Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - For Liquid Metal we would Slime!

I just beat
Monag and got access to the Alchemy Pot
. I'm starting to reminisce about Final Fantasy XIII here a bit despite this one coming out earlier in Japan. The mechanics are rolling out REALLY slow. The last boss was sort of tough because my Mage was low on magic. Dragon Quest games don't give you many 'restore magic' items.

Received my first downloadable quest today (From loading up my online store). It's #121, but I'm not sure what's required to be able to get it. It's in Upover which is a town later in the game, although it may have other requirements before you can get it.
Anybody know where the red sign is?
It's
on an island in the middle of the left continent. You are able to take your boat in there, just head west from Alltrades.

Well, you can buy the 30MP restore fairly cheap. I think I only used it a couple times towards the end on my priest.

Just sealed the pot and now back to grinding and questing.
Completed some mini quest and am enjoying the game.
With my 4 guys I'm not having much trouble with bosses.

Christ, seems like a lot of people on this board around the same spot. I just finished Coffinwell myself and was
back at the Observatory
when I stopped for the night. I agree, this game is really easy thus far. Has to be by far the easiest of all DQs thus far. It kind of kills some of the magic for me as DQ is supposed to be somewhat of a grindan adventure.

Changed up my party a bit again. Going to put my hero Warrior into MA training for a bit until I learn Psyche Up, then switch him back. Trying out my MA as a Ranger since it gives additional opportunities for agility boosts, we'll see where that takes me.

After checking out the rest of the Acquisitiveness skills, I might be ready to send my Thief back to Priest. And I guess my Minstrel will stay put.

What happens if you change our vocation?
Does he still keep his old skills?

I was doing the abbey quest to I came to the Fishing town now Im doing that quest.
I went back to Stronway to get some money from the bank for armor and unlocked my first store and quest from ther DQVC. I bought an attack ring for my Martial artist and the medicnes they have for alchemy.

I like the alchemy pot. Made trackies for my Martial artist will upgrade them again when I find some more beast hides. I also made some bunny ears for my Mage with the headband and bunny tail that boost three of her stats. I wanna find better weapons for my Martial Artist, Lee and Priest, Aang. They are both using Oaken Poles know that do pretty cool damage

Also loved the first time my main guy, Aynjel went into Coup de grace and was flipping around . That was pretty cool. And my Mage, Mystic did too.

So far Im loving the game and can't wait to find new recipes.

My team so far is:

Aynjel- Minstrel- Lv17
Mystic- Mage- Lv15
Lee- Martial Artist- Lv 15
Aang- Priest- Lv 15

I leveling up now for money and lvs, wann upgrade Mages armor

Yeah, it's going to be easy more or less through the entire story. The difficulty jumps a little bit after you get the boat and are able to sail around. Then towards the end the bosses can be a little bit of a pain if you're not a decent level. Hell, I was at the boss right before the second to last dungeon at level 28, but couldn't beat the boss because his party attacks just raped my party and it forced me to grind up to obtain a party wide heal.

Story is short too and can be completed in roughly 30 hours. No advance classes or class grinding needed.

The way I understand it is that everything transfers over. However, if that vocation cannot equip a certain weapon type, it will make a weapon tree useless unless you max it to 100. As for the non-weapon trees, I believe they carry over too. So those +Stats and what not should keep with you on vocation change.

The only thing that doesn't carry over between jobs are spells. So even if two spells use white magic (Priest, Thief), they have to earn them through level-ups. Any class skills learned are retained, and any weapon skills (if they share a weapon, or you max out the weapon) remain.

But of course you start at level 1 again. When you switch back to a previously-used job you are back at the level you left off at.

I've changed again, mostly getting back to what I planned after some diversions to build up skills:

Warrior - level 19 Gladiator - level 1
Ranger - level 14
Priest - level 20
Minstrel - level 19 Armamentalist - level 5

I still don't love the Minstrel, but neither am I big on Thief or Mage, so I'll just stick it out there until something more attractive shows up.

Edit: Hello, Armamentalist!

I've just beaten the
desert area with the hot but selfish queen
and have switched my jobs.

Right now I've got:

Paladin - lvl. 12
Gladiator - lvl ~15
Priest - Lvl. 23
Mage - Lvl 23

So whats the point of switching jobs if you get put back at lv 1.
Wouldnt it be better to just create a new guy.

Was gonna turn my Minstrel into a warrior but not if he gets reset at lv 1.
And when do u get the new classes like Paladin and Ranger, they sound cool.

I'm thinking about getting this game, but am still unsure.
Besides the Gamestop event on the 31st, would I miss anything if I start late?

I'm reading things about downloadable quests and such and I'm concerned that I'll miss out on some time sensitive events.

you get new quest over wifi and they are totally random each day
so u dont miss anything if u dont get it early on
though its worth a day one buy for me

Found some info on gamefaqs for unlockin new classes
Gladiator- Need someone with dragon slash and ability to get super high tension (quest giver in in basement of alltrades abby}
Armamamentalist- Ability to cast wizard ward (quest giver is the guy in red near jack of alltrades}
Ranger- A thief with toxic dagger ability (quest giver is at the base of Zere rocks)
Paladin- A warrior with whippingboy ability (quest giver is the lady on the roof of Gleeba castle behind the fountian)

You keep the permanent stat upgrades (that ones you obtain skill points from) from class to class. Not the skills or spells though. Plus you can switch back to the old class at any time and still have the old level, spells, and skills you had in that class.

I got to Alltrades Abbey at lunch, but I'm not changing shit for the meantime. My husband (who has played over 300 hrs) says it's not really worth it to switch classes until post-game. Besides, the game is very easy as it is. Also, I feel like I just started playing the game and it's already allowing me to switch classes.

I agree. Id rather just create a new guy.
Ill wait till post gamne and then maybe change.

Damn your hubby must lov that game.

You're missing Sage & Luminary.

Sage - Get the final hit on a Great Troll in the final dungeon with Frizz, a Mage ability (Quest is in Gettingham Palace on a bookshelf)
Luminary - Defeat Moai Minstrels with Hot Lick, a minstrel ability. They're located in grottos. (Quest is in Gleeba Dance Hall after you've beaten the game)

Depends on how much you like the default classes, I guess. A lot of the additional classes require class-changing to unlock them.

And you do retain the skills you learn, to be clear. The only time this is not the case is when the class you're switching to can't equip the weapon the old class trained in. For example, I switched my Warrior to a Mage, learned the Wizard Ward skill, then switched back so I could have my Warrior use that skill before taking out metal slimes with Metal Slash to open up Armamentalist. But if I had put any skill points into Wand skills, then the Warrior wouldn't have access to those.

Thanks for the responses.
Judging by the posts in this thread, I'll probably get the game and become a fan of this series. :)

Im become a huge fan of the series.
If you like Dragon Quest and Pokemon then try your hand at Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker. This time your a Monster trainer and get to train and sythesis, think breeding, our monsters for fun. Loved the game and hope part 2 hits the states.

Ive got part 4 on the way and searching for part 5 for trade.

They changed Superstar to Luminary? fuck me.

Yeah, I don't really understand the whole Luminary thing. Especially since you're just a dancer...

Man... Finding a grotto on treasure maps is a pain in the ass sometimes. It's like a quest in itself. I'm also sad that the thieves coup skill doesn't work on grotto bosses.

I'm disappointed that this game is so easy, but the upside is I have more freedom to play around with my party's equipment. I'm doing sort of a dream team of my DQ1-4 characters, which I think is the greatest thing ever.

I'm hoping to get some tag mode action at CA Extreme this weekend.

I'm still not all that far along in the game yet, but this poses a question for me. It seems as though to unlock most of the jobs you need to have skill X from class Y. Does the job open up for that one character only, or can any of your party members change to it once you unlock the class?

It opens up permanently for everybody in your game to use.

EDIT: Wish I could find the enemies I need to defeat to obtain the Luminary vocation already.

Played a bit more and unlocked the ranger class. The strategy guide doesn't have much on that class, and doesn't like it. I agree. The only redeeming quality of that class is that you can use the boomerang.

So the main guy is at level 10 and I'm just beat
Hexagon and am heading back to Angel Falls
. Will I need to grind a bit higher, or am I good where I'm at for a while?

Thanks! Any clue on where or how to make birdsong nectar?

3x Nectar
1x Fresh water
5x Sleeping hibiscus

I was able to connect to the store. It was really easy. For shits and giggles my husband tried to connect on his Japanese copy for the first time, after playing over 300 hours, and he was able to connect (to the Japanese store, obviously)! I thought it would only work in Japan, but he was able to do it. Now he is upset that he didn't try it sooner and now has a shitload of quests to work through. He is able to purchase some awesome items, including an afro, DQ2 Prince hair, Hassan hair from DQ6, Barbara hair from DQ6, Flora hair from DQ5, and Bianca hair from DQ5. The items in the US store currently suck balls.

Now he's visiting all the visiting characters. The DQ2 prince and princess are called Pudding and Cookie.

Tired of seeing Shogum as the boss in grottos. Also tired of having one-hit wonder enemies chase after me through halls and continue pursuing me despite having run into a wall, unlike what they do everywhere else.
The items in the US store currently suck balls.
For sure. If I see another crappy antidote or medicine and each of their three variations, I am going to scream. It only gives me one semi-decent item and it's not even really that good. Between the three days so far (since one day was "down") I got a total of:

- Agility Ring
- Seed of Defense
- Mini Medal

...Yep. The highlights of my three stores so far. Don't remember if I managed a fourth store since the game has been out for five days, but if I don't remember it then it couldn't of been good.

I bought some of the higher-powered healing items since I'm sort of early in (Llaffan) but that's it. The accessories and materials sucked ass. I wish I at least got the items you did.

Am I the only one who thinks some of the bosses are tough? Maybe that's just me with my 3 person party.

I finally beat that
Boss for the Coffinwell quest. I forget his name...and after going back to the Celstrian place, I have to go find the Fyggs.... hooray...
So, I wonder how people beat this game in the first day, and then have time to review it. If the game takes 40 hours to beat. :/

I don't know if it was posted here or not, but someone posted a team strategy the worked really well.

I skimmed through it cause I wasn't that far into the game, but now I can't find it.

Any ideas? o_O

Oh my god a DRUIN. This is incredible.

Is there a maximum number of skill points you can earn for a class? I see some high level skills that sound pretty good so I want to know how much I can spread points around.

Damnit, stuck with another Mini Medal and a Strength Ring for todays store.

Gaah, I also just learned Maoi Minstrels are from higher level water grottos. fuck me. I've only made it up to 30'ish in grottos. ;(
Is there a maximum number of skill points you can earn for a class? I see some high level skills that sound pretty good so I want to know how much I can spread points around.
You can roughly max two skills per class by level 99, which amounts to the possibility of maxing all but two out. However I heard something about being able to de-level post-game (Level up again after hitting 99 I think) which would make it possible to level all of them.

When you transfer between classes, any remaining unused SP carries over too I believe.

Have you tried the tag mode? From the sound of this post, it seems like the Japanese and American versions can communicate with each other.

Finally got the Alchemy pot.
I'd been back to the inn several times since doing the quest so I don't know why it hadn't triggered, strange.

Also got Sellma to show. I have a really nice sword in the store, but costs 18,500! Time to grind! :D

So I just got to
Alltrades Alley
and I'm still wondering when/where I can change my characters' class and where I can download quests. The manual sure as heck doesn't tell me >_< I'm enjoy it so far, but it looks like the grind is about to set in and I'm at Lv.13-14.

The last boss I faced was pretty tough for where I was at, as it killed 2 of my party members, causing one to get about 2/5 the normal EXP. I'm going to go back and horde some bookshelves though, so I can find new recipes for the Alchemy Pot. I also should find more quests.
Damn, I thought I could resist this game and finally quit the DQ series, but you guys make it sound so good
You should get it Pete, it's really good. The sword that was in my store was a Miracle Sword. Just got it after grinding a grotto for a couple of hours. It raised one of my guys attacks by 50, and I'm around level 20-21. Just beat
the Zere rocks boss.
I'm looking forward to the GS event so I can get some more treasure maps.

I saw the miracle sword today too so im grinding until I buy it.
Just switched my minstel to Mage learned Wizard Ward and switched him back. Now Im in the Q tomb searching for Metal Slime so I can unlock another class.

I had a lil trouble unlocking the Gladitor class as there must be a trick for getting ur guy to go super saiyan, Super hi tension. So i made 2 Minstrels, leveled them up to 5 when they learn Dragon Slash and had my main guy Egg On them on until i could kill 3 Slimes. I would Egg On back and forth until one of them went super saiyon. I love slimes but they run so damn much. And War Cry and Fuddle never seem to hit.

When it comes to the store, I say buy all the potions and ingredients you can since they are always handy in the Alchemy Pot. I got the Attack Ring I use with my Martial Artist and he does about 70 damage with the Iron Bar and he's lv 19.
The sword that was in my store was a Miracle Sword.
That sword should last you for a while. Been using it since I turned in x amount of mini medals, but it's great because all attacks restore health. Hell, I'm still using mine post game even though I could easily alchemize it into an uber miracle sword. It's also required for a downloadable quest (#121) and I don't know if it can be supplemented by the uber miracle sword, not sure of any other quests that it may be required for (probably not).

How do I get guests over wifi? I've had the game sitting there for a few hours trying to get them, but no luck. I'm still early in the game
leveling up my 3 new members to fight the Wight Knight
. Do I need to progress the story a bit or something?

What's the difference with the uber Miracle Sword? I'm loving the sword. You're right, it really helps having the extra healing.

As far as I know, it just has a higher attack rating of 92 if I remember correctly. Otherwise I assume it's the same.

I've gotten past the
