Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

Need help on what Green lantern trades to get. I have rebirth and rage of the red lanterns. I plan on getting agent orange and sinestro corps war. Any others worth getting?

Also where is a good place to get into batman? PLaying arkham asylum and its got me hooked.
Try going to your local library, it's free!!! Mine helped me catch up on my comic book reading. And after reading everything I wanted I expanded into new material. It's how I came across Fables and 100 Bullets.
I did the same thing at Barnes and Nobles.

I would just go over there one Saturday with my earphones and grab some tradebacks and start reading.

Yeah, that's what I do. I usually buy the comics if I think I will like the storyline. I own "Y the last man", but haven't read them yet. I am familiar with everything you mentioned except "Morning Glories". I will have to look for it at C2E2 this weekend.

Morning Glories is fairly new and totally awesome. There is only one Trade Paperback out of the first six issues and that itself is only ten bucks. I'm pretty sure they will release a "Chew: Omnivore Edition" type book for Morning Glories down the line.
Carnage on the other hand just got interesting. Major Spoiler--->
Cletus Kassidy is back!? Guess getting ripped in half in space just isn't enough to kill people in comic books nowadays.
The original 3-issue Carnage story is really the thing that got me into comics in the first place, so I'm enjoying this current series.

its the amazing spider
ronin
lol. i like where theyre taking spiderman definelty pushing him to use his smarts more now if only hed learn some martial arts.
never figured his spider sense was so important like the key to doing what he does.

First new Wonder Woman picture. Oh yeah.

I like the direction they're going with Ultimate Spidey thus far.

Otherwise I love Walking Dead with each installment for I know shit is gonna hit the fan eventually. Then again I enjoy anything written by Kirkman.

Pretty much dropped all Marvel titles and am now just strictly reading DC stuff in anticipation in seeing how Brightest Day ends along with Lantern War.

I usually talk about comics on a lot of other sites, but they're being slow today. Is anyone else pissed that Millar's totally retconned the Ultimate Iron Man minis out of Ultimate history? There has been little pokes at it here and there since he began writing the new Ultimate books (the addition of Gregory Stark and such) but it was kind of outright retconned this week (in Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates issue 2).
The Ultimate universe just doesn't make sense anymore. For a relatively new universe there's way too many inconsistent moments.
i agree with that outside of u spiderman i cant tell if the other stories are present , past or just some weird kind of alternate story within a story. especially with the ultimate doom stuff and is
tony stark dead now or what ?
and when the fuck did he ever have a brother and why wasnt he mentioned in the other ultimate iron man stuff?

and where the fuck is nova one minute theyre making ti seem like he would end up as the new daredevil and then poof. though i did the black panther taking his place. im also confused about doom is he now only a mystic did what bruce do to him stick?

The ultimate books were good in the beginning, maybe for a while afterwards. By it felt like it started getting inconsistent and crappy writing after a while. I enjoyed all the books in the beginning, but now it's hard to stick to any. I wish they would end it all instead of giving me false hope. Especially when they have my favorite artist or writer on a story arc, makes me get it. :p

Off topic- went to antique show and scored me really exelent condition, first prints of spawn and wildcats #1. I saw a wildcats #2 with them foil covers from the old days and couldn't resist getting that too. Got the lot for 10$.

The Nova thing was just a teaser. Who knows what he is doing now. He was in Secret Avengers for the first story arc and has been gone ever since.
I haven't touched an ultimate book in at least 6 months. It's just been awful.
The Ultimate Avengers books have been ranging from meh to fantastic, and Ultimate Spidey has been consistently wonderful.
The Ultimate universe just doesn't make sense anymore. For a relatively new universe there's way too many inconsistent moments.
I don't have a problem with it making sense (if I completely just cut Ultimatum out that is). Everything seems fairly consistent storywise to me, but then again I'm pretty good at keeping up. I usually read every book Marvel/DC puts out each week.

The answer for Tony's brother is that Marvel gave Millar reign over the Ultimate U and he's completely retconned out the Ultimate Iron Man minis that came out so that it turns out
what we were actually reading was a fictionalized version of Tony Stark's origin that was made for a cartoon series that exists in the Ultimate Universe. Also, I don't think Tony's dead. He'll probably just be a vampire or something, I don't know Millar's crazy.

I liked my idea better that Gregory Stark was just a thinned out Obadiah Stane that was adopted by Tony's dad after Lonnie gied in the second Ult Iron Man series.

It's been consistent from a writing standpoint but the artists have changed a bit too many times on Ultimate Spidey and it's all been sub-par IMO.

I don't know about the art being inconsistent for Ultimate Spider-Man, I mean the artists so far (with the exception of annuals) have only been Bagley, Immonen, Lafuente, and Samnee and that's not bad for a series that's had 155 issues.

The only time I can honestly say that the art's mis-stepped is in the latest issue Samnee's drawing everyone like they're from the 616 Universe.

Doom's goat legs. Were'd they go? Why was the Blob eating the Wasp? What woman was Venom searching for and why? How did Doom get out of the Zombie-verse? Were did Black Panther, Kaazar and Shanna come from again? They just magically appeared. I'm sure there's more questions, these were just off the top of my head.

I dropped a lot of Marvel's stuff for non super comics. Finally caught up with Chew and Morning Glories. Now I'm trying to catch up with Berserk., the only manga I intend to keep up with.

I'm not sure about that, I only read the Silver Surfer and N-Zone arcs of Ultimate Fantastic Four.

Edit: I read a few non-supers, but the superhero books are my passion. Outside of superheroes I've been reading Chew, Hack/Slash, Walking Dead, and I just picked up and started reading this whole Infestation thing that's going on in the IDWverse (love me some Ghostbusters). I'm trying to get into Morning Glories, but it's really not my style.

Also, who here collects and for how long? I've been building my collection since I was 3 or 4 and I've got about 12 longboxes and 1 shorbox full now.

My dad got me into comics in the early 90's, he used to be a big comic book collector but sold his collection to start his business. I never really read any of the comics he got me. The only comics I read back then were Spider-Man and X-Men. Then when comics went to shit I quit. While in college I kept hearing things about the Ultimate universe so I got a couple TPB and really enjoyed them, then when Civil War started I got back into subscriptions. Been an avid reader and collector ever since. Like you my favorites are Superheroes, but I like broadening my horizons.

Only thing I could never get into was DC. I never collected it as a kid so I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the characters. I tried getting into it with 52 but was lost.

I have 8 short baxes for all my old stuff and 13 short baxes for all my newer stuff. I'm running out of space.

I've only been collecting for two or three years. I don't have much of a collection.

I have one short box that contains the complete run of Buffy the Vampire Slayer S8, as well as a couple of miniseries' and some random issues. And as far as hardcovers/TPB's, I have less than 50.

Not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but Barnes and Noble's online site has a buy 3 get 1 free on graphic novels right now. And the prices on their site are pretty much consistent with Amazon (too bad their locations aren't like that).

Sara Pichelli was the artist on USM after Lafuente. Her run was cut short, though, once Bagley resigned with Marvel.

Millar has a no-edit clause in his contract which is why his Ultimate stories make no sense and don't jive with the rest of the Ultiverse. His story in Avengers vs. Ultimates (which is supposed to tie directly into the Death of Spider-Man storyline) is intentionally leaving out story aspects that have taken and will take place in USM. Marvel needs to fire him from all their superhero books, he's a raging egomaniac. Just let him continue to write 2 issues of Kick-Ass a year. What a tool.

I don't mean the original Ultimate Spidey artist. I'm talking about when they changed it to Ultimate "Comics" Spider-Man. The art was really bad. It wasn't even similar in any way to Bagley or Immonen's style. It really turned me off from the book. Inconsistent stories and horrid art (at times) is what drove me from the Ultimate universe. I should be thankful, though. If I never dropped Ultimate Universe, I would've never found out how great Green Lantern is.

They need to take away the no edit clause, there are very few writers that shouldn't have an editor on their ass. Also, thanks for reminding me of Pichelli, I totally forgot that part of the USM.

I know (you're talking about the Lafuente art), but I loved that. The art change felt right though, since they also went with character redesigns it felt like it was actually teens changing their look. I personally really loved it.

You dropped it for GL though? You're excused good sir, that's an amazing book.

This ends tomorrow, fyi. Unless they extended it or something.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this before but I wasn't a fan of Lafuente's art either. I didn't mind the character redesigns, that's understandable. But his art style is flat and that pseudo-anime look comes across as amateurish.

Dropped Heroes for Hire. I wanted to read the first arc and see where it was going. It wasn't bad but it's a group of super heroes I have little interest in. I mainly got it for Iron Fist but I've never been a fan of the rest of the cast and this book didn't kindle any interest. On the other hand Thunderbolts has made me a Man-Thing and Ghost fan. Love that book.

Anyone buy from Effin Comics? They have a few of the Blackest Night series that I am missing and was wondering if they were reputable?

Hey guys,
Can anyone point me to a chronology for the current hulk books. I read The Incredible Hulk Vol 1 and I am pretty sure I am already out of the original chronology. I am talking about the recent IH Vol 1. I am trying to read all of the Hulk book s that have been coming out in the last 3 or 4 years. I know, or at least think, Hulk is first but I am really not 100% sure and I can't seem to find the correct order to read all of them.

Don't forget them Ult Xmen vs Ult FF annuals that came out where the Xmen/FF came from the future to stop something. Cyclops was Cap America in that future scenario.

That crap just posed more unanswered questions, especially after Ultimatum happened. Since everything in Ultimatum had no connection to the future of them annuals, which they imposed that the events of Ultimatum led to that crappy future.

And i always wondered how Doom got a hold of Namor when the Thing went and visited Doom at the end of Ultimatum.

I was enjoying this New Ultimate's vs. Ultimate avengers storyline, but they just had another full issue of Black Hulk fighting his previous team. WTF do i care about that crap?

We know hes tough, we know he is a gangsta, we know he was the first hulk. I don't need to see a issue of him fighting the same team all over again, just to be teammates again. Plus he isn't the Hulk. Banner is the only true Hulk and some ultimate verse writers for some reason, got rid of the only cool character in this comic line.

Totally hating this ".1" issue numbering crap too.

I totally forgot about those Ultimate X-Men/FF. They were utterly pointless, but like a moron I bought them along with most of these shitty Ultimate stories.

The .1 issues are like forced one-shots. I've read 4 of them and so far all have been passable. The Spidey .1 issue was the only one I thought worth while.

I thought were pretty cool. I just love them future storylines in comics.

But like i said, they did that whole wolverine whisper to wolverine bit and got me interested. Then they ignore it and did Ultimatum.

ultimate ff was pretty good and it helped to create the marvel zombie universe......but on the flip side of that coin it helped to create the marvel zombie universe that they keep going to with each version getting worse and worse.

Well, Ultimate Doom was a let down. I wanted the ending to be
I wanted Reed to kill everybody off and end that whole line

Astonishing Wolverine and Spider-man has been very entertaining, i love it. Uncanny X-force is also standing strong imo, great art and great story.

Death of spider-man? Lame. When you buy Spider man 156, you will notice that you have seen this scenario before. :(

Read Nemesis #4. It was okay but defiantly felt like a screenplay for a movie. Now I'm gonna feel like a hipster when the movie comes out and I have to flaunt that it was a comic book before a movie.

Also read Annihilators #1. I was a bit disappointed. It felt more like a show off moment for this new Space Knight chick Ikon (who I care absolutely nothing about). The Rocket Raccoon story was better but a little slow. Still it was enough to sell me on issue #2.

Annihilators was great. And this is coming from a guy who hasn't read any of the Cosmic Marvel stuff. I just got it for the Variant Mignola cover and I got a great issue that I wasn't expecting. I need to go back and read all the Cosmic stuff I missed now.

Don't get me wrong, Annihilators was a fine read but not as good as Abnett and Lanning's other cosmic stuff. It's just all these super powerful characters get their ass kicked buy some noob that it's a bit contrived.

OH. MY. GOD. Walking Dead 83 left me speechless this week. What an incredible way to keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't even imagine where it's heading next. Well done Kirkman. Well done indeed.

i dont think ive ever felt anything that strongly reading a comic before especially the ending bits shit i dont know if i can read twd anymore.

The end of Walking Dead 83 was indeed great, but the the book has become such a clusterfuck that it's taking away from how great the book is. I've always loved The Walking Dead when Rick and company where on the run. The book needs to kill off about half the cast and get back to roots.

American Vampire #13 was by far and away the best book of the week. Scott Snyder has struck gold with this series and if you haven't been following the series, do yourself a favor and jump on board.

Fear Itself starts next week. This has me very excited. Can't wait.

Could someone tell me where the recent multi colored lantern war started in GL? Was it the Sinestro Corps Special that started the whole thing off?

Can't wait to read Walking Dead #83. I like it when things become a cluster fuck. That's when people start being killed off left and right.

I just learned Brad Meltzer (the guy that doesn Decoded on the History Channel and DC writer) goes to my local comic book store.

Also anyone and expert on old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics? I'm interested in buying one but don't know what I should look for. I'd like to get something nice around the price range of $50-$100
