This one is a pre-packaged. When I am cooking for just myself I tend to just go pre-packaged because it is much easier. I did buy a local(ish) brand though, not Steak-Ums or anything like that.
Okay, that explains why it looks so much better than the ones I've made
Video Gaming Journalism is a joke. Blog journalism is a joke and tv journalism is for people who like to think they make a difference in the world by being on tv as much as possible. Political anchors are the worse. They should have terms like politicians.

Beef tenderloin is the best to use for cheesesteak. If you don't have the money flank steak can be used. Slice as thin as possible.
I've never been one for anything but tv, honestly. Shit is fun. I spent pretty much all my time in high school as part of the school news team and I loved every minute of it. I don't really agree with your views on tv journalism. Totally agree on gaming and blog, though.

Beef tenderloin? Never really thought about using it that way. I just had some last night and have plenty of leftovers to make into cheesesteaks, so I'll probably do that tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

Played more Vanquish. Sometimes I really like this game, but other times I want to punch it square in the face. The game just seems to have these attacks that randomly kill me. "Full Health? Game Over!" fucking sucks.

Joel is doing opinionated journalism, which is fine -- as it's the most common and enjoyable to read [every other site, for example].

I'm still working on objective reviews, it's fun for me though and I don't really plan on writing for a site again unless they show me they can put effort into their review standards and formatting.

Yeah, that was one of my major problems with the game. I liked it, but the flaws stood out pretty clearly.

Whoa, holy shit! I just did something in DA and Alistair's love me meter went from almost fully "I LOVE YOU" to complete "I HATE YOU" in one talk.
"The franchise of Mortal Kombat was on a declining slope of being a mediocre fighting game. NetherRealm attempts to remove all predisposition by reintroducing the newest iteration of the franchise as 'Mortal Kombat.'

NetherRealms provides us with a fighting system that allows for the player to create their own combos in continuation of the Mortal Kombat lore. The gore is present with a new x-ray feature that allows for the audience to cringe at the sight broken bones, crushed organs and what the insides would look like if they were impaled. A robust story mode, Tag Team Kombat and a Challenge Tower only enhances the experience and longevity of the game.

Mortal Kombat at its core has been a revival worth purchasing, however if online gaming is your main form of competition, then this is where NetherRealm has failed you as a developer. Currently (date it), Mortal Kombat's online system voids all forms of enjoyment due to their incompatible and laggy online matchmaking. However despite the pitfalls of their netcode, Mortal Kombat is a successful revival to a franchise. A must purchase for any fighting game or Mortal Kombat fan."
I mean this isn't bad, but you don't need to use Mortal Kombat and NetherRealm multiple times in every paragraph, after the first mention I know what you're talking about. It kind of sounds like you're name dropping or something, haha.

Slice as thin as possible. When you put the beef on the pan in strips, just pile it and dash your favorite seasonings. Flip almost immediately, dash your favorite seasonings and some Worcestershire sauce. Top wit cheese and onions. Served in a good size hoggie bread. Now for the best part. Wrap the sandwhich in foil and let it sit for 5 minutes before eating. During this time take the dripping from the pan and put them in a small cup, this can be used as a dipping sauce.

National news anchors annoy me. Local Anchors are cool people, unless they think they are movie stars. Anderson Cooper is the exception. Dude is a G at life.

/edit: the review was just editing sections of Joel's review. I didn't plan on putting together, then I did. Then I got lazy to re-edit. End of story. I just wanted to encourage Joel to not write within the confines of the standard, but excel where other just put thoughts without syntax on paper.

In complete honesty, if I felt like these reviews were something serious like tv journalism, I'd do everything I could to make them unbiased but there's a very distinct line in my mind between the two things. I can't even remember the last time I read/heard an objective game review.
That is why you compare games. Like how Bayonetta is the reigning Queen of action platforming games. Which is why Castlevania: LoS and Enslaved were left in the dust. Comparing games of the similar type is how you can come up with a rating.

Example:
-Bayonetta (10)
-Ninja Gaiden Black (9)
-Devil May Cry 3 (9)
-God of War 2 (9)
-...
- Castlevania: LoS (6)
-Enslaved (6)
-Devil May Cry 4 (6)
-Heavenly Sword (5)
-etc..
I don't think that's necessarily the best way to do it though. Not all action games have the same goals. Sure, you could compare combat, but I think you really need to judge a game within the context of the game. For instance, I would agree that Bayonetta is the queen of action games at the moment, but I wouldn't say it's directly comparable to something like Enslaved, which focuses on storytelling and other gameplay aspects than just combat.

For me, the way I would review a game is to basically start at a 5. If a game does nothing from that point to either impress me or annoy me, it would basically stay a 5. That would be a middle of the road, mediocre game. Neither good nor bad. Any time a game does something really cool or interesting, it might add to the score. Negative things would subtract from the score. At the end, I would weigh how much I enjoyed it overall based on those positives and negatives. Sometimes even a flawed game can deserve a very high score in my book if the positives greatly outweigh the negatives (eg. Deadly Premonition for me). I think the problem with a lot of reviews these days is that they start at a 10 and subtract points for negative things. So a lot of boring games without too many major flaws end up getting high scores when they probably don't deserve them.

Well it should be objective, you are reviewing. When you are reporting news you shouldn't be objective.

Just promise me Joel that you will write to a higher standard and we can drop this topic :D

Panzer has a voice in his reviews. He makes critical remarks, but self editing only goes so far (its okay I make mistakes a lot too).

I like your style ihadfg. A video game should be enjoyable to me. If the gameplay can keep me going and the story sucks, I will still be able to play. However if both have no impact on me, then it is just a waste of time. Tower Defense games don't need stories :D

Eh, I kind of like Joel's writing style, it strikes me as Stream of Consciousness, which I tend to enjoy.

Yeah, the notion of objective reviews is silly to me. I skim reviews knowing it's just one person's opinion on the game, movie or whatever.

Only thing I appreciate objectivity wise is if the reviewer says they're a huge fan of the series, or dislike the series/genre up front. As that adds some context.

I seldom read reviews anymore anyway. At most I'll skim through review scores on the major sites. Posts form gamer's in a forum like this are more useful to me. Especially if they're from regulars as then I generally know how much weight to put into that opinion as a predictor of how much I'll like the game (i.e. I pay attention if it's a poster who plays similar games to me, disregard it if it's people that I know aren't into FPS and WRPG games and so on).

But at the end of the day, I mostly know what I like and manly just play blockbusters. So about the only time I consider reviews/impression is for some new franchise or XBLA games etc. that I know nothing about.

Lets just say that Joel is better than this review.

http://pc.ign.com/articles/114/1145332p1.html

Dead Space 2 is an amazing game. I'm going to write about its scary moments, cool kills, and how much I dig the main character's internal struggle, but Dead Space 2 is about more than this. When I beat it for the first time, I sat on the couch with my heart racing and dissected the journey I had just taken. Then, I started my second playthrough, and when that was done, I jumped into a new game for the third time. Dead Space 2 is just that good.

And this guy got paid to write like shit. I want free money IGN!

We've just been around an environment where objectivity doesn't exist in mainstream reviews. There's nothing ridiculous about attempting to be more fair when recommending how people should be spending their own money.

Perfect objectivity is ridiculous, but compared to what's out there now, at least making the effort would produce much more useful material.

Reviewers should be honest about their opinions when writing a review rather than striving to be absolutely objective, but at the same time, they should consider their propensities and what appeal certain aspects of the game will have to other people.

Yes, yes.

Been awhile since I wuz in tha paid reviewing game :whistle2:/

Fukkkin law school.

You summed up succinctly exactly how I feel about reviews. They should reflect the reviewer's opinion of the game, but the reviewer should also explain why they have that opinion of the game. This way people can judge for themselves whether they think their views will fall in line with the reviewer. Striving for objectivity in something that has no right and wrong is not the way to write a review.

The dipping sauce sounds amazing, I'm not supposed to be eating anything like that though, according to my doc :( Why would you wrap it up in tin foil before you eat it?

I usually love all anchors. I've worked with a couple of the anchors for the ABC and FOX affiliates in Nashvile and I loved them. They all had a ridiculous amount of swag. I took so many life lessons away from those people. Especially the weather anchors, I fuckin' loved them.

I don't know about that, I think reviews can be written either way. It's not like I just go into a game with an "I HATE THIS" attitude. If that was the case I wouldn't have given Demon's Souls a chance. Also, news is supposed to be objective, not subjective. It comes out subjective most of the time because that's just what happens at the big stations. I will aspire to a higher standard as I always have, but I won't be a completely objective game reviewer, I don't think that's entirely possible to do.

YO! Dragon Age peeps, is there a way I can turn on an auto-equipper so they'll just throw my characters the best armor/weapons in my inventory? I'm spening a LOT of time in these menus and I'm only 5 hours in.
As far as I know there's no way to do that. That's why they simplified it slightly in the sequel. And then people complained that they changed it.
Why would I change my avatar to Keenan with a fro when I changed it to TMK with a fro?

That really sucks, I'm already sick of comparing armor.

By higher standard Joel, I mean never ever write a review like IGN's Dead Space 2 review. You are well above, but do not be lazy, excel when others only promote average.

I believe if you are on the consoles it is select, or in the actual menu options. Menu tweaking is what I love about RPGs. I want full control, so I can optimize my characters to the their fullest potential.

Putting the sandwich in foil warms the bread and melts the cheese into it. You don't want it toasty, but not day old stale. That is why you do it. If you are anything like me, I usually make cheesesteaks when I go camping. So the waiting period they are sitting close to a fire and get extra warm and melted.

/edit: wtf happened? why my avatar change?

I loved equipping and customizing everything about my characters in ME1, but that was because everything I had looked cool. Everything I have in Dragon Age looks jank and old.

Ohh, I understand. I usually just lightly toast my hoagie roll before I put the meat on so between the meat and the hot buun the cheese melts. I'll be sure to try it your way next time! I usually eat cheesesteaks whenever I want to cook something that's relatively quick, I don't go camping very often because there isn't really much of a place for it where I live now. We had camp grounds but last two summers in a row there've been dead bodies turning up there so they shut the place down.

yeh, I'm stuck studying for crim law and con law. The end's finally in sight, so that's definitely a plus. Totally gonna break into dat Yakaza 4 once this nonsense is over. Wanted to play that game back in mid march, but I just haven't had a decent opportunity to do so.

Been playing some Fallout New Vegas. 11 hours in and I'm at the strip does that sound about right or could I possibly be close to finishing the game? Currently level 12 right now. FO3 the max was level 20 before the dlc right right?

I'm on the other end of the school equation. Just finished grading final exams for my undergrad course. About 1/3rd through final papers for my grad course, will finish them up over the weekend.

Beer and some gaming (or TV/movie--trying to decide) here in a bit.

Speaking of grading, I TA for an online course, and this group of students is just...well...there's no words for them. :/

I don't get why people pay so much for college and then don't do the work. I can see not going to class...I can see doing the minimum to pass. But straight up just not doing the work? Pointless.

Frankly, most of the people in college now shouldn't be in college. But it's just what you do after high school, so people end up there.

That's arguably the biggest thing necessitating grad school now :whistle2:/

Dude, someone keeps trying to call me and they never fucking get the timing right. I always get to my phone literally right as it rings for the last time. They've been trying to reach me for like a month and it never fails that they miss me. fuckers should leave a message, I'm beginning to think they're one of my many exes.
