostalgia. Whether it was Hart, Hogan, or just flipping back-and-forth again, it felt a little nice. Not nice enough, however, to encourage me to tune in weekly again. I may pop in and out to keep up with Hart, but that's about it.

(Sidenote: when Vince was talking about Stu, was I the only one that was sitting there just hoping that Owen was going to come up?)

^ I thought I heard a brief "we want Owen" chant from the crowd.

Ahh, Dayton, Ohio. Not the smartest city in the US, that's for sure.

I'm fairly certain it was actually a few guys chanting 'we want Hogan'. I had actually thought it was Owen at first, too, but it was obvious the longer it went.

I really do wonder if they'll use it eventually, though, given that Vince obviously has no problem using dead wrestlers to move a story along. Different circumstances, sure, but I don't put anything past Vince anymore.
