Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

I wouldn't tell people that. ;)
My Dad watches every bad Nick Cage movie (not ironically) and he couldn't sit through it. I only made it because Ghost Rider was one of my favorite comics as a kid (Johnny Blaze series). I did like the special effects and I do love Christopher Lambert because he is such a terrible actor (mean guns and highlander are awesome), but still it was not a good movie at all. ;)

I haven't seen Avengers yet or either of the new spiderman movies, but I have to say my favorite Marvel Movie to date was IronMan. Maybe because it was the closest to "reality".

Deadly Class is so good I want to take it behind a middle school and get it pregnant.

The new Flash Annual.

I'm loving the hell out of the future Flash stuff, to the point that I'll buy the book for this arc. I thought the blue costume was odd at first, but now that I've seen it more I can't help but think it's pretty damn awesome.

The new Wally is still majorly disappointing and infuriating.

I can't help but try to speculate where the story is gonna go, though, so here's my guess at the end result: somehow the future Flash's abilities will be passed on to Wally. It just seems odd to me that a kick-ass blue Flash costume is introduced at the same time Wally makes his New 52 debut while coincidentally wearing a blue hoodie. Plus DC has said that a member of the Flash family will be joining the relaunched Teen Titans down the road, so there's that. If I'm right, it's surprising that they're giving him powers so soon... although I suppose DC needs a new Kid Flash after that Barr Torr crap I heard about in Teen Titans.

Rai #1 was also great, although I'm let down by the Pullbox Plus extras. I'm assuming all the Spylocke stuff (the movie review, the rundown of the movie series) and also that Lula Lee commercial weren't in the regular edition? I kind of wish I hadn't spent the extra money, because it doesn't seem worth it.

Still, the art is pretty amazing. I liked Crain's work when I was younger, but my opinion gradually changed up until I HATED his stuff by the time Necrosha-X happened. I swore off any books drawn by him after that, but the Rai previews were just too beautiful to pass up.

Deadly Class and Black Science are my new favorites.
Black Science I keep reading, but I still have no idea what's going on. Like every issue I feel like I'm playing keep up and I think that's the flow of the series where it's really just Lost in Space in between dimensions and universes. I Don't know, that series is kinda weird to me despite it being Remender.

Speaking of him, Uncanny Avengers annual was...alot of fun. Having a change of pace from the bleak as hell setting of normal Uncanny Avengers was a fun romp with the Supernatural Avengers.

I keep hearing good things about Deadly Class. Hmmm, may need to pick it up.
They keep doing reprints of the first few issues so I don't think it's hard to get caught up unless you're waiting for the trade. Though really it feels like a manga type story scenario, but the time frame and well written angst and social politics of growing up make it stand out and it still has so many things it can explore. I Think it's become my go to "first read from the pull list" book. That and the art, colors and layouts are gorgeous.

Any impressions from Futures End #0? Wasn't able to make it my local comic shop, sadly. I may have to resort to ebay for the books I wanted. As much as I like Batman Beyond, I don't want to get another weekly series unless the story is extremely intriguing.

It was a nice read/sneak peek with 35 years in the future Brother Eye has basically pulled a Borg and assimilated or killed majority of DC's heroes and villains and Terry McGuiness is now sent back to stop it. It's a rather intriguing concept, but like many if not all crossovers from the big two, I doubt it'll change anything.

Thanks for the rundown!

I've come to accept the fact that events in mainstream comics won't change much, and if it does then it is temporary at best. My only concern is whether or not the stories sound interesting and features some of my favorite characters. I figure the journey can be pretty cool even if the end result is pretty underwhelming. Sounds like I may enjoy this (seriously, you sold me with "Borg") so I'll check out the main series for at least the first month to see if it grabs me.

Anyway, Midtown comics came through for me! They put their FCBD stuff up on their site this morning, and assuming they didn't oversell, it looks like I got the Futures End #0 and Megaman/Sonic comics I wanted in addition to some other stuff. Cost me $12 overall, but there was a pretty good selection this year and I got to avoid lines. Oddly the Arkham Origins heroclix are on their site but never came in stock, but I can live without those.

Yup... those early reports are 100% confirmed now. They've shoehorned too much Batman mythology - his rogues gallery in particular - into the pilot. Do we really need to see a young Poison Ivy? I don't think so, personally.

I just hope someone fine-tuned the dialogue before filming. Nothing terrible really stuck out in the trailer, although Cobblepot's little speech was bordering on cheesy.

Still, the show looks watchable - in the same kind of way that The Cape and No Ordinary Family were just watchable. I'm surprised they had the death scene for Thomas and Martha look so abrupt, but I'm just glad I don't have to see those damned pearls drop again.

So, The Flash and Constantine have both been picked up as full series. As much as I'm looking forward to Flash, I'm much more excited about Constantine. I've been looking for a decent show about the occult ever since I abandoned Supernatural, and this one just happens to feature a character who has become one of my favorites since I began reading DC comics.

Meanwhile on the Gotham front, it's been confirmed that they're going to feature the Joker and that his origin will be heavily inspired by The Killing Joke, leading me to believe once and for all that the cheesy comedian we'll be seeing in the Gotham pilot will indeed become the Clown Prince of Crime. Sigh. If they would only go the Red Hood route and no farther than that, I'd be sold on the idea, but they've specifically mentioned Joker... so I suppose we'll see how that goes.

They also say that they have the entire serialized story plotted out in advance, so maybe there will eventually be a decent payoff for watching the show.

I'm more excited for iZombie because I enjoyed the comic, but than again I enjoy anything with Allred's pencils and either his wife or son doing inking and coloring.

I'd have to see a trailer before making a judgement on it, because I had never even heard of the comic before the show was announced.

Should probably wait for a Constantine trailer before getting excited too, I suppose, because the costume is ridiculously easy to get right compared to everything else.

Don't have a lot of faith in Gotham, but I'll be watching it anyway while hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

Flash is the only one I'm not even a little bit worried about, because the people behind it just have so much good will built up thanks to Arrow. There have been a couple of missteps during Arrow's 2 seasons, but overall it is insanely enjoyable to watch for comic book fans. Never thought a character like Deathstroke would get an appearance on a tv show, let alone an entire season focused on bringing him down.

I do have some faith in Gotham if you disregard the Batman thing. I am disappointed in the way they're introducing the villains, since they think having the Joker is the only way to get more people. I am a fan of Donal Logue, and am surprised that just 10 years ago he was a comedic actor and now with his age he's pretty hard boiled.

I'm...intrigued. Much more than I am "BEFORE POISON IVY! BEFORE CATWOMAN!"

...ehh, looks watchable, which I suppose is all I should have expected.

He doesn't seem to be the greatest actor. The woman playing Liv seems to be pretty awful from her brief clips, and did they just kill Chas off in the trailer? 'Cause I know he's in the pilot, and the guy that got offed was a taxi driver... so maybe. The effects look pretty good for a tv show, though, although pilots do typically have big budgets.

Wow that's pretty cool I love shows with demons and angels and shit I will tune in for this that girl even looks like rachel weisz

He even called when he was going to cancel the apocalypse. What a badass

That's something that bothered me with the movie why make it a big deal he was one of the only two pilots who can navigate a jagger/jageger solo why did he have to take the aussie with him? Also since this is the comic book thread the comic for pacific rim was pretty good I hope they make another.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Constantine. Looks like it could be decent.

The way I understood was that even though he was able to pilot one solo it did a lot of damage to his brain. You wouldn't want to put one of the key parts of the plan on one single guy who is already dying. Who knows how long he could another solo mission.

Constantine doesn't look bad. I'm surprised it is a NBC show. He should be smoking, but oh well.

The Killing Joke Joker is how joker should be. None of this heath ledger cutting off his face bullshit.

Flash's costume looks lame.

The gotham trailer gave me the chills. Hopefully the show will do the same.

That is all.

It is really odd not seeing him with a cigaret for an extended period of time. And doesn't he pronounce his name ConstanTINE, not ConstanTEEN? I could swear I've read him correct people on a couple of different occasions before in the comics.

Still, I do have high hopes for the show. I really hope it's at least on par with the first two seasons of Supernatural, rather than the convoluted mess of a parody it later became.

Rachel Weisz is so sexy BTW, but that chick from Constantine is also on True Blood. She is Nora
(Eric's "sister")

You are right about the name. Alan Moore said it is pronounced con-stan-tine (not teen) and he should know since he created him ;)

I just checked imdb and it is listed as a TV movie. Is it not going to be an ongoing series?

Well that's... odd. I haven't heard this first "episode" referred to as anything other than the pilot, and the news has specifically been that it was "ordered to series" by NBC. I certainly won't complain if the pilot turns out to be feature length, though.

And I thought that's how it was pronounced. I've been reading it as "TINE" in my head since I started reading JL Dark, 'cause I think I saw an old panel years ago where John was explaining it to someone. Then I guess I read it again when I downloaded the first few issues of the original Hellblazer to see how I liked it. It's a little odd to hear it the other way again like it was in the movie, which I also like, for the record.

That reminds me that I need to buy some of the new Hellblazer reprint volumes they've been putting out, but it's tough to spend additional money on comics other than my monthly subs. I like the new Constantine book well enough, but I wish they'd let it be its own thing. It's been saddled with crossovers since it started, first with Trinity War, then Blight for what seems like a long time, and now it'll have a Futures End tie-in as well in September.

I know I'm probably super out of the loop in this thread, but anyone been reading New Avengers or vanilla Avengers? Both are pretty fucking good. I like that AIM is trying really hard to not look like complete shit heads and make a bad name for themselves.

Also, Ultimate Spidey #1 was great, but I'm finding myself less excited by the cliffhangers for these Ultimate books the more I read them.

I've been enjoying New Avengers again since they dropped Bianchi, but man it is moving so slowly. Alot of the issues are just set up and kinda feels like it could've been reduced to a few panels, but instead it becomes a whole book. I Like where the book is headed now where they're basically going to fight the Justice League now because the Illuminati's are total assholes. Avengers itself is enjoyable, but I feels it suffers from the opposite of New Avengers at times in that it moves so fast. "Here's some other Avengers, here's AIM, here's A.I.M. androids who are fully self replicating, here's Hulk/Banner unraveling everything." Though I think this maybe also because the books are both meant to compliment one another in that there are some effects you wouldn't notice unless you read both, but they're both written so differently that it's a bit of a mindfuck. Avengers World...I don't care about honestly. I Think with those two books and Uncanny Avengers (which I ALMOST want to complain it should move on from Apocalypse Twins, but the story is so good) that I'm fine with that for my Avengers needs.

I totally forgot about Uncanny Avengers until you brought it up. I think that's my most favorite Avengers book ever. I hope the Chronos Corps gets their own spinoff. I'm agree about Avengers World. I don't think there could be a worse Avengers book. It's soooo boring. Even Mighty Avengers is better and that book is goddamned silly.

And Uncanny had the goddamn series regular writer work on the annual as well. That rarely happens in Marvel and he actually made a fun one off story, which is a nice distraction from the doom and gloom and constant death's of the normal series. The Supernatural Avengers dressed as nerd's playing Dungeons and Dragons in the library will forever be how I associate them. And World the problem is I don't care for the lives of majority of these characters going off and doing one off adventures. Especially with the ones specifically written or created for Avengers during the Hickman run, since none of them really stood out.

Well apparently I bought Megaman #34 and #35 for no real reason, because my only interest was in the Megaman X backups and both of those are what made up the "origin of X" in the FCBD Sonic/MMX flipbook. What makes it worse is that I paid an additional fee to get the flipbook from Midtowncomics.com, not knowing it wasn't original material.

Sweet.

It could have been worse. I saw a tshirt at comicon that had the old batman tv show logo with a no sign through it, but instead of batman it say "affleck"

I like it quite a bit. They went a little overboard with the seams (which some people are calling veins) but otherwise I think it's great. I've always preferred the short ears, and it appears as though it won't be entirely flat black which is a massive improvement. I've never liked the TDKR bat symbol, though, and I'd have preferred something similar to the Arkham logo.

It does make me wonder what Wonder Woman's costume will look like, assuming she suits up in this movie at all.

did I miss something with carnage? last I saw of him he was inside of a brain dead kassidy and then I look online and see a deadpool vs carnage storyline

The last time I saw him, Carnage was ripped in half and thrown into the sun.

Apparently we're both behind on the times.

I Usually don't give a shit about Barry Allen, but that teaser easily got me more hyped than the Constantine or Gotham stuff.
