GGT 246 Was Delayed Slightly Due To E3

The voice of english ryu hayabusa is doing the voice of revolver ocelot in the new MGS. ;O
New or old Ryu? By which I mean, Troy Baker or Josh Keaton? I much prefer Josh Keaton. Especially since he played Ocelot in MGS3.

Edit: Goddamnit. Just read it and saw that it was Baker. My interest in MGSV is quickly dropping now. Kojima needs to stop replacing his actors!
Yeah Josh was great. Troy baker no lie made me switch to japanese voices because his voice was so bad.

His voice is just to soft to play strong male lead characters.
I don't know about soft, but he definitely seems to have one of the most generic voices ever. I know I kind of jokingly compared him to Nolan North, but looking at IMDB and Wikipedia it's crazy accurate. He has done soooo many games and cartoons in the past year and in the majority of the stuff he uses the exact same voice. Also, did not realize before that he was the official voice of Hawkeye now. Kinda fits, though.

Is anyone else burned out on E3? Worst media coverage ever, I think. The gaming media just keeps getting worse. Gamers make for some bad journalists. Poorly written stories with half-assed research they pulled off a wiki page. There's a few good gaming journalists, but most are no better than what some fat kid living in his mom's basement posts on his Facebook page. Pathetic.
Yep, CAG's been around long enough that you can go back and see people posting in 2003 or 2004, "Video game reporting/criticism is bound to get better, right?" NOPE. But this is true of a lot of journalism. The immediacy of twitter (blogs to a lesser extent) make people unwilling to do any legwork at all.

This whole NSA scandal is a great example of that. I don't know how many articles on Slate, Wired, or Ars Technica I've seen over the past two or three years about gov't agencies' monitoring activities, and yet none of the major sources of news (including a lot of well-regarded newspapers) are unwilling to do any reporting until there's a whistleblower involved. They require a "face," a human interest angle, before they'll go after anything. That basically kills investigative journalism.

But yeah, there's very few gaming sites to read. The whole SimCity debacle uncovered the worthwhile ones...check that thread on the PC board if you're interested.

So Nintendo is saying the Wii U will get a boost from Mario and Zelda this holiday? As a long time Nintendo fan I don't see this happening. Wind Waker is a re-make and although I'm sure Mario will be great doesn't really look up to Galaxy caliber. I know I won't be buying one. Ugh.

I have a 3DS and although it's got some quality titles it's pretty much failing to grab me either. It's just so much of the same. The new Yoshi game looks like a remake of the original. Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, etc etc. Kid Icarus was fun but the controls were annoying. I'm sure the new 3DS Zelda will be great too but even that isn't getting me all that jazzed. I hate to be a downer and I never thought it would be possible but I think I'm really at the point where I might officially be done with Nintendo.

In other news anxiously awaiting The Last of Us. It is the first game I pre-ordered in probably a decade. Hope to get it finish it and get some of my money back :). I just beat Gears Of War 2 last night. Yeah backlog.

Did we play the same games? Paper Mario on the 3DS felt completely different from the rest of the series. And Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon was a vast improvement over the original, not to mention it's only the second entry in the series.

I'm with you on Windwaker HD and the new Mario game not being as wow-worthy as a new Zelda or as Mario Galaxy was. (although I'm still interested in both)

Also looking forward to The Last of Us tomorrow. Should be sweet.

From what little I played, I hated Mario Galaxy. It could not hold my interest and seemed to be following the trend of whatever I hated about NSMB DS that I couldn't put my finger on.

From what I've seen/played of Super Mario 3D Land on 3DS, I'd rather have that than another Galaxy game any day of the week.

Yeah I can't put my finger on it and your statements are true but I think I'm just feeling kind of "meh" on the whole thing, like suddenly these games don't strike the chord like they once did. I think it might be burnout of the themes and characters maybe not the games themselves. I guess it's kind of like even though it's new the freshness is gone for me.

I can understand that. I don't really get tired strictly of the characters of those series, but I can't blame anyone that does. For me, I still get excited about Nintendo games as long as the gameplay ideas look fresh/expanded/revitalized. That's why games like Mario Kart 7 and NSMB2 bored me, while Mario Galaxy and Skyward Sword excited me. The new 3D Mario looks somewhere in the middle, kind of like Mario 3D Land.

To it's credit I adored Mario 3D Land. It was an amazing title through and through. I actually borrowed it from a friend though because I didn't want to get burned. I played through it and had a blast. I stayed away from NSMB2 because I didn't want to feel that contentment towards it.

I played through Twilight Princess which I thought was great and I know a lot of people didn't like it. I thought it really picked up in the 2nd half. I'm guessing not many people made it that far. When it was time for Skyward Sword I was excitied but then lost interest quickly.

I guess I'm just hot and cold but I can't help shake the overall feeling that if I didn't have a current Nintendo console I wouldn't feel like I was missing out. I guess it's also that I'm feeling more and more like sticking to one ecosystem to cut down on the old backlog, not sure I'll be getting more than one console next gen.

There was an interview with one of the top Nintendo guys awhile ago (might've been Iwata I forget) who said the innovation comes from new gameplay ideas not new IP, so they implement new gameplay into their existing IPs way more often than coming up with new series. It's true in a sense and I love pretty much every core game Nintendo puts out and they nearly all have new ideas but if you dress it up in the same old games yes most people will just take a quick look and go yeah its the same old thing.

Actually this interview with Eiji Aonuma kind of in some ways sums up how I'm feeling:

"If we don't change we might die. We need to evolve. Things need to change. Things need to grow."

Source

He actually talks about the fatique with Zelda and the catch 22 they are in.

People also tend to forget that a game like Luigi's Mansion 3DS isn't even made by Nintendo...it was made by Next Level Games. I enjoyed their Punch-Out too.

One podcast I was listening to yesterday was pointing out that Nintendo is in sort of an impossible position because while fans are screaming for new shit at the same time they yell "where's Metroid/Starfox/Zelda". Only so much they can do at once.

Yeah it is a catch 22. Poor starfox though I've played every game in the series and I feel like they left it to die after Starfox64. I think I'm one of the lone people that actually really liked Metroid Other M but since Prime that series hasn't gotten much love either. Zelda is really at a crossroads in my eyes...they need to break the mold they are stuck in. People will complain but it needs to try at this point.

I thought Skyward Sword was a great experiment that worked out pretty well but I would want something different next time. Twilight Princess is my favorite in the series so far.

What did you think of Paper Mario on 3DS? I haven't played mine much, but like you said, it's different.

I had to change my Last of Us to slower shipping because of AMA13 tomorrow. I'll be able to play on Sunday or Monday though.

Hey, long time GGT. I'm actually considering being more regular again in this thread/site again. I've been playing some Zone of the Enders HD Collection (playing the 2nd one now). Loved the Project X Zone demo a lot on 3DS.

I preordered a PS4 as soon as it went up on Amazon.XD

I am awaiting CAG blogs to come back so I can finally reveal my 7-8 cosplays I'm doing at cons now.

Nintendo needs more Wii U games period. If I was them, I'd be busy upscaling Gamecube era ports into HD to pad the release scedule. Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Starfox Adventure/Assault, F-Zero GX, Wario World, Fire Emblem PoR, hell even that crappy Kirby racing game would be better than nothing. I know a lot of folks who passed up the Cube and never experienced many of these games. Wind Waker is a good start, just keep it going.

And make a new Wavebird controller, dammit. There's no reason not too.

It was good, but I wasn't crazy about it. I like that they tried something different, and the game looks beautiful (especially in 3D), but I felt like the design of certain puzzles could use some work.

That's exactly what I don't want them to do. I want them to be able to devote more time and people to making *new* games.

I'd gladly take 1 great new game on the level of Mario Galaxy over 5 gamecube HD rereleases.

Awesome. The GGT needs your voice, Mana. And Leda needs your support. Help us talk her into doing porn.

And Project X Zone looks very interesting. I hope its better than some of the other cross-studio srpg's that throw in characters from several companies. Most of those games have horrible gameplay issues.

I agree, partially, with the idea of innovation in franchises that already are estaablished -- the idea of a Team Ninja Metroid game is so awesome it's a shame that it ended up so badly. But it's always risk reward. Look at Mario Sunshine -- people love to hate that one, or they used to. But then you have Metroid Prime, which was a stroke of genius. Those are radical shifts though -- I liked some of the ideas in NSMB DS, but it felt soulless and boring to me. It was missing that spark. I felt the same way about Galaxy -- the new ideas and controls didn't entice me and the same goes for Skyward Sword. It's all about mixing the right amount of nostalgia with the right amount of *good* innovation.

From what little I played, I hated Mario Galaxy.
Mario Galaxy is my favorite Mario game of all time, easily within my top 20 games of all time and probably my second favorite 3D platformer behind Banjo Kazooie. It was seriously wonderful, it seemed like Galaxy 2 improved on the ideas of the first, but I didn't finish that one, and I felt like the original had a lot more magic since it had so many cool ideas.

Yeah, I'm really stoked for this. Have the evening cleared out to soak some decent time into it. First game I've preordered in ages. Kind of wish I'd preordered locally than Amazon though since UPS has been delivering stuff at 6-7pm at my condo building lately, and when they use fedex it goes to the post office first and the mail comes 5:30-6:30 usually. Maybe they'll use Lasership though as that's how my last few games have came and that tends to come late morning/early afternoon.

I loved SMG, never got around to the second. I did like Super Mario 3D land better--still playijng it actually. Up to special world 7, just need to knock that and special world 8 out (getting the 3 coins in each level before moving) and I'll be done with it finally. Just distracted by console stuff and Animal Crossing currently.

I don't see any comparison between NSMB DS and Galaxy though. Very different look (and not just the 2D/3D thing), type of level design, control (much floatier in NSMB etc.). Galaxy was probably my favorite 3D Mario before the 3DS one. 3DS one I like best as it feels more like the old games, but in 3D--i.e. shorter, linear levels rather than bigger open worlds to explore for stars, fetch quests etc.

I think it might be burnout of the themes and characters maybe not the games themselves. I guess it's kind of like even though it's new the freshness is gone for me.
That's probably a big part of it. I still enjoy the games but I don't NEED to play them anymore, and have really no interest in a Wii U as the 3DS is enough Nintendo for me.

I'm 34 and started gaming seriously with the NES so I've been playing those franchises for the balk of my life so they understandably don't have the same impact they do or new IPs do in terms of feeling fresh and being something I get excited for.

Yeah, the two Mario Galaxy games are my favorites in the series, and I've played just about all of them. Galaxy 2 in particular is one of the very few games I look back on as a perfect experience. Both games just seemed brimming with creativity and a love for game design. This is pretty much the opposite of something like NSMB2, which felt to me like a game that had to exist to fill up the 3DS library. (contrarily, I'm actually quite fond of NSMB Wii and WiiU, which have some of that craftsmanship that I love about certain Nintendo games).

Looking forward to Last of Us, but as usual, I will be the "Last of Us" here in GGT to play it since Amazon Prime to Hawaii is slow as shit.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you-34 started with Atari/early PC gaming but really got into it in the NES era. I'm pretty excited by the characters when they are doing new crazy stuff like SMG. But then they also make these games every 5+ years as oppossed to say COD or AC where they just throw one out every year like a goddamn sports title with very little innovation. I'll take nostalgia with a couple new ideas at least 5 years apart instead thank you very much.

I watched a little bit of the Square-Enix stream and I don't think I've ever been more confused. The peek inside of Play Arts Kai's sculptor studio was pretty sick though.

Sounds like I will need to dust off my force feedback wheel for GT6.  Suspension and physics model seems like a big leap over previous GT.

Wish I had the space and money to buy a sled...

I missed that Play Arts Kai behind the scenes.  :(

Lol, speaking of which I felt like oh man Assassin's Creed...I'm missing out. I probably also felt that way since I love Ubi's Prince of Persia games. I started Assassin's 1 on the PC, I'm about halfway through and I'm kind of meh on the whole thing. Oddly enough I finished the PSP game which was only about 5 hours. I have 2 waiting for me on the 360 which I hear is probably the best of the series but not sure I'll keep up with it after that. 1 just seems really jank at times and I'm pretty sure people said the PC version fixed some things? Overall not impressed. I'd take a yearly POP in the vain of the first trilogy and the forgotten sands over this any day.

I'm probably renting it. I have a video store with a good game selection that isn't about to go out of buisness (unlike say blockbuster) just a few blocks from my house. Rare I know.

Yeah, AC 1 is quite a bit different from AC2 and subsequent games.

I didn't play much of AC1 as it just didn't grab me. I loved AC2 though. But couldn't get into Brotherhood as it was just more of the same and I hated the Borgia tower stuff--just felt like a lot more combat (which I wasn't a big fan of even in AC2) and constantly running from guards etc. compared to the 2nd. Haven't bothered playing one since. I'd probably give a AC3 or a newer one a shot down the road if they find there way to the PS+ free game collection. But doubt I'd spend money on one.

I think AC2 was just one of those "it was great to play one time" things, but not really a genre I can get serious into as I'm not big on action game combat or stealth.

That's the other thing after hearing 3 wasn't very good, I'll probably stop at 2. 4 looks good, but I feel like right now it's a next gen farce. I guess the only thing to push me back in after 2 would be rave reviews or something, then again I guess it doesn't hurt to let a few games go nowadays.

For me, Mario is all about the powerups and how they play into the level design and leverage gameplay. Drop the graphics, music, type of platforming, etc. When they hit all of it right, I get a sense of amazement, like there's a magic behind it. Neither game had that as far as I'm concerned and that's what I meant about them being similar, to me.

SMB3/SMW/SM64 have the magic for me. I was hoping that NSMB DS would be in the vein of the last 2 2D platforming games, but the level design was pretty much straight forward, but my main thought looking back on that game is that the only power ups I remember were the Fire Flower, the Big Mushroom, and the Small Mushroom. I didn't think either of the new mushrooms worked well and the Fire Flower has always been pretty standard... I missed the racoon tail, the cape, yoshi, the things like kuribo's shoe or the hammer bros. suit. The magic just wasn't there and it felt like more of the same and it was a chore. Even at the end of every level, I think it was just a Reznor with more dinosaurs. Oh, let's have two of them now. At least the SMW/SMB3 games had the Koopa Kids with various attack patterns and stuff. It just wasn't good.

I wanted to like SMG, hoping it'd be more like SM64 than SMS. I think I got about 3 or 4 stars before I quit SMG... I loathed the bee suit and some of the mechanics I was running into then. It may have gotten better, but it just felt like a chore to me. That and I hated the controls. I do not like waggle. I do not like motion anything. I prefer a standard controller with classic controls. So in the end, I wasn't having fun, there was no challenge or enjoyment, just annoyance.

So to me, both didn't have that magic -- they were just "innovating" for the sake of innovating, and -- IMO, of course -- they missed the mark so it didn't work for me.

SM3DL seems a lot closer to the stuff that made up SM64 to me but with some nice additions... so I'm hopeful I'll like it best of all the 3D mario games, at least since SM64.

Transistor coming up.  I wonder if that music from the teaser is part of the game?  I liked it...

I have NSMB 2, MK 3DS, and AC coming soon too.

--

As far as AC games go, I liked AC1 a lot, played AC2 enough, since it was a solid game, but I hated the direction they took it.  If I wanted GTA: Venice, I would buy GTA: Venice.  Too much of a shift.  I own AC:B and AC:R on PC... I might give them a shot someday, but they're not high on my priority list.

Oddly enough, since AC:L was just on sale for Vita for

Guilty as charged. I just bought the Vita one too. I liked the PSP one and at $14 I'll take that shot.

You should try more of SMG, motion isn't fun but I feel like that game turns into something magical. I think 2 may have been even better but I never got that far into it.

Transistor...action strategy turn based?  Weird flow to this game, but it's polished looking overall...not bad for just a 10 man team.

Bastion was SOOOO good. Get Transistor, Second Son and Knack out and that's when I'll buy a PS4. That's enough for me.

Transistor--I'm not completely sold on the turn based strategy parts considering it also plays like a straight action game.  But the presentation is really good and the story is interesting.  I think it has feels.

I didn't like what I saw of Transistor in the Sony conference, I thought it looked clunky and stuff but will have to check out more because from what Joel told me, I like the idea of the story if he was right.

And I won't be playing SMG or SMG2 any time soon.  I don't have a Wii anymore and I don't plan on picking one up.  So yeah, that's that.  If they ported it to 3DS like DKCR, then I'll get to it eventually.  I still need to pick up DKCR, I just need to find a decent deal.

If you play AC:L before the sale ends, lmk how it is.

TLoU better arrive early tomorrow.

I wish Atlus would release the SMT4 3DS over here. It looks so good. ;_;

Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is coming to the Vita.

fuck yeah.

Runner2 was announced awhile ago -- but it wasn't slated to hit until Summer instead of along PS3/Xbox/PC.

And I'll see what I can do about playing some of it soon to let you know, but from what I hear it's supposed to be a good equivalent of a portable console AC on the go.

I had asked in the Vita thread I frequent on GAF and got these responses:

*IMO yes, it's not a great game but for 13 almost any retail game is worth a shot.

*I really enjoyed what I got out of AC:L. The feeling of a true Assassin's Creed on a handheld is powerful and the world it's built in is a pretty one. There are a few bugs here and there, but I think they patched out all the game breaking ones so you're free and clear there. The framerate dips at times, and the combat is the same boring ass AC combat. It's a beautiful game though. Well worth the 13 bucks.

*If you can stomach the framerate and persona system, yes. It's got issues but it's a good "tech demo" of possibility. It really needed optimizations and maybe some compromises.
