I have been keeping an eye on this thread, but I don't see a good answer... what is the appeal of this game? Is it actually fun to play, or is this about collecting an obscure title and its bonus item? The few reviews so far are OK, but not great.
This is coming from someone who hasn't played an SMT game before. Thanks for any opinions.
By my reckoning, most never even heard of or played the previous Devil Summoner on the PS2, and are probably just speculating on the collect-ability and value of the game, and especially because of the bonus gift, based on previous similar releases.
Past SMT games have sold out and fetched a high resale value on eBay (though just about all the PS2 SMT games have gotten reprints which are still easily available, even if they lack some goodies from the original print runs), and the last SMT plush toy (for Persona 4) went out of stock pretty fast and fetches a pretty high price now.
I don't think it's an exaggeration to say this release wouldn't be getting all the attention it has if it didn't have the bundled plush.
Well, some might still be getting it cause it's an Atlus game, and many have this perception that Atlus = rare = resale for profit (though personally it hardly holds true anymore, certainly not as much as it used to), but the plushie I guess sealed the deal for many.
IMHO, I don't think this game will appreciate in value much, as there seems to be quite a large manufacturing run. It's been available on Amazon since January (other than a brief period when it was out-of-stock), and has been amongst their top-selling video games consistently, so there must have been plenty of orders for it already, yet it's still in stock.
I'm guessing we'll see plenty of the game alone selling used at GameStop a couple of months down the line actually.
