Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

Seriously, dude looks like he's wearing XXXXXXL fruit of the looms.

If Hickman is writing FF then I have faith. He's done a "Fantastic" job so far.

My hypothesis:
Johnny will be dead/gone until this new FF reaches the #600 mark despite the reset numbering. It leads me to bealive they're building up to the 600 number which Marvel loves nowadays.

Man wtf at New Avengers #9. What the crap was i reading? It was like 4 stories about nothing. Wish i would have saved my money on that one.

And can someone tell me what's been happening with the ultimate's? I got Ultimate vs. New Ultimate's and they started the issue with the triskolion in the desert and iron man all jacked up. I have no idea what happened before cept vampires were involved, which was my que to stop reading.

New Avengers is in need desperate need of an identity that makes it different from other Avengers books. It feels like a diet version of Secret Avengers or Secret Warriors. We don't need another Nick Fury story. New Avengers was solid in it's first arc with Hellstorm, Voodoo and Strange and then it had some decent one-short stories, but now this is just kinda meh.

man im surprised so many people have issues with new avengers. i like the fact you see more of them being normal people dealing with normal stuff its secret avengers im having issues with. i also hate how long theyre taking with that whole scarlett witch story over in young avengers.

Has anyone here read the first or second issues of the Mass Effect comics? I am a huge Mass Effect fan but I don't know if these would be worth hunting down.

IMO, Mass Effect Redemption (the first series with Liara and the Shadow Broker) was pretty book artistically. The story is what you'd expect from anything Mass Effect, but the art brought it down immensely.

The new series, Evolution, is pretty solid so far. Nothing amazing about it, but it's leaps and bounds better than Redemption. My two cents is that if you're a huge Mass Effect fan, as I am, then get the books.

What's Evolution about?

I haven't read the recent New Avengers issue but I'm liking it much more than the first arc so far. The issue were Luke and Jess are on a date was a little wordy but I still liked it.

Evolution focuses mostly around The Illusive Man and his origins.

I really enjoyed the Voodoo story line myself. I totally agree that we don't need another Fury story. Getting repetitive now.

Maybe they can somehow get more Dr. Strange involved, i really enjoy him.

Avengers storyline has me interested too with the gauntlet stones. That book has kept me interested since the restart.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with Bendis' books. I really like Ultimate Spider-man and things like Powers or Scarlet but I haven't really liked his avengers team books for awhile. They almost always have excellent artwork but sometimes his writing style can be really annoying to me.

Oh, and whoever mentioned X-Factor a few pages back, THANKS. That book really rocks. I had heard that Remender can vary in his comics' quality but this book has been great. The art especially is amazing and different from anything else on the shelf. I picked up the first five issues and totally enjoyed them.

You're welcome. :) BTW, it's X-Force but I'm sure you know that.

Also, issue 6 just came out this week.

So I just finished ASM 654.1. I really enjoyed it, looking forward to the Venom ongoing.
Except it looks like they are going to kill off anti-venom, which is kind of a downer.

They said that the government is regulating how many times each agent can wear the suit so they don't fully bond with it. I think it was 10 times then the suit goes to a new host. I'm not sure if this is explained in the comics yet but I read it in an interview a while back.

I think it's 20 times. Although if
flash
as venom proves popular I'm sure they'll come up with a plot device around that.

i think in the end hell keep the suit permenently.
anyone going to C2E2?
I am, but I only go one day and I am usually buying long boxes of comics. I don't go to panels or meet guests or any of that stuff.

Here is the "Chicago thread". There are usually people that go multiple days.

sotc1988, I got the numbering wrong. It was 5 that came out last week so you're caught up.

Got home last night and just wanted to relax and read comics. I have been dreading Ultimate Avengers 3, and for good reason. What a bunch of crap. Ultimate Avengers 1 & 2 were okay but this is really bad. Why does Marvel think Vampires are the new Zombies?

I've been pretty hard on the main Thor story arc since Fraction took over, but I sat down and read a few issues last night and started getting into it. Ferry's art makes the Asgardians look almost celestial as opposed to there gritty Nordic roots. I kinda like it, makes them look more god-like.

Still have Uncanny X-Force #3 & 4. Probably get to them tonight.
I found it annoying to have 2 silent funeral issues, both from Marvel, in the same week. It just reeked of cliche and laziness.
i have to agree one was enough 2 was overkill. the ff one i liked especially the bit towards the end with
spiderman and franklin
.

I absolutely loved Fantastic Four #588. I don't see why people hate on it. It's a great idea and Hickman and Dragotta nailed it perfectly IMO.

So, I never paid attention to the cosmic stuff going on in the Marvel Universe, but I bought the Variant Cover of Annihilators #1 just because it's Mike Mignola. It was a pretty good read, but holy hell that cover is amazing. Also, Rocket Raccoon is awesome!

Does anybody know the origin of that Hulk "clone" in Avengers 3?

I just saw a panel of Hulk asking to be in the avengers team instead of the black ops avengers. And Captain America referred to him as Bruce. Why woujld they name the clone Bruce and hide him from the public, if he's just a clone and junk?

I haven't been reading the whole vampire storyline within Ultimate Avengers, so i don't know anything that manifested recently.

You mean Ultimate Avengers. There's very little origin for nerd Hulk. He's a clone created by Tony's brother. He's smart like Banner but doesn't have the rage factor, which makes him weaker. IMO an uninteresting character who doesn't develop much. He's pretty much a pussy Hulk. I guess they only call him Bruce since he's his clone, nothing more to it than that.

So i guess there wasn't much fleshed out with his origin after the Red Skull storyline then. :p

Really dumb character imo. They should have just brought the real hulk back. Which i never understood why they didn't because Banner had his Hulk persona under control for HvsW and that Ultimates alien storyline.

I would just stop reading Ultimate Avengers. It doesn't get any better. I love Steve Dillon but his art wasn't clicking with me on this. I think it's the way he does lips, they're too pretty.

Oh, i didn't even start reading them soon as i saw Dillon's name on it. I hate his art too. Just to clean of a style that doesn't fit into comics.

Hoping that Ulimates vs. Ultimate Avengers storyline gets better. The first issue was kinda dead, but i wasn't expecting to much to happen within that issue anyways.

I don't hate his art, I just didn't think it was a good fit for this.

Read the first few issue of Morning Glories. Good read. I brought the TPB into work and my co-workers made fun of me. From the cover they thought it looked like Twilight teeny hipster bullshit. Then I opened it and showed them a few panels... nuff said.

Better revive this thread from the dead.
I really enjoyed Venom this week. I always love it when an author can make a low level character (like Jack O' Lantern) and turn them into something cool. Reminds me of what Warren Ellis did with his Thunderbolts run and making people start to care about the Green Goblin again after he'd been dormant for a few years.
Also really liked Batman Inc but it's hard to get a bead on where the story is going until a couple more issues come out.

I didn't really like the Venom reboot. However, I can see why people would like it. I was never a big fan of the character to begin with.

Next week, the prologue to Fear Itself stats. I'm pretty hyped.

I've been a big Venom fan since I was a kid. The reboot is just "okay." I'll continue to read it, but it's missing something. I feel like all these hosts are placeholders until Eddie gets the suit back. Spider-Man has been in need of a good Venom arc for some time now. New Ways to Die was great, but it was more of a Norman/Dark Reign story. Carnage on the other hand just got interesting. Major Spoiler--->
Cletus Kassidy is back!? Guess getting ripped in half in space just isn't enough to kill people in comic books nowadays.

Spidey #655 was really good. I totally forgot Spider-Man actually killed someone. I never thought it was considered cannon but this issue put all that to rest. Astonishing Wolvie/Spidey suddenly makes more sense. Anyways a great single issue. I analyzed that splash page for a good 5-10 minutes, trying to recognize all the characters.

What comics would you recommend to someone (me) who stopped reading before the Ultimate Universe was created?

Probably on of the most recent things I have read is Sam and Twitch until Bendis stopped writing them. Batman Hush is the most recent DC arc I have read.

Any series to skip or series that are definite reads?
What/who do you like?
I am pretty much into any type of comic.

I will eventually read The Walking Dead. I would also like to read all the Green Lantern stuff like Rebirth and the Sinestro Corps.

I used to collect pretty much everything, so I don't really know where to start with modern age books. It seems like a lot of the stuff is story arcs now, so I wasn't sure if I should skip something like "Civil War" or "52". Are there any "must reads" or things to avoid?

There's been a ton of great stuff from the last few years. I'm not much of a DC guy but several posters in the thread are, they could help you in that area.

Walking Dead lives up to the hype. Try tracking down the the Walking Dead compendium vol.1 which has the first 48 issues. Amazon has it for $35 which is a steal. That should keep you busy for a while.

Fables, Locke & Key, Y the Last Man, Chew, Preacher & Morning Glories are several of my favorite non-super hero comics. Defiantly check into Y the Last Man if anything.

As for Marvel super hero stuff Civil War is a nice starting point if you want to start getting caught up. I personally liked Civil War, but opinions are mixed. Annihilation is amazing if you like Marvel's cosmic stuff. Other recommendations Planet Hulk, Marvel 1602, Old Man Logan, World War Hulk, Immortal Iron Fist, Astonishing X-Men, Messiah Complex. The Ultimate Universe also has several great reads. Ultimates 1&2, the first 4 or 5 arcs of Ultimate FF and pretty much all of Ultimate Spidey has been good.

Let us know if you have any questions, we'll try to get you back reading.

If you're going to start in the Marvel Universe I suggest getting "Avengers Disassembled", "House of M" and the first volume of New Avengers first. The progressively go through the time line (Civil War, Planet Hulk, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion).

Other good stuff includes Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man, Ed Brubaker's Captain America, the aforementioned (by Rodimus) Old Man Logan and Immortal Iron First.

Try going to your local library, it's free!!! Mine helped me catch up on my comic book reading. And after reading everything I wanted I expanded into new material. It's how I came across Fables and 100 Bullets.
