Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

damn shame he could have been an interesting character if not for how he was handled. im sure he will be back eventually if not they will come up with more of logans kids down the line. hell im curious if sabretooth has any other kids aside from greydon and whats up with the rest of those mutants who were brought back to life by the black queen? arent some of them still running around?
I think he just became irrelevant. Not that many people cared about Daken when he was a Dark Avenger or when he had his own series that nobody bought.
I bought two Daken issues that tied into X-23.

Does that count?

I was intrested in the character during Origins. I even read his stuff after he took over Wolvie's ongoing, but it wasn't that great. I bought the first few issues of his series, but dropped it. It was really bad.

You're never 100% sure what's going on with him, or what side he's on. It was okay at first, but it got old. I don't know what he's been up to recently.

Going to drop Deadpool. It's been stale the last several issues.

Anyone reading Herc? I dropped it a few months back during the Spidey Island crossover. Curious if it's picked up? I loved Incredible Herc from a few years back, some great stuff. Wish it could get back to that greatness again.

Been getting back into comics a little after starting to read Walking Dead again. I only made it into the 20s many years ago when I read it and i'm nearly at that point again. The new Spiderman story sounds awesome with Peter dieing and all... I'm going to read that next i think and looking into some of the other series reboots online.

Also for all yall getting Avengers vs Xmen, I heard some guy from Marvel on Geektime on SiriusXM talking about a free Marvel iPhone/iPad app that give you a bunch of extras when you scan stuff in from those comics.

I know Avenging Spider-man does, or did for the first several issues. However, they usually charge more for it. Also, the "year one" type graphic novel hardcovers that Marvel is doing (Fantastic Four and Spider-Man are out already, X-Men, Dr. Strange and more are on the way) also come with a digital copy code.
I bought two Daken issues that tied into X-23.

Sadly, no because I had no idea that even happened. I'm a fan of X-23 and I was going to jump into the series, but then it got canned (final issue is in the next month or two). However, they moved her into Avengers Academy so that's a plus.

It ended earlier this month with #21, which itself had absolutely no wording within it at all, just art.

The series wasn't bad, you should pick up the trades if you get a chance.

I haven't read anything of Avengers Academy despite picking it up since X-23's debut. I should get around to doing that.
Are there any marvel comics that come with a code for the digital copy as well?
All the $3.99 books are coming with codes starting this month, I think. All the Ultimates and the Season One GNs do too.

On that note (the reason I came here), I'm wondering if anyone knows where I may be able to buy the digital codes off people who just want the physical comics. Maybe one of you guys? But I'm wondering if there is maybe a bigger comic forum with a buy/sell/trade section. I don't have the space to keep the physical copies, but would gladly help someone save a few bucks if they weren't going to use the digital copies anyway. Thanks!

Same here, I'm moving out in a few months. I'll live solo for a couple of months and then the wife (by then) will move in. She already disapproves of the game, movie and action figure collection but I'm bringing it in anyway so I doubt we'd have space for comics. I've been buying a few digital versions and would like to keep it that way.

Has a problem with your movie collection??

If your upcoming wife has an issue with your hobbies, what makes her the one for you? I can't imagine that you're just going to let her come in and take control of what you can/can't spend your earnings on.

(before you assume that I'm not married, I am. And have been for 6 years and with her for 5 prior. We also have two children as well.) While I applaud you for going down the marital road, I'm irritated that you'd let her come in and disrupt your hobby. "Love knows no bounds" right? Seems like she's already stepping over a line.

Haha I was gonna go there but didn't wanna go there. I couldn't imagine getting married without living with the person first. My wife and I still have little issues with our home and how each of us prefer things, and I lived with her three years before we got married.

Best of luck to you though. I hope it goes smoothly. Definitely tricky.

^ Read issue #15 last night. IMO it has been a little slow in recent issues, but it's still a good read. With Locke & Key ending soon Morning Glories will be my go to suspense thriller.

That's where it's a bit tricky to explain. She doesn't approve of my hobbies but we agreed that I will continue to play/watch/collect the things I am into now. I'm just now getting into comic books so I don't want to start up a new hobby that'll take up space since we'll be moving to an apartment which will be much smaller than the place I share with my brother right now. I can sort of see where you guys took it as me saying that I won't be able to buy any of my hobbies. I stopped buying action figures last year becasue I don't have any more space but I'm still buying games and movies. While she doesn't like that I buy it, she likes to watch me play and she likes to pick out a movie when she comes over.

(I wouldn't have assumed you weren't married; it wouldn't have mattered to me, I'm not one of *those* guys ;)).

But back on topic, I honestly don't know where to start with comics. I bought the digital versions of The Avengers Vs. X-Men and all of the Walking Dead comic. There's obviously a backstory to AvX that I am not familiar with. I also bought Planet Hulk and World War Hulk which I will read this weekend. I like the Marvel Universe, mainly Spider Man and X-Men stuff, so if any of those come with digital codes and you guys are willing to part with them I'd be happy to buy 'em off of you.

If you haven't already, check out Joss Whedon & John Cassaday's run on Astonishing X-Men (current volume, issues 1-24). Doesn't rely too heavily on outside events and what you don't know is usually pretty easy to pick up on... knowing the gist of House of M pretty much does it. Highly recommended. Seeing that Joss Whedon was writing a series featuring Kitty Pryde got me back into comics after not really reading anything since the mid-90s.
late to the party but Morning Glories has reestablished my love of comics.
I still get Morning Glories but ever since this current "P.E." story arc has started, it's become pretty stale on the writing end of things. The art is just about the only think keeping me attached to the series. Nick Spencer quickly became one of the most generic comic writers in the industry when his early stuff was really great. Honestly, I think he should stay away from super hero books and focus more on his original ideas.

Another thing that really irks me about Morning Glories is that it is suffering from the same flaws that "LOST" had as a TV show. You got this wacky sense of time and history that keeps getting more and more distorted with each issue and it just makes for a lot of speculation (something I despise in comics) and confusion on the reader's part.

I can see that. Lets just hope Spencer has an ending in sight and isn't going to write himself into a corner.

I would definitely check out the first few Ultimate Spiderman arcs--especially the first six issues retelling the origin story. I'll second Whedon's Astonishing X-Men. I didn't really like House of M that much. Otherwise, haven't read too much recent X-Men. Oldie, but a goodie, God Love Man Kills.

just for clarity, i wasn't recommending house of m, just saying that as long as you get the gist of what happened there you should be fine as far as backstory goes in AXM :)

When you say "we talked about it and agreed that the hobbies could continue", I doubt you had to stop and think "hmmm, will I continue doing these activities I enjoy?"

So... it just sounds like she gave you permission to keep doing the nerdy shit she doesn't like.

You better start turning this ship around now or you're going to be driving a minivan before you know it.

Well, I saw AXM and thought "AvX" because I knew he mentioned getting into AvX. And if that is indeed the case, you do need to know who hope is. My apologies for the confusion.
I can see that. Lets just hope Spencer has an ending in sight and isn't going to write himself into a corner.
I grabbed the Vol. 1 hardcover at the library but was sad to see that it also includes the Vol. 2 TPB so now I have to wait god knows how long to see Vol. 3 TPB. Or I might just get it on the comixology deal to read on the pad.

I could tell by the end of Vol. 2 that there were going to be some continuity issues along with the varying timelines, but it's still quite the treat to use this as my re-entry into comics from a good decade off.

Grabbed de:TALES from Moon/Ba as well from the library. Kind of hard to follow, but I might have just been really tired last night.

the new ultimate spiderman is good too but my main gripe is every damn issue feels like its too short. i never get enough of the story unlike the walking dead where even though its a to be continued you feel satisfied with what you got and cant wait for more.
Anyone reading the new Batman? I love it so far. I'm 3 issues in.
Only gets better. Cant wait for the Night of the Owls crossover.

Should I be reading anything else along side of this? Does Nightwing or Birds of Prey or any of the comics set in Gotham City intersect somehow? Any recommendations on the New 52? So far I'm reading:

Teen Titans (awesome)
Batman (awesome)
Supergirl (really good)
Superman (OK)

At the moment, you don't need any of the other Batbooks to understand the story. I think starting this month or next month the storyline starts branching out into the other Gotham books based on how Batman #7 ends.

As for my recommendations:

Wonder Woman - I could never get into the Wonder Woman character, but Azzarrello has done an amazing job with her. Best Wonder Woman I've ever read and Cliff Chiangs' art is wonderful. Just wish the books weren't so quick to read.

Action Comics - Depends on your take on Grant Morrison. I think he's been doing a good job, but I really wish the backup story wasn't there to make the book a dollar cheaper. I hear the recent issue is sort of "meh", but I haven't read it yet. But I enjoy the art, I love Morrison's take on Superman, and it's been pretty action packed. Definately prefer this over the Superman book although Giffen/Jurgens wasn't a bad issue.

Voodoo - They switched writers recently, and I've heard bad things with the recent turn of events. Might explain why the original writer left. But I would recommend picking up the Ron Marz issues. I really enjoyed them although her one issue profession as a stripper left some people cold, and the art is absolutely gorgeous.

JLA - Ehhhh....I love the art, but the story was very meh. I'm curious what they are going to do, but not sure why they put Darkseid out there front and center in the first arc. Issue 7 was definately filler, but apparently the next arc or so is supposed to tie in to the mysterious Pandora character from the end of Flashpoint that made appearances throughout the first issues. Issue 7 had a backup story with her in it along with the Phantom Stranger that intrigued me.

Flash - Haven't read it, but seems to be one of the books I've heard some of the most goodwill towards. Love Manapauls art, and didn't think he would be a good writer. Apparently I was wrong as I can't name a single bad thing I've heard from it.

I don't think Nightwing intersects with the Batman story, but it's still very good from what I've read so far.

I'd HIGHLY recommend Animal Man, Swamp Thing and I, Vampire. All outstanding.

I gave up on Detective Comics. The regular Batman book just blows it out the water.
are these any good?
I thought Rise of the Governor was well written. It was weaved into the comic's storyline very good. I'm eager to hear about this book because it seems like its gonna pick up right where the first one did.

I highly recommend it if you're a fan of the comic series and are at least through the Governor's storyline.

If you haven't been getting Animal Man and Swamp Thing then you really need to do whatever you can to get those issues. Seriously, the best two books in the new 52. And they are crossing over with each other later this year.

AvX #1 was a pretty decent start for the event. I'm not really like the Romita art on certain characters like Iron Man (he looks fat) and Beast (who looks nothing like a cat), but the rest of his work is pretty solid in the issue. My main gripe is how much of a dick Cyclops is being. Benids must really have some serious disdain for Cyclops (not that I care about him or anything, he is a stale character).

The Flash is probably my favorite DC title right now, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Javery, definitely check out Aquaman. I know, I know, it's Aquaman. Trust me, this ain't your daddy's Aquaman.

I've said Aquaman in every sentence so far.

Aquaman.

Also, Suicide Squad has been surprisingly good.

I got through TWD #90. Wow...I'm eager to find out what happens next but I'm going to wait until volume 18 comes out. I like having them setup as volumes instead of individual comics, sure it's all digital but it looks cleaner that way. :)

I'm about to start on the prelude to planet hulk.

I really recommend reading the swamp thing and animal man together. They almost seem like companion pieces. They usually come out the same week and I read them one after another. Great stuff.

Well...I just finished Y: The last man and meh...I think I had my expectations too high.
I wish the would've made Yorick more of a man, I know if I was the last man on earth I wouldn't spend 5 years looking for a girl I've only been dating for a short time. Definitely would have spread the seed around quite a bit more. The last issue was out there as well to say the least.

Also I don't know if your excited about this as I am but I cannot wait for July and the New Masters of the Universe, Skeletor and He-man are back for a 6 issue limited adventure.

I need some help. I've never been a comic book guy (I really never tried until now), but I'm a fan of The Walking Dead series on AMC, so I bought The Walking Dead Compendium #1 and am halfway through it already (got it at the beginning of the week). I also wanted to read Watchmen since the movie came out, so I grabbed that as well (haven't started it).

I was wondering if there are many other books that cram a bunch of issues in one, good story, more adult themed (like TWD) or some of the bigger characters. I was looking at stuff like Marvels, Sandman, Preacher, etc but I really want the whole series or a large chunk of it and I'm not sure how to tell one apart from the other. I don't really want to buy a bunch of pieces and if I can get a whole series (like Watchmen) or half the series (like TWD) or even something like the first fifty issues of X-Men in one purchase, I'd much rather do it that way... and of course I am a cheap ass.

Please help. Thanks in advance.
