The XR55 is a great receiver, especially for the price. If you have a Fry's near you they were clearing out the silver XR57's (basically a XR55 with a HDMI input) for ~$170 a couple weeks ago if you can still find one.

If you're looking for the best quality look at the Oppo 971H or the Panasonic S77. I have a Panasonic S77 and the picture it outputs from dvds is much better IMO than the one from my Xbox 360. Note that Oppo is going to release a new player that will upconvert to 1080p by the end of this year...

Hmm, audio is very subjective but I don't find the XR55 to sound shallow at all. Are you sure you didn't have the speakers set to "small"? I listen to mostly music (probably 75% music 25% movies/games) and I've been very happy with the XR55. My previous amp was a Jolida integrated tube...
