Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)
I haven't read the thread due to still not finishing SI so I don't know if this has been posted.

Marvel is raising the price on New Avengers and Thor from $2.99 to $3.99. Hulk was raised in last month's solicitation and Dark Avengers is priced at $3.99 from the start. They've been pricing limited series at this price point for a little while, which is the first step to a line-wide increase. You can expect to see almost all mainline titles at this price by the end of 2009. I decided awhile back that $3.99 is the amount when I stop buying comics. $4 for 20 minutes of entertainment is a horrible return on your money. This is why I'm not buying DA even though I'm pretty interested in the book. Marvel's greed is just ridiculous. They completely jumped over the $3.50 point. This is just a blatant "screw you" to the fans because they know they'll just keep buying comics. Sorry, Marvel, but my ride on the train is about to come to an end. They managed to chase me away from Amazing Spider-Man last year, a book I genuinely believed I would never stop reading. Now this is happening. Except for the occasional LS or TPB, I guess I'll be done with comics by 2010. As much as I love reading them, I won't allow myself to be screwed over.
damn 3.99 for comic books. times have seriously changed since when i was collecting.
damn 3.99 for comic books. times have seriously changed since when i was collecting.
Yeah -- the pricing and the content, typically means there really aren't that many titles for young kids IMHO.

Oh wow. I didn't even LOOK at the prices for Dark Avengers. As interested as I was in that, I'm gonna have to give Marvel a nice big "fuck you" on that one. And NA may be getting dropped too. This is ridiculous. Especially with Image or Dark Horse or whoever it was promising all their comics would stay 2.99 through 2009.

EDIT: I think it was Top Cow now that I think some.

Its one of the main reasons why I never finished Secret Invasion, comics are pretty high priced. When I did buy them I usually bought some of the WWH or other assorted issues out of the $1 bin

Is it seriously that high? I haven't bought a single issue in a few years, I just go for the trades when I have the time. I always wanted to open a shop but that'll probably never happen if those prices keep climbing that much.

So what's everyone reading?

I have a stack of what I like to call "meh" comics. I like them but I leave them for boring days at work when I have free time. I finished up a few back issues Spider-Man which is hit & miss since the writers are always changing.

Captain America, Daredevil, Batman (I would say Nightwing and Detective Comics, but since going on hiatus...), Walking Dead, Astounding Wolf-man, Invincible, Old Man Logan (not going to call it Wolverine because I'm going to drop it once the arc is done), Thunderbolts, Madman, Umbrella Academy, Final Crisis (and all the tie ins), Kick-Ass (whenever they come out), Green Lantern and eagerly awaiting Geoff Johns to get back on Flash.

Well, let's see, regarding the Batmen from left to right: Tim (take a look at the staff), Jason (that is definitely Red Robin's belt), Two-Face (obviously), and perhaps Azrael (due to the guns). :whistle2:k

Edit: I forgot Azrael is dead. I am unsure who gas mask Batman could be.

It's probably Dick watching over Damian, and Hush as the gas mask Batman. Although its weird that Damian basically has a leash on him(and its a bandage which also denotes Hush)

I hate when DC puts out images like this...

The one next to Damian as Bruce is Hush because of his recent surgery and the bandage around his leg is the dead giveaway.

I think its Tim wearing the suit Batman wore when he became Robin, Dick wearing the suit Batman wore when he became Robin, then Jason who has the guns with Damien and Hush.

Goddammit, just give me Dick Grayson as Batman! Seriously, I can't think of anyone else people want to take over the mantle more.

I'm going to be at a comics store this weekend, since it's close to where I've got errands to run. Does anyone have any recommendations for graphic novels or one-shot stories that came out recently? I haven't read comics in a while, but I'd like to pick up something for an upcoming trip I have.

Hey guys. Have any of you guys seen this action figure in your local comic store?

Finally started reading Walking Dead, got the first four trades. How many are there now? Finishing up Planetary, I love Ellis.

There are 9 Walking Dead trades so far.

Currently reading: everything
Currently loving: Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, Invincible,Daredevil, Justice Society of America, Superman, Action Comics, Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corp, Berserk, Captain America, Fables, Umbrella Academy, Oh My Goddess! and X-factor (which to me is the best X-title out there, well besides X-force.)

Obama in comics is just another way for Marvel to let you know that they are still the cool and hip publisher they have always been. Just overlook the 4 dollar price on some of those comics that just came out of nowhere.

The Batman image by Tony Daniels got me really excited about the Battle for the Cowl mini. Even though in the end it will be Dick Grayson under the mask, because he honestly deserves it. I mean after Prodigal I can't think of anyone else that can be the Dark Knight. I'm sure in a few years Tim will be ready, just like in The Future is Now storyline from Teen Titans.

Great BM,

Here are a few of my favorite one shots and graphic novels that came out in recent years:

Pride of Bahgdad, Joker, Fables: 1001 Nights, Umbrella Academy, and Y the Last Man if you haven't checked those out.

can someone explain to me the obama/spiderman publishing?

I know very little about comic books, but I really want to pick one up to read and another as a possible investment.

Why are there so many versions? I am so confused. Do they all have the same content? Have they stopped publishing?

Where can I get a good deal on them?

Finished watching some of the Marvel movies. I liked The Punisher with Thomas Jane, The Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton, and Iron Man. All and all, they were pretty good.

Bumping, it's been awhile since anyone posted in this thread. So what's everyone reading? I just got done reading a bunch of Fables TPBs. Very nice comic. I'll be subscribing to it from now on.

Have you tried Jack of Fables yet, Rodimus? It's also fairly entertaining, but it's a bit more... slight than Fables. Worth checking out once you read the point in Fables where Jack leaves the cast.

id also reccomend jack of fables and house of mystery

I haven't read any actual Jack of Fables yet, however I did read past the part in the main story where it spins off from (Jack goes to Hollywood). I also added Jack of Fables to my subscription since I like the character of Jack. I'll just catch up on the story by reading the wiki page.

I've been collecting "The Stand: Captian Trips" Limited series. I haven't read a single issue until today because I tought it would be more enjoyable if I read the entire series strait through. I wasn't wrong. It has me wanting to read the novel again. I think I'll do that with the rest of the series where I wait till an entire chapter of the story is out then read them. I know it's easier to just get the TPB, but I simly enjoying owning the actual comics.

Most titles still come out once a month but there are exceptions.

Without spoiling too much the X-Men are still hurting from the House of M event. The X-Men moved base to San Fransisco, X-Force lead by Wolverine has become a covert ops X-Men team ment to do the "dirty work", X-Factor is an investigation team specializing in helping mutants.

The only zombie comics I've read are the Marvel Zombie series and some of the World War Zombie series.

Walking Dead is out monthly. Up until last year it was pretty random (from once a month to once every two months, etc.), but Kirkman has been putting them out on a good regular monthly basis and good thing too because easily is the comic I always read first.

Other then that, been reading Umbrella Academy: Dallas. Say what you want about Gerard Way (lead singer of My Chemical Romance and writer for Umbrella), but he writes a good comic. I'm kinda on the fence with Battle for the Cowl because RIP/Final Crisis/Last Rites was such a huge cluster fuck and not to bash on Tony Daniel, but should they really be tossing that huge an event on a guy who's more known for drawing?

Also me and my friend were talking about how before Countdown DC finally had a pretty basic and cohesive universe with some continuity. Then Death of the New Gods and Countdown came out and Final Crisis came out and landed the finishing blow (Orion died a total of three or four times? Ridiculous).

thanks you guys all for the info on the comics. freakin san fran wow thats so damn wierd never would have imagined the xmen living on the weast coast but then again i never got why they didnt have more academys all over anyway. got my homework cut out for me then figuring out when i last read any and where to go from there.

until then ill be waiting to read some more walking dead that series is freakin undead crack. marvel zombies is good too although something about it is very disturbing to me.not to mention it didnt make sense to me that some of them would become zombies considering their powers.

The reason for this is becasue the "Zombie Virus" only effects people with powers. The first few Marvel Zombie stories were fun, but Marvel Zombies 2 & 3 were kinda lame, so I'll be skipping the 4th installment.

Marvel Zombies 3 was just a lame excuse for them to relaunch the team nobody wanted, The Midnight Sons. Only good to come out of that whole thing was zombie Deadpool.

While the story was complete dribble and just an excuss to show blood n' guts, Marvel Zombies 3 did make me a fan of Machine Man.

Nextwave already did that for me. I Think the writing in Marvel Zombies 3 for Machine Man felt like it was trying to channel Warren Ellis' take on Machine Man, but instead to me it felt a bit too forced in making him "bad ass."

Only problem I had with Marvel Zombies 2 was it just felt smaller in scale compared to the first series. Though I'm definitely going to skip on the forth series (but I would FULLY support them if they animated this on DVD).

also can someone tell me how long the karate kid has been at marvel? i bought the marvel zombies hardcover dealy last year and inside there was something written by the guy who did the series saying he , the karate kid, told him to do the series or something. makes me wonder how long hes been there and it kinda explains why hes not acting anymore.

midnight sons were always some of the better comics characters back in the day. im still hoping someday they will do a nightstalkers movie series . it has to be done with all new actors though since snipes is in jail and that guy who played hannibal sucked. and hopefully itd be r rated like a horror/action/supernatural flick. and if they did a cameo with ghostrider find someone else to do him too freakin cage sucked.

though i will give marvel props for mixing in their heros in movies. theyve got a pretty good film run going if you can ignore spiderman 3 and that first hulk film. they just need to step up their videogame game.

After reading Zombies 3 I started looking into what else Machine Man has been in recently which lead me to Nextwave. I feel stupid for passing it up while everyone was praising it. I plan on picking it up on my next visit to the comic store.

And ignore The Punisher, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, X-Men 3, Blade Trinity, Elektra and I'm sure missing out on one or two. Though at least they're showing they give a bit of a shit now by trying to establish a continuity in the movies.

i will give them slight props for the recent punisher film. it had good gore but aside from that pretty forgetable.

I've been meaning to start reading The Walking Dead for a while, but having to catch up on 9 trades is kinda off putting. Isn't there those 4 hardcover editions that covers up to issue 50 or something? I just took a quick look at Amazon and Wikipedia.

Started reading Walking Dead since November. It's a fast read going through the regular TPB's. Highly Recommended. I'm in an Ellis kick and finished reading the three Planetary's. I want more.

Didn't get to see it. I Liked how it got look of the Punisher better compared to Thomas Jane, but the chandler scene in the trailer left bit of bad taste in my mouth.

You're better off just getting the trades since as soon as about 4-6 issues are out, they immediatly put them out as trades. In which case all you'd need to do is maybe get two or so issues to catch up and collect it monthly (and suffer monthly for the wait for new issues like the rest of us).

I give them props for the last punisher movie. It was good compared to the first one.

the latest walking dead was awesome
that guy they found back in ricks old town is going to be trouble down the road. cool heard scene too i never thought about that before and its odd nobody ever mentioned it in anything zombie related ( how a gunshot heard so many miles away would attract every zombie who could hear it).

Just got done reading Battle for the Cowl #1. Not bad, easily better then I expected and I still HATE the character of Damian because I get the feeling no one one knows how to write him (as evident in this issue). Though as good as the first issue was, I'm skeptic on picking up the other tie in issues.

Wrong Ralph Macchio. The Marvel editor Ralph Macchio has been writing and editing for Marvel since the early 1980s. He isn't related to the actor Ralph Macchio.

Not the same guy, but industry people call him the karate kid sometimes as a joke.

I also liked Battle for the Cowl a lot more the I thought, I agree with you no one knows what to do with Damian. I also thought it was a little strange he didn't want to fight Croc or Ivy just for the reason the last time we saw him he wanted to kill all of Batman's villians. And shouldn't he at least stood a chance aganist them?
