Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info
Have you pre-ordered a videogame from Amazon before? I'm wondering if they arrive at your house on release day, or if they ship it to you on release day.

I'd very much like to NOT have to deal with the mall BS on this.
No, this will be my first. I'm guessing that they'll be shipping it on 4/29 so I should get it on 4/30 since I paid the $3-4 for next day (Amazon Prime).

???????????????????

They should ship it on release day or the day before. I did the same thing as you, except got the normal version

The game comes out 4/29, today is 4/3, what the hell are you talking about?

I hope the frame rate of GTA IV will be consistent, it doesn't have to be perfect just, consistent. The aiming mechanic still worries me a bit but it might turn out to be great.
I thought the game comes out on a Sunday, same day as Mario Kart.
No. I've never seen a game come out on Sunday besides Nintendo titles.

#-o

Been slammed with work...was running reports on those particular dates...that shit fucked me up.

I had no idea Mario Kart and GTA have the same release week. Nintendo sure has some balls pulling that. Stupid balls.

Both games are geared toward two different types of people. Nintendo will do fine.

I must be two types of people then because i plan on buying both on release day.
Actually saw this on TV last night during CSI.
I also saw this, but I don't think that it was on spike.
I also saw this, but I don't think that it was on spike.
No, it was during the new CSI on CBS. LOL. OMG.

saw it a couple of times today...at first i was doubtful if it was really GTA b/c i didn't see the main character anywhere...but they said liberty city, and i knew it had to be gta

From the looks of it, there actually will be a gameplay change between the PS3 and 360:

http://n4g.com/News-131530.aspx

(actual article has been removed, but the comparison is in the link)

Split screen only in the PS3 may be a big thing.

also, as I expected, the 360 comes with the option to install on the hard drive to run better.

NOTE: Geez...Posted just 6 hours ago, and I've already got hate mail! Let me clarify a few things. First, the build I previewed was dated 2/21/08. I finished the entire game (and have been playing it since). Second, the 360's issues appear to be bugs, hence the disclaimer below. Third, I'm not a PS3 fanboy. The PS3 doesn't have any good titles (except for Uncharted), so how can someone be a fanboy? I'm purposefully harder on the 360 version because I've been called a 360 fanboy in the past. There's no winning here! Fourth, I've added a counter. When/If this page can rack up 500,000 hits, I'll post more detail in a *SPOILERS* section to further legitimize it.
Main thing I'm worried about is frame rate, it looks like it dips quite a bit in the trailers.
I am 100 percent sure that will be a problem in both versions. All previous GTA's have had this problem, and Saint's Row did as well. I don't remember if it was a problem in Crackdown, though.

If its a problem in these polished trailers, it'll definitely be a problem in the actual game.
Main thing I'm worried about is frame rate, it looks like it dips quite a bit in the trailers.
Yup it concerns me as well

So far all I heard about the frame rate was that it's for the most part solid, but jumped a bit when 16 players were all shooting bazooka's at a helicopter in multiplayer. I guess they were attempting to chug it to see how much it could handle.

I would actually expect that with that much action though.

I read this also. From numerous Video Game magazines whom got invited to Rockstar studios to play a build of the game they said the frame rate really never dropped and it was always pretty solid.

I keep getting a really bad feeling about this GTA for some reason...Im still getting it for PS3 since my 360 is about to die and Im getting fed up with it. But I still have a bad feeling about it...I hope im wrong though

Bad feeling that you might not like it or that the game will be bad?

I felt like that 2 months ago, but after seeing everything I have seen, I am pretty sure its going to be fucking amazing.
Bad feeling that you might not like it or that the game will be bad?
Both. I mean...liberty city has been done 3 times and totally revamped or not, It might feel "old". Plus the new controls will make it feel totally different and not GTA but more GoW...Idk, I just really hope im going to love it. I remember being totally psyched for San Andreas like 9 months before It came out, and I dont feel this at all with this GTA.
I felt like that 2 months ago, but after seeing everything I have seen, I am pretty sure its going to be fucking amazing.
I really really hope Im wrong. Maybe the whole 360 vs PS3 issue for me is whats killing it, knowing that If I do get it for PS3 ill be missing out od the DC for 360...

I'm having a similar feeling. I was psyched out of my mind for San Andreas but I'm not dying for GTA IV to hit. Part of it I think is me; I don't really get as excited about video games as I used to. I also think this one has gotten less attention. I also am kind of weary with the mood of IV, it seems darker and more serious that previous GTAs. I liked the lighthearted nature of the past games.
I've alway been under the impression that n4g is a big pro-Sony site.
I've had that impression also. When i first stared going there, it seemed pretty balanced. But now it seems to be heavily slanted in sony's direction. Pretty much any positive article about the 360 is an instant flame war. Sarcasticgamer.com said on a podcast that when they submit pro sony articles it's linked almost immediately, but if it's pro Microsoft it will take about an hour or more to be linked on the site.

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but the Bonus Round on Gametrailers has posted part 3 of their GTA discussion. http://www.gametrailers.com/bonusround.php?ep=20&pt=3

N4G has become a terrible site. They post links to reviews that are made 2 months after a game is out and they post dumb stories too.

i really hope there are no collection achievements, make it so much better. Also, no stupid achievements for playing countless hours of multi

yea i get the not-so-light-hearted feel from this game too...but judging by the commercial, it might be more light-hearted than it seems

I have an opposite feel about this game, I love that it's being taken in a more serious and realistic tone. The last games had gotten to be too out-there, and a more grounded story is something I had wanted for a while.

I'm also thrilled about the new mechanics in evading police and the new shooting system. Two of the things I really hated about past GTA games. And different ways of going on missions and progressing the story than just visitng this specific spot is also a nice change. The fact that you have things to do while out of missions is also nice, instead of just hopping from mission to mission.

From the previews it looks like the game doesn't suffer from a bad frame rate, since it hasn't really been brought up. Although I imagine when shit hits the fan (5 stars) it could slow down.

I'm pumped for this game, more than any other for this current generation at least.

Toss me in the "not hyped" boat as well. I haven't been following coverage on it much at all, mostly because I want to be suprised, but also because.. well, I just don't care, I guess. Don't get me wrong - I'm getting it day one, i've taken off the 29th, i've cleared my scheduled, my phone will be going off, and I'm staying up all night Monday night to play it. I'll get hyped when it's actually in the stores, I guess. I know I will play the hell out of it regardless.

It's kinda weird how there hasn't been a ton of coverage on it, though. It's either going to suck, or it's going to be completely amazing. I'm hoping for the latter. It's good to see a more serious tone, though.

I think I'm actually more hyped for both Saint's Row 2 and Fallout 3, though.

i wish i can hype up like everyone else like the old days (take days off, play all night, etc) biut honestly games dont draw me in like that anymore..

that being said im still hoping to pick this up.. it would be my first new release game this year..

im hoping theirs some 360 system deals that week

Serious tone, light-hearted tone, I really don't care either way. As long as I have just as much fun fucking around as I did in the previous games, I'm set.

The storyline and missions are great, but I have the most with these games just sitting with a group of friends and finding new, hilarious ways to rampage through the city.

Im defiantly pumped up about this game. This will be my first "full experience" of a GTA game. I played GTA3 very little on the pc but I was so into fps that I didn't even know it had a sprint/run button(found out months later while watching someone play).
wasnt there a drunk driving mission before? Or an acid trip? I thought there was.
Yeah, there was a mission in Vice City called "Boomshine Saigon" where the guy who lives in the junkyard accidentally blows up his own moonshine till and blows his own arm off. Then you have to get him to a hospital before he bleeds to death, but you're drunk or high or whatever from all the moonshine fumes in the air. It had the same sort of queasy graphical blur effect as what it looks like will be in the GTA IV drunk driving mission, plus your reaction time got a lot more sluggish when you drove, making it easy to overshoot a turn or crash into cars you meant to swerve around.

Interesting. I never finished Vice City, so I may have to go back and do that one. My PS2 has been getting no love lately.

I loved the orginal gta... loved gta 3 and vice city... san andreas eventually i got bored with.. but gta 4 has got me hyped up more then any game that I can remember in a while.

One thing I read from rockstar (i think from ign) was how they looked at gta 3 and how old gamers were when gta 3 came out .. and how much time has passed.. so they decided it was time to take the game in to a different element (ex..a darker more serious..whatever have you.. to better suite the gamers that "grew up" with gta)
Interesting. I never finished Vice City, so I may have to go back and do that one. My PS2 has been getting no love lately.
It takes a little work to get to the "Boomshine Saigon" mission; here's what you need to do to unlock it: First, you have to buy The Malibu Club (in Vice Point) for $120,000. That opens up a series of 4 missions. The first three involve rounding up gang members to do a bank heist. (The 3rd of the 4 missions, called "The Driver" can be extremely aggravating. I found it to be one of the hardest missions in the game) Anyway, the 4th mission is the bank robbery itself, called "The Job". Once you've finished that, it opens the missions from Phil Cassidy, the guy at the junkyard. He gives you just 2 missions; the second one is "Boomshine Saigon".
