Assassin's Creed - Gen. Discussion & Info

So is this game worth a blind buy without renting it first? Everything I've read would say yes, especially at $39.99 at Best Buy.

This game's so much fun. Bounding about the rooftops and assassinating the guards is hella fun.

Is there a way to counter being thrown? It's only a mild annoyance. Also, how do you quickly kill a guard you've countered and knocked down, but not killed? I switched over one time to the short blade, but every other time my switch is too slow or I don't press the right buttons and I end up getting hit a few times.

Yeah, you get the ability to counter throws back eventually. I never ended up using it though.

For knocked down guards, i just wildly stabbed at them when they were on the ground. Usually didn't have a problem with getting hit.

Sorry, haven't been keeping up with this thread. AC has a lot of mixed reviews, but I'm sure I'd really love it as someone told me it's a lot like Rise of a Ninja... but better.

But my question is, is Assassin's Creed worth buying? Or is it another game I should be putting on my queue?

This game needs a lock-on homing feature for the assassinations. There have been numerous times where I wanted to do the jumping kill only to miss my target by over jumping or landing to his sides. When a game is all about the Assassination (imo), they should really have a better way of doing it than just 3: jump kill, stab kill or combat. This is mostly because of the controls. They're great for scaling walls and quick maneuvers, but not very precise when it comes to pinpoint jumps.

i don't see how people can quit this game before the first assassination. seeing as that's the point of the game, it's impossible to get the feel of it at all. at any rate, my friend did that very same thing. I agree the whole present day plot is lame, but the actual quests are fun.
I think a lot of people went in expecting something that this game just wasn't. It seems as though people want this to be an RPG, but it's an action/adventure. It's great if you like games like Prince of Persia.

I enjoyed this game a lot. You should grab it at $40 or less (BB has a deal on it right now), but stay away from getting it at $60.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But I'll always be reminded of the $40 I wasted.

Yeah, that I shall do. I would of been all over it for $37.99 but my Best Buy were out of stock.

I got COD4 for 37 and was pretty psyched about.

About the same price for Ass Creed is definitely fair.

Someone asked if its worth a buy or should you put it on your queue, (I assume you have gamefly): Well my answer is to queue it up. Not because the game sucks but because there is no replay value. Really none. Once you've beat the main story the only thing to go back for is flags, and unless you kept a journal of which flags you picked up and where, this necessitates starting from scratch (unless you have a photographic memory).

Hopefully that answers some questions. Now I have a question of my own:

Does anybody (or know anybody) who goes around without a guide, without a FAQ or walkthrough, but basically jsut by pure exploration, and finds every single flag? think its possible?

I agree that someone who would scrap this game and write it off as trash without ever even getting into the animus is a complete idiot, well closed minded at the least. I LMAO when I heard someone did that b/c it is about 2% of the total time spent in the game.

Agree that the unskippable dialogue scenes are annoying (to others, I enjoyed them) and the game does get repettitive.

Just finished the game, and that was probably the biggest cliffhanger ending I've ever experienced. All in all I really enjoyed it too, I might go back and do all those fetch quests eventually, but I got all the other achievements besides "conversationalist."

My only real problem right now is that, if quit during an assination mission and reload my save, I have to watch the 4 hour scenes where Altair talks to the Bureau guy every time.

I'm somewhere in the middle of this game, and I'm loving it. It looks so good, and I love scrambling all over the rooftops. Sure, I wish there were more than the few side quests and ways to get info, but I'm still hooked. The only thing that really bugs me is that you can't even take your horse on a light trot without the soldiers coming after you. I know I can outrun them easily, but if I'm going for lookouts, flags or templars, it's effing annoying.

I think this will ruin me for other games though. When I go back to Mass Effect, I'm going to wonder why I can't jump and climb all over the Citadel.

Wow they weren't kidding about glitches and I mean real ones. So I'm running around and blew the pickpocket mission. Running around I get knocked down into a pillar. Now the guy is standing on top of my not attacking nor letting me move or get up. This is messed up! At least I will get the 10 min of open combat?

WTF ubisoft!

I experienced a few weird glitches too during my playthrough. At one point I was running through Msyaf and I ran up to a building (trying to climb it) and I ran through it, and proceeded to fall into nothingness for infinity (until I turned off my xbox). The good thing is that AC autosaves a ridiculous amount, so you never really have to do any stupid content over besides listening to those cutscenes.

I was having fun...up until the 4th mission....I just couldnt do it anymore, the massive repetativeness of it all was just overwhelming. all the joy i had was gone and i was left an Unhappy mess of my former self.

I traded it in for Mass Effect, (RENT Ass creed, BUY Mass Effect - Wise Decision)

Just beat the game, got it from gamefly.

This is I believe only the second game I've ever beaten on my 360, and I've had it for a year+. I just never find the time to beat games, but I had a lot of time on my hands and beat this. Took me about 20-25 hours though, I don't like to rush through things :)

Anyway, I was on youtube and saw this speed drawing of Altair I thought some of you might want to see if you haven't already. God damn, I wish I could draw like that.

I just got this on Saturday and I played through the training session in the beginning - I just wanted to check it out. It seems like I'll have to spend some time with it to get used to the controls but I have WAY too many other games to play before I even try...

Very cool sketch flyers fan, nice find.

Jav I would say there is about a 30 minute to 1 hr learning curve. Well that and as you progress there are new abilities but you get training sessions for those.

Huge tip I wish someone would have told me: Ignore the "social rules" while traveling through the kingdom. I emphasis "traveling" because you may not want to if you're taking it slow and getting the lookout pts and searching for flags and templars. But if you're (like I was) just going from one city to another through the kingdom just sprint the whole time with your horse. They'll be alerted but can't catch you and it is very easy to hide.

Please tell me you killed him with the arm blade? I had a guy humpng the air similar to that. I killed his ass. I actually think I got an acheivement for it. I think it was my 50 guard kill with the arm blade thingie.

I just finally finished the game. Wow. What a let down in many ways. I am totally hooked for the next one. I kind of wish I would have rented it, but I knew I wouldn't finish it if I did. Oh well, I like the game, the ending just total blue balls. Time to move on with Mass Effect and some other games.
This game stinks more than the south end of a north bound mule.
Ewwwww.....thats its butt!

I disagree but whatever. Ending was so so at best.

Joe, you must have invested alot of skill points in "Charm" to get the guard to do that!

So what am I supposed to be doing? I'm in the poor section of Damascus (I just started playing) and I found all the lookouts (9/9) and I saved all of the citizens (12/12) - there's one more icon on my map (an Informer's Target). Is there anything else I'm supposed to do (other than the flags which are a ridiculous pursuit)?

Go to the Assassin's Bureau. It should be marked by that insignia on your map. Talk to the guy there and he should tell you where you might find more info on your target.

There's typically about 6 options for you to do, of which you have to do at least 2 to open up the actual assassination attempt. The lookouts are merely to get rid of the "fog" on the map so you can easily see where everything is, while the saving the citizens goal is an optional sidequest. If you noticed, everytime you save one, you either get vigilantes at the location or scholars. The former will help you in a chase by holding up guards while the latter will help you get into well-guarded places.

Jav, a little tip, just know that you can do the lookout scans, and save the citizens and they will be done forever, but the investigations (if you plan on doing them all) need to be done in one visit to the city.

InvestigationsLpickpocket, evesdropping, timed flag gatherign, taking out templars, interrogations etc..

Saving citizens and scanning lookouts are unique in that once done, they stay done, wheras with investigations, you have to do all of em in one trip to the city cuz if you don't and you leave, you must do all of them on your re-visit.

So wait I have to play the game again when I go flag hunting? I already missed the Lucy achievement but I don't think I have it in me to try to play this game again.

Can you get that Lucy achievement at any time or do you have to talk to her everytime you're given a break. I know you can get out of the Animus at anytime.

I really disliked the gameplay. I was looking forward to flinging myself around the rooftops until I discovered that there was almost nil skill involved--face a direction, hold two buttons, watch Altair do shit.

Just be sure to talk to lucy every break, don't get out of the animus to do it as its unnecessary, but in the scripted story parts you should be sure to chat her up.

And Never, you're the first person I've ever heard to complain that the climbing mechanics were too easy.

Can I stop playing (as long as I don't leave town)? Last night I did a bunch of the missions in Acre (poor) - I found all the towers, saved all the citizens and collected all the flags. This stuff will save. I also did a few other things like pickpocketed a guy, went on some flag chasing minigame, assassinated a dude for an informant, etc. Do I have to do all of those things again? God I hope not.

This game is HUGE if you decide to do everything. I was in this one section of town for about two and a half hours last night and I didn't even get to the real assassination part. I'm going for achievements with this game too even though I blew the Lucy one already because I didn't know about it until it was too late. I probably won't get all the flags in the kingdom but I can see myself going for the 33-34 in each part of each town... I'm having fun just roaming around town.

Oh yeah just strolling around town was one of the funnest things to do in this game IMO.

Lemme try to express myself more clearly about what will save when you leave town what won't: Some things, finding flags (not where you have to find 20 in 3:00 minutes but I mean the flags that are scattered across the whole game), saving citizens, and scannign lookouts will be permanenty accomplished when you do them once.

Then there are these other types of activities labeled "investigations." These activities are pickpocketing, interrogating, mini assassinatinos (three guys are lookin for me, go kill em'), timed flag gatherings. These will give you tips and tricks about your target and must ALL be done in one visit to the city, (not one sitting, you can save and shut off your console) but they must all be done in one trip to the city if you want to fill in every memory bar.

Basically you shoudl be sure to do every available assignment before you carry out the assassination. This way you won't have to go back and re-do all the investigatins (since you must have done them all in one visit ot hte city).

It was a pain inteh ass for me because for the first two assassinations, i just did the bare minimum and then carried out the hit. Well it turned out when I went back to that memory block to complete the remaining investgations, it negated all the investagions (but not scans or saved citzens) and I had to do alot of em again.

Hope this helps.

Yea, the controlls need getting use to.

Its a bit of a button masher when you get into a big battle. The game is alot of fun and there's lots to do too.

I'm enjoying walking through the promise land during the 1300's.

The graphics are awesome.

I have to disagree with the button mashing. In big battles, with skillful presses you can cut down 5-6 guards in almost quick succession.

From the first 2 levels I was able to play I thought the game was awesome. Countering was really fun and made the battles super fast once I got it back. I completed every mission and climbed the tallest buildings...but sadly the game doesn't work on my 360 anymore (disc unreadable). Anyway, its a nice game to have from the 360. Most games I've played for the system are either long RPGs such as BD, ES, Mass effect, etc., or shooters. I like all those games also, but this actiony stealthy kinda game switches it up and I really don't have any complaints with it aside from the odd "Why the heck are they chasing me now" moment...and the fact that so many people get the disc unreadable problem.

I think this is all in how you look at it. Instead of worrying about what buttons to press on the controller in your hand, your eyes stay focused on where you are running in the game. The extra immersion gained from this design decision is awesome! It brings me back to the days of my youth when the cops used to come and chase us away from the skating rink on Friday nights. When I was running away from them in the woods I wasn't thinking about the mechanics of my running. I was looking forward trying to find a path with my eyes that would lead to freedom.

right now I collecting all the flag and I hate that I have 99 of 100 and now have to look at every flag place again.

Oh yeah I realized from the get go that unless you plan on getting this acheivment from the beginning, you will have to find a list and just work down it one by one.

THe only way around this is if you meticulously wrote down every single flag you found. I don't even know how one coudl do this since the locations are so difficult to describe since buildings/cities are so similar.

You're the first person I've encountered that is going after this, lemme know how it goes. GOod luck!

I just borrowed this game from a friend, and wow! its awesome. everything from the gameplay, to the storyline and how MASSIVE this game actually is. I just love how if you go to the tallest building in the game and look around, EVERYTHING you see you can go to. (thats amazing to me..... how there is no background in this game)

The "leap of faith" off the builds are pretty neat, as is walking behind a guard, stabbing him and walking on your merry way, you then see the guard fall and people start to get scared saying "theres a murder around!" all while you walk right by them..... its just amazing.

I can't wait to see where the story goes, I'm only in memory block 5, I think I've done all the events in the "present world" like stealing lucy and warrens pen's and reading e-mails (I hope I haven't missed anything, trying to play this without a walkthrough).

I don't see how I'll EVER get all 100 flags (without looking them up on-line) I have about 20 or so of each of the different flags so far, its like the packages in grand theft auto.
Anyone else have any trouble with the "Enemy of the Poor" achievement for throwing 25 harassers? It seems like I've thrown so many.
Just so you know...
Harassers are the "Please, sir, 'ave any money" beggar women. The annoying fuckers who shove you don't count.
Maybe that's my problem.

Also, for people going after flags. I have collected all flags & killed all templars. It's not that bad when you have the use of this blessed site:

http://www.assassinscreed-maps.com

Screen shots and maps of every flag and templar. So great.
Nice find, I'll add it to the OP.

Can you talk to and encounter the complete dialogue tree with that girl at any time or are they locked out once you get past certain checkpoints?

You have to talk to her every time after you leave the animus, before you go to sleep. You can't do it later, and you can't go back. If you miss just one (like I did), you have to start all over.

yeah thats kinda sucky about the conversations with whatshername. I figured it might be like that though so scoured the lab before adn after EVERY animus session to make sure I was thorough.

I must have been pushing too many drunks. I got the enemy of the poor achievement today for a solid 1000/1000. Thanks for the bit of guidance.
