Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info
If this were the first game in the series, there probably wouldn't be as many similar games, we would have no idea what we were about to be hit with, and the expectations would be so low that the scores would be astounding.
The scores are already amazing. But if this was the first game in the series, hence a rather new genre, i'm sure there would be reviewers who just didn't "get it".

Could be. I'm pretty sure GTA III blindsided people back in its day.

I might not've even noticed it initially had it not been for being a fan of the original. I didn't really do much console gaming back in those days.

It sure did. I really loved GTA 1 and 2. My friends and I would play that all the time when we were youngin's. I didn't even hear a GTA 3 was coming out. I saw it one day at my local blockbuster ( This was way back when it was realeased ) and they had no copies of it. For a month straight I tried to rent the game with no avail. I ended up buying my own copy and O man was it one of the coolest games I have ever played. Good Memories. :D

Am I the only one around here who wasn't interested in GTA III, Vice City, SA, etc....?

I played a bit of them and was put off by the jerky animation and so-so graphics.

I am excited about this new one, however. Niko looks like a really interesting character and I'm excited about the multiplayer mode possibilities.

Well you have to remember the time period when those games came out. Now we have motion capture to help with fluid animation and better technology and understanding to get more realistic animations. Also the graphics overhaul from the old gen consoles to the next is a big leap. You have to remember that characters and cars in these games need to be low polygon models since you do have a whole city and landscape to render avg 60 times a second! I played GTA 1 all the time on my bros laptop and I got GTA3 for my PC. It was pretty awesome for its time. The biggest thing was the open world which has set GTA games apart since the beginning.

Agreed. GTA 3 looked awesome. When Vice City came out the game technology wise and amazing ( at the time ). Sure the games weren't perfect and suffered from minor setbacks but they both were amazing titles at there time. Not soo much anymore.
We need another carmegeddon.
Yeah, I guess GTA doesn't entirely fill that space ..

It would have to be a budget title. Over-the-top and completely goofy.

I don't think I'd enjoy a translation by, say, EA.
Does anyone else want Grand Theft Auto 2 released on Xbox Live Arcade? No? Just me?
fuck...I don't know why I never thought of that...hell yes, that would be sweet!

GTA2 is a free download from Rockstar.com for the PC

downloaded it the other day and got bored with in 2 minutes. I dont think it would translate well as an arcade DL

Hmm... I'm actually really tempted to get the limited edition. Especially since the game is in a real DVD case (not cardboard sleeve/metal tin etc.).
Nice. Thanks for posting that. I need.

BTW...has the tracklisting for that soundtrack CD been posted anywhere yet? I just Googled it and came up with nuttin'.
I was hoping to find the soundtrack listing as well but didn't see anything.

It's only a matter of time before stores start putting this game up early.

This K-Mart near me put Mass Effect up 2 weeks early. I'm going to be paying attention like no other, I want this game bad.

Well I just went and paid in full for the SE. Came out to $98.09 after tax. That plus the strategy guide I ordered from Amazon equals like $120. Pricy...
how long are you guys gonna play single player before jumping to the multi?
I'll probably give multiplayer a try on day one.
how long are you guys gonna play single player before jumping to the multi?
About 10 minutes and 33 seconds.:D
how long are you guys gonna play single player before jumping to the multi?
I think I'll go at least a few hours into the SP game before I try out the multi. How much multiplayer I play after that will probably depend on how often I see people on my friends list online, which right now is not that often. I work an overnight shift and pretty much all of my gaming during the week takes place sometime between 6:00-11:00 a.m. (EST) when most people are either at work, school, or still sleeping.
Awesome vid especially since I understood everything the guys were saying in Dutch. Funny as heck.
care to translate?

just went and threw down a preorder at GameCrazy. they're having a midnight launch, and even though I have next week off, I'm not sure if I want to go down there and stand around waiting until 12.

anyways, pretty sure I'll wait at least a few hours into single player before hopping into multi, maybe even longer. I kind of just want to explore the world for the first couple of hours, see the sights, pick up some whores, all that good stuff.

As with most multiplayer games, I'm going to try to jump in at the ground floor of multiplayer after about an hour of single player. Then, I can at least have a good idea of both and see which attracts my attention better.
Note: the customizations that are unlocked are only done so by playing the single player.
Do the customizations give you substantial advantages? Like more weapons? Because I hate when games do that.
from what I know... no. It's more like it gives you more visual options and are kinda like badges of honor to show off what you've done in single player.
cool
care to translate?
In short:

"Look I have the new GTA 4, I heard it has super realistic graphics, lets check it out." "Wow look at these graphics, super realistic" "Look at him walk" "Wait, I recognize this place, its behind our house!" "He's right there! Look at him" "Hey make him steal that car!" "He's stealing the car, man this game is awesome"

lol yea I got the super realistic graphics part. I knew it was shenanigans when after the 360 started up the camera dude looked away lol. Funny video though.
LOL, at first I was like "HOLY SHIT that framerate is freaking AWESOME" ... then I watched the rest of the video. That was good, thank God we only have 7 days left.
I did the same thing. I thought the graphics were off the chain. :D

Oh, I just signed up for amazon prime to get free shipping on these. Hey, if anyone wants to add me as a family member I would pay. Not the point of this post but amazon seems a good deal but not for 80$.

Also, I dont know if I want to play the multi that much. Hmm, just cant decide.
Note: the customizations that are unlocked are only done so by playing the single player.
I thought the customizations were purchased by earning cash in the multiplayer.

I seriously hope this game is gonna be as good as they say. Either way i've preordered it so it better be damn good :)
^^^ At least put up a Spoiler Warning. (For those folks that don't want to get spoiled)
I don't think he has to worry about it, the video is dead.
