HD DVD thread - Toshiba: HD DVD DISCONTINUED, REPAIR/SUPPORT CONTINUES, NO BLU PLANS
Theres no way a built in hd dvd player would benefit the 360.

Why?

Cost. It would raise the price of the 360 drastically.. :(
...well, if you believe the rumors (LOLZ), it would be $450. Approximately the price of an Elite. Once again, MS would find a way to circumvent an out-and-out price drop across the board by just throwing more stuff into another SKU, and shifting the older models down in price instead.

It's a gesture I don't entirely disagree with. Heck, if they really do go through with it I'm tempted to get one myself. I just think if they were going to do this it really would have helped if they got it done over the summer and just charged a little more instead of doing it now. With 2007 (and what was likely the biggest wave of holiday hype the console will have) gone, I'd expect XMas '08 will show the first cracks in the foundation that will eventually give way to a new console in...2010?

Merry Christmas to me! I just got home from work and waiting for me were 3 boxes from WHV...Now I don't have any pending orders from them. The order I had was for Harry Potter 1-5 Giftset and Ocean's Giftset. After waiting so long, I decided to use the card that had been authorized for the purchase and due to X-Mas it was maxed out and could not meed the authorization back in October so they canceled my order. I got an email confirming my cancellation and I myexpresscheckout.com showed that they were canceled. Now I open up all 3 boxes and I get 3 Harry Poter 1-5 Giftsets...WTF!? I kinda feel bad, I'm ok with paying for one of them and returning the other 2 to WB after all, I don't want to take money away from HD DVD ;)

i might be interested in buying/trading for one of those box sets
From what Ive heard, expect exactly that. $449 Elite with HD DVD drive (though it will be Toshiba's newer one capable of playing 360 games). = Bundled Remote.
The only way that would can happen is if that new Toshiba drive can do 12x DVD speeds. Even still, I don't think it would be a great idea. I would rather them wait and shock everyone with a 360 SKU that has a purple player in it.

Also, just came back from a 6 haul from BB:

Eastern Promises
Pan's Labyrinth (Linkin, according to the case it does not have english dub)
Stardust (Peeled the stupid 34.99 yellow sticker off the 29.99 price tag and made them match it)
Face Off
Blade Runner
The Kingdom

If this has been mentioned before, I apologize, but are there any CAGs that would be interested in a CAG OOTP Live Community Screening now that Christmas gifts have been received? Now that some more of us may have this title from gifts (myself included), it might be fun to give this feature a test and see how it goes.

I do want to test that - on paper, it's my favorite HD DVD feature to date. However, I haven't seen the first four HP movies (they are on the way from Amazon though) and I'd rather not watch part 5 first. Not that you guys have to wait for me or anything, but I'd be up for it next week.

Ok my little red friends, with the important part of Christmas over, it is now picture time again.

Your turn.

amirm (from MS) has already said that MS will not develop a bluray addon (or purple solution) until Sony offers an HD-DVD add-on for the ps3

...does the Knocked Up web content just not work with the 360 AO or something? Every time I go to it, it tells me to connect to the internet. Never had this problem with Transformers.

I know that the Best Buy B2G1 sale isn't anything special, but at least it amounts to approximately Amazon prices with no wait for shipping. With that said, I just picked up:

The Aviator
Purple Rain
Pan's Labrynth

Bringing my total for the week, including stuff that is still on the way this week, to 14.

you need to return it and exchange with the deal starting on the 30th, buy 3 get 2 free.

Feh. I would, but I only paid for one title anyway thanks to a gift card.

I'll have to remind my HD DVD-rookie friend of that upcoming sale, though. Hopefully I'll avoid it, I've been spending too much on this stuff again lately.

Yeah, I finally got Hot Fuzz and Children of Men with that - for under 23 bucks, no less. God bless that 10% discount, which will be fucking SORELY missed after this week.

Also cancelled an earlier order for Potter 3 + 4 and got both of them here for 15 and change. Thanks to a giftcard, all 4 movies were free...and I've still got like 12 bucks left on the card.
anyone see the kingdom? How is it as a movie? Is it worth buying the HD DVD version of?
I thought it was really good. And yes, probably worth buying.

Good for you, Hot Fuzz is great (even though it isn't better than Shaun Of The Dead or Spaced) and alot of people seem to like Children Of Men (I didn't, the ending was blah)

I ended up with Serenity and Traffic. Both blind buys and I know Traffic is supposedly horrible looking but for $10 a pop, I figured why not. The normal Traffic DVD would have run me $10 alone.

This and a few trades I made put me at the 77 movie mark. Thankfully, the only thing on the horizon I really want is Zodiac/Bonnie & Clyde/Before the Devil Knows You're Dead so my poor wallet can take a breather.

For those wondering about Potter 5 it's not bad but cuts too much from the book. Sirius's relationship with Kreacher is softened and Kreacher has almost no role in the film.
There's no picture of Sirius's mother shrieking in Grimmauld Place. Grimmauld Place looks too modern from the outside IMO.
For the good: The woman playing Tonks is great and Luna isn't bad. In regards to Imelda she nails the character but her voice doesn't match Umbridge's from the book. I also think she flips out a little more then Umbridge in the book. Those stupid kitties are still around though.
I wish they would make Potter as long as LOTR to be faithful to the books and spend close to it on the SE. I think the audience could sit through it being at least 3 hours long, maybe a little over that.
The focus points are NOT in HD btw or at least what I saw looked like SD unless they counted the movie footage shown as part of it.

well they were going to not have Kreacher in the movie, but JK talked them into it, so thats why his character was bare bones

I thought JK had a lot more control over the movies like who got cast and so on.

ehh she is mostly hands off from what I have read, besides everyone being british or at least not American, but she made sure Kreacher was in it for continuity when book 7 becomes a movie.

No wonder they miscast Umbridge. Staunton's voice is clearly not perfect for it. If you read the book you know what I mean. Her body frame isn't necessarily the best either.
Kreacher is a pretty big part of #7 I'll agree.
Jeez I'm mad. So this is why Warner have to be such cheap assholes and won't give it 3 hour LOTR treatment. What bullshit. I WANT an extended edition of Order, Azkaban and Goblet. I haven't seen Secrets and am more indifferent about Sorcerer's Stone.
Now I wanna chew Rowling out.

Man I've never ever been able to give more than two shits for the Potter books or movies. I saw some of the movies and found myself only enjoying the special effects and score. The story was way too average for me, compared to other kid fiction. Never understood it's appeal. Wish I could get into it and be a rabid fan like all the cool kids, but never could.

I always felt the professor characters were by far the most interesting and I'd definitely love to see a movie based on them.

heartbreak kid had great pq/aq

But the movie overall was a letdown...

Was anyone else's audio a bit low for eastern promises? I had to crank it to -22db to get anything legible :(

Just a head's up , Sleepy Hallow has been deleted from BB's system , it is in a Starter Pack there though .
I wanted to get it with this weeks deal .
I did manage to find the last $14.96 Clerks II at a local Wal*Mart .

Try reading the books and compare them to the movies. Seriously.
pan's just arrived.. now lets see what all the fuss is about
You'll probably feel it's over-rated. It's just a very good movie that nobody has heard of. But then again, almost all of Guiermo Del Toro's movies are very good, especially visually.
now lets see what all the fuss is about
No no no no no. Don't go into it thinking all the hype is going to deliver more than you could possibly imagine. I read all this positive stuff about it and thought when I went to the theater it was going to just completely floor me, and I was left underwhelmed to say the least.

I picked it up yesterday because after having time to think about it, it definitely was a well done film. I just went in with ridiculously high expectations. Just watching it for what it is today, I got more out of it.

Agreed. Compared to most of the drivel that is mass marketed to us in theaters today, it's a very good film. But it will not be an earth shattering life altering experience. You'll just appreciate a very good original story that's finely crafted with care and precision rarely seen in today's American cinema.

Eastern Promises is another movie that fits this bill. At least rent, if not buy, that one.

getting my 32" vizio sat. and getting my hd-dvd player for 360 tommorow.
I plan on taking advantage of the BB sale tommorow and getting Hot Fuzz, Beerfest and Clerks 2

No one's ever heard of? It won a crap load of awards and made millions more than in theaters off of dvd rentals.. hardly say thats "no one's ever heard of"

@_@
flashbacks of the "welcome to hd dvd" promos on older titles..

that rocked
yup thats the one!
Anybody willing to trade for Hot Fuzz or Surburbia on HD-DVD? I got both on HD-DVD and looking for Shaun of the Dead and the Big Lebowski.

If so - email me at [email protected].
Suburbia? Like the Roger Corman flick? On HD DVD?

Not sure if it was the disc or the 360 hd dvd add on...I finally got around to watching smoking aces. It is the combo disc, and I had let my friend borrow it awhile ago to watch it on the dvd side. Towards the end of the movie on the hd dvd side, it would freeze up, skip forward and a whole bunch of time delay problems were happening. I tried taking the disc out, made sure there were no scratches and put it back in. Same thing happened again. It was even a problem trying to fast forward it. Is this a hardware issue with my hd dvd player, or a faulty disc? Granted I will be watching another movie tonight, but I just wanted to know if anyone else has had these problems from the hardware side of things so I could be prepared that the movie tonight won't work.

Sounds like a bad disc. I remember that title having issues.

I'd contact Universal.
